UPDATE January 23, 2024: We have some interest in the Scythe Complete Rulebook, but not enough for a full mass production printing, so for the future of this product we’ve partnered with Print & Play Productions to offer a print-on-demand version of the spiralbound rulebook. You can order it here. For non-US shipping, we recommend arranging group orders to save on shipping costs via this form.

The Scythe Complete Rulebook is a 136-page compilation of all Scythe rules and clarifications.

In addition to compiling all Scythe rules in one place (including, for example, all of the mech abilities on consecutive pages, while still providing spoiler warnings when applicable, as well as all Automa content), this rulebook also includes frequently asked questions and answers on a card-by-card basis. This isn’t just a rulebook–it’s the internet of Scythe, all in one place.

We also offer a low-res, black-and-white PDF version for free (there is a robust index in the printed version, but searching a PDF is handy as well).

Backstory

Over the last few years, particularly as the number of Scythe expansions, accessories, and promos grew, a number of people asked me if I would consider printing a single book containing all of the rules. My response has been that it’s actually a big project if done well, and it wasn’t something I wanted to devote my graphic designer’s time to (we keep Christine very busy). A few people have even reached out to me to say they would compile the full rulebook, but then they realize how much work it is.

But then something unexpected happened. Not only did Scythe fans Matt and Brittany reach out to me last year to say they were interested in taking the time to compile, organize, and index a complete Scythe rulebook…they actually did it! I was amazed by what they pulled off. In addition to compiling all Scythe rules in one place (including, for example, all of the mech abilities on consecutive pages, while still providing spoiler warnings when applicable, as well as all Automa content), they also included frequently asked questions and answers on a card-by-card basis. This isn’t just a rulebook–it’s the internet of Scythe, all in one place.

Details

The Scythe Complete Rulebook measures 216x279x12mm and weighs 0.7 kg.

FAQ

How do I know if I have the first version of the spiralbound rulebook?

We take proofreading very seriously, but a few mistakes slipped through in the first printing of the complete rulebook in 2020, mostly in the Automa sections. A quick way to see if you have the OLD version of the rulebook is if you see the word “variant” as shown below in the table of contents (the NEW version has the word “modular” there instead):

  1. Is anything actually happening with the EU order? It seems like months since I filled out a survey that asked if I’d be willing to commit to paying an unspecified amount for my unspecified fraction of the unspecified shipping costs, and no updates at all since?

  2. JANUARY 24, 2024 SHIPPING UPDATE: There is now a $9.95 ground option at Print-N-Play as of the posting of this message.

Make sure to NOT click “BUY NOW”–instead, click “VIEW CART” and then unselect “SHIPPING INSURANCE.”

Very important–if you don’t, they will sneak in a $3.99 “Shipping Insurance” charge and USPS already provides that.

I got mine shipped to Colorado via USPS ground for a total of $30

Thanks a lot Jamey and Joe for getting this guide back in print, very much appreciated.

    1. Thanks Hunter! A few quick clarifications from Print & Play:

–There isn’t actually a “buy now” option. All orders have to go through the checkout screen before completion.
      – The shipping fee isn’t a flat cost; it varies by location.
      – “Shipping Insurance – *This is by default turned on! However you can always opt out of insurance. This is package insurance regarding shipping. If your package is determined “lost” by the carrier, or is received damaged, we will reprint the order and ship to you for free. If you receive your items and they are damaged, please contact us and send pictures of your damaged items. If part of your order is damaged, we will only reprint the damaged parts, not the full order. Shipping with any carrier, there is always the possibility of error – this is out of our hands and is the responsibility of the carrier. Package insurance guarantees that we will follow up with the shipping service that your package was shipped with, and if needed, get you the reprinted parts that you need. We cannot contact international carriers (once the package has left the USA). If you are in contact with your international carrier regarding a lost package, we will fill out any necessary forms, but we cannot directly contact your international provider.”

  3. Is there or will the be a version to print locally where we just buy the PDF. Shipping rate to Australia is $57usd, which is just disgusting. I can print it here locally in gold for that price.

