Parallel universes are abundant in the world of Tapestry. The Fantasies & Futures expansion gives players the opportunity to build civilizations using fantasy and sci-fi inspired civs, technology, tapestries, and cities.

Components

In this third and final expansion to Tapestry, 10 new civilizations, 6 advanced capital city mats, 38 new tapestry cards, and 12 new tech cards are accompanied by comprehensive rulebooks that organizes all rules for Tapestry and the 3 expansions in one place (multiplayer and solo). The package also includes a few replacement cards from previous expansions: 3 landmark cards, Oil Paint, and Migration.

Some of the new tapestry cards include a new “charm” mechanism that provides one-time bonuses; some new tapestry and tech cards include exciting payoffs reserved for the final income turn.

Fantasies & Futures is fully compatible with any combination of the core game, the other Tapestry expansions, and the natural rubber playmat. It is packaged in an eco-friendly, sturdy, recyclable envelope.

FAQ

Will everything fit in the Tapestry box?

If you remove the original insert, you can fit all components (core game and all expansions) in the original box. You can also order the custom insert we created in collaboration with Folded Space; it is designed to hold all Tapestry content in the original box.

Can I gain a left-side charm on a tapestry card if Maker of Fire is directly to the left of it?

Nope! A left-side charm activates if there is a tapestry card to the left of it, and Maker of Fire is not a card.

How do I gain a space tile for the Werefolk civilization?

At the start of your second income turn, you will almost definitely not have a space tile on your civ mat (as the most common way to get one is near the end of the Exploration advancement track). So, per the second paragraph, you will then gain a space tile and flip it to see if you explore it or not (if you don’t explore it and you enter your third income turn without a space tile, you’ll repeat this process).

What does the Automa gain per face-up charm in step 2 of the setup/income turn procedure?

The Automa gains 1 VP per face-up charm.

Are the core game civilization adjustments noted in the expansion?

Yes, we’ve included those tweaks (found here) on the back page of the expansion rulebook. Any adjustments we make will always happen at the beginning of the game, so it’s not something you need to remember after setup. We are also working on a final reprint of some previous civilizations in the form of a civ update pack. Those more detailed adjustments can be seen here.

Which civilizations should be removed from the game when playing solo?

Advisors (P&P)*, Futurists*, Genies (F&F), Heralds*, Illuminati (F&F), Inventors*, Spies (P&P), Traders, and Weefolk (F&F).

*These civilizations may be used, but they will either unfairly benefit or hurt you.

Why should I preorder from Stonemaier Games instead of waiting a few months for the retail release?

We offer delivery much earlier than the retail release date (shipped from a fulfillment center in the US, Canada, the UK, or Australia) and a guarantee that you’ll actually get a first-run copy in a timely manner, as we only sell products we actually have in stock. We also support anyone who wants to order the game from their retailer of choice on the retail release day.

Can I buy all Tapestry stuff all at once?

Absolutely! All Tapestry products are available on our webstore, so you can buy anything and everything you’re interested in. You’ll receive an additional 20% discount if you’re a Stonemaier Champion.

Design Diary

February 26: Our Favorite Mechanisms

Today I have a special video chat between me and the designers (Chris and Mike) in which they share stories behind their favorite new civs, tapestry cards, tech cards, and capital cities:

February 24: Comprehensive Rulebook, Core Features, What’s Next

With the Tapestry core game and 3 expansions, the rules are spread out over many different documents. That can be cumbersome for players, so I asked Chris if he might be willing to create a comprehensive version of the Tapestry rulebook that would cohesively feature all rules, references, FAQs, and cards in one place. Chris did a SUPERB job at this, and our proofreaders made it even better.

The comprehensive rulebook is included in every copy of Fantasies & Futures, as is the comprehensive Automa rulebook that Morten and his team created. You can see them here: https://bit.ly/3kp1g30

As a recap to the various elements featured in Tapestry, here’s the core features infographic I created:

Thank you for following along these design diary posts! I’m so grateful to Chris and Mike for their design, Morten for his Automa mode, Andrew Bosley for his art, Christine Santana for her graphic design, and Shannon Lentz for his project management at Panda, along with the playtesters, proofreaders, and team members who helped bring Tapestry: Fantasies & Futures to life.

Here are a few key dates, and remember to sign up for the launch notification: http://eepurl.com/ihxtdX

  • February 25: Content creators with advance copies can feature what the expansion is on their platforms.
  • February 27: Content creators with advance copies can start sharing their opinions about the expansion.
  • March 1: Fantasies & Futures launches on our webstore! It’s in the $20-$30 range, and it will be available at a discount for at least the first few days. Available at the same time at a discount will be the new custom insert, the Tapestry core game, and the other two expansions.
  • March 6-20: Initial orders ship to customers from fulfillment centers in the US, Canada, UK, and Australia.
  • Late April: Worldwide English retail release date (localization partners Feuerland, Matagot, Maldito, and 999 Games will announce their release dates independently; if you want this expansion in another language, please contact the publisher of your language’s edition of the game to express your interest).

I look forward to hearing about the alternate realities you create in March and beyond!

February 23: Capital Cities and Automa Solo Mode

In Tapestry: Arts & Architecture, we introduced the new concept of Advanced Capital Cities. These are similar to the original capital city mats, except that they each offer a little twist that’s slightly more “advanced”—for this reason, when you play Tapestry, you’ll draw both a standard and an advanced capital city mat to see which is a better fit for you.

Here’s what Chris and Mike say about these 6 new advance capital cities:

“We were overjoyed to include more capital cities. We liked the idea of cities that might gain their resources in different ways, or were even a step beyond the Arts & Architecture cities.

