It’s video day on the blog! Just like earlier this month, I’ve added 3 new short videos about Kickstarter, crowdfunding, and entrepreneurship to my YouTube channel. You can find the previous videos on our website or mixed in with my game design videos on YouTube. This is somewhat a tangential question:
If you were to start from scratch today building a community on the internet, which channel would you start with if you could only choose one? Blog, Youtube, Podcast?
That’s a great question! If I could only choose one of those three, I would stick with the blog. I like the longevity and searchability of the blog, and I just prefer the written format. I’m not a perfectionist, but I process thoughts in writing better than out loud, so the blog gives me the chance to really think about what I want to say before I say it.
Maybe you’ve talked about this before and I’ve missed it, and if so I apologize for the redundancy. Why venture into the Youtube space if you prefer writing for that ability to craft your message?
Well, I wanted an outlet to talk about games on a regular basis. I already write two blogs (Stonemaier and my personal blog), and neither of them are specifically about board games. I also wanted it to be quick and easy. Also, I think it’s good to get face time with people–my blog doesn’t offer that.
Really, I’d like to have ongoing media across blogs, podcasts, and YouTube, as people consume content in different ways. For a while I kind of had that with the Funding the Dream podcast. It’s just that I’ve reached my peek for time that I can spend on this type of content–it takes a lot of time to run Stonemaier Games. So for now I’ve drawn the line there, but I may venture into podcasting in the future (as long as it’s distinctly different from the blogs and the YouTube channel).

Perhaps this is a can of worms, but do you have a sense that certain content fits certain medium better than others?
For instance you seem to prefer written for the crowdfunding advice (blog, book) and video for board game content (youtube). Though I suppose you’re crossing the wires a little bit with these three videos.
Are those arbitrary decisions on your part: you want different content on different channels, but it could have done just as well in podcast format? Or was it a strategic choice to place “My favorite game mechanism(s)” on Youtube because Youtube is inherently better for that kind of content?
Hmm, that’s interesting. I think video is good for face time and for showing things to people. Blogs are good for diving deep on a specific topic–it’s easy for people to consumer blogs at their own pace, on their own time, and deep into the future (that’s their searchability). I think podcasts work really well when there are multiple people involved–it’s a nice format for quick-fire interaction.
