The standalone sequel to Scythe sends players on a new adventure into Siberia, where a massive meteorite crashed near the Tunguska River, awakening ancient corruption. An expedition led by Dr. Tarkovsky ventures into the taiga to learn about the meteorite and its impact on the land. Itching for adventure, heroes from the war privately fund their own expeditions to Siberia, hoping to find artifacts, overcome challenges, and ultimately achieve glory.

Expeditions is a competitive, card-driven, engine-building game of exploration. It is designed to evoke similar feelings to Scythe even though the mechanisms are different: Play cards to gain power, guile, and unique worker abilities; move your mech to mysterious locations and gain cards found among the tiles; use workers, items, meteorites, and quests to enhance your mech; and use power and guile to vanquish corruption.

  1. I’ve been following the progress chart for the Expeditions expansion, and it appears the next step is preorder fulfillment. Did I miss an opportunity to preorder the expansion? I love this game, and can’t wait to see the new content!

      1. This isn’t an April fools thing though, right? Lol. I get nervous on Apr 1st.

I got to play for the first time last night and really enjoyed it.

        1. The Expeditions expansion? No, it’s real–there’s even a little information about it in the latest Expeditions newsletter, which is linked on the above page. Thanks for playing!

  2. So, I love this game, but I just had a couple of questions for you. Concerning the two mechs Marsh Strider and Tatanka. After much discussion with friends and after a bunch of plays it seems as though both of these mechs have balance issues. If all players are top shelf gamers then Tatanka seems to be overly strong and Marsh Strider seems to be overly weak. If all players are equally good then Tatanka will win 80% of the time because all they have to do is meld five times and they’re (almost) guaranteed 45 points from just melds. This also frees them up from having to worry too much about other things because of melding being so powerful for them. Almost everyone I’ve taught the game to sees this melding strategy right off the bat. In regards to Marsh Strider the ability to move one more space seems very weak when compared to the other powers. Marsh Strider’s value seems to only be at it’s peak when playing a 5-player game. Sense I feel that these powers are unbalanced I may start playing with a couple of house rules. I think Marsh Strider should not only be allowed to have 4 movement but should also be allowed to move through undiscovered hexes. I also think that I will require Tatanka to pay one green (guile) or one orange (strength) each time they meld.
Do you think these two might be unbalanced as I have discovered?
If so, what do you think of my solutions?
Have you thought about balancing them more as part of the new expansion?
I’d be curious to see what Jamie thinks about these things.
    Thanks again,

    A true fan,
    John

    1. Thanks for sharing your perspective, John! The expansion has already completed production, and based on the data we had (and have), we haven’t detected any significant differences in win percentages for any particular mechs, so there are no revisions to the mechs in the expansion. Marsh Strider is good at completing quests and just gives you greater overall flexibility in terms of available Gather actions. Of course, if you’re not having fun with it, you’re welcome to try a house rule to see how it goes!

      1. Thank you so much for responding to me. You are one of my favorite designers and I love your “My favorite Mechanism” videos. It is good to know your data hasn’t found any significant differences in win percentages. To be honest a lot of this feedback comes from a friend of mine, so I will pass that on to him. I should tell you that I have only actually played about 8 times which in a world of constant new games (seems like a lot for me). But is probably nothing close to the hundreds of plays you and your team have had. Thanks again for responding. I’m looking very forward to the expansion. And thanks for the insight on Marsh Strider.

  3. Question: I’ve a melded meteorite, but none in hand my I use a meld action to get the benefits from the melded meteorite? Or do I need to have a meteorite to meld to gain benefits?

    1. To gain a Meld benefit, you must have a meteorite card in your hand or active row, and you must tuck that meteorite card under your mech mat.

  4. Great game, thanks!
During one match i’ve found a gamebreaking combo:
Tarkovsky’s lair (can be replaced by some cards) -> “banish the squatters” (BAS) card adjacent to lair -> ” lure and confront the cave monsters” (LACTCM) card in hand. Gather in lair activates bas ability “activate the Solve benefit of another quest you control”, which is 1 gold coin and activation of adjacent cards ability for LACTCM. And this adjacent card is BAS, which activates LACTCM Solve benefit, … And we have a goldmining loop, which never stops. What should i do in this situation?

    1. Text on this card is. Whenever you refresh Gain a power or Guile per refreshed worker.
It has a rescue ability when worker placed.

      1. I appreciate the text! This is an ongoing power that’s active as long as it’s in your active row with a worker on it (or if it’s upgraded). It’ll activate whenever you refresh (before you refresh the card)–it basically makes your Refresh turns much better.

  5. Quick Question, after clearing corruption in Northen Tiles, when doing Gather action, do You get both benefits or choose one? since there is no ”OR” symbol, and rules don’t explain this clearly.

  6. Hi Jamey!

I quite love and enjoy the game. I read you have a data analyst to review playtest data and detect potential overpowered/underpowered factions and/or combos. As a data geek myself, would it be too much to ask what the win % and avg. score of each faction was during playtesting?

I fully understand if my question is “peaking too far behind the courtain” but I’m genuinely curious!

  7. Hello, I fell in love with the game art I think it’s beautiful. In terms of gameplay it is very simple and engaging. I missed some mechanics and this really opens up to a future expansions:
    – You mentioned that the encounters are the locations, but I would like the encounter to be more thematic maybe, add some random bonus or penalties, trades or so one.
    – We have mechs for god sake, why can’t I battle other mechs :). I only wished we had more player interaction.
    – Personal objectives could be interesting
    – And finally I would like to have some features mentioned above included on the automata for solo mode.
    Thanks for the great game…

  8. Quick question: I watched your live video today 1/17/2024 and you mentioned that the expansion for expeditions will have 2 new mechs. Will we have the option of the iron clad edition of the expansion and the regular? Because I have the ironclad and would want metal mechs for the expansion.

      1. Thank you so much for the response. I have one more and I promise I’ll leave you alone lol. Do you have an idea of when the preorder will be?

        1. I have a rough idea, but it depends on too many uncertain factors for me to announce yet. When those factors are resolved, I’ll announce it in our enewsletter and the Scythe/Expeditions newsletter, which you can sign up for here: http://eepurl.com/iidvQX

  9. Hi Jamey, my play group has noticed that the first player (and sometimes the second player) generally has an advantage over the following players. Is there a recommended “handicap” for players that follow the first player at the beginning of the game? We have been thinking about giving the following players some money to start with but we haven’t tested it out yet. Thanks!

    1. Thanks for playing Expeditions! Here’s a detailed answer from the FAQ (https://stonemaiergames.com/games/expeditions/rules-faq/):

Is there a disadvantage to going last in Expeditions, especially at 4 or 5 players?

We didn’t find that to be the case in playtesting. By going last, you often have more information than the previous players if any of them explore central locations. Or if players haven’t explored, then they’ve give you a head start on gathering explore tokens and powerful benefits in the central region. Just because some locations may be blocked in the south doesn’t make the remaining benefits any less valuable.

Early in the game, some players rush forward to claim one of limited explore tokens on the face-down locations and reveal new locations with powerful benefits (including the first appearance of purple workers, which don’t appear in the south). Other players gather cards that look exciting to them (sometimes there are quest cards for southern locations, making them easy to solve early in the game). And some players may pick up a worker on their first turn: There are two locations in the south that generate workers and a third location that generates a gather benefit from an adjacent location.

Later in the game, each player will have taken 20+ turns. At that point, it isn’t important who took the first turn of the game; rather, it’s what you’ve done with the 20+ turns you’ve had and how successful you’ve been at achieving glory. At that point, the focus shifts to incentivizing players to finish the game so it doesn’t overstay its welcome. That’s why the player who triggers the end of the game by placing their 4th star will earn the final turn of the game (after each other player takes their final turn).

I’ve seen from online discussions about the game that there’s a bit of groupthink happening in regards to getting a worker on your first turn (stemming from frustrations in 4- and 5-player games where a few players don’t get a worker on their first turn). Workers are indeed important for activating abilities, but they are far from the only strategic path to take in Expeditions, even early in the game. Cards, exploration, guile, and power are all key resources to pursue.

Even though player order should not impact your ability to pursue a strong, winning strategy in Expeditions, perception is important too, and I hear these frustrations. The expansion (in development now) implements a new element to address early worker scarcity frustration.

      1. Thanks! I would have thought so since it never says you can’t in the rules but wanted to double check. Great game by the way;)

  10. I’m conflicted with this game, because the art is stunningly beautiful and I love the modular board. It’s just so. damn. complicated. Much more than Scythe, and that was tough to get good at. I stopped playing this game because it caused so much tension trying to figure it out.

    1. I watched a solo playthrough on youtube using the Automa and it made a lot more sense after that. Next time I played on my own and had to reference the rules a few times but it was much easier after doing that. Now strategy on the other hand – thats just practice and adapting to what comes up card wise.

  11. Hello Jamey, is there any possibility of uploading the Expeditions regulations (rules) in Spanish to the dropbox? I couldn’t find it on the damn games website (generally they don’t upload these types of documents).

    1. We only have the English components for our games–that would need to be something Maldito provides.

  12. Hi Jamey,
I was very excited to see i the newsletter today that the expansion to expeditions is scheduled for sometime this year; I look forward to seeing what it has to offer! My hope is that we see a deck of encounter cards. we played a lot of scythe and took the rule to show the beautiful card art adn describe the scene ot the other players very seriously. They really did a lot to make the world feel lived in :)

  13. Hi Jamey and Stonemaier Games,

I purchased the Iron Clad Edition and we’ve been enjoying the game very much thank you. However one little issue is the mech base snaps (the coloured bases for the mechs) they do not stay ‘snapped’ to the mechs and can even cause the mechs to topple when they slip off. Is there a known defect with some of them and if so was there an updated mech base?

P.S. Can’t wait to see the expansion ;)

    Thank you,

  14. Hello Jamey/Stonemaier Team!

Do you have an estimate on when the Scythe/Expeditions metal coins will be back in stock?

    Thank you!

    1. Thanks Jenny! The Expeditions versions of the coins should be back in stock in 6 months (we’re currently focusing on selling through the nearly identical Scythe metal coins)

  15. Not sure if it is already adressed but adding the automa to a 2 player game??
We love the game! But most of the time we are only with two or solo..

    1. Thanks for playing! I didn’t design any multiplayer version of Expeditions with Automa in mind, but you’re welcome to try it to see if you like it that way. :)

    1. Thanks for your question! I’m not entirely sure that we will reprint it; it might be more likely that we just make the metal mechs for those who want to add them to their standard version.

      1. This would be great! I bought the standard version of Expeditions not realizing how much I would enjoy it. I regret not springing for the Iron Clad edition with the metal mechs and would love to have the option to buy them separately in the future. Do you think this could happen before the release of the next expansion? It might feel a little strange if I were to buy the iron clad edition of the expansion with the new mechs while the original 5 mechs are still the plastic from the standard edition. Thank you in advance :)

        1. Austin: We’re making metal mechs at the same time as the expansion, so they’ll be available at the same time. :)

  16. I’m not sure about the little coin value at the bottom right of cards. ie: Hover Coil for example: the ongoing benefit reads “Whenever you move through an opponent’s location, that player gains guile and you gain $1” then there’s a coin symbol with a ‘3’. What does that coin symbol mean?

  17. Hello,
One question from France after several games.
We found that the meteorites were very strong maybe too strong ?! And we had one idea to fight this is to add ine star for objectives without changing the end of the game but it will help the finisher to have more points with stars, and no meteorites.
Have you ever heard someone else saying that ?
I hope you understand my « english ».
    Thank you for your response.
    Best regards
    .
PS: we really this amazing game.

