House Selection

Thematic personality quiz

Enter the futuristic universe of Red Rising, based on the book series–specifically, the first trilogy–by Pierce Brown featuring a dystopian society divided into 14 castes. You represent a house attempting to rise to power as you piece together an assortment of followers (your hand of cards). Will you break the chains of the Society or embrace the dominance of the Golds?

Red Rising is a hand-management, combo-building game for 1-6 players (45-60 minute playing time). You start with a hand of 5 cards, and on your turn you will deploy 1 of those cards to a location on the board, activating that card’s deploy benefit. You will then gain the top card from another location (face up) or the deck (face down), gaining that location’s benefit and adding the card to your hand as you enhance your end-game point total. If at any point you’re really happy with your hand, you can instead use your turn to reveal a card from the top of the deck and place it on a location to gain that location’s benefit.

If you enjoy Fantasy Realms (combo-building), Libertalia (hand management), and Gugong (removing and gaining cards), we think you’ll enjoy Red Rising. You can follow along on the Facebook group and on BoardGameGeek.

Components

  • 112 character cards (65x100mm; 21 of the Collector’s Edition cards have gold foil)
  • 6 asymmetric House tiles (65x100mm blackcore)
  • 1 board (410x284mm)
  • 1 wolf-head tray and lid
  • 60 helium tokens (red gems)
  • 60 influence tokens (plastic cubes; these are metal cubes in the Collector’s Edition)
  • 1 Sovereign token (this is gold-painted metal in the Collector’s Edition)
  • 1 crescent moon first-player token (this is gold-painted metal in the Collector’s Edition)
  • 1 custom Rising die (22mm)
  • 6 fleet tokens (plastic ships; these are metal in the Collector’s Edition)
  • 6 card holders (only found in the Collector’s Edition)
  • 1 scorepad (50 pages, double-sided)
  • 6 reference cards (65x100mm)
  • box (296x296x70mm; the Collector’s Edition box has gold foil, spot UV, and individual numbering)
  • insert (cardboard in the standard version and custom plastic with lid in the Collector’s Edition)
  • 1 multiplayer rulebook
  • 1 Automa rulebook
  • 30 Automa cards (25 cards are 57x87mm and 5 cards are 65x100mm)

There are a total of 123 big cards (65x100mm) and 25 small cards (57x87mm). While the insert and card holders are designed to fit sleeved and unsleeved cards, we don’t necessarily recommend sleeving these cards. You only shuffle once per game (minimizing wear and tear), the cards are made from durable linen-embossed ivorycore, and the reflective nature of sleeved cards may impede your ability to see icons/text from across the table. Also, if some of your cards get worn down after hundreds of plays, just fill out our replacement parts form and we’ll help out with those cards.

Add-Ons

  • If you have the retail version of Red Rising, you can upgrade it with many of the Collector’s Edition components via this pack.
  • A natural rubber playmat is available here.

Reviews and related media can be found here. The game is also available digitally on Tabletopia. A handy web-based scoring app is here.

Release Details: The Red Rising Collector’s Edition is available from Stonemaier Games (fulfillment centers in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada). Thanks to everyone who signed for a preorder launch notification by February 17, Stonemaier Games donated $10,724 to the ACLU.

Product Details: The SKU of the retail version is STM350; retail release date: May 28, 2021). Red Rising is heavily language dependent, and is available in a variety of languages from localization partners.

We’ve made a set of painted metal cubes/ships (instead of the anodized metal in the Collector’s Edition). They’re available here.

Retail version on the left, Collector’s Edition on the right. There are no gameplay differences between the two; the Collector’s edition has metal tokens instead of plastic and 21 gold-foil cards instead of no foil, and it includes card holders, a plastic insert, and an individually numbered box.

  1. Hey there, Red Rising is one of my favourite games. But I had a rules question.

If a card like a Grey allows you to gain a card from the location but ends your turn, do you still get the location bonus from where you took it from? Or is your turn only playing the grey, getting the card, end of story?

  2. Greetings. I recently bought the game, but it only has 107 “character cards.” I would like to request the missing pieces, but I don’t know which cards I am missing. Could you help me?

  3. Is there any word on a potential expansion for Red Rising to include characters from books 4-6? Really really looking forward to new cards, but would also love an added element to the game to make it slightly more complex as well!

    1. Thanks for your enthusiasm, Brandon! We’re exploring some options for the future of the game, and we’ll announce here, in the Red Rising Game Facebook group, and in our enewsletter if/when we have news.

      1. Yes! This is me and my friends and families favorite game! We would love an expansion! We’re addiction!

  4. Would you consider doing some type of art print/poster or something from the game? Love the art of this game and seeing all these characters come to life but would love to see them all on a single piece of art

    1. I’m so glad you like the art, Steven! Typically that’s the sort of thing we’re happy for the artist(s) to do if they’re so inclined. I’ll talk to Miles about it.

  5. Hello, congratulations on the success of the game! On the other hand, there are some balancing issues that are felt from the first games. Will there be a next rebalanced edition soon?

    1. Thanks! The balance of Red Rising is just as much about the choices players make as it is the cards. The original version is the official, balanced version. But you’re always welcome to share thoughts on specific cards in the Red Rising Facebook group if you’d like to delve into strategy with other players!

  6. […] Red Rising (2021) is entirely about futuristic human factions, much like Illuminati. Yet the card backs are […]

  7. Are there any plans in the future to release an extra deck with characters from book 4 5 6(and eventually also 7)? Would love to have tose in the game. Maybe a whole expansion?

    1. Thanks for your interest! We’re currently working on something for Red Rising (early stages). Hopefully we’ll have something fun to announce in the future if it works out! :)

  8. Hi. I have a couple of questions about the game.

    1) Is there a limit to the number of cards you can have in each of the 4 columns?

    2) If there is a card you want right at the top of a column, and there are a lot of cards below it, is there anyway of ever getting that car? It seems as though the more cards you have in a column, the harder it’s going to be to get the card you want!

    Thanks

    1. Sorry, 2 more questions.

      1) If you have a card like Judge, that blicks other people from stealing or banishing your cards, can you use Judge as many times as you want?

      2) Sevro – Banish the card directly under this one. You may reveal the howlers to instead gain that card.

I assume you need to have The Howlers card in hand to do that?

      Thanks

      1. 1. Yes, as long as the Judge is in your hand, you can reveal it to block.
        2. Yes, revealing cards refers to cards in hand.

    2. Thanks for playing, Peter! There’s no limit for the number of cards at a location. If a card gets buried under other card, there are some types of cards with deploy abilities that can move it to the top of the location so you can gain it.

    1. There might be one in the future! Jamey was waiting for book 6 and will decide if he wants to do one based on books 4-6. I’m optimistic still!

  9. I am having trouble locating the painted cubes. I had put a notice in last year to be alerted when the come available. We like the metal cubes but colors for mixed up on fleet track sometimes. Are they no longer for sale?

    1. Hi Joel!
I believe the only way to purchase the painted cubes is through the recently restocked “Red Rising Upgrade Pack”. Previously this pack had the unpainted cubes but the recent restock used the painted metal cubes! I just picked it up and I highly recommend it!

      1. I have the original collector edition, but don’t need any of the upgrades except, it would be nice to have the painted cubes.
Is there a way to order them separately?
I just don’t want to order cards or card holders that I will never use…..

        1. We actually revised the card holders in this pack so they’re better to use than the originals. We don’t sell just the cubes–our fulfillment center is working at a really high capacity, and we can’t ask them to remove some components from a product and ship only those components.

  10. Currently unpacking my Red Rising Collectors Edition. I own everything for Scythe, Viticulture and Wingspan which has been an expensive hobby. Red Rising is considerably cheaper and I got it on sale so wasn’t sure what to expect quality wise. The production quality is outstanding for this game. I feel like I owe you money considering how cheap I got it. Thanks again for a high quality great looking game.

    1. Thanks Peter! We’re always looking to offer a good value for our games, and I’m glad that’s your experience with Red Rising. :)

  11. My family has loved this game SO MUUUUCCHHH!!!! We’ve played it over 80 times and own two copies! I even created a spreadsheet of our scores.https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jd7Cj0H0gq4kB9nxnLkF3qKU8LUv6Ud5OWJJUrnQG0M/edit?usp=sharing

Due to the news of the second group of red rising books being a quartet, has that delayed the possibility of an expansion? I know many people would be overjoyed to see an expansion with The Reaper, Alexander, and more! I love your work!

    1. I’m so glad you’re enjoying Red Rising! I’m not entirely sure about the next step, but it’ll start with us reading book 6. :)

  12. I sleeved my copy and now they are getting bent from bands. Is there any card boxes that would work you can suggest. I used ryker games sleeves also

    1. My copy came with plenty of resealable baggies – one of them is large enough to contain the full character deck.

  13. How do you get in contact with Customer Support? My game came with 2 blue token packets. I’m missing a copper packet of tokens.

  23. Hoping this game continues to expand. Hoping to see maybe a mini game of just the institution. Where you get to draft your own house and random castle. House Mars for life.

Also hoping to get more updated cards with different art work. Maybe little less cartoony and more card foil and other add-ons like in pokemon upgrade packs.

    1. Agree more pack and foil for other cards. I want holograms and other card designs. I want to open upgrade packs like other card game packs.

  24. Absolutely love this game! I know a rulebook is well-written when I can picture the game being played in my head before I’ve even taken a single turn! Great job!
The only thing I could ask for is a little more guidance on resolving End-Game Abilities, but that’s nothing I can’t google. This one will be on my table for a while…

  25. Hi Jamey,

Any up date if the cubes for red rising will be able to purchase same day the Tapestry expansion gets released in Canada.

    Thanks,

  27. Hello Jamey.
This is a great game. I am a big fan of the books, so it will definitely stick.
I have a question out of pure curiosity.
Who are the characters at the back of the board.
I recognize Victra, Sevro and Cassius (not sure about Casi) dueling.
Who are the bunch of people on the right of the board?
    Thanks in advance.

    1. P.S. I am also curious what was the thought process of not placing Darrow and Mustang, the smartest and the best man and woman in this universe, on the back of the gameboard? :)

      1. There’s some debate about who’s on the back of the board, but I see Octavia, Aja, Mustang, Ragnar, and Mickey.

  28. First off this game is now my favorite game all time! So thank you for making it.

Is there a way I can buy the plastic insert for the box? I got the none collectors box and it feels wrong to just have the stuff sitting in the box.

    1. Thanks Kyler! I appreciate you asking, but that component is only available in the Collector’s Edition (it’s not available ala carte, and in general we try not to ship plastic inserts and trays by themselves for reasons of environmental impact).

There is a simple red cardboard insert included in the retail version.

    2. Personally, I’m not a fan of the CE insert, as the metal cubes/ships fall into the big opening at the bottom if the box is ever held/stored vertically. And the holes for the character deck and automa cards make it difficult to get the cards out without damaging the bottom cards. The wolf slot for the helium3 is super nice though. Love the game!

  29. Hi Jamey,
I truly love this game and everyone I have played with loves it as well. I skimmed some of the comments and it looks like there will likely be an expansion after some time (great news!). And I have become very interested in reading the books now. So, thank you for adding new content to two of my favorite hobbies :)

my current high score is 495! (i am quite proud of that).

