In the world of Galecrest, sky pirates set sail on the winds in search of adventure, treasure, and glory. As an admiral, you command a vast and varied crew … but so do your rivals sailing other ships in the pirate fleet. Each day the fleet lands on a different island where you’ll send a crew member to collect your share of the loot, hoping they’ll return to boost your growing group of characters.

Libertalia was originally released in 2012. Ten years later, we’re celebrating the foundations of the original design with a heavily revised and expanded edition that includes all-new art, 40 characters per player, a reputation system to resolve tiebreakers, premium loot tokens, a robust solo mode, and much more.

If you like Mission: Red Planet, Broom Service, and other hand-management games, we think you will enjoy sneakily managing your crew in Libertalia: Winds of Galecrest!

  1. After watching a few reviews online, I recently purchased this game, playing with a group of six last weekend – we LOVED it! So much so that I’ve already purchased the metal coin add-on. The gameplay was really unique and cut-throat (pun intended) and everyone wanted to keep playing. Anything to further enhance this game, whether through additional add-ons or expansions, would be an immediate purchase for me!

    1. I’m so glad you had fun with your first play, Colin! We have a promo pack we’re releasing in a few months. :)

  2. It’s exciting to see a promo pack listed on the monthly progress report! Have you mentioned anywhere what that pack entails?

  3. I purchased two sets of the metal coins — love those things. My problem now is storing the coins in the box. The treasure tray/lid will not accommodate this many coins. That said, I have done some measuring and the box and insert can accommodate two of these trays!

My problem is locating another tray. I reached out to see if this would be available as a replacement part (I know it is not a replacement, so I would certainly understand if I needed to pay for this). Unless I am misunderstanding, the response indicated that this is not something you guys would normally ship out due to the likelihood of it being damaged in transit.

I have looked around at various places where I thought I might be able to get something that would work here, but so far no luck. Just in case anyone else is in this state, I figured I would ask here: where would you guys recommend I go to find something that would work for this? Thanks in advance!

    1. David: You’re correct that we don’t typically ship trays and inserts. We do, however, sell some similar trays on our webstore (the brown Wingspan trays).

  4. Hello. I was wondering why there are only 39 automa cards? Was there a specific reason to not include card 37?

    1. The ability on Character 37, Wind Nymph, isn’t used in solo play so it wasn’t included in the automa deck.

      1. IIRC we decided making Automa “intelligent” enough to handle this very powerful card in an sufficient manner would add too much complexity for just one card, so we left it out.

  5. Where did the idea come from to make the pirates animals? I really like it but appears to be a debate online about it. I guess you can’t please everyone. Flying pirate animals, what’s not to like?

Also, amazing job with the 2 player variant. Such a simple thing that has a huge impact on how it plays at 2 players.

The design diaries were a very good read on this one.

    1. Thanks Peter! Perhaps I just enjoy the fantastical nature of airships in fantasy settings than nautical ships–I think it was I who requested that of the artist. :)

  6. Got my wife to try this game, finally. It was a great experience. This game has a bit more ‘gotcha’ to it than she usually enjoys. Still, she had a great time and wants to play it more.

We also like to bling out our games. :)

Any chance Stonemaier will make metal coins for this one? I am going to look for some pirate themed coins on other sites. But if Stonemaier is going to make some specifically for this, then I can wait.

    1. Nevermind. I thought I has searched properly, but I guess I had not. I just found the Libertalia metal coins. Will be getting this immediately.

    1. Due to the war, we’re not currently working with publishers in Russia (though we miss bringing games to those in Russia who don’t support the war).

  7. I would like to share ideas for expansions.
    1. Mystery Boxes – Included are new loot tokens and a deck of cards. Each mystery box token has a number that correlates to a face down drafted card. The player who takes the mystery box loot token may take the card in the numbered position. Some cards are great, others are not so great.
    2. Black Spots – A card with a rank of 0. Everyone starts the game with it along with their first 6 crewmen. It has a dusk ability where the player who played it may challenge another player for their loot tokens.
    3. Promotion – A chance to increase your crewman’s rank and acquire the loot token you want.
    4. Royal Pardon – A rare power that allows one player to keep their whole crew on their ship for the next voyage.

  8. Ah! We almost forgot which voyage we were on. “Did we do the first populate loot tokens?” Were we playing 2nd voyage and just forgot the step? Mmm, it would be nice if we had a voyage track on the board (1 – 3). I see there is a space between the Reputation Track and Relic on both sides. Instead of make another board which would cost money, perhaps make a sticker and a marker token with the next expansion?