Chris adopted a user-centered design philosophy while working as a software engineer, so he took delight in creating extremely early mockups of the cities that players could use from our very first directed playtests. These mockups evolved into prototypes that proved useful for communicating with the graphic designer about each city’s most crucial visual elements. For example, the little marsh symbols beside the Will-o-Wisps on Quagmire evolved out of playtester comments regarding the difficulty of telling which little squares interacted with this mat’s scoring conditions; knowing this enabled us to integrate appropriate iconography into the prototype and then to work with the graphic designer on a representation for the final version.”

There are a lot of clever touches in the cities, and as you can tell by the art I selected for the expansion packaging, my favorite is the City in a Bottle. Per the theme, it’s much smaller than other capital cities, and districts are smaller as a result (only 2×3). It’s too small to place any landmarks in the city—rather, you set aside landmarks you gain, immediately gaining 6 VP instead.

The other new capital cities are Netherworld, Polar, Quagmire, Savanna, and Veil.

Solo Mode: Rise of the Kaiju

This section is brought to you by solo specialist Morten Monrad Pedersen.

In the Plans & Ploys expansion for Tapestry we included a 5-scenario solo campaign. It was very well received, and we’ve frequently been asked to make a new one.

The campaign took as much time to make as the full Tapestry solo mode and that wasn’t an option this time around. We could fit in two new scenarios, though, which form a micro-campaign: “Rise of the Kaiju”.

Like last time, this campaign makes significant rule changes to provide a fresh game experience and challenges you to develop new strategies.

In the first scenario, a huge Kaiju monster attacks your capital, which shakes up your city building strategy. In the second scenario the Kaiju’s kin joins the fray and swarms the entire world, which forces you into a desperate race against time.

I told Jamey that we needed 27 unique and large Kaiju metal minis in an expansion that only contains cardboard and is packed in an envelope.  Unfortunately, he was completely unreasonable and said no. I don’t know why I put up with him. So, instead of including $200 worth of minis to support one solo scenario, we used player tokens.

We always include new Automa civs in the expansions and this time was no different. The currently existing ones are intentionally very simple and we assumed that experienced players wanted more complex civs. So, we designed a few of those. Complex civs that is, not players – we don’t design players,… well, I guess we kinda do with our Automas.

Just as important as these things is the new rulebook, which combines all the solo rules from the core game and expansions. This means that instead of flipping through 4 Automa rulebooks to find a rule there’s now one rulebook to rule them all.

Creating this rulebook gave us the chance to address criticism that the core game Automa rulebook had gotten. The main criticism was that it erred on the side of conciseness. That’s a very valid point and a bad decision on my part. Because of this, we added examples, explanations, and clarifications based on trawling the threads with Automa rule questions on Board Game Geek.

I hope that this new rulebook will make your life easier and your experience better if you play Tapestry solo: https://bit.ly/3kp1g30

Here are all Tapestry: Fantasies & Futures components, including the comprehensive multiplayer rulebook, which I’ll discuss tomorrow:

In which city do you want to live? I’ll be back tomorrow to talk about the comprehensive rulebook. You can also follow even more detailed reveals from Chris on his designer blog: https://ferventworkshop.com/tapestry-fantasies-and-futures/

February 22: Tech Cards and the New Folded Space Insert

In Tapestry, you can invent new technologies, which adds a tech card of your choice to the right side of your capital city mat. At various times you have the ability to upgrade a tech card of your choice, triggering either the benefit in the circle or in the square, depending on how much you’ve upgraded the card.

There’s actually a prerequisite to upgrade a tech card to the top row to get the square benefit, and many of the 12 new tech cards in Fantasies & Futures feature a new prerequisite: They can only upgrade to the top row if you have ever played a charmed tapestry card or if you are on or after your income turn 5. These cards do not have the “neighbors” icons, meaning that they only care about your status.

Here’s a note from Chris and Mike about the power level of those top-row benefits:

“Chris had the idea for tech cards that require charmed cards or income 5 cards. But once that was established, we made sure that as many of the cards for this expansion had charms so they would be useful. Chris also wanted tech cards with some powerful square abilities, but they turned out to be way too powerful in the hands of really talented players. So Mike suggested making them single use. Once it’s done, flip the card over and there just is no square benefit to gain any more. But it still counts as a tech card for scoring.”

I really like the designs of these new tech cards, and they’re brought to life by Andrew Bosley’s art.

Changing gears for a moment, related to this third and final expansion is that we’ve heard a number of people ask if we might make an organizer box for Tapestry, ala Scythe’s Legendary Box or Wingspan’s Nesting Box.

However, Tapestry comes in a pretty big box, so I polled Tapestry fans a while ago to see if they’d rather us make an organizer box (which would be a quite expensive) or if they would be just as interested in a well-designed, custom insert that fits all Tapestry components (including all three expansions, and including third-party accessories like base snaps) into the original box. The majority chose the custom insert.

We rarely work directly with third-party accessory creators, but in this case we thought we could best serve Tapestry fans by partnering with Folded Space. That way we could test the insert as it evolved, and we could reveal the various secrets of the third expansion to facilitate in the creation of the insert.

The result is that on March 1, you can order the official insert for Tapestry on our webstore along with the expansion. They’re both in stock in our fulfillment centers (you can also order it directly from Folded Space). I have an advance copy, and I’m so impressed with what Folded Space created, especially the full-color printing that brings the insert to life thematically (and in terms of utility).

Which tech card do you want to invent? I’ll be back tomorrow to talk about the capital cities. You can also follow even more detailed reveals from Chris on his designer blog: https://ferventworkshop.com/tapestry-fantasies-and-futures/

February 21: Tapestry Cards, Charm, Income Turn 5, and Replacement Cards

A core element of Tapestry are the tapestry cards themselves. The game presents players with free tapestry cards in their income turns and ample opportunities to draw more cards, and it’s your choice as to which tapestry card you play and when to play it to define the evolution of your civilization.

