Scythe Metal Mechs is an individually numbered, foil embossed boxed set containing 1 metal mech (inkwashed zinc) from each faction*. The mechs are protected by a felt-lined insert with a clear plastic lid for display.
The first print run was comprised of exactly 4000 sets. We will only make more of this product if back-in-stock requests and future printing requests indicate enough demand to justify the minimum order quantity (for manufacturing) of 1000 units.
Due to the extremely high cost of producing these mechs–compounded with our desire to keep the price down as much as possible for Scythe fans–we are only selling the mechs directly from our webstore and via localization partners (see list below).
These mechs were the featured reward in our 2018 charity auction (a special edition numbered 1-40 instead of 1-4000).
There are some fun fan variants for using the metal mechs on this BoardGameGeek thread.
Release Details
- Available now!
- For those looking to replace their normal mechs with metal mechs, we offer faction-specific silicon base snaps on our webstore.
FAQ
- What should I do if my mechs are broken? Most likely a touch of glue will fix it (any type of glue). If not, please simply fill out our replacement parts form, specifying which mech is broken, and we’ll send you a replacement mech.
- Are the base snaps really sold out? Yes, unfortunately we really are. We can’t make more unless we can justify a minimum order quantity of 1000 sets, so that is unlikely. If you accidentally ordered more sets than you need, please let me know!
- Are we making more metal mechs? I honestly don’t know. I could only justify making more if back-in-stock requests and future printing requests indicate enough demand to justify the minimum order quantity (1000 units).
- Will we make metal characters and airships? We have no plans to do that.

These look amazing! If the interest is high enough, is there a chance the second wave of these would become available through US distributors and local game stores? Thank you!
Sean: Thanks for your question. The metal mechs is available to consumers, distributors, and retailers directly from us at the $50 price. Due to the extremely high cost of making them, if we sold the traditional way to distributors, that would be the same price we would need to over, and it would result in the MSRP jumping up to $100, which is much higher than we think consumers should pay for them.
Would postage to the UK be reasonable or out of this world?
It will be the cost the FedEx charges us to ship from St. Louis to the UK.
After filling out a previous survey that assessed interest, I was somewhat surprised that I didn’t here about this directly through a heads up email rather than the Dice Tower newsletter.
We aren’t selling anything yet, hence why no newsletter has been sent.
With the Rise of Fenris out in full release, are there any plans to fill in any gaps that might arise while exploring the campaign?
Nevermind, just noticed the spoiler link.
What time on Nov 2 are you planning to launch? Will those of us on the other side of the globe be punished? ;-)
I don’t like to punish anyone (though keep in mind that there are people in every time zone, so no matter what time I choose, someone is going to be sleeping). I don’t know where you are, but if you’re in Europe, I recommend that you order from our localization partners, not us, as shipping will be much more cost-effective. The US launch will be around 10:00 am CST.
Thanks for the reply, Jamey. I’m in Australia, and I’ve never heard of Let’s Play Games until now. They seem to insist on setting up an account by contacting them first (not simply via the website), and I’m concerned about having problems with that system. Anyway, I’ll wait and see what the time of release is for Champions. Thanks!
Thanks Matt! I’m hoping to have a direct link to Let’s Play by the time we start selling these so you can compare your options.
‘Good Games’ is the name of their retail chain of stores, which I suspect you’d recognise, here in Australia. Check with your local store.
‘Good Games Distribution’ – the product ordering and warehousing side of the business – changed their name to ‘Let’s Play Games Distribution’. (In part I believe to indicate that they offer their distribution services to more than just their own and franchised ‘Good Games’ branded stores.)
[…] Full Metal Scythe Stonemaier Games is releasing a set of metal mechs for Scythe. Each is “an individually numbered, foil embossed boxed set containing 1 metal mech (inkwashed zinc) from each faction. The mechs are protected by a felt-lined insert with a clear plastic lid for display.” They’ll be available November 2nd. Source: https://stonemaiergames.com/games/scythe/metal-mechs/ […]
Awww man, I really want to replace the whole set of mechs in my copy of Scythe for Metal Mechs… But I can’t afford the $200 tag.