    1. Thanks for sharing your perspective, Thierry! The meteorites–and melding them–are indeed powerful, though I haven’t heard a widespread sentiment that they are always overpowered, as each of them is designed with a condition that makes it only situationally good.

  18. Hi – Just wondering – are there spoilers for Rise of Fenris by playing Expeditions? I have both (unplayed as yet) and want to start on Expeditions

    1. There are a few subtle references to the Rise of Fenris in Expeditions, but they aren’t overtly called out.

  19. How come I have to login to WordPress so unsubscribe to the comments on here? That process runs counter to Spam laws in Canada governing unsubscribing from things. I shouldn’t have to login to a website that isn’t the one I am unsubscribing from or create a new login to do so.

    1. I agree, but I’m also not sure it’s true that you need to login to WordPress to unsubscribe to a comments thread that you chose to follow. I’ll check with our web dev about the accuracy of this claim.

    2. JP: We tested out the unsubscribe process, and it was straightforward (though I’m sorry it was frustrating for you). If you’d like to share your feedback with WordPress, you’re welcome to do so–this is not a system or setting we control.

      1. So here is what happens for me. I click ‘unsubscribe’ in the email. It takes me to the wordpress site where I have to enter my email to be sent a link to ‘manage my subscriptions’. I click the link which is emailed to me and I have to login to wordpress which I don’t have a login for. This is the opposite of unsubscribing with one click and is practically one of the examples given for a non-compliant unsubscribe process. Also note that I chose NOT to have replies emailed to me on the above comment but they were still emailed to me.

        1. I think WordPress is asking people to have a very basic login (just your email, maybe not even a password) to manage these types of comment subscriptions on a variety of blogs. I agree that it’s more cumbersome than one-click unsubscribing, but this is how WordPress works–this is a WordPress issue, not something specific to Stonemaier Games.

        2. OK, so just so you know I thought I would login to wordpress too to check if I could actually unsubscribe. Once logged in there is no option to stop receiving emails from anywhere. So, yeah. This didn’t work at all for me. Not sure if I’m just missing something? I followed the (lengthy) process and was still not able to unsub in the end. Once logged in to the wordpress site when I click “unsubscribe” in an email it goes straight to the logged in wordpress site but still no options to unsub anything.

Is this the same process your web dev experienced too? If not what is supposed to happen?

          1. In the spirit of not dominating the discussion on a page unrelated to this IT topic, I will contact you by email to further discuss it.

  20. I’d like to purchase Ironclad edition for my brother for Christmas. Will Ironclad Edition be back in stock soon?

  21. Hi Jamie.
I bought the Ironclad Edition, and is experiencing a issue.
The Base rings doesn’t fit well on the mechs.
Based on the look it feels like the rings are made for the plastic mechs, but that is just a guess.
    Any thoughts?
    Best regards
    René Drongstrup

    1. Rene: Thanks for your question. The plastic mechs have a different set of plastic rings; the silicone rings were made specifically for the metal mechs. Here’s a note about it in the FAQ:

The silicone base snaps don’t fit properly in my copy of the Ironclad Edition. Is that normal?

It seems to be a fairly common issue. The issue has more to do with the inconsistent size of the metal mech base. Due to the polishing, the bases are of a slightly different size as the size tolerances is difficult to control. The good news is that the silicone base snaps should become more flexible and fit better the more they’re used (you can even stretch them out by hand if they’re a little too small); double-sided tape is also a temporary solution if the bases are too big.

  22. The silicon bases for the metal mechs are not getting better… they are in fact getting worse. I almost wish I had not got the Ironclad edition, just to have the plastic mechs with better bases. Are you really not going to do something to fix these bases?

  23. Having played this, it is a fun game. I love the detail and look of the iron mechs. Gameplay is fluid. The aesthetic is great.

If I had one comment of note, there was obviously careful design that went into the insert of this, yet using the little token tray (housed underneath the player boards) is a hassle, since the tokens don’t actually stay in the tray while transporting the game anywhere. The same thing happened with the Red Rising deluxe edition (that one, I had all the individual player pieces put in small bags before placing them in their space in the tray. Otherwise, those pieces would keep falling out into the holder section).

You make great games, I would just love to see a little more attention paid to aspects of these inserts to insure that the token tray sections actually held those tokens in place, for transport. Beyond that, the space for the mechs and even the board tiles, all of that is great and exactly as it should be.

    1. I appreciate your feedback, Jon. I can assure you that every bit of my attention was paid to every aspect of the insert, especially after learning from Red Rising.

My experience is different than yours with Expeditions. By placing the mech mats on top of the resource tray (and then the lid on top of them), everything stays in place. We did need to leave a little room for 2 expansion mech mats, so there’s a little wiggle room, but you can put something under the tray to remove that wiggle room.

  24. I’m playing the game with my friends for the first time tonight! I feel prepared and ready to teach (I watched the how to teach video), but I have some questions about the lore.
So I think I understand the many faces of corruption and how to deal with them (curing parasites, calming creatures, fighting zombies) but I was wondering what happens when you recruit a possessed (purple worker). Are you chaining a mindless zombie? Negotiating with an alien intelligence? Hiring the services of a local warlock? I feel like the card abilities that are activated imply the warlock scenario more than the others but I was wondering if there was a cannon response.
Also, can’t wait to read the character pages for Mathew and Vesna. Mathew seems closest to the stalker archetype, especially with his friendship with Tarkovsky (like in roadside picnic).
Finally, I made a Tidal playlist for the game. It has 20 tracks, one for each location, but without a 1-to-1 correlation. It starts out ambient and calm in the south and gets progressively weirder and more aggressive as you move north.

    https://tidal.com/playlist/db3db22b-cb4b-4f91-ae3f-202770f0ea1f

    Thanks!

    1. Thanks for your question, and I love that you created a playlist for Expeditions!

The possessed workers are kind of a twisted version of themselves. They’re still people (often with tentacles), but they find themselves drawn to meteorites. Recruiting a possessed worker is a combination of you overcoming your fear of someone different, appeasing them, and giving them a sense of purpose. Tarkovsky has taken this to a new level by tapping into greater power and calling the possessed to him, which they find difficult to resist.

  25. Hello from France,
What about the two circles unusued for mechas in the box ?
Will ther be an expansion ?
    Thanks !

    1. There will indeed be an expansion, and the one element of the expansion I’ve revealed is that it will include 2 new mechs–that’s what the additional slots in the insert are for. :)

        1. Ironclad in English, yes! As for French answers, they’re for Matagot to provide when they’re ready. :)

  26. Will the Scythe silicon mini bases fit on the plastic Expeditions minis? I painted my minis (the MUST be painted) and there is real potential for the paint to be scraped off the edges by the hard plastic bases.

    1. I can’t guarantee it, as they weren’t designed for that purpose, but the silicon is pretty flexible.

      1. Having never compared the base sizes between the metal and the plastic ones can you say that the metal ones are generally bigger?

  27. Just played it for the first time last night. Thought it was great but do have a few comments:

    1. The power/guile tokens do not fit well within a row on the track. There is space on the mech mat to make this track larger, or the tokens could be smaller.

    2. I have a reasonably sized table and we found it to be a bit cramped. I think the tiles themselves could have been a bit smaller while maintaining the void for the cards.

    3. I also got the rubber play mat. Again, cramped layout given the need for having all your cards laid out on either side of the mech mat. Ended up having most cards not on the mat which sort of defeats the purpose of the mat.

    4. The base camp tile is already double sided. It would have been nice if one side was inverted to allow setup in a different orientation given most of the space on the rubber mat is on the opposite side from the base camp.

    5. Known issue but disappointed the silicon snaps don’t fit the metal mechs.

    1. Thanks for your feedback, Nicholas! I think the key function of the player areas on the playmat is that you can specifically fit the mech mat it, making for easier tucking. As for the tiles, they are as small as they could possibly be to fit sleeved cards between them (a requirement for many people). I agree that the power/guile tokens could be a bit smaller, though I haven’t found myself needing them to fit exactly side by side. Also, for the silicon base snaps, they should fit better over time. They stretch well. :)

  28. Hi Jamey!

Just purchased the French version from Matagot, and wanted to know if it is possible to get the metal mechs and coins from you

    Thanks!

      1. And is it (or will it be) possible to buy a set of the metal mechs? I would like to replace the plastic ones I got in the Matagot version of the game.

        Thanks!

        1. Currently we don’t have sets of only metal mechs, but it’s something we’ll likely offer on our webstore if we hit pause on making the Ironclad Edition in the future.

  29. I really want this game to be released in Kazakhstan. After stopping cooperation with Russia, we are no longer able to play Stonemaiergames

    1. Thanks! Expeditions actually hasn’t had its retail release anywhere yet–that’ll be on September 22, when retailers around the world can order from distributors (like Asmodee Europe for your area).

    1. Yes, as noted on the above page: “Localization Partners: There are 7 localization partners for Expeditions, including Matagot (France), Ghenos Games (Italy), and Feuerland (Germany). These partners will announce their participation at their discretion.”

  30. Got this game in July. I believe I have played it with my Teens at my Boys & Girls Club about 30+ times over the summer. We can not wait to see what is in store for expansions and the lore. This game might feature Jakub’s best art to date as well. Just want to say thank you for an awesome game.

  31. We have hit our 20th play of Expeditions and my circle loves it.
I am curious, though, there is no combat, yet the visuals all declare “We are armed and ready!”
Is this what I will call an uneasy détente? Having come out of war, everyone is on edge but no one wants to be the first to relight the fires?

    1. Thanks for playing so much already! You’ve been fighting corruption with power (and guile) for 20 games now–that’s why the mechs are armed and ready. :)

  32. Hi! I’m curious about the pricing of expeditions. The box is much bigger than it’d have to be for the components, and as far as the components go there really aren’t that many. This game has an MSRP of $85 when scythe is only $80 even though it has a much larger number of components, and double layered mats and such. What caused the higher production cost of expeditions, and how did it become more than scythe? Was it the extra art? Is the price just set higher due to inflation?

This isn’t a complaint about the price by any means, I bought the heck out of this game, between my ironclad edition, special play mat, metal coins, and rolling realms pro-mo. I’m super exited to receive those. I’m just curious what made you price expeditions the way you did.

    1. I do see now that the scythe MSRP is $99 which is higher than I thought, but I still don’t feel like expeditions would have a higher component cost than games like wingspan, viticulture EE, Charterstone, etc.

      1. Hello! I recently signed up as a Stonemaier Champion and pre-ordered a copy of Expeditions (IC Edition), and I noticed that the 2nd wave pre-order fulfillment and retail release are scheduled for September 22nd. Does that time frame also apply for SM pre-orders?

          1. Sounds great, and thank you for the prompt response! I’m really looking forward to playing this in the coming weeks.

    2. The components in Expeditions costs more to make than Viticulture and less to make than Scythe; MSRP is based on manufacturing costs.

The components (and organizing them in an insert to protect and organize those components to facilitate setup and cleanup) in Expeditions necessitated this box size. This is the smallest size that could work–I originally tried a smaller box, and it did not work.

  33. Hi Jamey! Quick rules question: If someone takes a move action and uses a move ability from a card on the same turn, thus moving twice, can they return to the same hex where they started their turn? Example: My brother wants to block me from location 20, but he starts his turn there and has to move. On a turn where he can move and play, he moves away from location 20, then plays recon drone, card 020, with an instant ability “move” and ongoing ability “Whenever you move, you may first either peek at a location within range or gain one power.” Would it be legal for my brother to return to location 20, or does he need to end his turn on a different tile?