There are 38 new tapestry cards in Fantasies & Futures, and like everything else in the expansion, they’re designed to be shuffled into the components you already own. Many of them include two new low-overhead concepts that Chris and Mike do a great job of explaining:

Links and charms: Even before we had started brainstorming for the third expansion, Mike had come up with the idea that he called “links,” which eventually became Tapestry charms as we firmed up the theme.

The original idea was that we could create cards that were strong for the end, but had a right-hand link that was more helpful for the beginning, and vice versa. This would allow the Tapestry cards to be flexible and also would give an interesting decision: play the card now for the charm or wait for the main effect of the card. It didn’t work out. Playtesters resisted the cards, saying they felt they were never getting the full benefit of the card.

We reworked the charms so that they dovetailed with the main effect, both in mechanics and theme, while still attending to the overall balance among Tapestry cards. As a result, the cards became much more popular.

Below are examples of Tapestry cards, with charm on the left and right sides, respectively. Gain a left-side charm bonus when you play the card (e.g., Alien Disclosure) to the right of another tapestry card; gain the right bonus (e.g., Interdimensional Trade) the first time you place a tapestry card to the right of this card.

Income turn 5 and beyond: The other extremely early idea was a new type of Tapestry card, Endgame cards. These would be cards that might give something immediately, but the full thrust was that they gave points during the 5th income turn for meeting a certain condition. These were also not popular. Tapestry is a game of “what can I do now?,” and with endgame cards not giving much of an immediate benefit, they were just not played.

Chris reworked them to the [5] cardmat mechanic, where the Tapestry cards would place something on a special [5] cardmat located between the income mat and the capital city, while still providing an immediate benefit (such as a charm or at least getting to remove an income building from the mat and thereby enhance income). This was way more popular and also solved the question of “what happens if an endgame card gets covered.” As long as there is a thing on the [5] cardmat (i.e., you have scheduled an event to happen in the future during the 5th income turn), then it will happen even if the card that placed the thing on [5] became covered.

Below is a Tapestry card that makes use of the [5] cardmat, as well as a prototype of the [5] cardmat itself.

I love the new tapestry cards. They’re full of flavor, with the theme of each tied directly to the mechanisms. The charm bonuses feel great to get (free stuff!), and it’s nice to end your game with a boom via the income turn 5 benefits.

Creating Fantasies & Futures also gave us the opportunity to fix a few minor typos on cards, so we’ve included these 5 cards in the expansion too:

Which tapestry card do you want to play first? I’ll be back tomorrow to talk about the tech cards. You can also follow even more detailed reveals from Chris on his designer blog: https://ferventworkshop.com/tapestry-fantasies-and-futures/

February 20: The Origins of Fantasies & Futures, Civilizations, and Packaging

Years ago when I was brainstorming ideas for Tapestry, the central theme was that I wanted to create a civilization game in which players could write their own histories from very beginning, with civilizations diverging greatly from real-world history based on the order of various advancements.

However, there was one key idea that I ended up scrapping at the time: How would our world be different if something truly magical were discovered? What if we unearthed dragon eggs or if superpowers were real? Just like in Mistborn and the Legend of Korra, how would these discoveries impact a civilization?

Of course, Tapestry delves slightly into those themes (aliens, time travel, etc), but the third expansion seemed like the right time to dive deep into fantasy and sci-fi themes while still grounding them in the many real-world advancements, tapestries, and technologies showcased in Tapestry, Plans & Ploys, and Arts & Architecture.

After considering a game submission from designer Chris Scaffidi that was a little too close to Tapestry (but did a good job of exploring fictional themes), I asked Chris if he might consider working with Arts & Architecture lead designer Mike Young on the third Tapestry expansion. I took more of a development role in this expansion, and I think both Chris and Mike did a superb job bringing Fantasies & Futures to life, as did artist Andrew Bosley.

Chris, Mike, and I had the opportunity to chat in person about the expansion at the 2021 Stonemaier Games Design Day. In that discussion and email conversations that followed, I steered them towards the core concept of a “more stuff” expansion, with more civs, capital cities, tapestry cards, and tech cards easily shuffled into the core game components. You can play Fantasies & Futures with any combination of Tapestry and the other expansions.

Today I’d like to showcase a few of the 10 new civilizations in Fantasies & Futures, the Weefolk and Faefolk. Here’s a note from Chris and Mike about these two:

“Chris’s game design company focuses on games about weefolk (e.g., gnomes, pixies and goblins), so it was important from a brand standpoint to include at least 1 or 2 related civilizations in the game. Folklore says the weefolk of many varieties secretly live in quiet spots among humans, such as in barns or woods, and they come out to help humans as long as they’re treated nicely.

We reflected this in the expansion by letting the Weefolk place tokens on other players’ boards, achieving a mutual benefit. Folklore says the Faefolk–aka fairies–travel between some other “abode” and our normal universe. We reflected this in the game by letting the Faefolk cycle among different benefits, depending on how they manipulate their civilization’s development (in terms of Tapestry card count).”

If you’ve followed Tapestry, you probably know that we’ve collected data for years to continue to balance slightly overpowered and slightly underpower civilizations. As usual, the last page of the Fantasies & Futures rulebook includes some basic starting adjustments to some civilizations. We are also working on a more comprehensive, heavy-handed civ adjustment process that takes into account a number of factors; it should be available in late 2023 (it wasn’t ready to include in this expansion).

Given that all of the core components were flat and printed, I realized that we could release the expansion in the very eco-friendly format of a sturdy-yet-recyclable courier envelope. Every copy of the expansion (including retail copies) are packaged in these envelopes.

If you order just the expansion by itself, the envelope is designed so our fulfillment centers can simply apply a label to the back of the envelope and drop it in the mail. Not only is this more environmentally friendly in terms of reducing packaging, but it also expedites the fulfillment process. We tested several versions of the envelope to ensure that it would properly protect the components within, and I’m really happy with the final result.