  9. Jamie,

Bringing this game to gamenight and I would love your insight on teaching this. We will be playing with some very inexperienced gamers.

  10. Just wanted to write here and give you guys a standing ovation for the solo mode. It’s fantastic. Prior to learning the solo mode, I played numerous games at 2- and 3-player counts, and to my delight the automa was eerily/amazingly similar to a 3-player game. Bravo!

We’re wondering about trying out the Pilferer instead of the Midshipman at a 2-player count, and I thought I’d ask if you guys tried that out at all during playtesting. There’s of course nothing wrong with the Midshipman, but I just wondered if this might work too. And by asking I’m saving us time in the event the Midshipman’s always better.

    1. Thanks Jay! We designed the Midshipman specifically for the purpose of 2-player games, so while we tried various versions of the Midshipman, it wasn’t like we were experimenting with completely different characters in its place. You’re welcome to try the Pilferer if you’d like. :)

    2. Thank you for your kind words, Jay.

IIRC we didn’t test the Pilferer with 2 human players. Off the top of my head. I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t work, but whether it works well is another question entirely :-).

      1. Thank you both for the replies. Only thing left to do is give it a try. If I loose my first hand I might be hooked..!

        Best wishes!

  11. Just got my copy in New Brunswick – looks great and I can’t wait to get it to the table this weekend.
One quick question: Were the coins shipping at a later date for Canadian orders? (Maybe a delay getting them to the Canadian distributor?). They weren’t in the package I received, the shipment confirmation was only for the game, and I haven’t gotten any other shipping notifications.

    Cheers

  12. Hello. I received the game in Switzerland but got a tax declaration from DHL now. I thought the price i paid in the EU store includes VAT, but I just got an invoice from DHL on 27EUR / 27CHF.
But the game looks fantastic and the metal coins are incredible!

    1. Given that Martin reported the same happening in Norway and both Switzerland and Norway are not EU members it does seem like something is not right in Spiral Galaxy’s setup for non-EU countries in Europe.

      1. You’re correct, Morten. While non-EU customers will need to pay taxes, we should not also be charging them VAT on the webstore. We’ll fix it and refund the webstore amount.

        1. Hi Jamey and Morten,

Thanks for your answers and the refund i already received on the taxes from the shop! Incredible customer service, fantastic experience. I wish all the stores were like this. I will definitely spread the word and will for sure shop again with you guys. Also really love the packaging material that dissolves in water! Maybe you could mention that on the invoices, so that people realize that, i only knew because of previous experience. All in all, fantastic game, fantastic packaging, fantastic support. I am really blown away by you all.

  13. Hello. I received the game in Norway but got a tax declaration from DHL just now. I see you mention PostNord regarding Denmark and we also have PostNord in Norway, but it got delivered with DHL. I see the price I paid for the game includes VAT from the EU store, but I just got an invoice from DHL on $41 / 355NOK.

    1. I’m sorry, Martin. That partially overlaps with the VAT paid on our website, which should not have been made. Please proceed to pay it, and we will reimburse you the overlapping portion.

      1. Norway isn’t a member of the EU while Denmark is, so maybe the setup that Spiral Galaxy created for the EU after Brexit doesn’t cover Norway.

While PostNord operates in both countries I think that it’s common to partner with different shipping companies in different countries. Either way, as long as the shipping companies are doing things correctly (which they might not have done in this case), it shouldn’t matter who handles the importing because it’s a matter of law not shipping company policy whether these kinds of fees and taxes should be applied for a given package.

        1. I’ll add that the agreement between Britain and the EU to temporarily have no mutual import fees expired on the 1st of January this year. Maybe something similar happened for Britain an non-EU countries in Europe but no workaround was found.

  14. Automa question: If the pilferer & automa characters tie rank (after the daytime ability has no effect for automa and changes her rank), what breaks the tie?

  15. Fantastic game and as always the components and quality is top notch. That’s one of the things I love about SM games. Never a disappointment. Some people don’t like the art but it’s right down my ally, I love it.

  16. Hi there!
    Eager to get my copy!
I got a USPS tracking number for two parcels (one of 8 lbs and the other 2 lbs).
I got the base game + the coins, could it be that delivery?
Just wanted to konw because I backed a lot of things on KS and GF last year :P (boring see nobody pandemic year)
I leave in Quebec city Canada.
    Thank you

    1. Yes, I think that’s likely. We recently learned that Hubtrotter has been splitting some multi-item orders into multiple packages, a practice we will discourage in the future due to environmental reasons.