I wish we could sell them for less! They’re incredibly expensive to make.
How much will the plastic snaps cost? It’s gonna take some major budgeting to get four of these to play with, so i’m trying to get an exact amount. Thanks for makning these!
They’re $15 for a full set to cover 4 mechs for all factions.

Was this at Essen Spiel 2018 or did you mean next year? If it was there, I am starting to feel regrets I am reading this now
Yes, Feuerland had them at Essen 2018.
For champion orders of 4 mechs…are the plastic snaps added automatically? Or do we have to indicate we want them? I had a set in my cart, but it was charging me the $15 price, and your email from the 25th said they’d be added free of charge for champions that bought 4 sets…so I took them out of my cart and crossed my fingers….lol Now I’m second guessing myself….
If you’re a champion ordering 4 sets of mechs, please do not put the snaps in your cart. We’ll handle it on the back end.
Excellent, i did it correctly. Clearly I just needed more coffee this morning. Thanks Jamey!
I ordered this morning but didn’t see that the snaps are included for champions, so I added and paid for them along with the mechs themselves. Any chance that can be remedied? I don’t want to cancel and re-order in case they’re already sold out! Thanks
Sure, I’ll take care of that.
I also ordered 4 sets and the bases I got free shiping by putting in my champion code. I paid the $215.
Thanks Adam! You didn’t need to add the base snaps (we’re adding them when we pack the Champion shipments). I’ll fix your order.
Wow that was Great, Fast service… I got my email saying I got refunded the $15 less than 2 hours after I posted here! Kuddos to your customer service. Thanks Jamey Stegmaier!
I was so hyped I ran through the process too, wothoit reading the Champion perk added to this purchase. I’m in the same Situation as Charlie Collins. Also, let me take this minute to thanks for making this game reach epic levels of detail, and craftsmanship.
I’m also a champion and I did the same and paid the $215. I think I had missed the initial notice about this though.
I’ll take care of it, Dave! Alfredo, I took care of yours too. :)
Hello
Do you have a Canadian partner
Not for the metal mechs.
These do look fantaasric. Can’t wait to get my hands on them! Lol.
My original comment seems to have poofed into thin air, but I did see the answer to my question first. Thanks Jamey!
Ah well…there’s my response now…you think you’ve updated your page…but nothing like adding a new comment to ‘for realz’ update the page. Haha. Happy Halloween all!
[…] Metal Mechs […]
Worldwide released on November 2… I don’t find any European partner in the list above that sells today the metal mechs set on their website :( does anybody have a link to help me ? Thanks
Many of the mechs are still in transit to Europe, so those partners are waiting until they have them in stock. Feuerland’s website is being updated this week, but they should have the mechs there next week.
Excited for my metal mechs! Any idea of when they will be shipped within the continental US? Just curious :)
They haven’t quite arrived at our warehouse yet, but they should arrive early next week, and we’ll ship them by the end of the week.
Don’t mean to be a bother, but I’m just wondering if we’re still on track for the metal mechs to be shipped out by the end of this week? :)
If you’re a Champion, yes. :)
I just ordered a complete set of 4 with the rubber disks. Can’t wait. Any plan on getting metal characters? If so, can you include a rubber disk with each, It’s too bad the disk set is only 4 each, I wouldn’t want to have to pay another $15 for 36 more disks.
Thanks John! I appreciate your interest, but we’re just going to make metal mechs.
Thanks for the quick response. I hope they sell out so quickly that you change your mind.
I forgot to ask, how are people planning to transport these in their Legendary boxes? I currently use small plastic crayon boxes for the plastic mechs, not sure if putting them in together might scratch the metal ones. Anyone have any thoughts as to the best way to transport?