Of course, if you want to add other items on our webstore to your order (like the new custom insert, which I’ll discuss soon), you’re welcome to do that. Consolidating multiple items into a single shipment is also eco-friendly.

Of those revealed, which civilization are you the most excited to try first? I’ll be back tomorrow to talk about the tapestry cards. You can also follow even more detailed reveals from Chris on his designer blog: https://ferventworkshop.com/tapestry-fantasies-and-futures/

  1. Hi,

    GENIES civ says:
“That opponent chooses and scores 1 circled benefit.
You score that same circled benefit and gain a squared benefit adjacent to the chosen circled benefit. ”

Does GENIES player gain one circuled benefit and only one squared benefit?

Circled benefit has two squared benefits adjacent to it.
Does this mean that the GENIES player gain to choose one of the squared benefits?

    Thanks.

    1. Yasu: Thanks for your question! I’ll use an example to demonstrate what happens: You randomly select a blue player token. The blue player (an opponent) chooses to score 1 VP for each tech card they have. You also score for every tech card you have. Then, you either gain 1 explore benefit or advance on 1 random track via the science die.

      1. Thank you for the detailed explanation.
        I understand it very well!

However, I have the impression that the GENIES is much weaker if it has only one benefit. (For example, a new Alchemist gain 2x VP of Red die and science die (with benefit!).)

Also, especially in a 2-player game, the points you give to your opponent are more.
I also feel that there is little benefit from the 5th income turn.

The concept of GENIES granting 3 wishes is very interesting, but I don’t think you would grant the same wish to the same person.

I understand that the tapestry is complete with the new civilization pack, so further adjustments would be difficult, but if there is an opportunity, I would like to see the FF civilization adjusted as well.

        Thank you very much!

        1. We’ll consider that if the data we collect indicates imbalances in the FF civs, but currently that is not the case.

  2. Clarification for the Illuminati civ.

When an opponent rolls the conquer dice, they choose the reward of the red OR the black die. Do both players get the same reward as the active player has chosen?

    1. “When an opponent takes the conquest dice from your mat, you gain both of the benefits rolled.” You gain both benefits, even if the opponent only gets one.

  3. Hi Jamey
Sorry if this question was already answered before.

SOOTHSAYING tapestry card says: “WHEN PLAYED: Reveal 5 tapestry cards from the deck. For each with a charm bonus, gain 1 resource and score 2 VP, then give that card to an opponent. Discard the other revealed cards.”

I first understood that you give the SOOTHSAYING tapestry card to an opponent, but I think I misunderstood.

I think it actually means that you give the revealed card with a charm bonus to an opponent after gaining 1 resource and 2 VP, and you do it for each revealed card with a charm bonus.

Thanks in advance for your confirmation. With this final expansion, there are so many Tapestry cards and so many combinations, each game feels so different from the previous one. It’s really fun 😊

    1. “I think it actually means that you give the revealed card with a charm bonus to an opponent after gaining 1 resource and 2 VP, and you do it for each revealed card with a charm bonus.”

This is correct! :) I’m glad you’re having fun with the final deck of Tapestry cards.

  4. With the Elder Ones, if you play a Tapestry card after your 5th income turn would you still gain Right Charm bonuses from a card played on your 4th income turn or not because you play it on top of that card?

    1. I looked up the Elder Ones, and this seemed fine, but then I double-checked the rules on charms, and they say, “Gain the right bonus the first time you place a tapestry card to the right of this tapestry card.” So, if you’re triggering a charm bonus for the first time, it’s fine, but you can’t trigger the same charm bonus multiple times.

    1. It seems like the right time, and it allowed us to help create an insert that can hold all Tapestry components in the original box.

      1. Yes but why? Why only 3 expansions for eternity? there will be a tapestry 2? thank you

  5. Hi,

I just put together and packaged the insert with all three expansions. Is there a list of rules/papers that should be included/excluded? I am guessing we should include the 2 player variant?

    Thanks,
    Jayson

    1. Thanks Jayson! All the rules you need for Tapestry are included in the consolidated rulebooks we packaged with Fantasies & Futures, with the one exception of the Shadow Empire variant.

  6. I had a couple questions about the civilization adjustments for the Historians in the rulebook. An older set of adjustments gave the Historians -5 VP per opponent if playing with the Arts track. In the group I play with, the Historians regularly sweep the game by 100+ points. In the adjustments in this rulebook, the Historians no longer lose points, and they get to play an additional tapestry card. What was the reasoning behind the adjustment, since it seems to help an already strong civ? Or are the Historians not as strong as they seem?

Also in the adjustment it says the Heralds may not play Renaissance on top of Maker of Fire. Is this a typo or does it mean that if the Historians and the Heralds are in the game, then the Heralds can’t play Renaissance?

    1. Isaac: Data for the Historians has evolved over time, hence the adjustments. They will have pretty significant changes in the final civ pack, though.

“Also in the adjustment it says the Heralds may not play Renaissance on top of Maker of Fire.”

      This is correct.

  7. I can’t find where it tells you what the 10 new civilizations are. Can someone tell what they are or where that info can be found?

  8. I need clarification for the Erratics Automa.

It states, “The Automa advances twice and gains benefits as usual.
•Any advance from this that would take it more than 2 spaces ahead of you is ignored unless it’s the Automa’s favorite track.
•The Automa gains 3 VP per advance thus ignored.”

Does the Automa advance the first time as usual and then not advance the second time if it is more than 2 spaces ahead thus gaining 3VP?

Or does it not advance either time if it is more than 2 spaces ahead and gain 6VP?

    1. Both advances follow the same rules, so if it’s 2 spaces ahead before the first advance, it will stay in place and gain 6 VP.

  9. Clarification for the Illuminati civ.

When an opponent rolls the conquer die, they stay off of the Illuminati civilization mat. When the Illuminati player conquers later (before taking an income turn), do the conquer die return to the civ mat, or stay off until next income turn? Not sure if I’m asking clearly but would like some help, thanks.