  17. Hats off to the whole Stonemaier games crew…the components are top notch yet again. An absolute pleasure to play with…This will be played a lot.

  18. I just wanted to share something and didn’t know where to share it. Hopefully it’s okay to do it here.

I preordered a copy of Libertalia and the very next morning I was hit with some financial issues. Father of five, two with special needs, money can be tight. Every dollar matters when something comes up.

So I emailed Joe Aubrey to see about canceling the preorder. I’m going to be honest. Based on experience in the past, not with Stonemaier, I didn’t really expect to be able to cancel my preorder.

Well Joe hit me right back and was so kind. He told me he could absolutely do that. May not seem like a big deal to some but it helped me breathe better when I saw his reply. I just want to say how impressed I am with your company and it’s commitment to and care for its customers. It “is not” the norm. So thank you.

P.S. I definitely still plan on getting the game one day when our situation changes. Excited about it.

    1. Thanks for sharing, Jay, and I hope your situation improves. We ship pretty quickly (hence why cancellations typically aren’t possible), so I’m glad we were able to get to the order right away.

    2. Hey.. Somehow I recognized your name from the dice tower werewolf series that I watched over a year ago. You were my favorite player out of everyone that played. Would you mind if I bought you a copy of Libertalia?

      1. Wow! Are you serious? I don’t know what to say. That’s so very kind and generous. I’m just in shock.

And I need to get back in some werewolf games. It was so much fun. When our newest baby was born last January I just kind of got too busy and stopped playing.

        1. I stopped watching around Christmas time. The last one I saw was a weird wedding variant or something like that. How do you want to connect so I know where to send it?

  19. What a game! A perfect balance of strategy and fun. Thank you! Game with 3 players took 40 minutes!!!

  20. Hi, I got my copy of Libertalia on Monday (super fast). I’m really excited to play it this weekend but I wanted to let you know that one of the plastic bits that holds the number wheel to the treasure chest doesn’t fit. The diameter is too big. Luckily there is an extra one in the box so no problems. I just wanted to give you this feedback. Thanks

    1. Thanks Joe! We’ll keep an eye on that, though I haven’t heard it from others yet. That’s why we included an extra. :)

      1. I just got the game and it looks great – did I miss something – are there suggestions as to where to place put the pieces so the box closes up nicely? I have not played the game yet – so perhaps it will be obvious when I do.

  21. Libertalia — I see the Automa book shows 39 Solo cards… I see there’s 1-40 printed on the cards just like all other cards. However, I see #37 is skipped and total is 39. I am curious why skipped #37? Why not just make it 1-39 printed on the cards as normally (nothing skipped)? By skipping #37 makes it seem I am missing a card but I am not. Confusing.

    1. We skipped card 37 because we couldn’t make it work in solo.

Given the way Libertalia works, the same character must have the same number for all players, so unfortunately we couldn’t relabel the cards 1-39. Instead, we relied on the rulebook, which states twice that there are 39 cards and later that #37 is intentionally missing.

I can see that we could have been clearer by noting directly in the component list which card number isn’t there.

    1. Sure, there’s a note about this on the order confirmation you should have received via email: Preorders typically take 1-2 weeks to ship.

  22. Hello
I am located in Denmark, and wondering where you guys ship from? This is regarding VAT and so on :)

    1. We ship from the UK to all of Europe. Like anything you would buy from a webstore in Europe, VAT is included in the listed price. :)

      1. I’ll add that the customs fee (PostNords importgebyr på 160 kroner) is also handled on our end, so the package won’t be delayed in customs and you won’t be charged the fee.

    1. There’s just one version of Libertalia: Winds of Galecrest. We also offer custom metal doubloon coins (only through our webstore as an add-on).

  23. Sorry to ask so late but Libertalia doesn’t come on the Europe store so I’m not sure if I need to preorder here

  24. Hi Jamey, if (when) I order today, how soon would the game ship? I’m ordering from the US, Washington state. And will it make a difference (in shipping/delivery dates) if my order includes the realm packs for Libertalia and RR?

      1. Thanks, Jamey! Order is in, now for the anticipation to build. I’m so excited to get this new version. Love the original and play often on BGA, but this looks even better. And I get new realms too? Yes please.