    Thanks.

    1. Great question. Within each Move, you must end up on a different location than where you started the Move. But it doesn’t require you to end your turn on that location, so you could feasibly use another Move benefit (like what you described) to end up right back on the same location.

      1. Thanks Jamey! Fortunately my brother showed mercy, left location 20 open, and pursued a slightly different strategy on his turn. :)

  34. Since I was inquiring using Google Translate, I was worried that the wording was correct, so I corrected the wording again.

It may be rude to write here, but please let me know here because I have doubts about the response.
I ordered Expeditions here. I inquired about it by email. After receiving the inquiry, how would you respond as if you hadn’t seen the inquiry and shipped it? Since I am working on shipping, I think that I am also looking at the inquiry mail.
A few days after ordering, the release of the native language version was announced, so I asked if it was possible to cancel. This site states that unopened shrink-wrapped items can be returned. If so, is it possible to cancel this time?

    1. If your order hasn’t shipped, we can cancel and refund it. If your order has shipped, after you receive it, you can send it back to use if you haven’t opened the shrinkwrap.

        1. Joe and Dave should respond to all emails within 24 hours. I’ve also sent them a note to bring it to their attention. You will hear back from them today.

  35. A little question about Expeditions.
Why isn’t the player color, red, blue, yellow, and white, unified?
Although it is almost black, only the worker piece is purple. why?

    1. It’s because the player colors in Expeditions echo the player colors in Scythe. The player colors in Expeditions have no connection to the worker colors.

        1. That’s correct. Is there somewhere in the rulebook that made you think otherwise? If so, I’d like to clarify it.

  36. Hi – I got the game from pre-order, and when going through the rules, I didn’t expect much and actually thought I was going to sell it after some plays. But then I played it yesterday with 3 friends, and throughout the game, the excitement growed. It really got more and more interesting and we all focused a lot to be the first one to get the 4 stars. Everyone was a bit blown away after, and wanted to play again. Now I see and are sure this is becoming one of my favorite games already. I have 150+ games and Scythe has been my #1 for min. 4 years. But Expeditions is also a great game, thanks.

  37. The new version of the 80 metal coins is currently out of stock. Will it be back in stock in the future? Thanks!

    1. It will! :) Please sign up for a back-in-stock notification so we can let you know when it arrives.

  38. A month or two ago I came across Rodney teaching how to play Expeditions on yt, and before he’d finished, I came here and pre-ordered it. My copy arrived earlier this week and I’ve played a couple times with different parts of my gaming group. Most recent was notable because we weren’t trying to win. We kept going without attempting to boast for stars because we just wanted to see more, do more, maximize the cards and engines we’d acquired. In the end, we did finish, with point totals of 106 and 108. Great time, and will make it back for more players. Thanks!

    1. I’m that kind of player too, Evan—I’m glad you had a good first experience with Expeditions!

  39. Hey Jamey. My wife and I where playing Tapestry the other night and I got the tapestry card that lets you copy another player’s tapestry card. Which I thought would be a great card for future expansion of Expeditions. One that would let you copy the ability of another player’s mech. You could only use it once and then trash it. Maybe it could be called “ Osmosis Meteorite.” Anyway, absolutely love this game. You and your team hit another home run!!!!!

  40. I just received the champions update and there is an upcoming pre-order opportunity for a some surprises coming. There are times, but no dates. Is it safe to assume the date will be tomorrow (8/2/23)?

  41. Hi Jamey!

I’m very excited to play expeditions but I got a couple of copies of the ironclad edition for some friends and in the end it seems like one was missing, I sent an email to contact@stonemaiergames.com but I don’t really know if I’m getting another parcel or something.

    1. Thanks for your order! You emailed the right place, and you should hear back from Joe or Dave about your order very soon.

  42. Hi Jamey, greetings from Spain!

First of all, congratulations on the launch of Expeditions. My friends and I are big fans of Scythe and we were looking forward to this game. It’s amazing. We love it and we’ve really enjoyed playing it so far :-)

As we are Spanish speakers, we were discussing the context of the resource named “guile” and how to choose a correct translation.

“Guile” has mainly two translations in Spanish: “engaño” and “astucia”. We think “astucia” fits best, as is a synonym also for “cleverness” or “astuteness” (kind of a positive connotation). On the other side, “engaño” is also translated to “guile” but something more like the ability to “deceive”, “fraud” or “betray” (a negative connotation, but this could be the point as well).

What do you think? Which word(s) would you choose as synonym(s) for guile within the game?

    1. Great question! I’m referring to “cleverness” for guile. Guile/power are the equivalent of solving a problem with brains/brawns.

  43. Played a game and had a question about quest resolution. I solved a quest and it’s rewards were to activate a benefit on an adjacent hex. This was the 4th quest I solved. The benefit on the adjacent hex I wanted to activate was a boast. Would I be able to boast 4x solved quests? In other words, when is a quest considered solved for the purposes of boasting, after I’ve paid the cost while collecting rewards or after I’ve collected all rewards?

    1. Kyle: Yes, you can boast about a 4th solved quest in that situation. A quest is solved after you pay the cost.

  44. I love this game, it’s a great predecessor for my favorite game of all time which is of course Scythe! I do have one major gripe though. The bases for the ironclad edition mechs are not good at all. I love the idea but they do not fit right and the mechs are constantly getting squeezed out of them. I know I’m not the only one complaining about this, are there any plans to fix it?

    1. Thanks Jason! Here’s a note about the fancy silicone base snaps from the FAQ:

The silicone base snaps don’t fit properly in my copy of the Ironclad Edition. Is that normal?

It seems to be a fairly common issue. The issue has more to do with the inconsistent size of the metal mech base. Due to the polishing, the bases are of a slightly different size as the size tolerances is difficult to control. The good news is that the silicone base snaps should become more flexible and fit better the more they’re used (you can even stretch them out by hand if they’re a little too small); double-sided tape is also a temporary solution if the bases are too big. You can share data about your silicone bases on this short survey: https://forms.gle/wFhvt1oKJWHzcAYv5

      1. Oh nice, thanks Jamey. Sorry I will check the FAQ first next time. I’m sure it will be played plenty to stretch them out.

  45. In 3+ player games when all the meeble spots are taken by players 1-3 the 4th and 5th player have not been able to grab a meeble to use the powers of a card on the play ability till the first 3 players move off the spot meeble spot and that has not happen a few times till the first reset. Gaining cards is great but when in the 4th and 5th player position feels like the first round 4th and 5th player get a have turn and if they not first player to 4th star they get 1 less turn then the players that go before them. Just the thoughts I have had when I played 4th and 5th player makes the game frustrating for going last.

    1. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Here’s the note in the FAQ about player scaling, which can hopefully illuminate the bigger picture:

Is there a disadvantage to going last in Expeditions, especially at 4 or 5 players? Is there any player scaling?

My design philosophy is that a game doesn’t need to feel the same at every player count; in fact, I think it’s more thematic if the game does feel different. If you’re cooking dinner in a small kitchen, the experience is different if one other person is there versus four other people, right? The kitchen doesn’t magically scale in size based on the number of cooks. The same goes for Expeditions: It is designed and playtested to but functional and fun from 1-5 players, and it’s by design that it feels slightly different at each player count. Plus, you never need to refer to the rulebook to see how the setup or rules are different based on the number of players.

  46. Hey Jamey!
not sure if i’m the only one that’s noticed.. but have you seen that 5x 1$ coins are printed backwards? not exactly game breaking, but worth letting you know for future prints :)

  47. Maybe this has been asked, I just dont see it, why are the colors not match up in count with the meeple colors? I have white and black stars and cubes but no white or black meeples. Would it not have made sense to have everything match or am I missing something?

    1. You are missing something, but that’s okay! I’m happy to help. When you dig into the rules, you’ll see that there’s absolutely no connection between player colors and meeples. Any player can gain any color of worker, as the workers are used to activate different color-specific abilities on the cards you gain during the game. You can even see this on your starting cards, each of which has a different meeple color on them. Check out the rules, a rules video, or the Dized tutorial, and it will make sense right away. :)

      1. Thanks Jamey, I was in complete Scythe mode where the meeples and other parts are all the same color. I was just doing an unboxing and that is the first thing I saw!
The Metal Mechs are amazing, by the way, I have Metal Gods by Judas Priest stuck in my head now after seeing them!

  48. Is there a type on Hex 16? I thought it was odd that all of the other North tiles have 8+ corruption while Hex 16 is only 5+ corruption.

    1. Here’s the note in the FAQ about this tile:

Why does location 16 only need a value of 5+ corruption when all other northern locations require 8+?

This is a mistake, but perhaps a fortuitous one. Officially, play as the tile is printed. Unofficially, you may choose to play with this tile as intended (8+ corruption value)–you could even change the 5 to an 8 with a fine-point marker. Or not–there’s no rule in the game saying that all northern locations need to have the 8+ value. We may use this as an opportunity to offer new expansion tiles in the north with more variation in corruption values; similarly, we may include an 8+ version of this tile in an expansion. When we play Expeditions, we will use the printed value as the official value.

  49. On the card “Cullstone” it reads on the meld ability “Gain $1 per 5-value corruption (max $3). Is that in total in play? Or just on my mech mat?

  50. I really wish Stonemaier would indent/die cut there player mats for the wooden pieces.

This would have have great for Wingspan mats too.

It would help keep those action cubes in the one spot :)

    1. I hear you! Here are our thoughts about this in the FAQ:

Why aren’t there dual-layered mech mats?

Dual-layered mats are great in games where the mats hold dozens of tokens that, if upended, could cause chaos and frustration. That isn’t the case in Expeditions, which only has 3 tokens on the mat; as a result, the mats are not dual-layered. It would have significantly increased the price of the game, the boards wouldn’t have fit well in the box without making it taller (further increasing the cost), and–most importantly–the added utility is actually quite small. Being able to slide the power, guile, and action tokens is easier than having them locked into place, and it isn’t difficult to slide cards under the mat (plus, because of the pressure of the mat, they stay in place).

Instead, as an option included in the game, Expeditions comes with 4 riser stickers per mech mat. These lift the mats above your playing surface enough to slide cards under the mat without the need to pick up any portion of the mat and risk tokens sliding around.

If Expeditions gets an expansion, it will likely include 2 new mechs (and 2 new mech mats). 7 single-layered mats with riser stickers will fit into the insert; 7 dual-layered mats with stickers will not. For that reasons–and the reasons stated above–Expeditions will not have dual-layered mats.

  51. Hey Jamey, I’d like a clarification. When you have the gain 1 benefit from an adjacent location option and an adjacent location happens to have the double guile icon, can you use that gain 1 benefit to gain the two guile? Our group reads this as there are two benefits on the tile: one is the “double guile” and the other is “upgrade item”

    1. Here’s how we say it on page 9 of the rulebook: “Gain only one of the benefits (i.e., one of its icons) at that location, regardless of whether it has a “/” symbol.”

One of the benefits = one of the icons. So for the purposes of this Gather benefit, you would gain 1 guile.

  52. Hey Jamey
If I am on a space and use Olga’s companion Changa, to gain the benefit of an adjacent location, if I choose tile 1 that allows me to gain the benefit of an adjacent location, where do I figure adjacency from? Is adjacency always figured from where your mech is or from where the location the benefit is, such as tile 1? Would this allow me gain the benefit from 2 spaces away?
    Thanks!

      1. Good point to clarify. I’ve already played it the other way, so that the benefit becomes transitive. It was a deliberate tactic at one point to gain a benefit two hexes away when only Play was available. Avoided a wasted turn.