  4. Dang, PrintPlay needs $20 for the cheapest shipping plus a forced $4 shipping insurance fee, and I’m in the US. That kinda stinks. I know that ain’t you guys doing that, but gosh lol

  5. Hi Jamey!
I know that you are now offering the spiralbound edition of the rulebook, but is print & play going to offer a hardcover version?
    Thanks so much!

  6. Does Printnplay option means it’ll never get back in stock? You mentioned Q1 before. Printnplay options makes it $60 inc shipping to Europe (plus probably taxes & duties on top of that). Will you consider making color-version it available for self-print?

    1. Correct, this is the only future for the rulebook. I would recommend coordinating with others in Europe for a group but to save on shipping.

      1. Coordinating won’t work really as shipping rate grows almost proportionally with number of items added. Plus more items we import, more likely (almost certain) to get bigger tax and duty fee. Anyway, thanks for your reply and making it clear.

  7. So the rulebooks are now going for double + the price on the 2nd hand market; for spiral, and the hardcover is more. The demand is there. I’ve watch a dozen of them go in the past two weeks at prices that I just can bring myself to pay despite paying for hundreds of dollars of all the other stuff.

So the question is–What does Stonemaier need to see/hear/feel from its customers to realize that they need to reprint AT LEAST ONE of the two complete rulebooks? I’m a Stonemaier Champion does that matter? I appreciate all that you guys do, but when your products are going for $100+ on the aftermarket when you were selling them for $20-25, doesn’t that mean its time to fast track making them one available again so that your fans can support you, and so that you can make that money– as opposed to the scalpers?

    1. I’ve said that we’re addressing this soon. These things take time–we can’t just reprint overnight. Please do not pay more than $30 for the Scythe Complete Rulebook.

          1. This is understandably a business decision. But it is disappointing. I’ve invested hundreds of dollars into this game with the Art Connoisseur edition, expansions, all metal Mechs and coins, boards/play mats, Broken Token inserts (all lacquered to an aged clear to fit the artwork), and the Legendary Box to house it all. I just missed the hardcover rule book and cannot even find it on the second hand market. It would have been nice to complete the set. If it comes around again, I’d buy it for sure. If not, my completionist self is just going to have to deal with it.

          2. Matthew: Just so I can understand, is there a reason your copy of Scythe wouldn’t be complete with the spiralbound complete rulebook? It’s the same rulebook, just with a different cover. Or do you need both versions of the rulebook for your copy to be complete?

    2. I’m eagerly waiting for the reprint myself, but I think Stonemaier usually does a great job in re-filling stocks whenever there’s enough demand. They have also made full rulebook available as a low-res, black-and-white version which is maybe not perfect solution, but it’s free, so hard to complain. I believe we should a bit more understanding and patient and tbh you sound a bit too aggressive to me here.

  8. Is there any change we might see the EU Store stocks refreshed for this rulebook, or are they completely sold out? Thank you!

    1. There’s a chance, but most likely they’ll be sold out for a while. It all depends on the amount of interest we get on the back-in-stock form.

    1. My Scythe collection is almost complete! No really… i got it all. The resources, tokens, extended board, modular board, promos, all expansions, got the e-raptor insert for legendary box… i even painted all my characters (i couldn’t help myself)! Only 1 thing missing: this dang rulebook! Hard to find. Will there be a reprint? I already filled in the form, so please say there’ll be a reprint soon for Europe! :)

      1. Steven, I’m sorry I missed your comment; Sebastien, I appreciate you asking about this as well. Currently we don’t have plans to reprint the rulebook, though we do have some in stock in the US, so we may restock Europe from the US.

        1. I already got in contact with someone from SM games and got the reply i should fill in the form. Will i get notified when the EU stock will be replenished with US stock as well? Or how will this work? Tx for taking the time to answer on these comments Jamey!

        2. Tx for taking the time to reply to these comments Jamey! Much appreciated. Since i have filled in the form, will i get a notification via email this way if stock is refilled with US copies? I’m dying to get my hands on the rulebook as you can tell. :) great work on this game. Loving every move i make!