    1. As long as we have copies! Typically we don’t sell out of the games we make for at least a few months. :)

        1. They’re three separate products: Libertalia, metal coins, and the Rolling Realms promo. You’ll need to add each product you want to your cart. Thanks!

  25. Sorry, have another question. Can we order other in stock non-Libertalia products along with Libertalia and metal coins on March 2? And would that ship at the same time as only Libertalia orders?

    1. Indeed you can! You can include anything that’s in stock in your order, and it will all ship together in mid-March.

  26. Solo mode looks well thought out. Any reason we cannot add the solo AI to a 3 player game, essentially making it a 5 player game? Would it work with or without using the automa loot tiles? From the outside it looks like it would work just fine using the pre-printed loot tiles on either side.

    1. It unfortunately won’t work, because several of Automa’s character cards refer to “you” and there’s no single “you” when there are two humans. Some house ruling might fix that, though.

Some of the human loot tiles don’t make sense for Automa and some would be imbalanced, so you’d need to use the Automa loot tiles some of which would require house ruling for the same reason that some of the cards do IIRC.

  27. This looks like a lot of fun! The bright colors feel so adventurous to me, but the new style doesn’t really seem to float my local game group’s boat so hopefully I’ll get the chance to play this at a convention or board game cafe.

    1. A little before 3:00 am on Thursday. I know that’s late, but we have plenty of units designated specifically for Australia, so you can order when you wake up on Thursday morning at a normal time. :)

      1. Excellent, Thanks Jamie (and Steve) … I look forward to getting an order in. Also looking forward to the next Wingspan upgrade later this year.

  28. “The Pilferer gains a loot token using the priority list even if the Automa has an altered
priority for this round.” I can’t find where the Automa might have an altered priority. So far it looks like moth Pilferer and Automas have the same priority? When does it change for the Automatic and where can I find it in the rulebook?

  29. I just noticed the list of components has 280 cards listed, 240 character + 40 automa (I believe 39 character + 1 player aid?) But the picture says 279 cards, just a heads up on the discrepancy.
Can’t wait to order this game with the metal coins, rolling realms promos, & probably a Tapestry expansion or 2!!!

  30. On the website, it lists the card size as 57mm x 87mm. Yet on The Mill’s unboxing video, the bottom of the box lists the cards at 63mm x 88mm. Which is the correct size?

        1. Cody, I’ve pledged to personally reimburse anyone who bought sleeves at the wrong size that they can no longer use. If that’s the case for you, please let me know. Wingspan does use the 57x87mm sleeve in case you also sleeve that game, but its sleeves will not fit the 63x88mm cards found in Libertalia.

  31. I never played the original Libertalia, but am very much looking forward to this release!

Will we be able to order multiple copies during the pre-order, and can other items from the store be added during checkout?

    1. Thanks Adrian! Absolutely, you can add anything from our webstore that you’d like (even multiple copies). In addition to Libertalia, the other new products we’ll offer are the metal doubloon coins and the new promo for Rolling Realms (inspired by Libertalia).

  32. This looks really good. I like the clean look to the cards and game board. The artwork is very stylized and it works well. Apparently the art style doesn’t appeal to everyone, but I think it’s great. Looking forward to playing it.

  33. The Automa cards are the same size? 57x87mm ? (the description of the components is missing this). The total number of cards is 280? Does the insert fit sleeved cards?

    Thanks

      1. Thank you, Jamey.
I can barely wait will the preorder is open :D the metal coins are a must!!!
I think I will keep some doubloon on my desk near the metal mech from Scythe.

        1. Claudiu: Please note that I made a mistake regarding the card sizes. The correct size for all cards is 63x88mm. If you already bought sleeves for the smaller size, please let me know and I’ll personally send you a reimbursement.

          1. Thanks for the reply, I did not bought the sleeves yet. No worries.
I saw the question on the Facebook (shared post from The Mill) and after watching the unboxing I looked at Wingspan/Viticulture box to see if there are the dimensions printed on the box.
Is this the first time when the card dimension are printed on the box?

  34. Curious as to whether there will be upgraded coins. If not, I’m still buying this:) Terrific work as always, Jamey!

    1. Sorry, Jamey. Just read that metal coins will be an add-on. I read better next time!

  35. I am so pumped for this game! Any chance that with this game and future Stonemaier Games releases will they come with a corresponding Rolling Realms card that can be added to that main game

    1. Indeed! In the February 7 design diary I showed the Libertalia realm. Libertalia won’t come with the promo realm pack for Rolling Realms, but it will be available at a discount to add to your order during the preorder.