  53. My game has not shipped yet, and I am hoping the cruel hand of irony does not cause me consternation and the looming UPS strike delays my game. I may have to undertake an Expedition and rescue it from Striking clutches

  54. I have a question about the ☆ symbol
Gain 1 benefit from an adjacent location !
What does that exactly mean for example on the RESSARCH BASE LOCATION ? Will I gain 1 or 2 Guile from this location ?

    1. I assume it’s one guile, as it notes “one icon” and not “one benefit” or “one effect”.

  55. Hi Jamey,

I asked this question on BGG, but I think it’s fallen through the cracks.

If I have card 19 (‘Once per turn, if you solve, either gain its core value or activate its ability’.) upgraded and tucked under the right side of my mech mat, when do I/ can I activate the ongoing ability?

    1. Before I have paid to solve the quest.
    2. After I’ve paid to solve the quest, but before I gain the benefit below the cost.
    3. After I have claimed the benefit below the cost.
    4. One time in either 1, 2 or 3 (I edited this point from the original post for clarity).

    Thanks :)

    1. Sorry I missed this on BGG! I thought I saw it addressed there, but perhaps it was another thread. This ability activates after you’ve solved (after step 2, and one time either before or after step 3, your choice).

  56. I just received and opened (haven’t played yet) my Ironclad Edition. Everything looks fantastic. One curious question. Why do we have red, blue, white, yellow and black base caps, glory tokens and action cubes, but we have red, blue, green, purple and yellow workers?

    1. Thanks Aaron! The player colors and worker colors have absolutely no connection to each other. In Expeditions, you can add any types of workers to your crew.

  57. Will I receive a shipping notice before the game is shipped? I have still not received a shipping notice. Thanks!

  58. My copy arrived today. It’s looking great and I’m very excited to get it to the table. Regarding expansions (I realise it’s probably a bit early to say much of anything, but anyway) are you planning ironclad editions so that all the components match for those of us with the hefty base game?

    1. Thanks Jane! Absolutely, the first expansion will likely include the 2 new mechs the insert is designed to hold, and that expansion will be available in two versions (plastic and metal mechs).

  59. Question, at what point do I become concerned that I have no Expeditions to play?
I thought I read somewhere the end of July? I ask, because my neighbor pre-ordered the same day I did and he got his yesterday.
    Thanks, and anxious to play!

    1. Thanks for preordering Expeditions! Shipping will take all of July, so when it’s no longer July, if you still haven’t received a tracking number, that’s when you can express concern. :)

  60. I have been thoroughly enjoying Expeditions. I have a clarification question regarding the Hack Robot Guardians (086). It’s ability is “Activate the ability of any other active card.” I am assuming that means any player’s active card since it does not say “your” in the ability. Am I correct? Thanks! And congrats on making another GREAT game!

    1. Thanks Randy! All card abilities (unless talking about adjacency) are referring to your cards and components, not opponents. In this case, it’s referring to one of your active cards other than Hack Robot Guardians.

  61. Hi, I could not find this information information anywhere on the website. I did not receive yet any shipment confirmation, so I’m thinking that the fulfilment of my order will take place in September. Is this the case for the European orders? Can I confirm this in anyway? Sorry, I’m just eager to play :-)

    1. Hi Andrea! There’s only one wave of shipments in Europe. I expect preorders to continue shipping throughout the month of July. You’ll receive a tracking email when your order ships by the end of the month. Thanks for your patience!

      1. I must’ve scared the fulfilment gods, because I just received my confirmation email :-) thank you for your answer!

  62. Hi Jamey, Thanks for this great game. I received my ironclad and metal coins last week and have been working through the game with my youngest daughter first and then onto the rest of the family. We haven’t been able to finish a game yet due to time constraints but we are getting there. A few things have left me scratching my head at times and I haven’t been able to answer them from the instruction book but thankfully have found some answers in YouTube play-throughs. Going back to watch your 4-turn video was a great help. Will you be doing a full play-through video as well? I have seen that some of the play-throughs have errors in them such that commenters are providing corrections and this can lead to false assumptions about what to do.

Regarding an upcoming expansion, will any mechanics of the game be changed like in wingspan expansions or will it be the case of more locations and cards and additional mechs?

We love the build quality of this game. The cards are a little thinner than wingspan but the artwork is fantastic and do remind me of the quality of wingspan and red rising.

Thanks for the great games as always Jamey

    1. Thanks Brady! I appreciate your curiosity about future expansions, and I look forward to discussing the first expansion when the time comes. The only part of it I’ve mentioned publicly is that I designed the insert with space to hold 2 more mechs (and mech mats).

The cards are actually the exact same cards stock and finish as Wingspan cards. :)

      1. doh. I should have compared them :) I was sure they felt thinner. Thanks for pointing that out.

Are you able to clear up something for me regarding the action cube and the rules surrounding it? I have seen some contradictions about.

I know that it must be moved on each turn from the previous position.

e.g. say I just moved and gathered, the next turn, I have to either move and play/move and gather, or refresh. Can I have it on play/move even if I do not have a card to play or am I forced to refresh?

        Thanks.

        1. Yes, you can always shift your token between move, play, and gather. If you can perform the exposed actions, you must, but that isn’t a requirement for the shift you choose.

  63. Hi Jamey, upon removing my mechs from the box for the first time, one of the mechanics separated from the base. Can you please share instructions for gluing it back on?

    1. Mark: The metal mechs are each several different pieces that the factory glued together; sometimes the glue doesn’t hold as well as it should. A touch of glue at the connection points and a little time to dry will do the trick; you don’t need any special glue (though if you have some strong glue, it will hold better). Thanks!

  64. We had a lot of fun playing for the first time last night! One rule question we ran into that we begrudgingly settled was with regards to gathering on a tile with the “ACTIVATING AN ADJACENT CARD’S ABILITY” benefit. At the start of the gather action, the other benefit on the tile was covered by corruption. As part of the adjacent card activation, the player cleared the corruption on his own tile, uncovering a boast benefit. Is the player then entitled to gather the boast benefit uncovered benefit on that tile? Or are the other benefits the player gets the ones revealed at the start of the gather regardless of if the corruption covering the other is vanquished?

    1. Thanks for getting Expeditions to the table! When Gathering, you gain any eligible benefits one at a time. So if the first benefit enables you to clear corruption (rare, but possible, as you noted), you can still gain the newly revealed benefit as well.

        1. If there is a slash, you only get to take one of the benefits. So assuming the uncovered benefit allows you to reveal the covered benefit, you can no longer take the covered benefit. You only get one.

  65. Are Champions pre-orders still shipping? I haven’t gotten an email yet for a Feb 1 order (although I did add a set of coins and a signed card). I’m excited to start playing!

    1. They are indeed! All Champions should have a shipping notification by the end of next week. We have lots of preorders to fulfill. :)

  66. Jamey, you’ve done it again!

I just received my Champions preorder yesterday and had my first Automa playthrough just now. It was a bit easy playing vs. level 2, but it was helpful to play that extra-long game to get a feel for the different paths to victory and the opportunity costs of each action. I thought the constant sweeping of cards and two opponent mechs on the board came close to simulating certain hexes being occupied and desired cards being taken by other players. It probably doesn’t quite simulate the strategic and highly sought after positions being occupied, but it’s easy to automate and is much more fun to play against than merely a high score. Cheers to Morten Monrad Pedersen for the solo experience!

Scythe has been my favorite game since I discovered it, but Expeditions could edge it out—I can’t wait to get it to the table with friends! The first things I love about the game are the beautiful art/components and the great attention to detail in the small things. I was punching out the pieces and thought to myself, “But where do all these pieces go?” I looked up and happened upon the side of the inside box which has a diagram giving helpful advice on how to store the game. It’s little things like this that show how much you care about creating a smooth and entertaining experience for your customers. The fact that you pre-planed the box to fit future expansions also speaks to how you care about your fans. I think I much prefer this to later offering expanded boxes, although that you offer that as well for previous published games is also considerate for those completionists—not that it isn’t also a great marketing tool. When I spied those extra mech slots, I knew that I had to fill out this box with any content to come!

Then in the game itself, my favorite moments were several hugely satisfying turns in which combos allowed me to gain many benefits. I think turns in Expeditions have the potential to evoke this great feeling just like a double-row action turn where you gain multiple stars in Scythe. It’s easily the best part of the game for me. Even had I lost the game, I think those moments would stick with me and feel like great accomplishments. Some crowded games of Scythe may never allow for such a huge turn—I just finished a Rise of Fenris campaign last night and in several episodes I didn’t accomplish much at all—but I think the way Expeditions is designed, everyone probably gets at least a few turns that accomplish a lot and feel very rewarding. The engine-building is so versatile and it seemed easy to adjust strategies when desired cards were taken away or hexes were occupied. There’s always something positive you can do to work toward a goal, even if it’s only gaining a guile or power.

I cannot wait to get more plays of this amazing game. Your games inspire me with playful escape into challenging puzzles in extraordinary worlds. You’ve thoroughly succeeded in bringing joy to my tabletop through another memorable, beautiful, and fun game!

    1. Thank you so much, Griffin! I’ve shared your comment with Morten too–he and his team get full credit for the Automa system. I’m just the multiplayer designer. I appreciate you noticing the little touches and details, and it means a lot that you’re looking forward to more plays. :)

  67. I love that you managed to get your cats in the game, wearing the Amulet of Bravado.
Component quality is exceptional, well worth the money. Was kind of hoping for bix 1 of 7500 but ended up with 124 😆
Regarding the map tokens. Why are there so many? Instructions say there are 24 in the box, but there are 30. From what I can see, you only need 14 per game, unless I’ve missed something?

    1. You only need 24 map tokens, but we were able to fit some extras (in case you lose some) on the punchboard.

    2. There are also location gather actions which allow gaining an extra map token, as well as play abilities on cards which acquire extra map tokens.

      1. Thanks Griffin. I also agree with your comment. Such a beautiful well thought out game and design. Not entirely sure where I will put stuff that currently sits in the vacant mech compartments but there’s quite a bit of room in each!

  68. Another great game! It’s quickly replaced scythe as my favorite. I do have one thought/suggestion. Dual layer player mats would be wonderful. The power and guile makers get knocked off so easily. I’ve seen mention the same thing. Do you think an upgraded option would be possible in the future? (Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this)

    1. Here is the question and answer about this in the FAQ:

  69. Hi Jamie. I ordered the Ironclad edition along with the full coin set and then a set of replacement 5 coins for Scythe. Am I right in think these will all ship together? I got my shipping email today so I’m really excited, mainly for those metal mechs! Haha

      1. I actually ordered the replacement 5 coins a few days after my intial order. They are not included in my shipment from Spiral Galaxy but I assume they will arrive eventually.

        1. That’s true, if it’s a separate order, it will ship separately. In the future, if you want to add something to an existing preorder, please email contact@stonemaier.com. It’s easy for us to add things to existing orders so you don’t have to pay for shipping twice.

  70. I purchased a copy of expeditions very early into the preorder cycle but I am not a Champions member. I was wondering if I would be part of the first wave?

    1. Yes, you ordered way back in February (thank you!), so you’re definitely part of the July shipout. We’ll ship Champion orders first, followed by non-Champion orders, all in July.

      1. Thank you for the quick update. That has to be the quickest update I have ever gotten to an online question. I have had active chat conversations that took longer than that. Jamey is just sitting at the PC chomping at the bit to answer fans questions.

Also, how could I not preorder. After the countless hours of enjoyment my friends and family have had with Scythe, I couldn’t wait to preorder for a sequel. I believe at this point I have almost all of Stonemaier games. Lover everyone of them. Gotta keep the collection going.