    1. We only have English content, but it’s possible that our Italian partner, Ghenos, might have it–please check with them.

      1. Unfortunately, Ghenos does not share any digital content of any kind for any game.
I couldn’t even figure out if they ever created the Italian version :-(

    1. Kelly: We still have them in stock! Just the hardcover version, though–we have enough of them that we don’t currently have plans to reprint the spiralbound version. If the hardcover is also out of stock in your region, please let me know and I’ll have it restocked.

      1. Hi, I’ve only recently gotten into Scythe and loving it. Can the hardcover rulebook be restocked for UK purchase?

  9. Hey Jamey! I’m a big fan of the game and have gotten all expansions, the Legendary Box, realistic tokens, metal coins, and all promos. I’m looking to top off my collection with the Complete Rulebook, but I’m a little worried about the hardcover fitting in the box with everything else. Is there word of a reprint for the spiral bound? If not, are my concerns warranted? Thanks!

    1. Thanks Maximo! That’s quite a Scythe collection. Because of the height of the spiral binding, the hardcover and the spiralbound rulebook are the same. Currently we don’t plan to reprint the spiralbound version since we have plenty of the hardcover version in stock.

  10. Hey, a friend of mine and I are considering a business venture and we’re wondering how many units of the complete rulebook have you sold? Obviously if info is private it’s no big deal. Thanks!

    1. Tell me more about your business venture! We’ve sold a few thousand complete rulebooks (a very small fraction compared to how many copies of Scythe we’ve sold).

      1. I was considering approaching some publishers with popular games that have lots of expansions and seeing if they’d be interested in partnering on Deluxe rulebooks that would include ALL the rules and getting together a Kickstarter on it. Also considered rehabilitating rulebooks for good games where the rulebooks are bad. Thanks for your answer, I’m not sure though if there is enough interest in something like this. Also not sure how much luck I’d have getting files and partnerships.

        1. Thanks for clarifying. Yeah, I don’t see publishers outsourcing that sort of thing. If they want such a rulebook to exist, they’ll make it themselves.

  13. Hello. I’m a Scythe Fan and I spent more than 400€ for the game , all expansions, realistic tokens, metal coins, art book, neoprene playmat, legendary box, encounter pack, promo packs.
I played a hundred games and have no regrets.
I mentionned Matagot when they ask for some helping people to translate this book in french.
So, I have one question: Why should I buy the new rulebook ?

    1. Thanks for going deep into Scythe! The people who buy the complete rulebook do so because they want all the rules in one place, organized and indexed accordingly.

  14. I’m not sure where we would go to point out potential typos, but on page 10, titled “Types of Units” under the “Wind Gambit Expansion” section the sentence starts with “An airships are distinctly different…”

    1. It’s just one of many different paper options available. It’s still paper, just with a specific texture.

  15. I recently received the hardcover complete rulebook. It is a thing of beauty and a worthy companion to the Scythe Art Book on my shelf. The attention paid to spoiler sensitivity — in-text warnings while reading and marked corners while flipping through the pages — is especially appreciated.

If you are making errata changes for future printings, I recommend adding the spoiler marking to the corners of pages 28 and 29. Those pages cover the hrm-hrm hrm-hrm from the Rise of Fenris campaign, and there is already an in-text warning on page 27 advising readers to skip to page 30 to avoid spoilers.

  16. Hey Jamey et al., I got the initial printing of the spiral-bound version, and then a corrected version. I now have both, and I’m wondering how I tell which is which. Help?

    1. The easiest way to tell is to look at the spoiler box on page 3. If that box contains the words “Fenris spoilers,” then it’s the old version. The new version says “spoilers” (without “Fenris”).

      1. Hmmm. Both say “STOP… Rise of Fenris spoilers are integrated…” Does that mean I have two copies of the old version?

        1. Page 101 – title Wind gambit characters – old version, Invaders from afar characters – new, corrected one.

  17. Hello, I would really love a copy of the hardcover rulebook! When would I be able to order the hardcover copy of the rulebook? I can’t see an option for back-orders. Thanks!