Thanks John. :) I think the metal mechs will hold up pretty well, though the best way to transport them might be in their inserts.
Are the metal Mechs the same size as the plastic one? I have an organizer and am curious if they would fit in the organizer the same as the plastic ones.
Devin: Yes, they’re the same size–they’ll fit in the organizer.
Heyya Jamey, just a quick question: I have ordered 4x metal mechs so that I can use the metal dudes in a game instead of the plastic ones. Are the coloured snaps included automatically on these orders. I’m not sure if I am confusing “champion orders” with a more generic “4x order”. Just want to be able to easily differentiate the little metal folks without painting ’em up and not sure if I need to order them specifically <- hope some of this makes sense
Hi Nathan, the metal mechs and the base snaps are separate products that are sold separately.
QQ, with a full set of metal mechs in the Legendary Box with all expansions and Broken Token organizer trays, how much does it weigh?
Ryan: That’s a good question! You may need to ask it on BGG or the Scythe FB group, as I don’t have the Broken Token tray (they’re a third-party accessory company not associated with Stonemaier Games).
My set has just arrived. They have a good weight to them and just look lovely. I’m very sad that I can’t afford all 4 sets at the moment though. Definitely an excellent addition to any copy of Scythe.
PS. Maybe for those who can only afford a set, an optional module can be made where players can have special, harder to deploy, more powerful version of the mecha and they are only allowed one. I don’t know what these rules will be yet but I’ll wrack my brain on it after a few more plays.
Thanks Iwan! There’s a BGG thread about that somewhere–I’ll try to track it down and add it to this page in the main section.
Will more of these be made at some point in time?
Chris: We will only make more of this product if back-in-stock requests and future printing requests indicate enough demand to justify the minimum order quantity (for manufacturing) of 1000 units.
Hopefully more plastic base snaps will be made available. I didn’t get them the first time ordering the mechs. Hopefully they are easier to manufacture in lsmaller print runs.
The silicon base snaps, like everything else, have an MOQ of 1000 units. If we get enough requests on the form, we’ll make more.
Ok good to know. I just felt like the bases sold more that the 1 to 4 ratio of the mechs, meaning people bought a set of the bases even if they only got 1 set of the mechs.
Sorry to report that the Metal Mechs has been a rather frustrating release.
I wasn’t aware of the product until my local Aussie game store announced: “Are you a Scythe fan? We got exclusive Metal Mechs pack in stock! Only 4000 in the world!!! … only 1 per store”.
My reaction: I don’t know anything about it, but it’s Scythe and limited, so I have to have it now. Race down to the store to buy it.
I then learn that it contains only one Mech per faction, and I need to track down 3 more copies for a playset. But that means trying to scoop the one-and-only copy from three other stores, as they’re all “only 1 per store” here!? So I resort to online shopping, and now have my four copies.
But I’ve also come to learn that there are faction coloured rings for them, not available from my FLGS, and completely sold out from the Stonemaier Games webstore. And now I just have to hope that enough people click that “notify me … back in stock” link, for them to ever be reproduced.
In future could you please produce this sort of thing in one complete set, so that I don’t have to hunt every component!!
Limited premium products like this are really where Kickstarter shines – when you don’t know in advance what the demand will be like. With a Kickstarter every backer is (more or less) guaranteed to get what they wanted, they just have to wait.
P.S. In spite this experience, I still love your work Jamey.
Jared: I’m sorry about your experience. In the future, would you consider subscribing to our e-newsletter? That way you would have heard about it the minute we announced it, and none of this would have been a problem.
I know you read every comment, and I thank you for that Jamey, but I think you completely missed key points of my message. Reading the newsletter would not have solved any of the logistical problems caused by the way this product was released, here in Australia (and likely elsewhere around the world), due to such limited quantities. Even if everyone read the newsletter, some of those people would have found themselves still in my shoes, trying to chase down 4 separate sets across multiple stores and missing out on the insufficient faction rings that may never be printed again.