    1. I love the multiplayer part of this game, but I am having an issue with starting the Tull Au Toma game. How do you determine which side of the Luna bonus card to show at Luna? Like in your example, if the card on Luna is C, then how do you know which to pick? As each side of the card both have a B and a C. On one side, it seems to tell me to put the Institute and the other side tells me I should display Mars. I would appreciate any help. Thank you.

      1. I’m glad you’re enjoying the game! For the Luna bonus card in solo, there are four possibilities. Either A, B, C, or D is showing at Luna (you placed them randomly in the previous setup step).

        If it’s…
A: Flip the bonus card so it matches the location where the D card is.
B: Flip the bonus card so it matches the location where the C card is.
C: Flip the bonus card so it matches the location where the B card is.
D: Flip the bonus card so it matches the location where the A card is.

The rulebook describes A/D as a pair and B/C as a pair. Dusty has a great video explaining the solo rules here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ft9w3Tk4Wsc

  31. Just wanted to say I first learned and played this game on Tabletopia and have now ordered the CE. Thank you for offering your fantastic products on the platform!

      1. Also, fun fact, I’ve attempted to play Fantasy Realms using a reduced version of the Red Rising deck (removing all cards with bonuses related to the institute, helium, fleet track, and some others) ignoring the deploy actions, and it actually plays pretty well! I enjoy the quality and art of the cards so much, playing this short game with 2-3 players is quite fun. Thanks again.

        1. That’s really neat! Fantasy Realms doesn’t have deploy abilities–when you played this way, did you still trigger deploy abilities?

          1. No, we ignored the deploy abilities and end-of-game abilities, just focused on core points and bonuses, only used about 64 cards out of the deck, played a three player game and the final score was something like 211-206-165

  32. If the opponent I’m targeting with Roque has Pax, when does Roque’s ability Trigger, and if I choose Pax, am I able to banish him. (Or does Pax block that?)

    1. It helps a lot if you type out the abilities–I don’t have them memorized. Pax’s ability would trigger after Roque has made the random selection IF the Roque player doesn’t name Pax (if they name Pax and pick Pax, Pax is banished).

  33. A longshot, but is it possible to purchase the insert from the collector’s edition as a separate/a la carte item? I ended up getting the regular version as I preferred the colours and contrast between different player pieces of the plastic versions. However, I really like the insert from the collector’s edition. And thank you for creating inserts that fit sleeved cards. I always sleeve with ‘premium’ thickness sleeves, and it is great to see when inserts accommodate them. I’ve had to throw out some otherwise wonderful inserts to fit my sleeved cards (looking at you, Lords of Waterdeep and Parks).

I just saw in the comments the plan on releasing metal ships and cubes matching the colours of the plastic ones. I will definitely be getting these. Would there be options to ‘upgrade’ our first player and Sovereign tokens to metal as well to switch out all of the plastic?

    1. Thanks for asking, but no, we’re not going to offer the insert ala carte.

We considered adding the first player and Sovereign tokens to the painted metal token set, but we really wanted to offer the set as a very low-cost replacement option for Collector’s Editions owners, and adding those tokens added a surprising amount to the cost. So the only way to get them will be from the upgrade pack currently on our webstore.

      1. I assumed as much regarding the insert, but thought I’d check. I’ll check out the upgrade pack. Thanks for the reply.

  34. Hey Jamey! Loving the game so far. I was wondering if it would be possible to purchase the plastic cubes and ships?

    1. Thanks Mike! It isn’t possible, but we are making painted metal cubes and ships (metal, but the exact same colors as the plastic tokens).

        1. Yes, they’ll be the exact same color as the plastic tokens (clearly differentiated colors), but with the nice weight of metal (consistent with other Collector’s Edition tokens like the first-player token and Sovereign token).

          1. Hi Jamey, thanks so much for going the extra mile and fixing the CE metal cube/ship color issue. I look forward to picking up the painted versions when released, as I love the game but have a hard time with the current colors.

I also had a quick question about the numbering on the front of the CE box. I stopped by my LGS, saw the regular edition, and was a bit jealous that it didn’t have the off-white rectangle with the digital numbering. I’m sure the color and font may be restricted by the manufacturer but I was just curious why you didn’t put it on the back or side, to preserve the awesome artwork and graphic design on the cover. I have Tapestry and I like that it’s more hidden, due to the lower placement and color of the box. Anyway, I love your games and the visual design, and it was just an honest question to get an idea of what goes into the decision for placement. If it’s as simple as you want people to know it’s a numbered edition when they see the box, fair enough!

            Thanks again!

          2. Thanks Reid! We try to strike a balance between the visibility of the individual numbering (if it’s too hidden, what’s the point?) and maintaining the integrity of the art. Same for the other information on the box. We have looked into putting the numbering on the side of the box since that’s what you typically see on your shelf, but the special printer that stamps the unique numbers only works for the top of the box.

      1. Hey Jamey! Any plans to include these new painted metal cubes and ships in the collector’s edition going forward? Or will this strictly be an optional add-on? Thanks in advance

        1. Dave: I think we’re just going to stick with the one printing of the Collector’s Edition (focusing instead on the retail version). But the painted metal tokens will soon be available as an optional add-on purchase for anyone.

  35. Jamey, I am a avid Scythe player and now I am an avid Red Rising player (also an enormous fan of all the books). Please continue to make incredibly awesome board games. Also, please make an expansion when he releases book 6 and make all my dreams come true.

  36. Hi Jamie, the game is beautiful, hoping to get it played tomorrow but really excited. Is there any chance that sleeves will be offered or possible reprints available to correct the GOLD bleed thru on the backs of the cards? This is the thing I can see being the biggest issue that could determine my decision of which action to take. Thx.

    1. Samuel: The word “gold is only apparent if you’re looking for it at the right angle in the right light, and even then it’s very faint. While it’s something we’re aware of and will work to prevent in other games, it is not a problem that needs solving in Red Rising.

  37. Hi Jamey, just want to know will you sell extra score pad for Red Rising in Stonemaier webstore?

    1. It’s possible we may sell it ala carte at some point if people request it enough, though for now hopefully the included scorepad will last a while and the web app will help too. You can also download and print extra sheets using the link on this page.

  38. Hey Jamey you probably have already answered this question, But I was wondering when local game stores will start getting copies of the game?

    1. Sorry, Glenn, I thought I put it on the page above: The retail release date is May 28, so just a few weeks from now. :)

  39. Loving the look of the Gold cards (Collectors Edition) and I’m having a hard time wanting to play with them in the deck… well sorta, I’d love to put them behind some glass and make an art piece to put in the game room.
Wondering if there will be an option for buying the non collectors version of the gold cards?

    1. Thanks for asking, and I’m glad you like the look of the cards! The closest to that we’re prepared to offer is an update pack that includes the cards, metal components, and card trays. So you’d be buying a bit more than what you’re asking, but better than a full game.

  40. Loving the game! My friends and I are not sure how Orion’s card is supposed to be added up at the end of the game. I believe it is representative of the VP of your position on the fleet track. So for Orion on a position of 10 on the fleet track, I would get 43 VP.. is that right? They think i should receive a value of 0-10.

    1. Your friends are correct (0-10)–that’s why we included those numbers as the range on the card. :)

  41. Hi Jamey,
After 20 plays of the game we are still loving it! It will soon become one of our three most played games during the pandemic. Thanks!
On small thing is that after a number of games the house tiles start feeling a bit repetitive (I don’t really know if that’s the right word) and we have noticed that we do not focus as much on their bonuses as we did at during our early plays.
Have you considered a mini-expansion with a few more tiles? Maybe the minor houses that are not included in the core game? Or maybe alternative attributes or bonuses for the available ones?
    Cheers!

    1. 20 plays–that’s awesome! And you’re right, the house tiles are a bit plain, though that was intentional: We wanted players to focus on the characters, not their house ability. That’s design space we might explore a bit more in an expansion (we haven’t put any thought into an expansion at this point, but we’ll start looking into it after book 6 is released).

  42. We got our copy last week and the wife and I having been enjoying the heck out of it. It plays quick and easy. Great for sitting down to multiple plays, which I always enjoy. Sometimes the cards just don’t come your way, but when they do oh boy does it feel great. Really enjoying figuring out the combos and utilizing your house to it’s best. Was super stoked about the box art, easily my favourite looking box in my collection now. Super proud owner of #8 of the first printing! #8 seems to be a reoccurring lucky number of mine, so I was pretty pleased to see I got that copy! Anyways, just wanted to drop a review and thank you for another great game in the collection! Is there any chance we see an expansion on this one in the future? Love your work! As always I am looking forward to more! Cheers!

    1. I’m glad to hear you two are enjoying it, Garrett! We haven’t put any thought into an expansion at this point, but we’ll start looking into it after book 6 is released. :)

      1. Wouldn’t be an expansion, but I would buy the heck out of a Red Rising themed space conquest/4X game…. just sayin’…

  43. I just got my collectors edition and all of the gold cards are duplicated and is missing some cards, (like darrow). What can I do?

    1. It sounds like your copy was mispacked with duplicate decks. Please fill out our replacement parts form so we can send you the missing cards

  44. Hello
I just received my game so excited. My dancer card has a red streak on the card back is there anyway to get a replacement

  45. Quick rule question: Does the Artisan Chef’s endgame bonus “Ignore any lost points from golds” only refer to deficits for not meeting conditions printed on gold cards or can it also mean “ignore any lost points for having gold cards?” Example: I have a black card that says I lose 5 points for every gold card in hand. I have one gold card in hand (or a grey card I am counting as gold). Do I lose 5 points, or does having the Artisan Chef negate this effect? TY.

        1. I think what is being asked is, does the card negate negative points on gold cards, or does it negate negative points caused by gold cards? Or both?

          1. It refers to end-game scoring conditions on Gold cards. For example, The Jackal says, “-30 if with Darrow or Octavia.” If you have The Jackal, Artisan Chef, and Darrow, you ignore that ability on The Jackal (you don’t lose 30 points).

  46. Hey Jamey, I just got my copy yesterday and already played it with my friends! It was so amazing and I loved the illustrations on the cards! Great work! I did have a question though. My fiancé used the card to look at my hand, name a card, and then try to pull it and banish it. Of course, she selected the jackal, and pulled it … So I was wondering if I would remain shorthanded on my card count since she banished my card, or if I would draw a new card? Sorry for such a long question! Thank you!

    1. Thanks Tyler: Unless it says that you get to draw a card, you don’t get to draw a card. There are lots of cards in the game that let you gain extra cards, though; plus, your fiance probably lost the card she played to make that happen. :)

      1. Awesome! And good point on her losing the card. I figured that’s how it was payed since you tried to keep the card limit at the end similar to managing the houses in the books! Thanks for letting me know! Great job on this one!

  47. Kia Ora again from New Zealand, received my collectors edition copy a few weeks back and is even better then I was expecting, we’ve taken it in to our local board game cafe and shared it with the owner there, he loved the look ALOT! The only Stonemaier game they had was Scythe l, but have told them how awesome all your games are and are going to look at getting some for the shop for people to enjoy!