    1. We only accept orders for incoming and in-stock products, but if you get on the back-in-stock list, we’ll let you know when more arrive.

  18. I do not know if it has been said already, but the paper quality in the spiral bound rulebook is great! I got my copy today and it seems to be a step up from the “Rise of Fenris” rulebook (which was already great). Also, when I ordered, I was not certain if the “Rise of Fenris” campaign book was included. IT IS!!! Thank you to Jamey and the Stonemaier team for making this. The box is so much cleaner now.

    1. Thanks! We’ve been using a fancy paper type for most rulebooks since its first appearance in Between Two Castles. :)

  19. 1. Will it be released in multiple languages or English only at first?
    2. Could you, by any chance, offer the extra Structure Bonus Tiles from modular board separately?
    3. Shop is down! :(

PS: Great, great game! Really good job. Cant believe I found it in 2021! Need to check your’s other positions one day. :)

    1. 1. We released the rulebook in English, and localization partners will follow if there’s enough demand.
      2. No, we don’t sell expansions ala carte.
      3. Thanks! I’ll take a look.

  20. Hi, I preordered a copy of the hard cover rulebook a few months ago and have not received any update on its status. When can I expect to receive the book?

    1. We’re currently fulfilling first-run preorders, and we’ll start a new print run when we get enough back-in-stock requests on our webstore. After that it’ll take 4 months for production and freight shipping.

  21. I bought a copy of the spiral-bound book a few months back. Have you published an errata sheet for the edition with errors in it please? That would enable us to manually check and, if necessary, correct our copies of the book.

    1. Steve: That isn’t something we offer, but the revised PDF is available for download on this page. All spiralbound copies in circulation have the Automa errors, and per the message we sent to all spiralbound buyers a few months ago, we’re happy to send you a replacement spiralbound rulebook when the revised version is ready if you filled out the form on that message (particularly if you use Automa). If you can’t remember if you filled out that form, please contact Joe at contact@stonemaiergames.com.

    1. Paul: I appreciate your interest in that. It’s entirely up to our localization partners, so feel free to let Matagot know that you’re interested.

  22. The black and white PDF version is gone? Is this because the printed version will be available sooner than told?

  23. LOVE the new complete rules (and appreciate the openness of the error and corrective actions – I am a huge fan of solo gaming). Looking forward to the reprint AND the hardvcover!!

  25. Wow, I wait a payday to order and the first printing is sold out and a few errors were caught! I said I would buy this when the survey went out months ago and I will still buy it when the second printing comes out.

  26. Is there an ETA on the 2nd printing? I need to order a set of the Fenris dice but am hoping to wait until this is available to purchase at the same time. Keep up the great work!

    1. Heh, bad timing on my part. I see this question was asked and answered nearly simultaneous to my post.

    2. Based on production and freight shipping (and a little time for us to fix a few errors in the Automa sections), more should be available in Q1 2021.

  27. Joe and team,

Thank you for the follow-up email today pertaining to the issue in the newly released rule book. Mistakes happen and this honesty and willingness to correct the error is another reason why I continue to rave about Stonemaier Games.

    Keep up the great work!

  28. Hi,

I have sent an email regarding a possible issue with the complete rulebook but have not heard back yet so just wanted to ask the question here.

My question is in the complete rulebook between pages 108 and 109 there appears to be a page missing which starts the details around the steps in an Automa’s turn including step 2A. This is page 4 in the original automated rulebook.

My question is if it’s just me missing where these rules exist or is there a page missing.

    Thanks for any help.

    1. Hi Paul! We’re looking into this. The page does appear to be missing. I’ll be sending an email about it shortly, but let me sort out a few more details first. Thanks!

        1. Thanks for asking, Steve. We will fix this issue. But as I mentioned, let me work out the details before I send out the email. I’d like to offer a direct plan of action, and to do that we need to solidify that plan. If we can get all our ducks in a row by then, I should be sending the email out to everyone who ordered the Scythe Complete Rulebooks on Friday.