        1. Happy to help! That’s what we’re here for. :) I hope you enjoy Expeditions, and thank you for collecting and playing our games!

  71. Hi Jamey, there’s a port strike on at the moment in Canada. Might that affect the scheduled skipping from the fulfilment centers?

    1. I’m 99% sure the freight shipment is being delivered today to our fulfillment center in Canada, so Expeditions isn’t impacted (to my knowledge).

      1. Glad to report that just as I was watching your latest video today, I received a delivery notice for Expeditions!

  72. Hello. I have a question about expeditions.
I live in Japan. Do you have any plans to translate the game into Japanese and sell it? . If so, I would appreciate it if you could let me know when.

    1. Thanks for your question! We only publish English-language versions of our games, but feel free to contact Arclight to learn of the Japanese-language plans (or let them know you want it).

  73. Really excited by the announcement that these will start shipping next week in Europe. I ordered mine in February so assume that was the first wave for the ironcald edition, as per your youtube video? How is shipping order worked out, or is it just completely random?

    1. Thanks Peter! All Champion orders in each region will ship first, batched for optimization (i.e., a fulfillment center might ship a bunch of orders that have the same combination of products or are heading to the same country). You’re definitely in the first wave of Ironclad.

      1. My copy arrived today (in Australia). Very impressed with the entire preorder process and, of course, the quality of the components. Thanks very much, Jamey. Looking forward to getting the game to the table!

  74. Hi. When will we get a chance to see the metal mechs or do we just have to wait for our order to arrive? I assume everything is on track for orders to arrive in July? Finally, will the metal coins ship with the game?

    Thanks

    1. Peter: I may not be understanding the first question, as the metal mechs have appeared in several different videos and photos, including the top photo on this page and the Ironclad page: https://stonemaiergames.com/games/expeditions/expeditions-ironclad-edition/. The Man vs Meeple video has them, as does my video about mechs.

The metal coins will ship in the same package as the game.

The schedule remains as it is posted on this page, which includes a fulfillment estimate for mid-July. You can subscribe to updates here: http://eepurl.com/iidvQX

      1. Here’s my answer posted a few minutes ago on the other page where you asked this. :)

“Thanks for your question, Jared. There isn’t a deadline; rather, in the US we sold out of first-wave Ironclad Editions, so any new preorders are for the second wave, which will ship in late August or early September.”

  75. Hi Jamey,
My bachelor party is going to be on July 21. I’m really hoping to play this then! How likely is it to arrive in Pittsburgh before then?

    1. Congratulations on the upcoming wedding! There’s a very good chance that many Champion preorders will have shipped by then.

    1. Meeplesource is handling preorders for Gen Con pickup; all preorders placed on our webstore are for fulfillment.

  76. Any chance of sometime offering a book of Jakub’s Expedition-based art, like the Scythe book?

  77. Hello Jamey !
I know it might difficult for you to be 100% certain, but do you think the pre-order will be delivered in Canada before July 25th? I’m moving that day, so I’m not sure which address I should put…
    thank you

    1. I think there’s a very good chance for that, so I would use your current address and then leave yourself a note on July 18 that if you haven’t received a shipping notification, contact us and we’ll update your address. Thanks!

  78. Hi Jamey,

I am planning on designing a simple 3D printed frame to hold up the Mech Mat in Expeditions for a non-permanent tucking solution.

Is it possible to share the length and width dimensions of the mat (including the thickness of such) and the thickness of the permanent, adhesive risers?

    Thanks!

    1. That sounds really neat! The mech mats are 160x160mm, and they’re 1.5mm thick. The risers are around 0.5mm thick.

      1. Thanks Jamey! Once I have the design finished and printed, I’ll post the Thingiverse link for the STL file here! I hope others can use it if they don’t prefer the adhesive risers solution.

      2. Hello again, Jamey. I have finally finished my riser design. I designed a full frame but that ended up being a more complex/worse solution. I opted for these simple riser feet that can press-fit onto each corner (just like the adhesive ones you provided in the box but not permanent!). Thanks again for providing the dimensions. Just played my first game tonight and had a blast! I can’t wait to dive into the mechanics even more. Well done to you, Jakub, and the team!

    1. Probably not–7 is a lot for any game where you can’t do anything while you’re waiting for someone else to take their turn. It wasn’t something I intended to do for Scythe either.

      1. Probably 6 then :p, we will have to expel the weakest :p
Is there a mode legacy ?
In Scythe: The Rise of Fenris is the best expansion I’ve played,
after 2-3 campaigns, we can use the modules to make each game even more unique :p

        1. I’m honored to hear that about The Rise of Fenris. It’s a campaign expansion, not a legacy expansion (no permanent changes that can’t be undone). For Expeditions it’s possible we’ll explore a campaign expansion someday, though nothing like that is planned yet.

          1. Thank you very much for these answers, I look forward to receiving
            Expeditions: Ironclad Edition.
To finish just a little note in Scythe: The Rise of Fenris, the Rusviet fraction aims for stars without the victory for episodes 1 to 7 and he has a 100% chance of winning the season if he does not miss his last part :).

          2. That’s an interesting theory! I don’t think it’s possible (per some of the twists) to play the same faction throughout the entire campaign if you’re winning.

  79. Trying to add to my order, it does not recognize my email on the SM page Account Login when I click “forgot password” even though I have the email in my inbox and an order# (195274). There is no contact email for support, help?

    1. Thanks James! I see your order under your email. Our contact email is in the confirmation email–you’ll hear from our team today.

    2. Hi James! I’ve re-sent your account invite email, so be sure to check your spam folder if you don’t see it. That email should fix your login issues. And if you have any troubles, never hesitate to respond to your confirmation email or send an email to contact@stonemaier.com.

  80. Hey Jamey!
I’m mad in love with Scythe! Playing it tirelessly for a long time now, with multiple groups, including a group that was RPG exclusive until I presented Scythe for them. I’m also playing the solo mode when the urge to play it hits hard. Love the art, love the mechanics, love the balanced variations you can get with the combinations of the mats and factions. The game is just brilliant! Thank you so much, and congratulations for your work!
My problem is: Now I want to play Expeditions to keep going, and I can’t find a way to preorder from where it would ship to Brazil! And new games tend to take at least a couple years to be released here… Would there be the possibility to buy the game from Stonemaier and get it to me? If not, I will patiently wait for the release here!

    1. Thanks Victory! Have you looked into forwarding services like Shipito? We can ship to services like that in the US.

  81. Hello Jamey/Stonemaier,

I was lucky enough to have an amazing opportunity to play Expeditions a few times last weekend at Geekway! First, this game was absolutely a joy to play. The action control system with refresh was wonderful and felt very fluid, supporting swift gameplay! Obviously we may have interpreted rules incorrectly so I did have question with regard to endgame steps. If I remember correctly, whichever player triggers endgame by placing their fourth glory token begins a final round of action which means that every player including the player who triggered endgame gets 1 more turn. In one of our games the “last player” felt like this created an imbalance for them. (Last player meaning the player seated to the right of the player who had the first turn in the game). Especially because the last player struggled to get worker meeples their first two turns due to going “last” and both South area meeple locations being occupied for the first two rounds of play. Additionally, by chance the “2nd to last player” is the one who triggered endgame thus every player except the “last player” got an equal number of turns, thus it felt like these two things combined to make it seem like going last has you starting at a deficit. Many other games provide at least an equal number of turns/actions to all players regardless to who triggers endgame and/or providing a starting benefit to players who are not first player.

I do have a few other comments, nothing game breaking, just thoughts on things that stood after playing a few games. Is this the best place to leave those comments?

Lastly, once again, this game was fantastic and I was so excited about it that I enjoyed teaching it to multiple different groups to help them get started as I handed the game off to their group at geekway. I spoke with the reps at the Stonemaier booth on Sunday and look forward to reaching out about possible opportunities to support Stonemaier booths in the future.

    1. Thanks Joshua! I appreciate you playing Expeditions and sharing your thoughts. And it’s amazing that you helped other people learn too! :)

There is value in some games offering an even number of turns, but in a game in which each player is taking 20+ turns, there’s a diminishing need for such a rule. If there is an imbalance, it has an incredibly small impact in Expeditions (compared to a game in which you’re taking, say, 6 turns. Also, the non-first players in Expeditions have the advantage of information if the previous players have explored new locations (and if they haven’t, they have the advantage of exploring first and picking up a map token).

  82. Hey Jamey,

Something a little out of the ordinary; I’ll be moving from the Netherlands to Uganda in August. I’ve pre-ordered from the Europe store to the Netherlands. Would switching adresses to a Uganda address work (do you even ship to the African continent?), or should I wait for Christmas when I visit the Netherlands again :)

    Cheers,
    Bas

    1. Thanks Bas! You’ll receive your preorder in July, so there’s no need to switch. :)

        1. Of course! As noted on the above page in the component list: …”a full insert (designed to hold sleeved cards) and easy-setup tray,…”

          1. Thanks Jamey. Not sure how I missed that. I’ve read all whole page few times and went through all the questions to try and find the answer to my question.

  83. Will the second printing of the Ironclad Edition continue the individual numbering from the first printing or start over with a “second printing” indication similar to the Scythe Metal Mechs?

    1. Each printing has its own quantity, so the second wave of the Ironclad Edition is individually numbered with “second printing” on the box instead of “first printing”. I view this as mostly a good thing, as it means that more people will get lower-numbered boxes.

  84. Hi there! I’m a huge fan of Scythe and I’m super excited about Expeditions! I really want to pre-order but it seems there’s no shipping to Europe yet – any thoughts on when/how I could get my own copy?

      1. Oh! Damn I didn’t know there was a separate store for Europe 😅 Thank so much! Really looking forward to playing :)

  85. Jamey,
I’m looking at buying this for solo play exclusively since it is different than anything I have but I’m worried it won’t fit on my desk. I am trying to purchase games that fit on my desk in my den so I don’t have to take up space on the dining room table too much.

My desk is just over 2’ deep and about 5’ wide.

Will this be big enough for solo play or is it going to be too tight to set up the full game?

    1. Thanks for asking, Ian. For solo play (i.e., you only need your mech mat on the table), Expeditions will fit your desk.

        1. Each hex is 130mm point to point and each flat edge is 66mm. You can see in the setup photos that the widest portion of the game is 4 full hexes and 3 flat edges, so that’s a total of 718mm (28 inches). Measuring the other way (flat edge to flat edge, south to north) there are 5 tiles (114mm across each), so that’s 570mm (22 inches). Technically that includes Basecamp, but you can put that board wherever you want.

  86. Hi Jamey, will the rule book have more story/lore than what is currently printed in the rule book that is available online?

    1. The rulebook PDF is exactly the same as the printed rulebook. There is written lore on the first page and in each of the character descriptions, and there is visual lore found throughout the 100+ unique illustrations in the game.

    1. We only publish the game in English, and we’re currently not working with localization partners in Russia.

  87. Hi!

I was looking at preordering this game to play with some of my friends when it came out, but I noticed that the size of the game when laid out is 99×90 cm: my table is 118×78, which might make it a bit difficult to play Expeditions. However, my table has a greater total area, so I was wondering if it might be the case that there would be alternative layout structures which would make the game fit within this footprint?

    Thanks!
    Nora

    1. Thanks for asking about this, Nora. There is the potential for house-ruled layouts for narrower spaces. They wouldn’t work perfectly, as you need to have all 20 tiles on the table and ideally there would be 5 face-up cards among them, but I think the game would still function just fine.