Very very happy with the quality of the components of gameplay and the abilities of the characters go so well with the book! My wife and I really really love it, we also at the same time purchased Between two Castles of Mad King Ludwig and is our favourite game right now! The team building factor is great for families who struggle with this and we have played that many time with our friends again a great introduction game for new board gamers!

Again thank you thank you thank you for your fantastic games! I LOVE THEM!!!!!!!
also cant wait for the expansion for between two castles!!!!

    1. Just got mine in the mail… for starters Immaculately packed and shipped with Care.. The the actual game?????/ OMG everything is amazing, you guys truly knocked this out the park !!!!

      Thank you so much !!!

  48. Hi,

Played a few games now and loving it, but was wondering why there is no variant deploy rule for Loan Shark when playing with Au Toma?

Surely something could be made to work, seems a shame to leave her out – lol

    Regards,

    Fin

    1. I was thinking of house ruling something like this – unless play testing showed this to be too unbalanced?

Au Tomo gives you 2 Helium to immediately to immediately take 1 turn out of order (but cannot gain Loan Shark – use location tiebreaker if necessary) before you finish your turn. If Au Tumo only has 1 Helium she gives it to you without taking a turn. Otherwise, gain 1 Helium from the supply.

    2. IIRC our reason for removing the card was that the most sensible thing for Au Toma to do is to give the player 2 helium because she’d almost always gain more than the 12 point swing of giving the player 2 helium and unless the player _really_ needed the helium it would almost always be a bad play.

Additionally, the rule would be fairly complex compared to the rest of the very streamlined Automa rules. It’s just for 1 card, so it would come up rarely enough that you’d likely have to look check the rules everytime the card comes up. We felt that this was too high a price to support a single card that would almost always be a bad play for the human.

      1. Thanks, I see your point. Especially if playing on more difficult scoring scale and the additional card gained by Au Tomo falls favourably (odd or even), come end game scoring……

    3. We received our CE last weekend, and have played about 10 games. We couldn’t be happier. It is a great game, that plays quick, even with multiple players. We like the art work, quality of the pieces and theme. The only planned add that I am planning is to print a couple of pieces to prevent the card holders from tipping over. I really like the card holders but multiple times each game, it seems I lay my cards out for everyone to see.

  49. Do you think you’ll make the die available for sale? I’d like each player to have one to speed up the game.

    1. Thanks for your request, Kirk. On occasion we make components like this available ala carte, though the logistics of doing so for 4 different fulfillment centers are rather complex, so we’re very selective about the components we choose for this purpose. While it’s unlikely, we will consider it for the rising die in the future.

      1. I’d buy one – especially given your previous comment about ‘possibly in future printings’ aligning the icon on the die with the board icon for Mars.

Maybe even as an add on purchase when buying another game possibly or a Red Rising expansion (lol)…

  50. Just got my copy of the Collector’s Edition this morning, and I couldn’t be more happy with the quality of the artwork and the pieces! I’m really looking forward to gathering some friends tonight to play!

  51. I’m in Canada and received my tracking number on the 14th but Canada post does not recognize the number. I think maybe they have not received the package yet but has anyone else noticed this?

    1. Hi Jeff! I’m in talks with the Canadian fulfillment center about this issue and they let me know we should see movement on your tracking number this week. Thanks for your patience!

      1. Hello I am having the same problem it’s says my order is not found but I have the tracking number

    2. I am in Vancouver, mine was also on the 14th and did the same thing, but I think it’s a Canada Post issue.

The first day it said it couldn’t find it then on the 16th it said a label was created. Nothing over the weekend and all of a sudden its in Richmond yesterday and delivered today. So hopefully you get yours soon!

    3. I’ve had this happen with the fulfilment centre in Canada with other Stonemaier deliveries. I think they notify you of shipping at the point of their input, which can be a week or more before they actually contact Canada Post for pick up. It’s pretty typical, but I start thinking it’s on its way when they email, but just a tease..

  52. After 15 plays, I finally managed to win a game with only Reds (and the support of an Obsidian and a Brown)!

  53. Mine was just delivered. I had combed through the pictures while waiting for it to arrive, but it’s hard to convey how awesome the artwork is. The components are top notch as well. Can’t wait to play!

  54. Finally! The plastic insert does fit sleeved cards. (I used the Gamenegic card sleeves) Thank you for making this happen which is pretty much rare. I have thrown out many other game plastic insert — they never quite fit sleeved cards. Again, thank you!! I hope this will continue with the future games. Two Thumbs Up!!

      1. Canada isn’t first. The ships arrived in Australia and the UK first, so those fulfillment centers started shipping first.

        1. And I don’t know if you planned it but I am grateful.

Too long have the deliveries of the world been dominated by the Americas.

Too long have the deliveries to the Americas been dominated by US.

          Congratulations my Commonwealth brother’s

          Finally the Commonwealth prevails!

          *Sarcasm intended*

On a serious note, I am happy that other parts of the world are seeing the game first. Almost every Kickstarter I have backed always seems to fulfill the states first and a place like Australia has to wait an additional 8-10 weeks on their order if not more.

  55. Will a future printing change the icon for Mars on the Rising Die to the one in the rulebook? If so would you consider making a print run of just the die for people to buy separately similar to the extra dice sold for Tapestry. I like the idea of each side of the table having their own and would definitely buy it. Thanks!

    1. Thanks for the idea! While we are going to fix that at some point, I’m not sure if we’ll make it an ala carte item.

    1. We heard today that they’re packing games this week, so you should get your shipping notification this week or next week.

        1. The rest of the world (not Europe, Canada, or Australia/NZ) will ship from the US over the next few weeks, as we’ve said all along. :)

  56. Well…not sure I’m too upset about the delay as I am now just about finished with the 3rd book (started them just before the pre-order opened).

Question though have US pre-orders started shipping yet?

    1. Thanks for your patience, and I’m glad you’re enjoying the books! US Champion preorders haven’t started yet–we’re waiting for the trucks to arrive.

  57. I wanted to preorder the game, but apparently there’s no Russia in the countries list (( Is it an error or do you not ship to Russia?

    1. I’m sorry, but we’ve had such little success shipping to Russia that we had to stop offering that. If you have a forwarding address elsewhere, we can ship to it!

  58. Jamey!!! I would like to have a possibility to buy a second automa deck with opposite color of letter cards and additional Luna bonus card. Need more automas!!!

  59. I have preordered the game few days ago. Do we know how long it takes to ship it? Or is this done at a different pace for “non-Champions?” Is there a shipping confirmation that goes out via email, or will the game just show up on my doorstep? I am in the USA.

    1. Hi Daniel! We’ll be shipping Red Rising preorders in the US throughout the month of April. When your order ships you’ll get a tracking email. Since you just recently preordered and you’re a non-Champion, it’s likely you’ll recieve that tracking email in the latter half of April. Thanks for your order!

    2. Thanks! First we need to ship the thousands of preorders received earlier in March, and then you’ll get your shipping notification in late April.

      1. Hello Stonemaiergames. Happily received (UK) a copy at the beginning of April. Beautiful game. First play through I was all at sea, but since I have read the 1st two books. Makes so much more sense now! I’ll now be able to get it on the table of my games group. The Automa plays really well too. Next play through I’ll see if I can break the Golds dominance as currently they score heavily in my play throughs. Keep up the good work. My games group has wingspan and Scythe too. What would u recommend from ur catalogue as my next purchase. I am not a huge fan of worker-placement type games. (terraforming mars my fav tbf.) many thanks

        1. Thanks Jay! Many of our games involve worker placement, and you’ve now played most of those that don’t use that mechanism. :) But there is Between Two Cities and Between Two Castles, both of which are tile-drafting and tile placement games.

  60. Hey Jamey, I recently bought a new home and will likely be moving before the US games are shipped. Is there any way to change the shipping address for my order?

  61. Please can I ask if the $59.25 price for the UK includes VAT as you are shipping from your UK distribution centre, as you would know all UK consumer purchase must include VAT and unlike trade is not reclaimable? Many thanks!

  62. When will the shipping to the middle east begin? (getting a bit jealous of people who are getting their game :) and I can’t wait to play it alreadyyy)

  63. Has anyone else received the wrong edition of this game? I got sent the retail edition of Red Rising instead of the Collectors edition. I checked my order and it was definitely for the Collectors edition. I was so disappointed because I wanted to crack it open to play immediately, now I need to wait for a reply as to what I should do with my incorrect copy!

    1. I’m sorry about this, Bradley! This was a very limited issue affecting only a few orders from our Australian fulfillment center. I know they’ve responded to our emails now and they’ll get you your Collector’s Edition to you as soon as possible. If it’s any consolation, you’re still going to get your copy of Red Rising weeks before anyone in Canada or the US. Thanks for your understanding!

    2. Bradley, you received to my message over the weekend and Joe’s follow up message, right? As we noted in those messages, we’re fixing this, and we’re sorry for the packing mistake.

  64. I have just preordered Collector’s Edition (love these books and quality of SM’s games so it’s a no-brainer), but I have a question about the insert and sleeved cards – did you plan for sleeved cards when designing the insert? What size of sleeves works best with the insert?

    1. OK, never mind. I just read the note about sleeve size and why it may not be a good idea on sleeving them.

      1. As a player that obsessively cares about his games I will say that, although it is true that there is no much shuffling, there is loads of handing of the cards: moving them from the main deck and board to your hand and from your hand (even if you are using the holders of the Collectors edition) to the board, re-arranging the cards in the board, moving cards from the board to the discard pile and recovering them, and in some cases revealing cards form your hand to other players (don’t remember clearly if there if some cards ask you to take or to pass cards from/to other players, I think this indeed the case). SO, in summary, the cards are subject to manipulation and, therefore, to deterioration (although this may happen at a slower rate than when you have to shuffle constantly.
I sleeved my cards, and I can tell you I don’t find any loss of detail or any reduction on readability due to light reflection. And they still look great (apart from being protected from my greasy fingers).
The cards fit nicely in the insert after sleeving them with 60 microns sleeves. Thicker sleeves may give you some trouble.

  65. Got my copy and it’s fantastic, will have to go back and re-read the books
More a question on character choice – was there discussions around having Darrow as a Red rather than a Gold ? I can see merit of both but wondered how you decided on “before” Darrow – or maybe there’s a future special card for a foil gold Darrow which I would go for in a heartbeat !

    1. We didn’t want to spoil anything for those who hadn’t read the books, hence why we made Darrow a Red (but with hints of what’s to come). I like the idea of a special Gold version of Darrow someday!

        1. Don’t worry, it’s pretty much not a spoiler as this is -pretty much- revealed in the opening prologue.

  66. Just got my copy today, beyond excited. Haven’t read a book since I was little, I blame the internet for that, but read the Red Rising series when I saw a Stonemaier game was being made about them and I’m hooked again. Just finished Morning Star the game looks incredible.

  67. Hello!

    Quick question about the rules.

If I understood well, cards with “IF-ELSE” scoring conditions are strictly binary.

If so, a card like the one of TACTUS that shows a 20 points value at the top, and an IF condition at the bottom: “20 if with Octavia, Darrow, or a Pink”; should be interpreted as saying that if none of these conditions are met, then the card gives zero points at the end of the game.