    1. Here’s what I think is the part in question on the Illuminati: “If you take a die from your mat to roll it, put it back onto your mat after you roll. But if an opponent rolls a die, leave it off your mat until your next income turn. If an opponent rerolls a die, you may gain only from the first roll immediately after they take the die.”

You’re asking what happens if–while the dice aren’t on your mat–you make a conquer roll. The dice stay off your mat, as they haven’t met the conditions listed on the civ to return to the mat.

  10. Any chance the landmark buildings will be available somewhere? It’s a shame to only have the cards the buildings are my favorite components of the game :P

    1. Of course! Landmark miniatures are found in Tapestry and the first two expansions. The landmark cards in Fantasies & Futures are replacements for some incorrectly mirrored landmark cards in Arts & Architecture–if you get that expansion, you’ll have the corresponding landmark minis.

  11. Hi,

I’m not noticing any difference between the replacement Oil Paint and Landmark Cards from ones included with AA. The Migration one is different with the replacement saying territory instead of space.

I did pick up AA at the same time as the FF expansion. Did the latest printing of AA correct the issues of the Oil Paint and Landmark Cards?

    1. Yes, it’s noted just a few lines above this on the page: “The package also includes a few replacement cards from previous expansions: 3 landmark cards, Oil Paint, and Migration.” :)

      1. Yeah I saw that. I swapped out the Migration one but am not seeing a difference in the landmark and Oil Paint cards vs the ones I got in my AA expansion.

Did those get automatically updated in the latest printing of AA?

        1. Right, if you have the newest printings, they’ve already been fixed (it wasn’t automatic, but they were fixed when we found the mistake in the first printing).

  12. I’m writing this as I wait for my game of Tapestry to finish. The downtime is insane, if you end up out against certain civs. We played the Elder Ones, Historians, and Recyclers. I got the Recyclers, and despite being second to last to get to the 4th income phase, I have been doing nothing for 20 minutes waiting for the Elder Ones, who get a 5th turn of advancements, and the Historians, who gets a wealth of resources in their current state, to finish their games. I’m sure this isn’t a common thing, but I’m hoping some of the future adjustments limit how much time players end up sitting out doing nothing as others finish, as the comparison another player made to me was, “It’s like when you’re eliminated from Risk!”

Anyway, just an initial impression on my first play with F&F. I know this isn’t probably going to be a huge issue, but it is concerning that there is potential for players to be essentially doing nothing for extended periods of time.

    1. I’m sorry that you had that experience, Joseph. My experience with Tapestry is that when there are only 1 or 2 players remaining, there is very little time left in the game, as it’s only those players making decisions and typically the actions they’re taking cost more, so they have fewer actions to take. I get that those two factions are somewhat the exception to the norm–particularly having both of them in play–and likewise I think it’s exceptionally rare that this would happen. Hopefully the remaining players were considerate of your time and attention span as they continued to deliberate!

      1. Jamey, I appreciate the response. It is a competitive bunch I play with. Their deliberations may have inflated the time some as well.

I do have one other question, is the form for logging game scores going to be updated to include the F&F civs? I went to log scores for out game, but was unable to as the latest expansions civs weren’t on the list.

          1. Judging from the wording of Joseph’s initial note above, they also might not have played the Elder Ones correctly. After Income Turn 5, the Elder Ones get to keep taking turns. But they don’t get to take ALL of their turns at once. They simply keep taking A turn, in the usual play order.

  13. I just recently purchased Fantasies and Futures and I have questions about the rules, especially concerning Income Turn 5 and all the additional things this expansion lets you do during that final turn of the Game. I’ve played Tapestry many many times and always previously, Income Turn 5 was always kind of a final scoring turn (as opposed to an “action” turn). You would activate your Civilization if applicable and any Masterpieces. Then you would upgrade a tech card of your choice and then score VP and THEN, because players rarely, if ever, had any “left over” resources from era 4, your game was over. No more Advance Turns! Now with FF it seems like players would have resources and actions to take during or after Income Turn 5, leaving the possibility of taking Advance Turns during or after Income Turn 5. Am I correct? Bottom line in all the Tapestry games I have played I cannot remember taking Advance Turns during or after Income Turn 5 and now with FF it seems like I will quite possibly have several Advance Turns to play. Otherwise why would I reserve resources or other items for Income Turn 5 if I can’t use them?

    1. Income turn 5 is your final turn–this is the rule. The types of things reserved to gain during that turn (in Fantasies & Futures) are for scoring, not resources.

  14. When playing the game solo as the Genies, how does the automa chose and score one of the circled benefits? Do we use a tiebreaker system on the decision cards?

    1. Thanks, and sorry for the confusion. Here’s an answer from the FAQ:

Which civilizations should be removed from the game when playing solo?

Advisors*, Futurists*, Genies (F&F), Heralds*, Illuminati (F&F), Inventors*, Spies (P&P), Traders, and Weefolk (F&F).

*These civilizations may be used, but they will either unfairly benefit or hurt you.

  15. For the Savanna capital city mat, are the Grey unblocked areas considered covered for rows and columns scoring?

  16. Can I get a parts list for Tapestry: Fantasies & Futures Expansion? My order arrived via UPS and the envelope was not sealed – the tape wasn’t even pulled on the sticky, never mind it being folder over.

    Thanks
    Keith

    1. I’m sorry to hear that, Keith. The contents are 10 new civilizations, 6 advanced capital city mats, 38 new tapestry cards, 12 new tech cards, and 3 Automa cards, along with 5 replacement cards (see photo on this page), 2 rulebooks, and 1 Shadow Empire variant guide.

      1. This also happened to me, and the capital city mats, civs and rulebooks were all bent. No dramas though, I’m sure they will straighten out, but maybe consider putting something rigid in the envelope to keep it a bit more sturdy if you take the same approach in future?