    2. Nora: I should also note that the game takes a lot less space if you’re not playing with the full 5 players.

  88. I’m not on You Tube, so I can’t leave a comment with a video suggestion, but I thought it’d be good to hear and see some examples of player interaction in Expeditions. I know you mention this component in other games’ design discussions and so far it seems like players here are pretty autonomous. Or does the interaction come from card play? Curious to hear your thoughts.

    1. Definitely I talk about this in the FAQ:

“Tension in Expeditions arises from getting to the location you want when you want to gather or complete a quest there (only 1 mech can be on a location at any time,, from getting the face-up card you want, being the first to get map tokens, clearing corruption–particularly the 3-value corruption tokens and the lone 20-value corruption token, and optimizing your strategy so you place 4 glory to trigger the end of game before other players (glory is a significant portion of scoring). There is no combat in Expeditions–the central conflict is against the corruption resulting from the mysterious meteorites.

  89. I’m concerned about the “tucking” of cards underneath the player mat. What has been the player test feedback on how well that works and whether it becomes cumbersome in any way?

    1. The feedback is that it isn’t cumbersome at all, though enough people have asked about it that we’ve added riser stickers to the game for people to use optionally (see note about this in the rulebook and the FAQ on our website; I also mention it in the PPC video).

  90. Hey Jamey. Will there be an opportunity to purchase the metal mechs as a separate set outside of the game?

    1. Thanks John! Currently we plan to offer the plastic mechs as a separate set later in 2023, but we don’t plan to sell the metal mechs separately.

        1. Unfortunately ironclad edition is English only. Being able to buy metal mechs only for everyone would be nice. You actually had Scythe Metal Mechs in your store. Demand wasn’t big enough to do it again?

          1. We continue to reprint the metal mechs for Scythe. For Expeditions, we’re offering the metal mechs in the Ironclad Edition, which is not English-only–any localization partner can choose to make that edition. We will consider selling the Ironclad metal mechs by themselves in the future.

  91. I love the large tiles, but can you guesstimate now much play area is needed for the assembled map and leaving players some space for their mats and cards? I can generally squeeze in space for two players on my card table with the standard board Scythe, but this looks like I’ll need to go large even for Automa mode.

    1. I can! That information is actually on the page above. :) “The box is 390x321x84mm, and the game–set up for 5 players–takes up around 99x90cm on the table (3 feet squared).”

  92. Hi Jamey, thematic question with regards to the evil influence in this game. What exactly is the nature of the “corruption”? Is it a spirit creature, like a demon? Or an alien-like symbiote, similar to Venom from the Spider-Man comics? Or something else entirely?

    1. Thanks for asking about this here, Laurence! The most important answer to this question is that Expeditions is a work of fiction. Secondarily, the meteorites are alien in nature, and the corruption/ancient evil they awaken is akin to Cthulhu.

For you or anyone else who is concerned about this, I’d encourage you to review the images and videos I’ve posted about the game, as there’s a lot of content there to help you decide if the darker themes of Expeditions make you uncomfortable (just like the dark themes of warfare and imperialism in Scythe, which are much closer to reality than Expeditions, and the whole “kids hunting kids” theme of the first book of Red Rising). While I think it’s good for us to push ourselves–especially when separating reality from fiction–I also don’t want you to spend your hard-earned money on something that doesn’t bring you joy.

  93. Jamey, I was already excited about Expeditions and was looking forward to July. But then I watched the unpacking video and learned the insert is already set up to receive an expansion. Sweet. Might it include new cards as well as characters/mechs?

    1. Thanks James! The insert is designed for the *possibility* of expansions–no expansions have been designed. There’s room in the insert for all sorts of possibilities: new mechs, new tiles, new cards, new tokens, etc.

  94. Pre-ordered Expedition last month and forgot to add one thing. Stonemaier got your back — just send an Email to Joe with order number and what you wanted to add. An invoice will be Emailed and simple pay the different. No need to place another order, then request combine them together. Two Thumbs Up!

  95. Hi Jamie. Will there be a need for any third party inserts for this game or has it been designed to have a fairly quick set up and put away time?

Also, have you put any thought into expansions for this game?

    1. Peter: I’ve designed the insert and tray for quick setup and cleanup (and to accommodate some potential future expansions).

  96. Hey Jamey ! Will there be a french version of Expeditions ?
I’m a big fan of Scythe, thanks a lot for that wonderful game !

  97. I’m considering ordering Expeditions, and I have questions about shipping.

First of all, I thought becoming a Stonier champion provided free shipping as part of it, is this no longer a thing?

Second, it used to be that orders over $100 unlocked free shipping, (In the USA) but now it looks like you need an oder closer to $130, is this a mistake, or is that just going to be how it is from now on? I was waiting to order the game for a few reasons, and now it’s looking like it’ll cost me a bit more. I love your games but I figured I’d check to make sure something was wrong, because they can be a wee bit out of my price range sometimes, and there’s a pretty big difference between an order of $100 and one of $130. ;)

    Thank you!

    1. I just went to order from the Australia/NZ store and noticed this too. I have been sitting on my shopping cart and when I went to order I saw that it no longer had free shipping until I put a lot more in the cart. Just wondering if this is permanent now?

      1. The free shipping threshold is $125 USD (or the current equivalent, depending on your region). Champions save 20% on their order and on shipping.

  98. Guile is an interesting name for a resource but I think I’m going to refer to it as “Order” since to me vanquishing corruption feels like restoring order!

    1. Indeed there is–check out the image in at the top of the sidebar (I’m on a PC–I’m not sure if the sidebar appears on mobile).

    2. Hey Jamey! So I tried to pre-order the game but it denied me but still charged my card. I submitted an email to hopefully resolve this issue but I hopeful that this doesn’t affect my pre-order of the ironclad edition. So I’m hoping you can answer my concern and we can resolve it. Thanks in advance!

  99. I feel that the game is almost a cooperative game where your trying to clear out the icky bad stuff very similar to the fallout game or exodus to get the points, would it not be better to just reskin this as a semi cooperative game or to add some mech combat in where every player has some combat cards, this would make it a bit more interesting. I have pre ordered but I’m really on the fence about cancelling, I know I’m only one person but some more game play content is definitely needed, as the stuff I’ve seen so far isn’t exciting me and I love a few of your games, despite questionable decisions in some of the box designs

    1. We encourage anyone who wants to see full gameplay and reviews to wait until May to preorder–that’s when such content will be available. The rulebook and several videos about the game are currently available. The game is complete and is now over a month into the production process.

    2. The rule book does a great job explaining the game mechanics cleanly but I didn’t feel like I had a grip of the feel and flow of the game just from the rules until I went back over it a couple times after having the whole picture… if that’s what you mean.

If you haven’t watched the preview of a few turns on Stonemaier’s channel, you may want to check that out to see if you’ll like this game. Nothing wrong with being cautious, you know your taste best.

For myself I was happy with what I did discover and I rather like the prospect about being an exploration rather than combat focused game.

  100. Hey! Just a little thought after watching the video, since you seem to plug a lot of cards under the mechtile eventually and sometimes forcing you awkwardly to lift it up depending on the surface etc, and some of the pieces might be thrown around, have you considered adding in the base game or selling some sort of separate “legs” or somekind of a bottom frame for the mechtile to elevate it up just a little bit from the table so you can insert the cards easier under it? I already thought I’d 3D print a small frame for each player once I get the game to improve quality of life but I would rather order one from you just for immersion.

Anyway the game looks exciting and I can’t wait to try it out!

  101. Hi,
I preordered the game, can’t wait to play it!
I wanted to ask some questions about some pieces revealed:
    – the effect of the mech ‘Odin’s Wrath’ (You may trash a map at any time
on your turn to gain x, y or 1$) is once per turn?
    – card number 56 (Boast. If every opponent is south of you, gain xx): what
is meant for ‘is south of you’? if all other opponents are still in the starting
math they are considered south of you?
(for this one i ask because it’s on a ‘South’ tile).

    Thanks,
    Paolo

    1. Odin’s Wrath’s ability can be used at any time on your turn (no limit to the number of times per turn, though you’re limited by the number of map tokens you have).

The map is oriented in a north-south direction, so for someone to be south of you, they need to be on a tile that is lower than yours. Basecamp counts as south of all tiles.

      1. Since you’re answering questions about that card (Chart a Course North), I was wondering if you are allowed to gain the secondary benefit if you are unable to Boast. Are there other cards like this where there are two benefits, one of which you might not be able to do. Is the second benefit conditional upon the first?

        1. Item cards do indeed offer two benefits for the worker ability, and they are independent, not conditional.

          1. Thanks for the reply Jamey. To be clear I’m not talking about Instant vs Ongoing benefits of Item cards. The card in question (56) is actually a Quest card, but it lists two benefits in the Ability section: “Boast. If every opponent is South of you gain [2 Power].” I can foresee wanting to use the card to gain those two power when I’m unable to perform the Boast. Not sure if this would be allowed.

          2. Thanks for clarifying! Yes, even then those benefits are independent. The only conditional benefits clearly state the condition using “if/then” wording.

  102. I am really looking forward to this game and pre-ordered the Ironclad edition with coins. It seems like the cards will be used a fair amount, and I appreciate the feedback to protect them by including raised stickers for the tiles. I almost always sleeve cards too to protect them from heavy use. How will the box/insert accommodate sleeved cards?

    1. Daniel: We designed the insert to accommodate plenty of cards, sleeved or unsleeved. One nice element about Expeditions is that you only ever shuffle the cards once per game, which minimizes wear and tear, but I understand the desire to sleeve.

  103. Bonjour Mr Stegmaier,
Je suis extrêmement heureux d’apprendre que mon “jeu de coeur” voit arriver une suite. je voulais savoir si vous pensez diffuser une version française avec les figurines métalliques.
    Merci d’avance pour votre réponse.

    Philippe Augustin

    1. Hi Philippe! That’s completely up to Matagot, our French partner. I would recommend messaging them with your question.

  104. Hi, I saw that you were changing one of the short sides of the box to have a vertical orientation for those that want to stand it. When you were showing the box, it looked like the neither long side had a horizontal option. For those without super deep shelves it will have to go the long way, and would be weird with the name tiny and sideways. Definitely not the end of the world, but I thought it was odd that the long sides had vertical displays.

  105. Hi Jamey – the game looks very interesting and I’m excited to see more about it. I read the the rulebook nd noticed a possible typo on Page 8. The example at the bottom of the page says that the player has “7 Guile”, but the illustrations show 6 guile and the example is written as though it is 6.

Everything else seems well written and easy to understand :)

  106. On r23 of the Rulebook, at the end of page 8 the text concerning Location 20 reads: “It is worth $2 at the end of the game (the”

Missing the end of the sentence?

    1. On the last turn of the sample turns video, you solve a quest. Didn’t you have to play the character card before you can tuck the quest? Just checking if I understood the rule.

  107. Thanks Jamey for the quick response. It’s been handeled meanwhile. I love the customer support and help this company gives!

  108. I saw on youtube that a user asked if it was possible to have the plastic mechs for sale separately. I am another person who would buy them. It’s nice to have metal mechs, but also the plastic ones. Great work anyway, you are always the best!!!!

  109. A message to Jamey or the team selling the products. I placed my order a few days ago, but I assumed there would be seperate metal mechs in the future. However on the live feed from Facebook, you stated there won’t be.
    So maybe my general question:
Is it still possible to change my order to the Iron version? I’m affraid I already paid though..
If it would be possible I have a second Question.
You also said you would be open minded about a possible expansion with 2 extra mechs, IF, and only if, you would create extra content, would you make them Iron too?