    Correct?

    Thanks

    1. Tactus always gives you 20 points–that’s the core value. He gives you an additional 20 points if you also have Octavia, Darrow, or a Pink in hand at end of game.

      1. Oh (takes a deep breath)! Ok! So, core values always apply, and the end of the game conditions -like the one I mentioned- are binary on their own, adding or subtracting from the core value, but do not substitute it!

The confusion comes from the example of the Garden-Trained Rose, when you said that if she is with a Silver, “you score 14 points in total”. If I understand well now, she will give the player 16+14 points overall. Correct?

Clear now (I think yesterday I cheat in the final scoring with my wife!).

        1. I see, sorry for that confusion. Yes, the “total” I’m referring to is just the conditional points–she’ll always get the 16 points.

  68. Hi there,

Just got my game (after being under transportation for what seemed like forever – thanks Brexit). I was wondering what the all the plastic bags (1 big, 9 smalller) are for? The player cubes already come in bags, and have a dedicated place in the tray, and the cards also have a place there (and probably wouldn’t fit if put in a bag).

    1. They’re for the tokens, though if the tokens come in bags, they’re not needed. Do each of the player tokens come in their own bags?

      1. All the metal cubes and the spaceship came sorted by color in their own bags (10 cubes and a ship pr. bag). The first player and sovereign tokens also came in separate bags, as did the helium tokens. The dice was already in it space in the tray.

        1. Thank you! We’re going to work out a better system so I know about those packaging bags, as I really hate to add unnecessary plastic. Also, we’re switching to biodegradable plastic, so hopefully that will help too.

          1. No worries, and thanks for the quick reply. I’ll use the extra bags for Viticulture, which I ordered with Red Rising. The larger cards get stuck in the wells, and the smaller ones fly all over the box, so I’ll put the bags to good use there :)

Thanks for the great games and the great service, these are my 6th and 7th Stonemaier games, and I can’t wait to play them both!

  69. Hi Jamey! Received my copy of Red Rising (collector’s edition) today and it looks fantastic! However, I noticed a small printing problem on both sides of the box, where the title is written vertically in gold foil. It seem like “Collector’s” is printed in black on top of the gold foil. I assume that this is not only in my copy so I just wanted to inform you :)
    https://www.dropbox.com/home/Public%20Bart?preview=IMG_1189.JPG

    1. I think that might just be your copy, Bart! :) The foil is applied at a different time than the regular ink, though it’s odd that your other box sides are correct.

  70. Two pieces of constructive criticism:

Hi Jamey, we have already had two plays of Red rising and we are loving the game. Getting to understand the strategic depths is not an easy task.

However, we could not help but noticing two minor issues that you may be interested to take into account for future prints of the game (provided you will ever make another print of the Deluxe version).

    1. The metal influence tokens may not be very friendly for colour blind people. Has this issue been raised by someone else? It is hard, for example, to distinguish between pink and red, or yellow and gold.

    2. The card holders are a bit too narrow on their base. This means that they can easily fall back, revealing your hand to the table. If you are clumsy like I am, the likelihood of this risk is magnified. This has happened (to both of us) at least five times in two games.

As you can see, these details are not too serious and do not affect the playing experience, however, I think you may be interested in addressing this in the future.

    Diego

    1. Thanks Diego! Yes, we have a note in the FAQ about the influence tokens.

As for the card holders, are they falling back on their own or when you knock against the top of the cards they’re holding?

      1. Hi Jamey,

Thanks for getting back on this.
The cards fell after been slightly pushed by the hand or the sleeve. Something that not usually happens with other card holders we have, which have a wider base.
I understand it is normal for the cards to fall if they are knocked with a certain force, but you would not normally expect the cards to fall with a minor touch.

        D

          1. True!

However, as I said, it is only a minor issue. Nothing serious. Maybe something that you may like to consider in the future. After all, we learn from experience, and I am sure that after knocking the cards down a few times we will learn to move around them.

            D

    1. I don’t think Matagot is making the Collector’s Edition, but you’re welcome to check with them. :)

  71. Hi Jamey and co.,

Congrats on the new game; seeing and reading great reviews and playthroughs!! There was an email sent earlier for updates for US and Canada shipments, any news for Asia? 😅

    Thanks!

      1. Hey Jamey

I was reading through the update this morning and I was curious, are there no viable fulfillment options in Vancouver for Canada and I would imagine LA for United States?

It always seemed weird to me that fulfillment for pretty much every board game company happens on the east coast, but the freight comes in from China on the West coast. So they have to ship the games from one side of North America to the other, only to ship it back the other way for however many copies were back on the west coast. Seems strange, especially for someone like myself who lives in the Vancouver area thinking why not ship it from the port it arrived at.

I read through some of your Kickstarter articles about shipping and for Canada there was Starlit Citadel, although they used to be a store that turned into logistics and now is Snakes and Lattes? so I don’t know how viable that is or if they are still there. When looking at options for the US I didn’t see anything for California.

I would imagine it may be because most publishers live on the east coast so its easier to deal with people closer to you? But not being a publisher I wouldn’t know so I thought I would ask.

Sorry for the long ramble, super excited for the game, you got me into the book series ,halfway through Golden Son.

        Thank you!

        1. Lloyd: There was a fulfillment company in Vancouver that we used for years (Starlit Citadel), but they stopped providing that service. And we’re based in St. Louis (central US, not the east coast), so GTG (also in St. Louis) is extremely convenient for how we wish to serve customers.

Overall, it’s hard to find fulfillment centers we love, and once we find one, we stick with it. Also, right now the way things are slow isn’t related to ports being far away from fulfillment centers. It’s that there are too few shipping containers, too few ships, and too few people working the docks.

  72. Hi Jamey,

Maybe this is not exactly the best place for talking about this, but I would really appreciate it if you could share your thoughts about your experience delivering Red Rising in the UK.
This is the first post-Brexit game that you massively distribute, when Tapestry and Pendulum came out we still were discussing the terms of disengagement, and I would like to learn from the experience of someone from out of the block.

It is evident that business partners at both sides of the Channel have faced the need to deal with new regulations, controls, and uncertainty. Some of them have managed well, some have suffered a bit, some are still struggling, and some others remain trapped in ideological tantrums. But what about the rest of the world?

As an academic and specialist in operations and supply chain management (notice I did not say expert, my real-life experience in SCM is zero) I am really interested in hearing about the way businesses from Non-EU countries have been affected by this. Have things become easier? Harder? Are you facing more or less controls? Are the bureaucratic barriers tougher in the UK than those faced when trading with the EU? Did you noticed the change at all?

As I said at the beginning, I am aware that this is not the place to engage in such a discussion, but I would appreciate if you can keep it in your head as a possible topic for one of your blogs.

    Cheers!

    1. Thanks for your question! The main impact we’ve seen is slower shipping from the UK to the EU (delivery takes longer than it used to because of the added layers of bureaucracy, as far as I can tell). Beyond that I haven’t noticed much of a difference.

  73. I played it on Tabletopia, and preordered the collector’s edition before we even finished the first game. I LOVE it! And now the books are at the top of my reading list.

  74. Hey Jamey! First off, I love watching your videos and hearing your perspectives on games. Second, I started reading the Red Rising series in anticipation of the game, which I pre-ordered on launch day. I’m currently reading book two and was wondering…is it a possibility that Red Rising could become a series of games that each focus on different aspects of the book series? The first one introducing the class system and overarching ideas of the series and perhaps another game focusing more on the survival of the fittest and battle for the standard/capture the flag aspects of the institute. I think there’s great potential you can explore!😁

    1. Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm and ideas, Amy! At this point we haven’t talked much about expansions/sequels, but we’re open to it.

  75. Quick question. Why is the game only accessible with a premium Tabletopia subscription? it is a bit awkward, TBH.

    1. I’d like to hear more about your perspective on this, Diego. Do you not think the Tabletopia subscription for the games you can play on it? Based on all of the time and money we spent making Red Rising and that Tabletopia spend implementing, does it not have value to you?

      1. Hey Jamey, I think it would be a good ideal to have two tiers of play on tabletopia, a free tier that exposes certain aspects of the game and a more feature rich tier that can be available for premium. Anyone who wants to sample the game prior to buying the physical board game can try the free version.
I am sure creating these two versions may not be easy, just sharing a quick thought.

      2. Hi Jamey,

Many thanks for you reply. I think Ady’ comment reflects perfectly my point of view.

The way the Tabletopia version appears announced in the page gives the reader (at least it had that effect on me) the feeling that it is a teaser, or a limited version of the game aimed at giving the player a similar experience as the “reviews and related media” together with which it is advertised.

I may say it is a matter of expectations. As it appears, it gives (you can put it on the reader, of course) the impression of something aimed for people to try the game. Not a product by itself. It seems to be aimed at “experiencing” the game before someone decides whether getting the game or not. It does not appear as a product by itself.

Maybe, if it was given its own space in the page, announcing that Premium users of Tabletopia can play the game on line, then there would be no room for confusion. The message in that case would be clear: there digital version of the game in Tabletopia, which is accessible to Premium users.

I hope what I am saying makes sense. I got my game yesterday (thanks!) and, given that the Tabletopia version appears together with reviews and other media, I thought it may be worth having a go –after I had read the rules- and get some experience before I sat with my wife for our first game. I got a bit disappointed because I was not expecting a full length game, but a teaser. And I was not expecting having to be a Premium member in order to be able to experience the game. My wrong. Again, matter of expectations.

You are absolutely right, creators and developers deserve the fair reward for their work. I have no objection, for example, to Asmodee Digital. It is clear that they are selling a product, not offering a way to try their games. And that opinion goes also for your Stonemaier’s digital games.

Before saying my goodbyes, let me insist, I have the impression that the place where the link to Tabletopia appears, and the wording, are slightly misleading.

        Thanks for engaging!

        D

        1. Thanks for sharing this. I agree that is unintentionally misleading, and I’ll talk to them about it ASAP!

  76. Pre-order on March 3. Not a champion yet but saw people have already received there copies. I also lost my order number in my email. I do have a receipt of the transaction.

    1. You’re in the US, so as we’ve mentioned in the Facebook group, BGG, and this page, your order will be shipped in April (after all Champion orders in the US are shipped).

  77. Got mine in the UK today!
    Amazing!
Excellent planning and service. Please Jamey, write more about the way you manage your logistics and distribution chain. Many people will benefit enormously from your experience and “savoir faire”.
    Just opening the box!

    Thanks!

  78. Since its nearly 2 weeks since the preorder began, would it be possible to order 3 copies instead of the 2 copy limit currently imposed?

    1. Due to the nature of the Collector’s Edition, we’re going to keep that limit, but we can make exceptions for special circumstances.

  79. Hi all
Just wanted to say that I pre-ordered the game on the 7th March and received it today. Pretty impressed. I wasn’t expecting it until April.
It looks gorgeous. I cannot wait for the weekend when I’ll get a chance to take it for a spin.
Great job Jamey and the team. If it’s anywhere close to being as good as Scythe I will be a very happy camper (well, miner). :)

  80. Like many others here, your game has introduced me to the book series. I started Book 1 the day I ordered the game, and am in mid-book 2 already. Thanks for the book recommendation!