        1. Thanks for that feedback! They should bend back the other way and be good as new. We tried to make the envelope quite sturdy, but that’s a good idea about adding a reinforcing piece of cardboard inside the envelope too.

  17. Got the expansion — Almost 100% “Eco-Friendly” package. It’s about 90%. Those 3 stacks of cards used plastic wrapper. Why didn’t they use the paper strap like Civ cards and Adv. City maps had on them? It would have been 100% plastic free expansion. Mmm, gotta work on that.

    1. Sure, let’s think about that for a second, as there is a clear answer: Paper bands only work around cards if the cards don’t have any chance of slipping out of the bands (like when they’re in a designated slot in an insert). We’ve used this method in some of our products when applicable; it did not, unfortunately apply to Tapestry: Fantasies & Futures. As advertised, we said, “It is packaged in an eco-friendly, sturdy, recyclable envelope.”; we did not mention anything about 100% eco-friendly packaging.

      1. Just to reply on this – how about using both a vertical and a horizontal paper band? Would that be secure?

        1. We’ve asked Panda to do that, but apparently it is not an option with the current machines that wrap cards with paper bands. The machines can only apply one paper band in one direction (I’m guessing the bands get caught in the machine if they try to run them through again).

  18. Just to make sure: the automa rulebook does not mention the F&F civilizations to be removed. This is an error that is corrected in the FAQ, right?

Also, the new rulebook mentions 18 civilizations for the base game. The correct count should be 16, shouldn’t it?

  19. Damn, I wasn’t expecting to get the expansion that fast ! Just got it today woohoo. Thanks for the awesome work :)

  20. Hi Jamey,

I asked this on BGG today but ill post it here too as it might be easier for you to see.
Which books do I still need and which can I discard?
    I have:
-Shadow Empire 2p variant (single page)
    -Arts and Architecture rulebook.
-Art and architecture automa & shadow empire.
-3 reference guide (2x looks the same, for military, tech, science&exploration track icons and back is tech cards. 1x is a smaller one with arts track icons and some tech cards.)
    -oversized rulebook (from original game)
Oversized automa rules (i suspect from original)
-Plans and ploys rule book (smaller rulebook)
-Plans and ploys automa & shadow empire.
Some kind of shadow empire variant single sided cardboard rulesheet.
-The 2 new tapestry rulebooks (solo and normal) that came with this expansion.

Obviously I keep the new solo and normal rulebooks but from all the other content, I am not sure which duplicates all info and which is included in the new rules. Id rather keep my box free from unnecessary booklets that duplicate info.

    1. We’ve replaced all previous rulebooks and reference guides with the new rulebooks (and the Shadow Empire variant), so you could feasibly recycle everything else. However, given that it’s handy to have extra reference guides to pass around the table, I’d recommend keeping the old reference guides.

      1. Awesome thats what I was hoping. I was looking at the shadow empire vartiant and in the expansion’s rulebooks and they seem to vary a little bit (setup for instance) from the new solo rulebook so I wasnt sure if I needed to mix match but if the new one is the go-to, thats best so Ill probably follow your advice and keep some extra reference guides since they are only one page and the new books. Much appreciated thanks!

  21. Hello Jamie, Very excited about the new Tapestry Expansion! My finger is above the “Purchase” button, twitching in anticipation, but I have questions about the custom insert. I love me my wooden inserts. Bought them for Scythe and Wingspan. Got me my Big Boxes. Does this insert replace all the custom plastic inserts for Tapestry and all expansions? How does this custom insert handle all of the buildings? How does it all fit?

    1. It does indeed fit all miniatures! There are some good photos on the Folded Space website and I showed my copy on today’s livestream.

  22. Is it correct that there isn’t discount for Tapestry products in the EU store? Price is much higher than in the US store.

    1. You should see the discounted prices in your cart. You can also switch to British pounds–for some reason the webstore will show the sale prices in that currency but not Euros. Either way, when you check out, you’ll see the sale prices.

  23. Hi Jamey! Those of us in Singapore are now being served from the Aus store. Any idea what that store will restock the other Tapestry expansions (A&A and P&P)?

    1. They’re back in stock now–sorry, we were just a little slow to update the inventory this morning.

  24. the canadian webstore has been sold out of the tapestry playmat for a while…any chance we could pay a discounted preorder price for when it comes back in stock ❓

    1. Possibly. It depends on where they ship from. Most likely we’ll need to restock from the US, so there’s an extra cost for us to get them to our Canadian warehouse in the first place.

  25. Good morning Jamey,

Just had a quick question: Now that F&F will be hitting thousands of table tops and will be in the hands of the public will any issues or misprints that we find (such as the two below me) be resolved in future reprints? I’m guessing this will be the case since this is the last tapestry expansion but I just wanted to get an answer straight from you and be 100% sure.

    Thanks!

    1. Matt: It’s pretty rare that we reprint expansions, so there’s a 90% chance that the first printing of Tapestry FF will be the only printing. If someday–2, 3, 4 years in the future–we decide there’s enough demand to reprint it, of course we’ll fix a few minor typos.

  26. Very excited for this expansion, Tapestry is one our favourite games and this looks like it’ll really round everything out.

One quick note, from the dropbox fil it looks like the complete rulebook gives adjustment notes of the Heralds to the Historians.

I’m also very excited for the final civ adjustments, I really like how they’ll level the playing field and bring a little spice to some of the less-loved Civs.

  27. Looking forward to this expansion. I think there’s an image error in the rulebook under Civilisation adjustment, for the Traders and Chosen. They both use the Alchemist Image

  28. Super stoked to see this game get an All in one insert as well as more content. I love this game. Please use this opportunity to physically update and rework some of the older Civs. Giving starting VP or extra resources is really just a bandaid fix. They need a more interesting change pretty please!