Anyway if none of these things are possible, I want you to know I’m very happy with my version and it wouldn’t be a big problem. ;)

    I’m very exSCYTHEd now! :D

    1. I’ll forward your message to our customer service team so they can help you with your order. And yes, if we make new mechs in the future for Expeditions, there will be a plastic option and a metal option.

  110. Just noticed the photo of the mech. Those are indeed huge! I also noticed on the Expeditions mechs, the cranes are in reversed positions. My first assumption is that these are production models, so that you guys can see how different things look. But out of a complete sense of excitement for this game, I’ll ask: Are there going to be slight variations in mechs between the two editions?

    1. Jay: Thanks for asking! I checked with Panda about that, and apparently the crane got turned around in the sample-creation process. The real version of the crane should/will be the same as the plastic mech.

  111. How fast do you think this game going to sell out, especially in the ironclad edition? It looks awesome so I need to know how long I have to find it in my budget to buy this thing if possible…

Thanks in advance for another great game! ;)

    1. If you want to guarantee yourself a copy, I’d recommend preordering by February 22. However, we’re trying to make enough copies to last through the July launch.

  112. Hi, I just noticed that the Europe Store is the only one that doesn’t have a discount on the preorder of Expeditions (in fact, I don’t see any discount in the Special Offers section either). Is that correct? Is the price for the preorder the same we’ll get after the game hits retail?

      1. Thanks! That is the discounted price. I’ve heard that you can more easily see the “compare at” price if you switch the currency to British pounds.

    1. I’ve checked in some detail and it seems that the game is 20% more expensive in Europe/UK (after the discount). Are these import taxes in the price? I guess that’s why it seems like there was no discount. 😀

The games are shipped from the UK, so there’s a risk of a further taxation when we buy in the EU.

Can you please give some feedback on this?

      1. VAT is legally required to be in the listed price in Europe. We ship from the UK, prepaying duties so you don’t have to. But you have to pay tax, just like we pay sales tax in the US (but at checkout fir us).

        1. Thanks for the reply.

My concern is that I will have to pay VAT twice. UK to Belgium is export and as such the invoice would normally not have VAT, but Belgium would charge 21% when imported. If you already include 20% mark up in the sales price for UK VAT, we would be paying VAT twice.

    1. Reuben: Both versions will be available from Stonemaier Games, but retailers and distributors can only reserve Ironclad Editions over the next few weeks.

      1. Hi,

I pre-ordered the iron version yesterday but don’t see a confirmation email at all? Is there a way to verify my order?

        Thanks,
        Ben

        1. Thanks! You should have a confirmation email—maybe check your spam folder? If you don’t see it, I can search for it using your email.

  113. Hi,
Do you know when it will be available in other languages (French in particular) ?
Or alternatively, how language-dependent is the game?
    Bertrand

    1. The game is fairly language-dependent (see the text on the cards). Matagot has been announced as one of our localization partners–feel free to ask them when they plan to make the game available.

  114. Hello Jamey!

I have a website in which I talk about board games.
I was wondering if I was allowed to use images found on this website when writing about Expeditions.

Of course I would credit both Stonemaier and the artist/designer.

    1. Thanks for asking, Riccardo. Absolutely, you can share the images I’ve shared when talking about Expeditions.

      1. I saw that I was actually wondering about the characters not factions sorry for confusion. I saw 1 mech that looked like a boat and wondered where’s Bjorn…Also I wanted to say Scythe was my first board game with advanced elements and still my absolute favorite. The only bad thingis that I compare every game my family and I get to it. I hope Expeditions expands to 7 people like scythe did

  115. Looks great! Are there any plans to make any part of Expeditions compatible with Scythe, and vice versa? Like bringing characters and mechs across into either game?

    1. They’re completely separate games, just in the same world. There are characters from Scythe in Expeditions, but the mechanisms don’t overlap. I’m totally fine with fan-made crossover creations, though!

  116. I was just wondering will there be an iron clad bundle with metal coins and the folded space insert? Or will this come later as I’d really like to just order everything together.

Also will there be expansions for this game and if so is it worth getting the folded space insert, I made this mistake with a few other games where I’ve had to re-buy inserts due to jumping the gun early.

    1. There’s actually no Folded Space insert for Expeditions; there’s a custom plastic insert included in both versions of Expeditions by default. You can add metal coins to your preorder.

I’ve designed the Expeditions insert to accommodate a variety of future expansion possibilities.

      1. Hey Jamey. Will Usonia be present in this game? Usonia’s artwork (representing the US) is too good not to be used one day.

        1. Paulo: Expeditions’ setting is Siberia, so Usonia isn’t in it, but there is a character in Expeditions from Usonia (Matthew and Caesar–you can find them in the rulebook).

  117. Just here for positive words. What a fantastic surprise and early birthday present for myself! Pre-ordered Ironclad and I am so excited to get back to 1920+ in a brand new way! As someone who has art of 1920+ on my walls, and has been a die-hard scythe fan for many years, I couldn’t have asked for a better announcement for your next game, Jamey. Very much looking forward to it. Thanks again for all the years of fun!

  118. I noticed the following text in the rulebook describing the meaning of the word “OR” on page 7:
“OR: If a card (e.g., characters and companions) has the word “OR” on it, the clauses before and after that word are *completely independent*. You may only select one or the other.”
    [*emphasis* added]

I believe the the phrase “completely independent” could be understood by some as the opposite of what is probably intended; if they are independent, then one can be true whether or not the other is true, and both could be true at the same time. (This is the meaning of OR in Boolean logic, after all.) But the clarification “You may only select one or the other” shows that understanding to likely be incorrect. Thus, I think the words “completely independent” should be replaced with the words “mutually exclusive”, meaning either option can be valid, but not both at the same time.

    1. My extreme enthusiasm for this new game is reflected in the way I am combing through the details of the rulebook lol

      1. There is also what appears to be an editing placeholder on page 4 (under “Refresh:” it has (ital.) in parentheses which I can only assume was meant that the following sentence should be in italics :-) wasn’t sure where to post this, or if it was too late to fix!

        1. Thanks! Yes, that’s the latest draft I received, and it includes two instances of (ital) when the next sentence should be ital. :)

  119. I can image that a thematic playmat as foundation on the table to lay tiles upon will be very nice, instead of tiles on the raw tabletop. Tiles placed directly on the table with no ‘context around’ feels a lot less thematic. I wish.

    1. It’s certainly something we’re considering for the future! Playmats are a bit of a beast for shipping and storage. Playing Expeditions with the tiles on a nice wood table has felt nicely thematic to me.

  120. Big Scythe fan but not exactly sure if this game style for me. Can i cancel preorder if later I conclude based on watching reviews/plays that its not for me? Thanks

    1. If you think there’s a chance you will cancel, I’d recommend waiting to preorder until later. Cancellations, while possible, cause complications. I’m going to try to put up a short gameplay video very soon.

  121. About the box size: is the 321 mm correct? Most boxes won’t go beyond 300 which will fit perfectly on most shelves… 20 mm more won’t.

    1. You know, I thought that was true, but then I tested Expeditions in my Kallax shelf, and it fits great. By my calculations, each Kallax square is 340x340mm.

      1. Yeah, for Kallax, but I’ve got normal shelves of 30 cm deep. And 6 months to figure out something different, haha.

  122. Just this past weekend, my family was playing Scythe and I said, “It’s too bad they’ve said there will be no more expansions for this, even though the ones we have are perfectly fine.” Then this dropped; I couldn’t pre-order quickly enough. I understand that this is a new game, but I love this world.

  123. On the PDF of the rulebook, it says
“You can skip the rulebook and instead watch a rules video at
    STONEMAIERGAMES.COM/GAMES/EXPEDITIONS/MEDIA-REVIEWS”
I’ve tried going to that link but it always says “Page not found”. Do you have a link to the video?

    1. We don’t yet have videos for Expeditions; the game is at the beginning phase of production. When we have videos, that’s where they will appear.

  124. Apologies – this may have been asked but I’m struggling to go through every comment.

Is the pre-order going to close at a certain point? If so, will you have further supply of the game or will there be another pre-order for a second print run like the Wingspan nesting box?

Also, will prices remain the same? Thank you!

    1. Joe: My goal is to make enough copies to cover demand through the release of the game (and afterwards). If we run out, we’ll make more! :) The prices will remain the same until the official launch.

    1. We only sell the English version, but you’re welcome to ask Feuerland to see if they’re making a German version.

  125. Looks great. Well done.
I noticed a typo, the rulebook says 37 but the page says, “a bag filled with 36 silkscreen printed corruption tile”.

    1. Good eye, but it’s not a typo. The 37th corruption token is the one with the number 20 on it, and it is not put in the bag.

  126. I’m not sure this addresses the question: even if all the initial actions are equally valuable, the first player has their choice among all of them and each subsequent player (on the first turn) has fewer choices. Also, since the game is also a race to stars, it seems like earlier players are more likely to get an extra turn than later players–the last player only ends up taking the same number of turns as everyone else if they are the one who triggers the final round.

Is there some advantage going fourth has over going first that I’m not seeing here? Do playtest results show no win-rate advantage for going first over going last?

    1. The player who goes first has no advantage over the player who goes fourth or fifth, nor is there a need for players going fourth or fifth to have an advantage over the first or second player. It’s what you do with your turns that matters–this is a game involving dozens of turns per player, so the incremental value of any given turn is low. As you noted, when the end game is triggered, everyone gets another turn.

“Is there some advantage going fourth has over going first that I’m not seeing here?”

They may have slightly more information, as a player going earlier may have revealed a new location.

“Do playtest results show no win-rate advantage for going first over going last?”

This is so irrelevant to this game given the sheer number of turns that we didn’t need to collect data on it. Not a single playtester (out of hundreds) even mentioned it as something that they objectively or subjectively found to be even the smallest concern.

I understand the type of player you’re representing, Philip, and I want you to be able to have fun with Expeditions too. This is not a problem in the game.

    1. Ashley: The Expeditions mechs and other components aren’t connected to Scythe. We do mention in the Expeditions rulebook that it’s possible that fans of Scythe will create a variant to allow the big mechs in Expeditions to be used in Scythe, but there’s no official method for that.

      1. Thanks Jamey- Beyond excited for this as the Scythe game is one of my all time favorites! Also excited to hear more about the Wits End / Stonemaier partnership of a future game.

  127. Last time you worked with Jakub it was revealed that many of the Illustration were traced collages stolen of the internet. Jakub had in some cases painted over copyrighted material without permission. He never mentioned the artists or shows the images in the source material and tutorials. This unprofessional behavior and shady practices from an artist trying to compensate for his lack of skill could have put Stonemaier Games in danger of being sued. Why collab with someone who´s considered a thief and tarnished Stonemaier Games good name?

    1. I’ll address this exactly once: What was actually “revealed” was that Jakub, like any artist, looks at a variety of reference images when he paints (mostly stock photos; there are two specific photos credited in the Expeditions rulebook). It has been well-documented that Jakub did not trace or steal (see https://youtu.be/wkxPStaxHuE, for example).

My concern was not Jakub; rather, it was false perceptions persisting as a result of the unwarranted attack on his character (like your comment here). The post in question was made nearly 6 years ago, and Jakub has continued create a vast variety of art since then. It’s time to move on and move forward.

I know I can’t change your mind, but I would kindly remind you that you’re talking about another human here, someone who has tried to grow and improve over the years–both as a person and an artist–and consider how it would feel if someone made this comment about you.

  128. Is the “free shipping” over x amount only available for the country the fulfilment centre is? I’ve noticed a significant jump in shipping for Asia since fulfilment changed from US to AU.

