200+ Artists and Graphic Designers Whose Work I Love – Stonemaier Games

200+ Artists and Graphic Designers Whose Work I Love

I love beautiful products. In the world of board games, a huge part what draws me into a game and continues to immerse me is the game’s art.

It’s for that reason that a huge part of the budget for every Stonemaier game is for the art, graphic design, and (if applicable), 3D sculpting/modeling. It’s also for that reason that we put the artist’s name right on the front of the box, along with the designers:

Over the last 7 years, I’ve compiled a list of over 200 artists and graphic designers whose work intrigues me. Some of these people have worked on board games; others haven’t, but I bet they’d do a great job for that medium.

Today I’d like to share that list with you. It includes my brief notes about the artist’s style, whether they’re a graphic designer, and if they do 3D sculpting/modeling. I’ve tried to include their website (if available) and games they’ve worked on, but there are gaps of information here. If someone wants to volunteer to fill them in, let me know; in the meantime, I have a publishing company to run. :)

While this is a curated list, this is truly not meant as a commentary on the quality of artists who aren’t on the list. I haven’t gone through every Artstation page and BoardGameGeek listing; really, this is just a list to which I’ve added whenever it’s occurred to me to do so. I don’t want to see a bunch of comments from people saying, “I can’t believe you didn’t include _______!”

Instead, just say, “One of my favorite artists, known for ____________, is _________. I like them because __________.” Cool? Cool. Oh, and definitely don’t trash anyone on this list unless they’ve done something terrible on a human level (and in that case, let me know about it privately so I can remove them).

Also, if you’re an artist, graphic designer, and/or 3D modeler who is not on this list and would like people to check out your work, please share your portfolio link in the comments.

Thanks to Brian Henk of Overworld Games for his contributions to this list a few years ago, and thanks to Eliot Miller, who posted about this topic on Facebook a few days ago. Eliot shared with me a great talk about working with artists.

If you would like Stonemaier Games specifically to consider your work for future projects, please fill out this form.

What are some of the ways you’ve discovered your favorite artists?

  1. One last art post for awhile which I’m duplicating from “Passive Information Collection Pays Off” to help keep suggestions consolidated here.

    Jean-Baptiste Monge

Fantasy and fantasy nature art which is whimsical and sometimes quirky, particularly with character design. I could see his work fitting alongside Wyrmspan, Libertalia, and perhaps a fantasy game stylized along the lines of Viticulture.

  30. Hello, I am looking for a graphic designer for a game. I reached out to several folks on the list above but thought I will also post a comment. Feel free to reach out if you are interested. our website is http://www.thefloodboardgame.com feel free to message us through the contact us page on the website.

  31. Jamey,

Your Kickstarter Lessons blogs have been absolutely invaluable to me, and I cannot thank you enough for posting these.

When I got the idea for a board game (and sadly only one idea), I formed a partnership with a friend of mine, whose day job is web design (including art and graphics) and web marketing, especially as it pertains to Google Adwords.

While I value the knowledge these experiences bring to our business, when it comes to the board game industry we are both neophytes. I feel like your blog has opened my eyes to a lot of common beginner mistakes when it comes to the business strategy end of things, but is there something similar in terms of art and graphics design? I realize we could just pay someone (if we had the money), but if we weren’t interested in stretching our skill sets we would have just tried to find a publisher.

    1. Kevin: That’s good question. Other than my articles on art and graphic design, I don’t have any such articles. It’s one of the reasons I prefer to work with experienced artists and graphic designers.

      1. Thanks Jamey,

With all the mechanics fleshed out, I kinda feel like I’m stuck in the back seat waiting for my artist. I guess the question I’m trying to answer is: how do I help my artist?

Maybe you might think this worthy of a blog entry, but I’m wondering what it’s been like for you working with artists? What process do you follow? If you have a separate illustrator vs designer, how do you help integrate their work so they produce a conducive whole? How much freedom do you give them? Has one of your artists or graphic designers suggested a mechanic that made it into the final game?

  35. Hello Jamey, I am a french feature films screenwriter currently working on a legacy coop game (like Gloomhaven). I love all your posts, youtube video, facebook live, and I needed some help. Through Artstation I identify and contacted an art designer. Now is the question of the price. I looked on boardgamegeek, lots of blog, but the same answer come : “it depends”. How do you think a prototype (meaning 20% of the full game to be able to show and launch on kickstarter) will cost in term of art ? I will need a map, a rulebook cover, 4 character cards, 10 items cards, 10 story cards, some illustrations for the kickstarter page. I’m sorry to bother you with this, but even an average number would help me a lot to evaluate the general cost of my prototype. Hope you’ll understand. Take care with all the things happening in every country. Fabien Suarez

    1. Fabien: It depends quite a bit on the artist, the amount of art, and the size of the art. A very rough estimate based on the numbers you provided is $3000 total.