Jason: Thanks for clarifying! Though I did read your message, and I understand it–I just think we have different solutions for the same problem. The solution you’re proposing is that for a product like this, we use Kickstarter. I respect that, but if you don’t subscribe or read our e-newsletter and you found out about the Kickstarter too late, the problem would remain (and there are a myriad of other problems that can arise from a Kickstarter, hence why we stopped using it over 3 years ago). There’s always a limit to anything we make, and there’s a time limit as to when people find out about and order those products.
So I’m suggesting that you try my solution: Just read the newsletter and buy it from us. I can’t control which distributors and retailers carry our products–the distributors in Australia had the chance to order as many metal mechs as they wanted. What I can control is the supply of such products that we have, and I control when I announce those products to enewsletter subscribers. So if you want the assurance of buying a limited product, please subscribe to the newsletter and buy it directly from us when we announce it. Thanks!
Aside from the Kickstarter suggestion for aligning supply to demand (at a given point in time), my key point was actually this one:
In future could you please produce this sort of thing in one complete set, so that I don’t have to hunt every component!!
Definitely, I considered a few different ways of packaging the mechs, but I decided this was the best way, as it gave consumers the choice of buying the number that fits them best. As you can imagine, it’s much more palatable to most people to buy a $50 product than it is to only have the option of buying a $200+ product. Of course, that leads to the question: Why not both? The answer is that producing multiple SKUs of any similar product can lead to confusion–it’s why we don’t make multiple versions of Scythe or Viticulture or other games.
I do appreciate your feedback, though–I realize my comments may not reflect that, but I really do! :)
Thank you for your consideration, Jamey, and for the time you’ve taken to read and reply. (And thanks for providing the space for me to vent!)
Hope these will be released again.
We are! Make sure to request a back-in-stock notification here: https://stonemaier-games.myshopify.com/products/scythe-metal-mechs-1-from-each-faction?variant=12613053382737
I’ve requested a back-in-stock notification, BUT would like to know when the pre-orders are planned to begin?
I’m not sure yet, but I know it won’t be a matter of preordering the metal mechs–we’ll sell them when our fulfillment centers have received them.
Just learned about these. Going to need 4 sets for sure!
Hi Jamie, big fan of your games and YouTube channel.
Do you have an estimate for shipping 4 pa ks to Australia?
Also long shot, will there be Essen pickup option?
Will champions still get free snaps? Cheers
Siris: I’m shipping some mechs and base snaps to a fulfillment center in Australia, so shipping should be around $20 at most? Each set of mechs will continue to cost $50 each. Champions will get discounted shipping.
I will join the program now! Keen to grab a set of four. Thanks for all of your content and community engagement and beat of luck with Wingspan for the
Kennerspiel des Jahres.
Sorry Quick question – along with all of the other scythe content – will a set of four fit into the legendary box?
They’ll fit as replacements for the original mechs, but not in addition to them.
Hey Jamey, me and my friend are a big fan of Scythe and saw that more metal mechs are planned to be printed. Just wanted to ask if you had a general idea of when they will be ready to buy and ship. Also was wondering if you bought 4 sets if it would come with the silicon base snaps as it did before. Thanks!
Ethan: They should be on our webstore (mechs and snaps) in just a few weeks! :)
Hi Jamey, with the pre-orders of Tapestry going live on September 4th and the metal mechs being made available on the same date should a person place 2 separate orders, I live in Ireland so my copy of Tapestry will be shipped from the UK ,are the metal mechs also shipped from the same distribution centre in the UK ?
Ideally you would place 1 order to save on shipping. Both Tapestry and the metal mechs will be shipped from regional fulfillment centers (in your case, from the UK).
Hi, Could someone tell me the dimensions of the box please?
258x130x42mm.
Thank you!
Does anyone know if these beautiful pieces fit in the broken token insert trays?
Thank you for your explanation. Thank you very much.