    1. Free shipping over the equivalent of $100 USD is available on each webstore for most orders where it makes financial sense, and each webstore ships to a specific region.

    1. I hope to inspire Jakub Rozalski with this comment. In this alternate universe I’m missing the Turkic, Tuvan or Mongolian people. The earliest Turkic-speaking peoples identifiable in Chinese sources are the Yenisei Kyrgyz and Xinli, located in South Siberia.

Medieval European chroniclers subsumed various Turkic peoples of the Eurasian steppe under the “umbrella-identity” of the “Scythians”. (wikipedia)

Even in the modern days, many Turkic tribes still live in Siberia and Yakutsk. The Turkic history has many iconic heroes, epic tales and ave very colourful costumes that could be very inspiring to Jakub Rozalski.

All I’m saying is that there is a much bigger world out there than just Europe and hopefully we could see this back in this alternate world as well.

      – Big Fan

      1. Onder: I appreciate your input, and I would recommend that you wait to see the full art in the game, as I think your wish has been granted. :)

  129. I spotted the “tentacled squirrel” on the cover, and see that the players are manipulating “corruption”, and would like to ask is there a “Cthulhu-y” (not a word!) vibe or influence in the game?

  130. Hi,
We are going to the origins game fair this summer. Any chance a prototype of this game will be there? Last I checked, you guys aren’t going to be there, but I think it’s still open for you to exhibit there.

    1. By Origins we’ll have final copies of the game with reviewers, so maybe an advance copy reviewer could bring theirs?

      1. Alright, that sounds good. So y’all aren’t interested in going to Origins? Totally fine if not, just want to put it out there.

  131. Super stoked by this — pre-ordered! Will this be up on Tabletopia (perhaps even before the hard copy is available)?

        1. I think there’s a chance of that for Scythe. We typically don’t ask BGA to put brand-new games on their platform, but maybe in 4-5 years.

  132. Reading through the rulebook, it looks like the basic “get your engine started” actions (acquiring cards and workers) are attached to the initial map spaces. Since the spaces are exclusive, this seems like having all the spaces available on the first turn will be a significant first-player advantage–or at least I suspect that at some point I’ll hear a third or fourth player complain that they have no way to get a worker first turn in order to start seeing their card abilities activate. Even if other options are attractive (rushing unexplored hexes for map tokens?), it seems like later players will have fewer opening options.

I don’t see any compensations for being later in turn order. Is there something I’m missing in my analysis?

    1. Yes, there is tension regarding all locations in the game. Just as valuable as cards are workers, and just as valuable as workers are unknown locations (and the map tokens they come with). There are tradeoffs and choices with every Gather action.

  133. Should use the new Mechs as mobile starting spawn locations in Scythe. Perhaps with their own movement/upgrade addon.

  134. Will both the standard and Ironclad versions hit retail or will the Ironclad version only be made available direct from Stonemaier Games?

    1. The Ironclad version is available for retailers to order for the next 2 weeks; after that it’s only available on our webstores.

  135. Are Usonia (from the 1920+ world) part of this sequel game (or will they ever be)? Or is there an impediment because of usage being done already at the time of iron harvest?

  136. Besides the obvious shaving down of the game to a smaller form, and the engine being in the cards, how will expeditions differ from scythe

    1. Check out the infographic and the rulebook on the above page. All mechanisms in Expeditions are different than Scythe.

  137. Hello! When I first put the ironclad edition and metal coins in my cart, it said I qualified for free shipping because the total exceeded $100. I didn’t get a chance to finalize the order until awhile later, but then the message about free shipping had disappeared and it charged me for shipping. Was shipping supposed to be free if the total exceeded $100? I heard others got free shipping

    1. We have a free shipping threshold at $100, but if there are discounts applied at checkout, that might bring the total back under $100.

  138. Jamey. let me get this straight, pre-sales will be open until what month? If I want to make the purchase only in April, until then will we still have open and guaranteed pre-sales?

    1. We’re locking in production quantities in 2 weeks. After that, there will be a finite quantity available in the first print run. My goal is for it to last until even beyond the game’s arrival at fulfillment centers in July, but the only date I can 100% guarantee is to preorder by February 15.

  139. Why would Dr Tarkovsky say tandra and Tangaska? Surely he says toondra and Toongooska – whether he is Polish or Russian. Such a blunder doesn’t make sense in the wake of Cortes/Pizarro fiasco.

    1. The voiceover artist is Polish, so this is a human being speaking in his normal accent with his normal pronunciation. There is no blunder, nor is this related at all to real-life conquistadors (Scythe is set in a fictional alternate universe).

      1. Well said.not everything has to be a blunder,or even be something so argue aboutlets just enjoy this wonderful hobby.i for one am a huge huge fan of scythe and viticulture, and I’m super excited for your newest design.

    1. There’s no plan, but I designed the insert to fit up to 7 mech miniatures, so I think it will be possible to play at higher player counts in the future.

  140. A question about final scoring. I see that each glory token is worth a different amount for completing 0, 1, 2, or 3 quests. However, a player cannot actually place a glory token in the Quests area unless they’ve completed 4 quests. In this case, if the player has completed 4 quests, are glory tokens still worth the same as completing just 3 (10 points each)?

  141. Looks amazing! Quick question: Scythe solo had issues regarding replayability and the automa acting veryy differently from humans. What has been done to fix these issues in Expeditions?

    1. I’m aware of various perspectives on our solo modes, but the Scythe solo mode is also one of the top-ranked solo modes of any game ever, so I think such issues are a minority opinion. Expeditions is a completely different game than Scythe; the solo rulebook is available for you to learn how it works.

  142. Hi Jamey, are you able to share the scoring table for the glory tokens? I can see it’s printed on the base camp board but it’s too pixelated when I zoom in on the rulebook for me to make it out. Is that the only place the table is in the rulebook or am I missing it somewhere else? Thanks!

  143. Sign me up! We recently reviewed Scythe on my podcast and we seriously love it! By the by…if you wanna help out 3 month old podcast, we’ll playtest a prototype for you! :)

All kidding aside, I wish you the best. This game sounds like a winner just from what you’ve posted here and I can’t wait to see more of it!

  144. Scythe is the game introduced me to the hobby. I’m so excited for this. Thank you Jamey for keeping this wonderful IP going!

  145. With your previous model of game releases (pre-orders only open right before the games start shipping), the corresponding Rolling Realms promo was generally available to be bundled in at the same time to save on shipping (as distinct from unrelated Rolling Realms promos, which released in triplets to also be slightly more shipping-efficient without having a big box to tag along with).

Are there any plans for something similar here? (With the much more in-advance pre-order, seemingly before the Rolling Realms promo is also available for said pre-order?) Sorry if I’ve missed that info elsewhere :)

  146. How much of a focus will there be on the internal organizer being functional? I’ve enjoyed a lot of modern card-focused games where the plastic insert was fantastic for organizing everything, along with wells in the organizer for tokens.

If it’s not a huge focus, no worries. I have a 3d printer lol. But it is exciting to see the current movement towards more functional innards for games.

    1. We’ve put a lot of time and attention into creating a functional, easy-to-use insert that speeds up setup and cleanup. :)

      1. Awesome! I was already excited to see the game announcement, and now I am even more so. Thanks for the answer!

  147. Thank you for allowing there to be a preorder period that will at least allow us to get the foot in the door before finalizing inventory. I know that has been a challenging topic in conversations past and it seems like this is a solid middle ground in allowing that initial rush to happen to read demand followed by locking it down to a finite quantity. I hope you have successfully found the sweet spot.

Scythe is the game that brought me to be a fan so this was such an instabuy for me. To this day it is one of my most treasured games.
    Excited to be backing it.

  148. The basecamp being a tile and not a printed area in a main game board gives me all the vibe of a possibility for future expansions that add different basecamps. When you design your games, how much would you think that the “possible expansion points” impact on your design decisions?

    1. I noticed that too. I am sure after everything they went through with Scythe (extra factions, modular board, etc.) they are going into this with expansions in mind.

    2. I honestly hadn’t thought of different basecamps, but that’s a neat idea. I definitely try to keep the possibility of expansions in mind when I get to the stage where we design the insert.

      1. They are the same coins for both games but they upgraded the color for the $5 coin (which is awesome). You can get the updated $5 coins for your Scythe set for (ironically) $5 plus shipping in the store.

    1. I’m pretty sure the discount is applied to the product. It was announced some time ago this would be how Champions’ benefits would work moving forward.

  149. I see the Ironclad version has silicon base snaps, assuming the mech’s are the same size, might that mean that they will be back in stock for the metal mech’s?

  150. Ha ha ha, the meteorite is called Charterstone? So I guess the theory that all SM games happen in the same universe is correct? The SMGU Stonemaier Gamematic Universe is real!

  151. This got me confused in the rules: “If your action token is covering Move, Play, or Gather at the beginning
of your turn, you may shift it to Refresh (a Refresh turn returns your
played cards to hand and workers to your mech mat).
    Note: If you have
zero cards in hand, you cannot choose to Move and Play or Gather and
Play; if your action token is covering Play at the beginning of your turn and
you have zero cards in hand, you must take a Refresh turn”.

This excerpt basicly says that if you zero cards, you need to refresh, because you either have the token covering “Play” or not covering Play. If it covers “Play”, you the last sentence says I need to get a refresh. And if it doesn’t cover “Play”, it is either Move-Play or Gather-Play, and the first sentence says that neither could be chosen. Am I missing something here?

    1. Right, if your token is covering Play at the beginning of your turn, like any other turn, you must move the token first, thus revealing Play (but you can’t take a turn that includes Play if you have no cards in turn).

      1. Ah, now I get it. It is just one rule: if your token is over Play at the beginning of the turn, you cannot choose Move-Play or Move-Gather, therefore you must choose Refresh!

    1. From the above page: “Localization Partners: There are 7 localization partners for Expeditions, including Matagot (France) and Ghenos Games (Italy). These partners will announce their participation at their discretion.”

      1. Thank you! I’ll get them to do that. I love anything you can do to help the retail space, even if it means I lose out on my champions discount.

  152. I love that there’s an “Ironclad” version available! However, I like to have one copy each of both the plastic and metal miniatures. Is there any chance that you’ll make just the plastic minis available for purchase?

  153. Hi there, quick question about this new pre-order process. One of the lines in the e-newsletter confused me: “The preorder will remain open throughout the production process as long as those finite units are available.” Does this mean there’s a chance the game could sell out before we get a chance to see the full reveal and reviews? I’d prefer to wait until those before ordering but I’m worried about missing out.

    1. We’re trying to order enough to prevent that, but yes, it is possible. Of course, we’ll always make more if there’s more demand.

      1. After the print run is finalized, it might be a good idea to reserve some of that quantity for post-review orders if it looks like the stock has a chance to run out before then. I’m glad you’re a publisher that continues to try and avoid creating a FOMO, thank you!

        1. I am not sure that this type of announcement and pre-order are actually decreasing the level of FOMO. I feel the FOMO even though I logically know that SM will continue to reprint this game in the future if the demand warrants it. The future of the game is uncertain – very little is known at this point. I understand that Jamey thinks that this game, as a sequel to the beloved Scythe, is different, but I am not sure that I like this pre-order way of doing things. SM has set the standard of fully announcing games and then letting you order the game right away. That was one of the many things that set SM apart from the crowdfunding hordes. Not so sure now.

          1. I hear you, Mike, and we’re still here for you too–our focus remains on highlighting products when they’re actually in stock. This is just an option for 10-20% of people who prefer to set it and forget it (and not worry about needing to be available at a specific time at launch).