  36. Great list, and I’ve found it just when I’m looking for new artists for a project, so that’s lucky. Just to say, I find Deviant art a great place to look for artists. If you’re willing to go down a lot of dead-ends I actually find pinterest a decent place to look for them too.

  37. Great list, and it’s very kind of you to share it! You invited others to post their portfolio links. Granted it was from months ago, but hopefully there’s no statute of limitations! :)

My name is Mike, I’ve been doing lots of work for Jellybean Games (including the successful ‘Dracula’s Feast’ Kickstarter), QSF Games (‘Muse: Awakenings’) and more, and my work can be seen at http://www.michaeldashow.com.

I’m also going to give a shout-out to Kyle Ferrin (https://www.instagram.com/d20plusmodifier/) who did the highly-lauded artwork for the game Root. He’s not a personal friend, I don’t know him at all, I just love his art! :D

    Cheers!

  38. That’s so great of you. Thank you for adding us all artists. It feels so special to be in the list 😀

  39. […] of marketability and inspiration. While the number of female game designers is small but growing, there are quite a few female illustrators, so the box is a great opportunity to feature them (and any illustrator–they have a big […]

  40. I just had the privilege of working with Aaron Griffin for our new game Crave. He crafted the cover art. What drew me to him was his concept art of Harry Potter through time. He is fantastic! :)

  41. I’ve just had the privilege of working with Aaron Griffin for our new game Crave. He crafted the cover art, and he is amazing as always. What drew me to him was his concept art of Harry Potter through the years. Aaron is really fantastic. :)

  42. […] Font and graphic design. This wasn’t in Wesley’s notes, but in my opinion it is the biggest reason the project is struggling. I think the font choice used on images throughout the project page doesn’t provide a good first impression. Graphic design makes a huge difference–it can make or break a project–and I would recommend that Wesley look through my list of graphic designers for an upgrade. […]

  43. A great resource. Thanks for putting this together. My husband, Kurt Keller, is a graphic designer and I’m an illustrator. We work in a variety of styles and have helped bring many games to the market with Roosterfin Games. Those were kid’s games, but we can definitely design and illustrate for other genres, and would love to, in fact. You can see our work on our Imagine That! Design site: http://www.imaginethatdesignnyc.com and my illustration site: http://www.tracivanwagoner.com

    Thanks!

  44. Always cool such a list. Several years ago I was responsible for the battlefleet gothic fanzine Warp Rift. I often approached people in hobby who created beautiful artwork to add their stuff to the fanzine.
Always cool to do such things.

Especially the game supplement I created with some of them. With their art enhancing the story and scenarios I developed.

I still thank Khar for what he made for the Starblade book I created for BFG. :)

  45. Thanks Jamie for this great resource. I gotta give a shoutout to the amazing artists I’ve been working with who’ve made my vision a reality. Travis Hanson creates whimsical, light-hearted masterpieces and is known for his Life of the Party RPG-inspired comic. Cole Munro-Chitty is a graphic designer/artist who is an absolute pro at taking ideas for visuals/literature/cards and creating something both beautiful and practical. Both of these guys have been a dream to work with and I feel blessed to have met them.

  46. Fantastic list. We’re just starting the process of looking for an artist. (Or two.) This will be a great resource.

  47. Just wanted to note that Mr Cuddington is David *Forest* and Lina Cossette, so might be better entered under “M” :) They also did much of the art for Unfair, as well as Santorini and Tidal Blades.

  48. One of the game that got me hooked simply by the look of it, is Ashes: Rise of the Phoenixborn. The base game and the first 10 expansions art is by Fernanda Suarez. I’m not really good to describe it but i’m never tired of looking at it. :)

  49. […] 14 February 2019 | No Comments […]

  50. What an excellent list! Can’t help but think there are teasers on this list with regards to upcoming releases, but we’ll just have to wait and see ;) Thanks for sharing!

  51. Here are some more to check out:

    Esad Ribic

    Gabriele Del’otto

    David Mack

    Marshall Arisman

    Rafael Albuqueruque

    Leinil Francis Yu

    Ben Oliver

Now I’m curious to know who you would want to put on a board game “Dream Team” or would that be dependent on the theme of the game?

  52. Thanks for this Jamie! As an established designer from the brand and media sphere about to jump into the world of games this is such a cool and time-saving resource for knowledge, inspiration and collaboration building. You may have just saved me months of research. Your selfless promotion of fellow creatives and generosity towards first-time game designers knows no bounds sir. We salute you! I’d like to take you up your kind offer and post my website if I may in case anyone needs any help with identity work, marketing strategy/material or just plain sweet game graphics – http://www.gavindenman.com

  53. Damien Mammoliti I believe was the head graphic designer of the new Brass board and cards. He’s doing a new game now called nocturion. I love his realistic style of drawing buildings and people at work. It is stunning!