  36. All its missing for me, its some super cool Metal Pirate Coins! But its just a selfish wish! Everything else seems to be amazing! I was waiting for so long for a reprint/re-work of this game, thank you!

  37. Thank you for your attention to detail for us colorblind folks. Truly appreciated! Looking forward to this one.

  38. I know how fond of the original you are, so I have no doubt this new version will be great. I think the art is fun and colorful and I personally like it. I have the original but am looking forward to owning this version as well.

  39. Will the draw bag be better than the one in Plans and Ploys, with the known issues of wearing out quickly?

    1. Yep, here’s where I mention it in February 3rd’s design diary:

“I learned from Azul that pulling chunking, colorful bakelite tokens out of the bag is a delightful experience, so that’s exactly the material and size we used for loot tokens in Libertalia: Winds of Galecrest. The game includes 48 double-sided loot tokens, each with a unique color and icon for colorblind friendliness. You’ll fish them out of a sturdy cloth bag, double-stitched for durability (we learned after Tapestry: Plans & Ploys that single-stitched isn’t enough, nor is a thinner bag).”

  40. I am sold!! The detail and thought given to this game is on point!! I play alot at 1,2 and 4 and few games check all boxes.. I can’t wait to see how you turned this into a solo game… Now how do we move up this release date :)

  41. Excited for this game and I love the artwork shown so far! The only thing that throws me off is the L in the cover title. Is the top loop backwards?? It looks like 2ibertalia?? Am I crazy?? Still gonna buy 2ibertalia.

    1. We went big with the L. It’s an L shape, but with a lot of embellishment. Though, as a new edition, I also support 2ibertalia. :)

  42. Looks like this is a fun game, didn’t know original Libertalia, but I liked pirate themed games. this one looks good, and I hope the replayability is high.
Is there also a strong solo mode within this game?
Good luck with developing, looking forward to Libertalia.

    1. There is indeed a robust solo mode with its own deck of cards and rulebook. We’ll talk about it in detail on Thursday!

  43. This game looks beautiful. The original Libertalia has been on my wish list for some time, and so glad to see a new version is coming out by Stonemaier. Looks like this will be getting checked off the wish list earlier than I had anticipated! :) BTW – the art looks amazing – I know some people are saying they prefer the original art style, but I do love what you did you brighten it up and make it more inviting.

  44. I love the original game and it will never leave my collection. I hope this does well for me too! I can’t wait!

  45. So very excited for this game! I never played the original, but heard great things about it, and I am excited to play this fine-tuned version! I also love the theme and art! It looks like another hit! Well done!

  46. I know you’ll probably touch on this, but have you made this so 2-player is really strong now? I love the look of this but never game with more than 2 so not sure if this is for me.

    1. Stay tuned! Jamey will reveal 2-player details soon. We’re committed to making our games work well at every player count, including 2.

  47. So happy this game is getting reintroduced to a new audience with updates and a solo mode, especially. Can’t wait 😄

  48. I’ve enjoyed the original Libertalia for several years. It is an underrated Citadels-like, and easily the best of the genre. I’m very happy to see this coming out with a fantasy theme. And airships! What’s a Stonemaier game without airships?

    1. Jamey mentioned during the livestream that Feuerland has announced they’re publishing Libertalia: Winds of Galecrest in German.

      1. If Feuerland publishing the German Version, does it still be available here in the Stonemeier Preorder Shop, with 20% discount, or does this mean, for the German version one has to order from Feuerland, with their conditions? Sorry no experience in this…

        1. We only sell the English versions of our games on our webstore. Feuerland will know more about where they’re selling the German version, but it’s safe to assume it will be available at German retailers.

    1. Jamey mentioned in today’s livestream that the Libertalia realm is ready, but the exact details of its release aren’t decided yet. Stay tuned!

    1. Thanks! We’re excited too. There will be just one edition, though the first printing will have print numbers on them.

  49. This is so exciting! I’ve enjoyed many plays of the original Libertalia, but am super stoked to venture into this reimagined Stonemaier world when the time comes!

  50. Sounds great!
Just to check though – I think the charitable support sign up should be later than 14th Jan?

  51. Excited to see this new Stonemaier game as always. This is a new and interesting direction, creating a new, revised edition of an existing game. As always, I’ll be expecting an amazing gaming experience!