    1. OK, received the CE version yesterday, Mar 23, and played against myself… both scores in mid 250s. Played again today, concentrating on a mostly Red hand with Timony and max Institute tokens – scored 401. It seems like the simplified game mechanic is “gin rummy,” but on super steroids – everything is amped up to 11! Sets & runs are replaced with victory point combos, four suits are now 14, four discard piles in place of one, starting with 5 cards instead of 10, a fun item collection to provide the end-game condition… LOVE IT! Thanks, Jamey and team, this is another great game for my Stonemaier collection. You make games I love playing.

  81. Super excited for this!
Had my friend so hooked on this series, his nose was stuck in Golden Sun as we walked through the streets of Vicenza while studying abroad years ago :D
Great memories. I still need to go back and read Iron Gold + Dark Age!

  82. This game needs a scoring app. Something akin to the wizkids scoring app for Fantasy Realms.

That’s it. Enjoying our plays on Tabletopia. An App would send this way up the charts for us.

    1. Thanks for sharing your opinion! We do have a scoring app in the works, though we designed the numbers to be easily added for those who don’t use the app.

  83. Hi James, i’m writing from Turkey and i wonder if theres gonna be a Turkish Collector Edition? Thank you.

      1. No worries! Currently we don’t have a Turkish partner for any version of Red Rising, but feel free to tell Troy Games or Goblin Games you want them to make it. :)

  84. hi, i’m writing from Mexico and i wonder if theres gonna be a Spanish Collector Edition, just normal edition or none of them

  85. March 8th (Woman’s day), and the sale of the Collectors edition started on March 3rd… I was under the impression the game would have went Sold out by now, but it isn’t, How many copies of the Collectors edition have been produced?

    1. You can see it on the numbers on the front of the advance review copies: We made 15,000 Collector’s Editions.

    1. We’ve advertised it as April, and people in Australia/NZ and Europe might get them a little earlier.

      1. Thanks Jamey! Excited whenever it arrives, I love your announcement to release strategy, best in the business.

  86. Hi!! I ordered the CE (of course!), will we get a tracking number or some way to track the game :)

  87. Hey guys. Got my collectors edition ordered and can’t wait. Just wondering what size card sleeves I’ll be needing and how many. Thanks.

    1. Thanks Tim! All card sizes are listed on this page (the page you commented on), including a note about why I don’t recommend sleeving the cards.

  88. Hi, I pre-ordered mine yesterday. While the individually numbered are spread among all the fulfillment centers, will the boxes be shipped out chronologically within those centers? i.e if my order gets shipped out first, will I get the lowest individual number from that fulfillment center or will it be random? Just curious since I ordered 2 copies if they will be numbered chronologically as one of them is a gift for family and it’ll be kinda cool to have them related haha. Can’t wait to receive them either way!

    1. Car: Our fulfillment centers ship Champion orders first, then all other orders. Within each of those batches, they optimize orders to get as many out each day as possible.

Given that you ordered 2 copies, there’s a decent chance that they’ll both be pulled from the same carton and will be sequential.

  89. Hi, is it possible to get some high quality images of the Red Rising game that can be used for phone or computer wallpapers?

Would be awesome if you can share. I’ve ordered the collectors edition already!

  90. Really enjoying the game on Tabletopia, and the pricing is excellent! Snagged my Collector’s Edition copy and I appreciate the inspiration to read the novels, the first one has me pretty entranced already :)

  91. I didn’t receive a confirmation email? How can I ensure that transaction was complete? Thanks!,

  92. Hey Jamey, very excited to get the Collector’s Edition and play this game, I’m from Mexico, can I preorder? also if a become a champion will I get the 25% discount with the product and also the shipping? Thanks in advance!

      1. Thank you for the reply, it’s not in my Spam folder. At least now I have an order number to reference if I need it. Maybe the email is just really delayed, which would be odd.

          1. That is so weird. I do a search in Gmail and it indeed says it is in my Inbox but does not show up unless I go to the All Mail folder instead of just my Inbox. Thanks for the tip John.

  93. Hey Jamey,

Very excited about this game. I had a quick question on age appropriateness of content. Having read the Red Rising series, I have some understanding of the nature of the Pinks. I wanted to ask whether the art or descriptions on the cards in any way were sexual in nature or involved under-dressed representations of people. I’m asking because my 11 year old is a huge fan of your games and board games in general and I’d like to make sure I’m not introducing something in a game that he may not be ready to process in a mature way. Looking at the art above, things seem pretty tame but I thought I would double check.

    Thanks!

    1. Just ordered and I’m beyond excited! The gameplay looks great. The art and inclusion of all the different colors is ambitious but will be fun to see the different interactions as no two games will be alike. Thanks for also now having hooked me on the series. I read the trilogy in this past week and on book four now too. I’m an addict!

      1. Jamey provided this answer a few days ago:

“I don’t think so–I would say the art is all PG. But feel free to look through the cards on Tabletopia to see if anything stands out to you as potentially offputting (and let me know if so).”

  94. The website is not recognizing my email address as a Champion member. I would love to preorder today.

  95. Hi Jamey,

I am writing with a bit of a bitter/sweet flavour. I have now pre-ordered Red-rising and I am very happy for it.

However, I am disappointed because despite the fact that I had been waiting for the kickstart of the campaign, I arrived more than 118 thousand supporters late. And this is so because I miscalculated the equivalence of the time in a place called St. Louis to the time in the UK.

Yes, this is all my fault (I should have checked twice in the internet). However, you -like many other American companies- have the bad habit of thinking that every one else in the world has the duty to know the local time conventions in the USA. Which, by the way, are exclusive to one single country (or maybe two, I ignore the conventions in Canada). Fortunately we have international time standards which can be understood all around the globe. Having the deference to indicate -together with your local standard- the time of a launch in an international standard –UTC or GMT- will save loads of people the work of having to guess/find out the launching time of a campaign. It reflects profound ethnocentrism and disregard for thousands of supporters outside the borders of your country.

    Diego

    1. Diego: You’re not late at all! Welcome to the Red Rising preorder. I appreciate your feedback, and I will consider it in the future. The time zone listing has nothing to do with how we value our customers around the world–clearly we highly value you because of the regional fulfillment centers we use. It’s simply that Stonemaier Games is based in St. Louis, so St. Louis time is our point of reference. Is that really ethnocentrist?

      1. Not to have a huge discussion, and as a Dane I’ve definitely met people from all around the world who thought the world revolves around them, but with the US being massive they’re allowed to post in their own times, just like we Europeans post confusing times in GMT, UTC, 24-hour versus am/pm – in the age of Google, I just plug in any strange time format and it spits out the local time here in little old Denmark.

To say that a superpower posting their times in their own timezone to be ethnocentric is a (very large) stretch.
I was once scolded by an American in Tennessee because I didn’t know all the states, even though he thought that Denmark and Sweden were a country and a city, and not sure which was which – that’s ethnocentric.

        1. Hi Mikkel,
I will agree with you if we were talking of an average citizen from the United States (like the one in your example), but we are talking about a company that trades all around the world. And that makes a difference. It is mainly about consideration and relates to the basic notions of customer care. On the other hand, UTC and GMT are international standards. My Chinese students, for example, use them to refer to their times at home.

          1. Greetings Diego,

I appreciate your answer, however let’s leave it here so we don’t detail Jamey’s launch.
My original argument stands – that your message is an overreaction and to call it ethnocentric is way, way out of proportions.

      2. Hi Jamey, many thanks for your reply. Very appreciated. I think there is some ethnocentrism on it (although I will never say it is premeditated, and maybe that is precisely the problem, certain lack of attention). When communicating with an international community, like the one that supports Stonemaier games, it is important to keep in our heads that the USA time conventions are only so, that the USA is only one country among more than 200 in the world, and that thousands of people around the globe will struggle for finding the right time equivalence. I call it ethnocentric because, from my point of view, it stems from the assumption that everyone else in the planet is aware of that does CST mean, or knows the time zone where St Louis is. If I had a business in the Canary Islands and I am selling a product around the world, the first thing that will come to my head is that not every one is aware of that is the time in Tenerife.

Leaving that aside, congratulations for the huge success of the pre-launch! Looking forward to get my copy of the game!

        All the best,

        D

      1. It is matter of care and consideration Liem. It is easier for one manufacturer to do the conversion once, than for 20 thousand potential clients to do the conversion by themselves. Some will call it customer relations.

      2. That’s what I did. I’ve been caught more than once when Google has got it wrong in the past though.

UTC is always preferred because most people know their current relationship with it, converting from any other time zone requires two conversations, sometimes an accounting for if either is on summer time, and some assumed knowledge.

The other thing that helps people coordinate on time zones is count down timers etc. That can be even clearer since people aren’t left wondering if they got the conversation right.

    2. I get your POV Diego but it’s a bit of a severe reaction .. a lot of countries don’t translate timings, it’s not exclusive to America.

    3. Hi Diego,

I won’t comment on the time zone issue, and I don’t know how Stonemaeir’s backend works specifically, but I think you might be misunderstanding the order numbers based on your “more than 118 thousand supporters late” comment.

The order numbers don’t appear to be sequential for each product. They ascend, so I do assume that your order is the 118,000th (approx.) but it’s not just for this one product, it’s the 118,000th (approx.) since the order system was implemented across the whole of the store (presumably) years ago.

I wouldn’t sweat the notion that you’ve missed out on anything!

  96. Seems Like I had to pay 17$ shipping to Germany. I thought that Germany is in EU Zone 1 so I thought its only 15$. Is that an Error?

      1. That’s good to hear. So I guess at least the people who Order now get the correct rates. Please consider my 2$ as a Tip in the jar :)

  97. I signed up to Champions a week ago but I can’t log in, it’s saying my email is invalid when I try to log in but it’s definitely my email (looking at the sign up email now)

  98. Launching right as I begin a 3 hour webinar… Hoping I can make it back in time before they sell out :-)

  99. Due to this game announcement, I have been listening to the book. It’s starting to get really interesting. Thanks for the tip!

  100. Are you only doing pre-orders of the Collectors Edition on March 3rd (today) or is the retail version also available for pre-order?

    1. The retail version will only be available from retailers (at least, for a while). We’re only selling the Collector’s Edition.

    1. Hi Ahmed! I just added Egypt to our shipping zones. So you should be able to order anything you’d like now. :)

      1. Having read the first book and knowing what the pinks are, are there any questionable cards that I may not want my nine year old to see? Thanks!

        1. I don’t think so–I would say the art is all PG. But feel free to look through the cards on Tabletopia to see if anything stands out to you as potentially offputting (and let me know if so).

      2. Hi Jamie, just placed my order for 2 copies. Just to confirm I know it is 2 copies per customer. But can I make more than 1 order if want more copies?

    1. Dear Jamey,

Scythe has been my new obsession over the last couples of week. I’m so grateful to you for putting so much love and thoughts into designing Scythe.

I am planning to pre order Red Rising and really hope that it will stand up to the standards of Scythe.