  29. Will the expansion be ready to ship march 1st or is it a pre-order? If it is a pre-order when can we expect it to ship by?

    1. The expansion is in stock (as is the new insert) and is ready to ship throughout March (fulfillment centers need a few days to process and optimize orders).

    1. John: Shipping will happen through mid-March. Champions get a 20% discount on shipping, and the free shipping threshold is meant to be $125 for everyone. [Edit: removed for non-Champions and $100 for Champions (we’re still trying to get the webstore to work with those different amounts, so I can’t make a guarantee about it yet).]

  30. Hi Jamey,

We had a great time playing our first game of Tapestry last week! I jumped the gun and bought some 3rd party 3D printed snap bases for the base game and A&A landmarks. You mentioned in the F&F description that “fan-made snap bases” will be available. Are these 3D printed or molded plastic? Excited to place a few Tapestry orders on March 1!

    1. Nate: Sorry for the confusion, but what’s actually said on the above page is that the Folded Space insert fits fan-made base snaps. So if you print or buy (from a third party) the unofficial base snaps, they’ll fit in the new insert.

      1. Oh wonderful! I did read that Tapestry base game insert does struggle with fitting some of the 3rd party base snaps. Glad the new insert accounts for that. It appears you changed the wording since my post. Thanks for the clarification!

  31. Hi Jamey,

I just wanted to ask if the folded space inserts will accommodate card sleeves. So far I can only find the Mayday USA Chimera sleeves (57.5x89mm) to use on the cards. I can slice off the extra 2mm length if needed but the width wont be adjustable :(

  32. Hi Jamey & SG team, thanks for this game. It seems that “easy to learn hard to master” and fluid games are your specialty. Thanks for that and for the hours spent on Tapestry.
Concerning F&F, do you plan to include the three Landmarks cards with a shape error (from the A&A expansion) ?
Regarding the civilization adjustments, do you plan to include a “if won during the game” part to each civilization? Or allow player to draw 2/choose 1 civilizations when he has to win one? The draw is sometimes very disappointing.
Thanks again, good luck with the latest developments!

  33. Is it reasonable to expect to be able to order Arts & Architecture, Fantasies & Futures, and the new insert next month? Arts seems to be out of stock everywhere. Thanks!

    1. We already have! It’s the box that the core game comes in. At the same time as Fantasies & Futures, we’re releasing an insert that fits into the original Tapestry box and holds all Tapestry content.

  34. As you’ve partnered with the great folks at Folded Space to make an official insert, will it be possible to order both the expansion and the insert directly from you?

It will minimize the ecological footprint, if enough people are interested. Both the expansion and the insert look really promising, by the way!

I’m going to get both, no matter what, so getting them bundled up into one package would be awesome (and better for the environment).

    1. Indeed, we will be selling both at the same time–they’ll ship together from us if you buy them together. :)

  35. Hey Jamey,

Super to hear more is coming to one of my playing groups favorite game..
I do feel a bit disappointed that i have bought a e-raptor wooden insert some time ago and the new expansion will probably won’t fit with it.
    But I’m not complaining,
Can’t wait for it be available.

    Sammy

    1. Sammy: Since the new expansion is just mats and cards, the components might actually fit in your insert. Try it and let me know! :)

      1. Hey Jamey, what’s the rough shipping likely to be to the UK for the expansion and the folded space insert? I’ve not ordered anything directly from you before so keen to know! Cheers

        1. Thanks for making this your first order with us, Simon! Shipping for Stonemaier Champions (a membership program that anyone can sign up for to save 20% on all orders) should happen mostly the week of March 6, followed the next week by non-Champions. Our fulfillment centers are in the UK, Australia, the US, and Canada (so your order will ship from the UK).

  36. Hi Jamey! I like a lot that you are using eco-friendly package for the expansion. However, tapestry is one of the few games I keep the boxes because the art is gorgeous and the illustration of F&F is incredible. Will be the envelope resistent enough to preserve the image? Are you planning to release and artbook or something similar? Thanks and congrats for this amazing game.

    1. Thanks Jose! I think you could keep that image, though it’s also found on one of the civs in the game. I fully support artist Andrew releasing an art book someday. :)

    2. We are very excited about the new expansion. We hold tournaments that put civ vs civ ! We can’t wait, the next item we purchase will be the playmat! Wow!!

  37. Dear Jamey,

Thanks for all your hard work, quick replies in comments, blogs, and many other things left unmentioned.

I am waiting to pull the trigger on a big Tapestry haul in which I would purchase everything that is to offer in one go. A&A is out of stock. The revised cards come much later in ‘23. Do you believe it to be possible to wait till ‘much later’ for A&A to also be there?

    Regards

    1. Migration should say “territory” instead of “space”; for Oil Paint, the “you or your neighbors” icon is missing.

  38. Hey Jamey!
First off, congrats on the upcoming Scythe game. Looks interesting. This Tapestry expansion sounds like just what I was looking for. I like more Tapestry cards and Tech cards but don’t need any more miniatures. Tapestry already has so many nice ones.
I saw mention of the Civ Adjustment pack. May I know if the adjustments are all finalized? If so, is there a link to the final adjusted factions? I’d love to see where we ended up at the end. I have hundreds of games of Tapestry under my belt and have one several Tapestry tourneys on BGA (and was for a while World ELO #1 at Wingspan) and have a lot of interest in where the balance ended up. I remember being a bit perplexed when the Treasure Hunters had a -2 resources handicap as I couldn’t figure out where exactly they were perceived as powerful.
Anyway, thanks for all of the recent updates and glad to see SMG is kicking butt!

    1. Our preorder (and the cost announcement) isn’t until March 1–no stores should be selling something for which they know so little information at this point. I hope it’s just a soft reservation and that they didn’t take your money for it.