    2. Wow, 5 to 6 MONTHS until this is back in stock? That’s crazy. Now I’m not interested in purchasing it, especially when the screeches of the ebay scalpers start echoing in the darkness. Thank HEAVEN there’s a black and white PDF available. I’ll just stick with that, and it serves its purpose greatly.

  29. Is there the plan for a German version/ translation? If it would be available in German I would order it :)

  30. Jamey,

Will more spiralbound Rulebooks be printed? It says that these are currently unavailable so I am assuming I missed out.. Hoping more are printed soon.. Thank you!

  31. Hi Jamey,

In the table of contents (page 4) there is a spelling mistake. It says “Multiplayer Automa Varint” in stead of Variant (refering to page 122). The header on page 122 is correct. Since this is in the TOC it actually is very unpleasant; once you see it you can’t unsee it.

Hope this can be fixed in the physical print.

    Cheers,
    Rikkert

    1. Thanks for catching that! Not sure how we missed it, but the rulebook has already been printed.

  32. Does it mean that both softcover and hardcover versions will be only available directly from SM? The wording is a bit unclear.

  33. Anyone know if the spiral-bound will fit in the legendary box with the broken token organizer without box lift?

    1. I don’t have that insert, but I don’t think the complete rulebook will be any thicker than all the other rulebooks combined (which you can remove from the box after you replace them with the complete rulebook).

  34. Is there any update as to when this will be released? I’m really looking forward to picking this up along with the modular board!

  35. Sadly currently there is no hope for polish version so I guess I’ll stick with english one… Spiral bound in the box and hardcover on the shelf next to artbook ;)

      1. That won’t help – there is official polish edition of Scythe already, however polish publisher is not interested in printing complete rulebook. For digital version – I don’t have copyrights to polish translation and I’m fine with english one.

      1. I wonder what happened that they changed their minds… Yesterday I got my copy of English version, hope polish one will be published at least half as good.

  36. Ooooh I am excited to hear this news! I too will be buying both. Spiral for the table, and hardcover for gloating. I can honestly say that out of all the games I own (and I own quite a few now), this is THE one game my friends keep asking me to bring over so they can play.

  37. I will be getting both, spiral for at the game table, and a hardcover for the bookshelf.
Does becoming a Stonemaier champion only benefit US residents, or does the free shipping and pre orders work for Canada as well ? I am in Manitoba. Thanks.

    1. Thanks for considering becoming a Champion, Michael! The Champion Membership gives a $10 discount on international shipping cost. :)

    1. It does! It contains everything. Though you still need the components from each expansion to actually play them.

  38. Hi Jamey,

I would love to get the hardcover, however, when will we know if you intend on printing it or not? I’d rather not miss out the spiral version if you’re not printing the hardcover, however, I’d rather not buy both.

  39. The hardcover version sounds nicer and I would opt for that in most cases, but since this is a rule book, the spiralbound version sounds more functional for during game play.
    Art book = hard cover
    Rule Book = spiral
But in general I would like an updated all in one. I have not been keeping up with any updates since whatever version all of my stuff is. That and of course there’s a different rule book from each expansion.
So, I’d certainly buy something just to update and clean it up.

  40. Will be the cherry on top to our completed Scythe collection. My main concern is hole wear and just hope for the best paper choice to hold up to repeated use. I just picture my kids tattered school agendas and hope for the best.

    1. We’re using the premium paper we use in Wingspan, Between Two Castles, and Tapestry–it’ll hold up very well. :)

  41. How about one version with spiral bound and a hard cover? The spiral is slightly heavier than a soft cover and the only difference is the covers have a cardboard base underneath the print. I have a couple other books like this.

  42. Spiral bound for me. Very practical, though I would end up buying a hardcover version as well if it were made.

  43. I voted Hardcover, but if it is not ready to purchase by the time spiral bound it I might opt to get a spiral bound to have this sooner.