      1. The preorder starts today at 10am Central. Compare time zones to see when it starts in your area!

  101. Hey Jamey! What time will the pre-order for Red Rising be avaliable? I live in Australia so I’m unsure whether the march 3rd date will sync up here and just want to be sure, cheers!

  102. Can anyone tell me what the MSRP for the Collector’s Edition is going to be? I can’t find it on the website. Thanks

  103. Any chance to move to one of the sides (or interior) of the box the individual numbering? I always think it kind of ruins the art / aesthetics of the front cover..

    1. We finished production on the game over a month ago, and it is now on ships heading to fulfillment centers around the world. In other words, we cannot change any aspect of the game at this point.

  104. I believe there is a mistake in the 2nd paragraph. “ You start with a hand of 5 cards, and on your turn you will deploy 1 of those cards to a location on the board, activating that location’s benefit.” You don’t gain the deployed locations benefit correct?

        1. We’re selling the Collector’s Edition. The standard edition will be sold by retailers at a later date after the retail release date (to be announced when we have more data on when it’s arriving).

  105. Hi Jamey, what time will the pre-order be going live on the 3rd? Will Champion members get first priority on pre-orders? And/or will Champion members have their orders shipped before orders from non-Champions?

Also, would you recommend this game for a solo-only player?

    1. Our preorders typically go live between 9:30 and 10:00 am CT. The preorder will be visible and accessible to all customers on our website at that time. Within each region, Champion preorders will be shipped first, followed by non-Champion shipments.

We only put player counts on the box that we think people will have fun with, and Automa Factory spends months making the solo mode robust, fun, and streamlined. If you’ve enjoyed any of our other games solo, I think you’ll enjoy Red Rising as a solo game too.

      1. Thanks Jamey. What timezone is CT, 6 hours behind GMT? (I googled it and it suggests CST)

And I actually have only played one of your games, Wingspan, and not solo unfortunately!

    1. From the description above: “While the insert and card holders are designed to fit sleeved and unsleeved cards (…)”

  106. Hey guys. Big fan here. I’m not currently a Champion member (yet) so do you foresee the collector’s edition selling out super quick for non-members? I will be ordering on March 3rd the minute it becomes available. Thanks!

    1. Even our most popular preorder ever took 30 hours to sell out, so I think you’ll have plenty of time (especially on March 3) to preorder. All preorders are the same (same time, same game, same method of preordering) for Champions and non-Champions alike–the only difference is the price (Champions get a 25% discount applied to their entire order) and shipment timing (Champion orders will be shipped first within each fulfillment region).

      1. Awesome. Thanks Jamey. I can’t wait for Red Rising especially after watching Rodney’s video. The artwork and presentation is incredible as always. Cheers

      1. A clever nod, indeed, but for us who had to edit the rulebook it was more of an “interesting” nod. But hey, I’ll gladly suffer for theme, so I’m all good.

        1. Well, I suppose that being familiar with the novels would have helped in separating the nods form straight out typos 😁

  107. […] Hallertau -1:15:22 Pandemic Legacy: Season 0 – 0:50:48 Pillars of the Earth – 0:19:20 Red Rising – 1:46:00 Renature – 1:05:33 The Witcher : Old World – 1:38:10 Ticket to Ride […]

  108. […] információkat és játékszabályt megtalálhattok a kiadó weboldalán, és a BGG […]

  109. If I need to grab some other items while I’m at it, can I add them to my order of Red Rising or should I make a separate order?
    I’m located in the EU.

    1. Hi Mikkel! You can order any of the products on our store with Red Rising. They all come from the same warehouse.

  110. When the launch on March 3 occurs for Red Rising, if a Champion membership is obtained, can the discounts still be applied ?

    1. If you become a Champion member before you order, you’ll receive all the benefits of your Champion membership.

  111. I’ve been wanting to add Scythe to my collection. Is there any savings (besides the 25% for being a “Champion” member) if I purchase it when I pre-order Red Rising? Shipping or any other types of discounts? No big deal if not, I’m probably buying both anyways. Huge fan of all my previous Stonemaier purchases and glad I can add more to my game library!

    1. The sale price will last through March 6, but we’ve already made the first printing, so the preorder will last until we sell out. Perhaps a day or so?

  112. I am not a “bling” type gamer. But I do love how the gold foil on those cards (I wish all the cards had it to be honest, I do know the reason why is only the gold and understand SM wanted the to stand out from the rest). I know you have an upgrade pack. Would there be an option to just buy the foil cards?

  113. Hi Jamey,

So I just watched Rodney’s Watch It Played video on Red Rising and noticed there were already 24k views of it. This made me wonder if there could be a correlation between the number of views of pre-launch videos and the number of actual units sold. Although I suppose even if there was it would be too late to use that information to help make the decision of how many units to produce… Well maybe it could help inform you for a second print run.

Just wanted to share this thought with you since I remember you discussing production estimates during Tapestry’s unveiling.

Best wishes to you, SM, and your loved ones (I enjoy Caturdays, especially the videos)!

    1. Thanks! It’s neat to see that level of curiosity about the game. We do track some of that information for each of our preorders to detect patterns and decide when to start a reprint. :)

  114. If I become a Stonemaier Champion today, will I be able to take advantage of the 25% off for the Red Rising pre-order?

    1. Yes, as soon as you become a Champion, that discount applies to everything you order from the Stonemaier Games webstore for the next 12 months.

      1. Right, the 25% (off the product and shipping) replaces the previous discount–we sent an announcement about this to Champions last week. :)

        1. Previously ordered Tapestry directly from SM when the pre-order launched. Bit disappointed to have signed up to the champion program a week ago to find out afterwards South Africa was removed from the list of countries you deliver to =/

          1. We’re happy to ship to a reliable forwarding address, Andre, but far too few of the games we’ve shipped from our webstore to South Africa in the past have reached their final destination. Of course, if you prefer to cancel your Champion membership given this unexpected information, just contact us at contact@stonemaiergames.com and we’ll cancel/refund it.

  115. Hello! Lizzy here, question on the metal components that come in the game, do you know what metal they are made of? Just ask bc i am allergic to alluminum and nickel and don’t want to have to wear gloves when playing! 😅

    1. They’re made of zinc, though they’re coated with a protective substance so that you’re not directly touching the metal. Hopefully that works for you!

      1. Thank you for replying, much appreciated! And yes, that should be good… zinc is one that I don’t believe I have an adverse reaction too. So yay!!! Thank you again!

        1. I’d recommend planning for $75, and you can be pleasantly surprised when the price (game plus shipping) is lower. :)

          1. Are you comfortable saying how much ($) the diff between the CE and standard will be? If you prefer not not it’s ok, I understand.

  116. Very excited about the game. Considering becoming a champion, however i am confused regarding rewards. On one place is saying $10 of each order the other 25% of all web store orders. Could you please confirm which option is correct.

    1. Hi Marcin! Thank you for considering being a Champion. Champions receive 25% off every order (recently changed from $10 off). If you see “$10” mentioned anywhere still, let me know where and I’ll get it corrected.

      1. Joe Aubry in the home page, the area that says become a champion still says $10 off that is probably what confused Marcin.

  117. I am beyond excited for this game. I had no idea this was happening until Rodney posted Watch It Played’s most recent video. Thank you so much for bring this series to tabletop. The original trilogy left me in pieces. Beautiful work by Pierce Brown and I’m hopeful for an equally epic adaptation.

    1. I’m not completely up on Matagot’s media channels but they have announced they are doing the French version! You can see them listed as a publisher with the French box image on bgg.

    1. Yep! The Watch It Played video will be available on February 17, followed by reviews and playthroughs on February 22.

  118. I’m from the Philippines. I do want to get the Collector’s Edition once released, but I have no clue where to place the order. There some website I have visit, I believe? What is it? Do I have to be a Champion be able to order the Collector’s Edition? I wonder what the shipping fee would look like. 😬

  119. Looks awesome. Definitely want that Collector’s edition. Signed up to newsletter but will be checking in to make sure I don’t miss this. Love this series. Game looks great.

  120. I started playing boardgames just recently because of the pandemic and my first two games were viticulture and wingspan, top quality games. So congratz on that!
Any chance this will be sold in Portuguese?
Will buy it in english if i have to anyway :D

    1. Thank you, and welcome to the gaming community! Currently there is not a Portuguese version of Red Rising in the works, but that could change.

      1. There is a Brazilian edition in the works (by Grok), which will be Portugese. I’m not sure how difficult it will be to get your hands on that edition if you live elsewhere, though.

  121. I admit, I’m feeling a little disappointed with Stonemaier on this one. I had not read the books before, but I am always AMPED for a new title from SM, so I immediately got it from the library. And I am…very surprised. This was not what I expected from Stonemaier after its impressive BIPOC action plan (hair color as a racial allegory? really??). The book is…heartbreakingingly misogynist. (I nearly put down the book altogether at 1/4 in, when we describe a new prominent female character as, “beautiful, even more beautiful than Eo.” Which, for context, is the protagonist’s wife who fridges herself for man-pain in the first 30 pages. She is the one with the ideas, but for some reason it never occurs to her or our protagonist that maybe she should do something, not her manly husband man type.)

For a company with only 1-2 women designers amongst its titles, and no women or BIPOC staff, it is not surprising that no one had a problem with the source material. It’s not that it’s bad so much as…really disappointing that this is the ideas and material that SM wants to work with right now. And I’m feeling quite torn on this one.

    1. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts about the portions of Red Rising you’ve read so far. The first book is somewhat uncomfortable in its misogyny and using women as plot devices/motivations for male characters. Like a lot of authors, Pierce gets better at this important aspect of writing (and life) throughout the series, and I was happy to see that as a reader.

Misogyny is not something I take lightly—it’s an area of my life where I’ve made mistakes and actively seek to listen, learn, and grow. At Stonemaier games, we actively work to not objectify women (or men) in our games—you can see this in the art samples I’ve shared for Red Rising. You’re right that our small team of 3 full-time employees are all men, but our broader team of artists (including Jacqui Davis, the lead artist for Red Rising), dozens of our lead playtesters, and a number of our shareholders are women.

While it’s not specific to misogyny, we are supporting the rights of those who are underrepresented and marginalized in our donation to the ACLU as part of our Red Rising release efforts. Currently that donation is over $10,000 thanks to everyone who has signed up for a launch notification.

      1. Thank you so much for your thoughtful reply. I will definitely give the rest of the series a try then. I have always been and continue to be much impressed with SM’s commitment to action and the donations connected with the last 2 launches. Thanks for continuing to be a company I an thrilled to remain connected to and a proponent of.

        1. Thank you! I hope you feel free to share insights and perspectives like these in the future, as I truly want to make Stonemaier games as welcoming and inclusive as possible. We’re going to make mistakes, but we’ll also learn along the way from comments like yours.

    2. Please continue to read the series – you might find it rewarding. You might, however, find there are bottlenecks that make it difficult to continue. Darrow only grows as a character (through Golden Son) as much as the author allows, but he does grow. The writing becomes less chauvinistic, but I wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t give it the lead to prove that point.

  122. Feuerland has stated that they won’t be publishing this game due to the lack of awareness in Germany. Do you have any other publisher/localization partner for a German edition?