  39. I see the official Tapestry insert will be from Folded Space which they use foam material. No wooded one? Why not? Wood are much thinner and stronger than the foam one, in my opinion. I am bummed about this. I prefer wood insert one.

  40. Hi, The adjusted civ pack will include all the published civs (solving the flipped backs issue from 1st printing)? Or only the adjusted ones?

  41. Looking forward to this and the next printing of A&A! It’s going to very much be a “shut up and take my money” moment.

The only thing I do wish were expanded upon in Tapestry is the Achievements. I wish there were more of them. Having the same three every game just doesn’t impact play enough. Seeing something like “First to place all of one kind of income building” or “Have 8 of one resource after an income turn” or even “Have 3 tech cards upgraded to the third row” would be nice. Two of the three their seem to primarily focus on the military track so it would be nice to see some options out there for players focusing on other tracks.

  42. Hi Jamey, Just wanted to check that that Folded Space insert will be available in all fulfilment hubs. I’m a big fan of their inserts and held off buying the present insert when I heard that this expansion was in the works.

  43. So does this mean there won’t be an official Stonemaier Big Box for Tapestry?
I know I’d prefer a nice Gamestrayz type of insert where everything has its own place.
Not keen on having the minis knocking against each other as they are in the folded space insert.

    1. The custom insert designed by Folded Space gives everything its own place. There won’t be a big box.

  44. Is the revised / rebalance pack being delayed in the event there are any adjustments as a result of this expansion?

  45. Hi! Very excited to expand Tapestry! Just wondering if the insert allows one to organize cards etc so the expansions are separate from each other and the base game? Or if everything stays together?Thank you!

    1. Just as the game is designed to mix everything together, the insert is designed the same way. There are designated slots for each type of card.

  46. “Includes a complete and comprehensive rulebook for Tapestry and all 3 expansions.”

I love it! Thank you for including the complete rulebook in the last expansion. Hope we will see more of that with the future games.

  47. I don’t see an option to actually order this expansion and the organizer. Is that what goes live March 1st? The FB live video made it seem like I could preorder this now (made my Expeditions preorder already).

  48. Hiya Jamey! Is the insert included in this expansion? Or is that separate? I can’t seem to find it listed on your site separately just that it will be an optional thing available when the expansion is.

  49. How long will this expansion be available for preorder? Will the price go up after the preorder date? I’m hoping to get this and the new Scythe sequel at the same time?

    1. It’ll be available on March 1 until supplies run out. The price will probably go up after the first few days. I would not suggest ordering it with Expeditions, as Expeditions won’t deliver until July, while the Tapestry expansion will ship in March.

  50. Ugh… such mixed feelings and emotions from today’s announcement. We are thrilled to get new tapestry cards. Yes, we love what’s been announced today and appreciate the work that went into this product.

But… I can’t help but feel a little disappointed to see something that’s not terribly expansive. No new track. (Sad). No new landmarks. (Truly sad). No new exciting dimension to the game.

We are champions. We have almost every Stonemaier game. But Tapestry is probably our “favorite” and we go back to it time and time again. It really survives, out of the many hundreds of board games we own as a reliable stalwart. I was hoping for an expansion that was more fun and more complex. And possibly something that took gameplay in Tapestry to another level.

I know Jamie was very excited about the new scythe universe stand alone game. I’m happy for him but then I realize … we have ALL of the Scythe expansions and we have ALL of the Taoestry expansions. Number of times we’ve played Scythe in the last 12 months ? Zero. Number of times we’ve played Tapestry in the last 12 months? At least Twelve. If you want to get huge quantities of your fans really excited? As excited as Jamie was today? Announce another Tapestry game in the Tapestry universe. Or that demand has pushed you to do another expansion to Tapestry. The game is robust and playable enough to handle it.

Cheers and success. (Note: we will definitely be ordering the new tapestry product when it’s available. We will probably order the Scythe universe game as well.., although I worry it won’t be played much).

    1. Would you consider waiting until you’ve played the new expansion until you determine if it’s fun? The designers put a ton of work into it, and we wouldn’t release something we didn’t think would be something Tapestry fans would enjoy.

      1. Jamie, I have no doubt the expansion for Tapestry will be fun. And I am appreciative to get it. But I think there is still a hunger for a more robust Tapestry expansion. One with more landmarks, a new track, and maybe a new dimension of play. In the meantime I’ll be happy for this expansion, but I wanted to let you know many of us who play tapestry regularly still want another expansion after this one. Thank you.

    2. I mostly agree with this comment… I’ll take what I can get and all… but the words I really don’t want to hear is this is the final expansion. Mainly because I feel like there is some considerable room for growth. I was hoping for another track or a hail mary… a coop expansion… anything to expand what I consider to be the most interesting SM game.

Instead I get more stuff… and the “final” words…

Too bad… fan variant creators unite and craft something that destroys those final words…

    3. I am very happy to see this expansion is mostly “plug and play” and easy to integrate. For sure it gives new mechanics, but I also like that it does not add more “volume” to the game with new boards / miniatures.
Similar to new deck of cards to viticulture, I like those expansions a lot, and really improve and refresh the game

  51. Hi Jamey, im intrigued by the line “It is packaged in an eco-friendly, recyclable envelope.” what does this mean ? the expansion doesn’t come in a traditional box? im assuming something more robust than a letter envelope?

      1. As a long-time customer I want to express my appreciation seeing those changes towards more eco-friendly packaging solutions, and also the use of less packaging material overall.

Not just for this expansion, but also for the past games already – for example biodegradable bags to hold meeples.

    1. Jamey showed a little of the insert in the live chat this morning, and it certainly looked similar in terms of structure, but the official one has Tapestry-specific art on the insert components. There may be other differences as well, but that was the most obvious difference.

        1. Any idea if the current one would fit the third expansion? It just hit the states around November so I scooped it up then… but this is kind of a bummer.