          1. Can we as customers do anything to make a German Collector’s Edition more likely? And how might we get to know when the German partner has signed on and who it is?

          2. Jan: It definitely helps if you tell your favorite German publisher that you’re excited about the game! When a partner in Germany is selected, they’ll announce it when they’re ready. :)

    1. We only sell the English version of our games, but many of our localization partners will offer Red Rising in other languages.

      1. Will you share who the partners are for other languages? I see that there are already questions for french or german versions but I would be looking forward for a version in dutch if possible.

        1. Here are the partners who have announced their involvement:

          • Grok/Ludofy (Brazil)
          • Matagot (France)
          • Phalanx (Poland)
          • Sternenschimmermeer/Starlight (Korea)
          • Ghenos (Italy)
          • Lavka (Russia)
          • Maldito (Spain)

  123. Hi Jamey!

Just wanted to say that I was already excited for the next Stonemaier game (I’m a big fan of the others and especially Tapestry), but this announcement also convinced me to pick up the Red Rising series and so far it’s spectacular! I’m only on the second book so far, but I wanted to thank you for introducing me to a great series and now I’m just even more excited to get the game!

      1. Will we be given an exact time pre-orders go live? Also what’s the fastest stock as sold out before on a game do you know?

        1. Yes, I’ll update the page this Wednesday to note the day and approximate launch time (typically 9:30 am CT) for the early March preorder. The order in which orders are received will have no bearing on delivery order, though, as our fulfillment centers will first ship all Champion orders based on shipping optimization. The fastest we’ve sold through our entire stock during a preorder was for Tapestry (it took around a day and a half).

          1. Thanks Jamey, will look out for it. As a Champion in the UK (fullfillment center here?) I hope I get lucky!!

  124. I mainly will be playing this 2 player so really looking forward to the variability. I imagine it will make each game feel a bit different. Excited to get this ASAP! Thanks Jamey! :-)

    1. In a 2-player game, you’ll probably get around 25% of the way through the deck. That’s great for variability, but rough if you’re looking for a specific card. We actually have a solution for that built into the game that I’ll discuss in a post this weekend. :)

      1. I’m looking forward to this as our biggest issue during playtesting was holding on to a penalizing card looking for its complement. The game could be very swingy at the end as players shed cards seeking to divest from point holes!

      2. Jamey, did you post this solution anywhere? I didn’t see anything in the more recent blog posts. Thanks in advance, this look like a great game.

  125. Hey Jamey and Alex,

Game looks fantastic, just have a couple questions about some design diary posts.

The Whites: it looks like 2 of them in the photo have the same ability but worded differently. Is there a reason for this?

Fleet Track: Jamey, you seemed to say that after the 7 space, points decrease but in the photo they are still going up.

Tad confused on those two things but everything else looks incredible and you know I’m getting that collectors edition ;)

    1. Marc: You’re right, the points still increase, but the increments decrease.

As for the Whites, the cards’ deploy text have the same meaning.

  126. Jamey, can you comment on the difficulty of Red Rising? Based on the short description you provided it sounds very simple. I’m hoping for something more complex which it might be. Is there anything you can say about the learning curve or challenging decision points in the gameplay? Thanks!

    1. Teaching and learning the game, from my perspective, is very easy. The depth of the decisions comes from the 112 unique cards, whether they’re in your hand, on the board, in the deck, banished, or in opponent hands–which card do you deploy (and when, and where) and which cards to you keep and build around. There’s also the next-level factor of really paying attention to your opponents (see my notes about interactions in today’s design diary).

      1. Thanks. I didn’t see the diary but I’ll definitely have a read. If you didn’t answer this in there can you mention if the 112 cards are tiered? Are any cards in subsets to come out before others or are they all open? (i.e. Agricola has a semi-random order, London has an A deck, B deck, C deck)

        1. We try to keep it simple with our games: All cards are in the same deck. As a result, setup and cleanup for Red Rising only take a few minutes.

  127. Jamey,

Thank you for the great options. Just really got in to the board games since the pandemic. My kids really love all of your games (ages 12 and 14) and we are really looking forward to this one. Nice that there is a story for them to read up on prior to the game coming out. Keep up the good work.

  128. Does it have scaling based on player count? I only get to play games at two, so it’s essential that they play well. All my SM games do (though Scythe and Tapestry are a bit looser on the interaction – which isn’t a bad thing, we can go for it if we want, or else just work on our own stuff).
Also, which are the interactions we can expect here?

    1. There’s a limit to the first run, simply because we’ve already made it, but if there’s demand, we’ll make more! :)

  129. I’m on my third year of teaching Red Rising to my Dystopian Literature class. They love it and go out and buy the rest of the series to finish it!

  130. Every new update I get more and more excited – I cannot wait for this! Just got the first Red Rising book on my kindle – not a fast reader but hoping to have read some of it at least by my first game 😅

  131. Hi there! There would be possible to order the spanish version of the game to be delivered in the US? Thanks!ª

  132. I’ve only been in the hobby for a year, but it was immediately evident that Stonemaier Games was worth tracking closely. The quality, content, transparency and professionalism has been a breath of fresh air. I’ve even been inspired enough to apply some things I’ve learned from their processes in my life. I’ll definitely be getting the collector’s edition with zero hesitation.

  133. This looks amazing! Seems just like my kind of game (from first impressions) based on a fantastic book, now I’ll have to read all the others after the first one. Quick question though about the solo mode, I haven’t seen in the component list any automa cards so was wondering how it will work? You’ll probably tell us later anyway but I can’t help it if I’m excited!!! :)

    1. Thanks Sarah! We’ll reveal how Automa works very soon–it definitely has its own components, like in our other games. :)

    1. We’ll release pricing on preorder day. And yes, we ship from the UK to Europe (delivery duties prepaid, so EU friendly).

  134. Looking forward to this one Jamey, regardign the CE version, when will this ship? This year? Be good to get it as a birthday pressie (Oct) or as a Christmas treat.

    1. Steve: Definitely, as noted under “release details” above: The Red Rising Collector’s Edition will be available to preorder from Stonemaier Games in March TBA, followed by fulfillment over the next few weeks.

  135. Kia-ora (Maori for Hello) Jamey, I am from New Zealand and am a HUGE fan of all your games and I appreciate you and your philosophies on life very much! It started when my wife and I wanted to start playing interesting board games and accidentally came across Scythe 2 years back in a book store and we loved the look of it so much we bought it! We knew nothing of you or Stonemaier Games but now we own all the Scythe expansions and extras apart from the Metal Mechs, (my wife wont let me buy them. but maybe one day hmm.) Stonemaier Games is my favorite board game designer and now we almost own all of your games bar a couple! I will continue However to save up and buy them all. Viticulture being one of my faves, oh and also Tapestry, I’m waiting on the expansion to arrive but am amped to get it. Of course Scythe is and always will be in my top 3 favorite games EVER! I was extremely excited to receive Oceania expansion for wingspan also!

I would like to thank you for the joy that your games have brought my family and friends, when our friends who don’t know or understand that board games can be this great show interest in this hobby of ours we always introduce them first to your games because of the Incredible quality and attention to detail, the artwork is always fantastic and games are so unique and enjoyable and many of them have gone on to purchase your games. I anticipate your monthly e-newsletter to see all the exciting things you are doing. I recently became a CHAMPION and don’t know why I didn’t do it earlier but I have now, so I’m happy about that!
I would like you to know that I really appreciate the work you do and all the inspiration you send out into the world! Because of this game Red Rising I have now purchased the 1st book and my wife and I are reading it together, AND I LOVE IT! which is huge cause I’ve never read a full novel book in my life, just very interesting picture or information or kids books but wow such an incredible book and now I am so excited to get my hands on a copy of this collectors edition board game. Thank you thank you thank you Jamey and all the wonderful people you work with to bring these beautiful worlds to our tables!

Great big virtual high fives from the other side of the Globe

    1. Nikora: Wow, thank you so much for your comment! This is a great way for me to start my day, and it means a lot to me that our games have brought joy to your household. Thank you for becoming a Champion. And I’m glad that you and your wife are enjoying the the first Red Rising book. :)

  136. This looks like it could be right up my alley. I had a bookstore clerk suggest this series once, but never looked into it. Seeing this last week peaked my interest more. Fast forward to today and I’ve got the first book on it’s way in the mail and I’m seriously considering preordering this.

  137. Well this is an AUTO BUY. Excitingly waiting for it.
Now… can you make a game based on The Stormlight Archive too please =D

    1. Not a Stonemaier take on Stormlight Archives wouldn’t be fantastic (it absolutely would) there is already a game called “Call to Adventure: Stormlight Archives” that has some really great artwork.

  138. I’m curious why you would start the pre-order before actual game review videos are released. I’m not saying this applies to this game, but in the movie industry, if there is an embargo on move reviews up until the day the movie actually comes out in theatres, it usually indicates the studio is trying to hide a bad movie and they are worried about not reaching their target financial goals. I would think that releasing videos from multiple reviewers before the pre-order would actually create a most successful launch. I apologize if this question has already been asked.

    1. The reviews for the game will start on February 22, as noted on the Media page. The preorder won’t start until March. Where are you seeing otherwise?

      1. Understand that my concern originated out of fear of the game maybe not being good, which is tied to my absolute love of the book series, which made me very excited for the game. Forgive me my goodman…..

  139. OMG! I don’t even know what game mechanics are used here but I don’t care – i am preordering it. This is a game based on one of my favorite books designed by one of my favorite designers. I’m glad you are a fan too Jamey. A game in this universe had to happen and I am beyond excited that it is done by you.

    1. Tyler: There might be some very small Easter Eggs, but given that it’s a licensed property, I avoided putting some of the typical Stonemaier hints in it.

  140. I first heard about this on the Tower’s 2021 round-up and had to stop everything to research whats happening. I then watched the vlog from two years back which would have broken my heart did I not know of this game coming out. This is my number one favourite collection of books of all time, and knowing that not only is there a game coming out about it, but that it has clearly had so much love poured into it is genuinely squeezing my lungs with excitement. The only thing worse than no game would have been a RR theme blandly pasted onto a game. Per Aspera, ad Astra Jamey and Alex

  141. Jetzt grade ziemlich schwer tiefer in die Materie zu kommen wegen weniger Kontakten, aber ich habe auf jeden Fall einiges zu lesen

  142. I follow Stonemaier Games religiously and when I saw that RED RISING was going to be the next game option I was on Cloud 9!!! I am a book reviewer and in all my hundreds of books I have read Red Rising has been and is still my favorite book of all time!! I am so excited to see it in board game form. I have been dying for it to be made into a movie, maybe this will be a start…

  143. I wonder, with limited contacts allowed in our country (Belgium), will the game play well at a 2 player count? I mean, will it scale well and not function as a boiled down version of a more tense 3 or 4 player game?

    1. We’ve designed it to play well from 1-6 players. I’m biased, of course, but I’ve had a lot of fun playing it with 2 total players (me and my girlfriend).

      1. That’s good to hear! We’ve already had a lot of fun playing viticulture, scythe and wingspan with 2 players. Looking forward to the game! I read that the game will be published in other languages, does this also include the collectors edition? Or is this exclusive in English?
Thank you for replying so soon and greetings from Belgium!

        1. The Collector’s Edition isn’t exclusively in English–each of our localization partners had a choice. So far, they’ve all chosen the standard version, but you’ll be able to buy an upgrade pack from us.

  144. Whereas I agree with your intention Jamey, I don’t agree with the politics of the ACLU and don’t wish to support them… there are far better organizations for donation related to your cause. How can we be notified for pre-order without donating?

      1. Thanks for clarifying the focus of your intention Jamey… To answer your question, and I understand these organizations are not what you have in mind this time; Local/regional politically neutral organizations can be incredibly effective in helping those in need… such as the Durham Rescue Mission, Changing Hearts Ministries (they help adopted children overcome great difficulties) and, locally to you, Mission: St. Louis

        1. Definitely, we support a wide variety of charities through our annual charity auction. In this specific case, given then theme of the game, we’re looking at civil liberties and equal rights/protections, which are human issues, not political issues.

          1. Well Jamey, I’m glad you’re not sending $ to Durham Rescue Mission, since I’ve heard they kick people out for being gay… and as an LGBT person myself, I’m very happy to see that you support civil liberties, both in word and deed.

          2. Thank you for bringing that to my attention, AMP–I was not aware of that. The ACLU is definitely the only organization who is receiving our donation in two weeks.

        2. Intentionally inserting bigoted organizations into a conversation about equal rights after being told EXPLICITY that the purpose is to fight against that kind of hatred is exactly the kind of trolling no one needs.

[JAMEY has edited this comment, the spirit of which is fine, but the delivery of which goes against the community guidelines for this site.]

          1. I truly hope you have more evidence than a single reddit post from a car dealership event that lends the idea that a rescue shelter kicks homeless people out for admitting being gay. Come on now?!?! That goes against everything a rescue stands for. They are a religious organization who stands by their value system yet still loves all people.

Jamey, keep doing great work with your games but I hope you don’t take everything written on here as gold…no pun intended. ;) Looking forward to hearing more about this game.

          2. Derek: My focus is on Red Rising and the ACLU. I haven’t considered these other organizations, but if I were to consider them at any point, I would research them first.

          3. Yep! Great to hear.

Side note, I have not read any of these books and about a year ago a friend of mine told me this was his favorite book series and that I should definitely look it up. Of course I didn’t and since your announcement I have since bought the first book and eagerly wait till I crack it open tonight. If this book is as good as most mention I’ll get the whole series done by the time my copy lands on my doorstep.

  145. Hey Jamey,
love your games. I am wondering about the “Red Rising is heavily language dependent”. From the few cards that are visible on the pictures this seems to be a “normal amount” of language on a card game for me.
Anything I am missing? Most people in my playgroup speak/read english good enough to play most games. I usually only buy story-heavy games with lots of reading aloud parts (Arkham Horror being one of them for example) in German so its more enjoyable.

Would you suggest jumping in on the Collectors Edition with this information or wait for a German edition because it might get to difficult for my other players?

    1. David: We declare a game to be language dependent if it features text that cannot be shared with other players. Red Rising cannot be played open handed, so it is heavily language dependent. But if your group speaks English, you’re fine.

  146. […] date de sortie de Red Rising n’a pas encore été confirmée par Stonemaier sur le site officiel. Automne 2021 pour Essen (en live ?) […]

    1. Of the standard version, yes; the Collector’s Edition will only available from us at the normal per-unit price. We’re not selling the standard version (that’s only for retailers to sell to customers).

    1. We have limited advance copies, and they go to reviewers who are available to share their thoughts so customers can be well informed before our preorders open (with that content remaining available months into the future for the retail release and beyond). The Dice Tower isn’t available for such timeframes, so we just send them copies after the primary shipment arrives for them to review as they wish.

Also, because of the number of people who are at least curious about our new games, we like to provide that special early exposure to smaller and up-and-coming reviewers. I adore the Dice Tower, but they don’t exactly need extra exposure, given their 200k+ subscribers. I’d rather shine the spotlight on, say, Black Board Gaming (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWrHsTahil–iMQCf8eRYTA) or Tim Chuon (https://www.youtube.com/c/TimChuon).

      1. I appreciate you giving exposure to smaller reviewers, it is always nice to find new channels to watch (I really like the content BlackBoardGaming puts out). At the same time when it comes to brand new games prior to preorder I find myself drawn to the bigger reviewers (Dice Tower, Rahdo, ManvsMeeple). Due to the sure about of content they have put out it makes it easier for me to know if I will like the game based on their analysis, as I am able to get an idea of where my tastes align or differ from theirs. Reviews are always subject and you really need a good understanding of a persons tastes in order to know how to evaluate their review. This is much more difficult to do with smaller reviewers that have a limited about of videos out from which to create a baseline. Additionally if every publisher picks new reviewers each game they put out it becomes problematic as it drastically increases the about of content I need to absorb to get a good read on the reviewers so I can know if it is something I will like.

Anyway just my 2 cents. I understand you have to make calls that are best for your business, I appreciate the work you do for the industry as a whole.

        1. I totally hear that! We mostly send our advance copies to the same reviewers, so I’d recommend checking out the content of a few of them to see who you connect with.

  147. YES I’ve been waiting for something like this ever since I fell completely in love with Red Rising and Pierce Brown’s writing. I’m so freaking excited

  148. That’s some great news! I’ll go read the books while I wait lol, you guys make such good games I wanna know what this one is about

  149. Great. Just perfect. My brain is melting with all culture overload. I am half-way through Dune which I want to read before I play the game or see the new movie. I play GH:JoTL on the table and TM Prelude on Steam and now you come with this game that will be an instabuy but also is based upon a book series I never heard of but that I know must read. Thank so much for that Jamey and Alex … ;)

  150. I may have missed the link (reading this while I should be working). Is there a rulebook/manual I can read through to get a more in depth idea of the gameplay?

    1. Yes, you’ll be able to read through the rulebook when we post it. Right now, if you want to learn about the game, we’re revealing what’s in the game in the design diary section.

  151. Is this game suitable for 3 players? I’m new to board games so I don’t know much about them. It says 1-6 players, but I would expect that some numbers are probably better than others. I would be playing with exactly 3 people.

  152. I just finished the series (at least the first 3) ! I can’t wait for this to come out! Probably the first game I’ll buy every upgrade released for! Thanks for the awesome games so far! Wingspan was our first purchased game and between two castles is one of our all time favorites :)

  153. How will the collector’s edition be different from the standard edition? Is the collector’s edition time-limited or is it just that it won’t be in distribution…?

    1. The two versions have the exact same gameplay; the CE has some upgraded components that I’ll share soon. Like anything we make, the if we sell out of the Collector’s Edition and there’s enough interest for us to make more, we’ll make more. :)

  154. Wow Jamey. For a long while I thought this game was off your line-up due to design challenges. I even asked during a live QnA and you mentioned it was not in development. So as a huge RR fan I’m super excited this is coming true! May I ask what the MSRP will be for the collectors edition?

    1. Thanks Nick! We’ll reveal the Collector’s Edition and standard version prices when we launch the Collector’s Edition preorder in March. :)

  155. Will it be an open preorder or are there only so many collector’s editions available? These will be highly sought after I’m sure – we’ve all been dying for a game in this universe. Will you be shipping to Canada in the preorder phase?

    1. Hopefully we printed enough Collector’s Editions to meet demand! We’ll announce the preorder date soon and it will be open to everyone. Then we’ll ship the games in March and April.

  156. Will we be allowed to order a maximum of 2 copies during the preorder? I would like to purchase my friend a copy and save on the shipping costs if possible. Thanks!

  157. How many expansions are in the works (or does a game not get designed with expansions in mind) and will there be enough space in the base gamebox for set expansions?

    1. In terms of game design, we haven’t thought about expansions at all–we’ve been focused on providing the best experience for the core game. If we make an expansion someday (perhaps based on the second trilogy), there’s room in the box for it.

  158. Congrats on finally getting a Red Rising game made. Your original video got me into reading the first book and now I’m a huge fan. I can’t wait to play this. Hopefully it will hold us over until book 6 comes out.

  159. Red Rising is my favorite book series, and I’m blown away that they made a game about it! I am a bit underwhelmed by the box art though. It seems a bit much, and sort of cheapens the look for me. Regardless, you bet I’m grabbing one when they’re available!

    1. I think the box arts fantastic. It has all the colors of all the social classes and red is getting stood on. It’s eye-catching I don’t want it looking all super serious and people just think it’s a some 8-hour war/ diplomacy game.

      1. As long as we have copies! At most, the preorder discount will apply through March 6, but it’s possible we’ll sell out before then. We’ll then start gathering data to justify when we should make more.

  160. Amazing to see the donation to the ACLU instead of a promo or other marketing hook for sign ups, really impressed.

  161. I can’t wait to get more info about this game! Dystopia is one of my favorite themes.
Good job to both of you!

  162. Hey Jamey, I am excited to see this one and check out the series.
(One technical note for the website, the link on your right sidebar for Red Rising links to Pendulum.)

      1. I think David is referring to where the text reads “Red Rising” (top sidebar box; immediately above the link text “Rules & FAQ”) – this points to Pendulum.

  163. Amazing, Jamey! You did the thing you said you weren’t sure you could do! You made the Red Rising game and got the Rights! So looking fwd to this game. I’m a long-time fan of the book series. I have a signed copy of Morning Star that I got from a friend at Del Rey who worked w Pierce Brown. Very excited!

  164. These books are some of the best YA sci-fi out there, and this is a heck of a first licensed IP for Stonemaier Games. Wow!!

    1. I did. Quality is good. I think it’s the same speaker for all five books, although I think 1-3 are the best. 4 was a slog and I took a break. Just now starting 5. I recommend

    2. I stumbled across the first book on audible just as it was released. I didn’t know what to expect but for me, the first three books were thoroughly enjoyable. And the story arc nicely came to a conclusion.

The fourth book in the trilogy was meh (I do not want to seek crass).

    3. Books 1-3 are narrated by the same person and are excellent. Books 4-5 are narrated by a collection of people and the reviews are mediocre. Main reason why I haven’t picked them up yet even though I love the original trilogy.

    4. I listened to the audiobook versions. Books 1-3 are pretty good, not exactly what I was expecting but not bad. 4 they added in other voice actors, I thought those were good but in book 5 they have changed the voice actors for at least one of the characters (I’m still listening to this one and I haven’t heard all of the voices yet) but 4 was just kind of so-so, number 5 I’m having a hard time paying attention to it.
Be aware there are some graphic depictions of people dying/being killed/tortured so while the overall story is good there’s some pretty gory bits that made me gag a little (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing).

      1. How come there is no Darrow gold card? I thought he isnt revealed deliberately but he only exists as a red

          1. I mean he becomes a gold fairly quickly in the book, it’s like what 1/4 or 1/3 into the book? Will he be included by chance into future expansion? There are plenty of characters who could be added along as well(mostly from 4th and 5th book but still)

        1. Because he is a Red! Unless things change loads later in the series, Darrow is a red. If you are born in a country or region, say Canada, not because you move to another one you stop being a Canadian!