  44. I voted “spiralbound,” but what I really want to vote is, “Will buy spiralbound unless I know for sure hardcover is coming out soon.” :)

  45. Jamey, please consider the interest in this rulebook in any format a great start, but perhaps push the idea further. Scythe is a premium format game deserving of premium format accessories. Personally I would be much more engaged and willing to invest — at a much higher level — if this were a Scythe Compendium, with complete collected rulebook, history of the game development, and art book. Like a Scythe Definitive Edition. It would be a GREAT way to bookend this chapter of Stonemaier Games. Thank you for reading this!

  46. I would love to get either one. Especially if you could get Feuerland to translate it into german!

  47. …and just to be sure… there is no “vote here with check boxes or radio buttons”, it’s just responding in this comment section…right? I’m not missing the actual question – multiple response webform somewhere?

  48. In the survey there isn’t an option to purchase both the spiral bound and hardcover versions. I for one would be keen for both.

  49. the hardcover books that came with Arena and Cloudspire lay flat on every page. I would prefer hardcover, but will buy spiral if that is all there is.

    1. Interesting. How many pages is the book, and it stays open without you holding it open?

      1. There are some quality options for a flat-lay hardback binding, but it might increase the cost for the hardback. Honestly I’m in for both anyways and will happily give you my money. I have a custom “travel edition” of Scythe that the spiral bound would be perfect for, and it would be nice to have a high-quality flat-lay hardback for when I pull out all the painted pieces and metal mechs. Thanks to all involved with this massive undertaking to compile everything!

  50. This is a tough one, but the primary answer is I’d like to buy one. Spiral-bound is fine, but if hardcover were available I’d probably go for that.

However, if I buy the spiral-bound now I probably won’t ALSO buy a hardcover later.

  51. I’ll have one of each. Spiral to keep in box for use during gameplay. Hardcover to keep on the shelf for reference to brush up on the rules prior to game day.

  52. As I have every expansion, thus all the rulebooks I’d ever need as references, I’d prefer the hardback as a collector’s item.

    1. Our fulfillment center in the UK will have these for you to order! In fact, they have all of our products and if you order from our store to a UK address, it will ship from within the UK. :)

          1. Yay! Great news :) Publisher of polish version apparently abandoned Scythe-relate products so I’ll buy english ones to complete my collection :D

  53. Looks like you’re going to need a bigger boat!!! Spiral is the better choice IMHO – I agree with Ryan.

  54. Spiral is the way to go! I had FedEx replace the binding on my DnD books for a couple bucks and it’s the envy of every group I’ve played with since. Hardbound is fine for a picture book, but a rules compendium needs function.

  55. I would like one (Softcover), but in german ;-)
So I miss the option “yes, in a localized Version”.
But I think, that it would be too expansive for Feuerland to translate.

  56. I will buy both of these! Just when I thought this game collection couldn’t get any better, this shows up…awesome!!

  57. The spiral bound version is just more convenient in that you can completely fold the book without damaging the pages.

  58. Spiral bound would be my preference for the reason you mentioned regarding having it open to a particular rule

  59. I’d buy the spiral bound version if that’s the only one that comes out soon, but I would prefer hardcorver if I had the option.

  60. I will actually buy both, but probably hardcover in English and spiral in Spanish

  61. I’m going to agree with quite a few people here. I would by the hardcover version if available however if theirs not enough traction I would settle for the spiral bound version.

  62. I’ll buy the spiral bound version if that’s the only one that comes out soon, but honestly a hardcover version would be nice and I would buy that first if I had the option.

  63. I voted for spiral but I’m definitely getting both. Just release this already and take my money. ;)

  64. As nice as the hardcover would look, I suspect I will just buy the spiral bound version.

However, please add me to the list of people that really want a color PDF copy. That is even more useful when searching during play of the game, often times. I understand you don’t want to make it available in as high a resolution as possible, but having the PDF in color would be much nicer than just a black and white version.

  65. I’ll get a spiral bound, but would probably also like a hardbound in the future. The spiral bound would be great for gaming sessions and the hardback for my private collection.

  66. for the poll an option to buy both now the spiral version an the hardcover in the future would have been nice. As I would support and buy both.

  67. i will get the spiral bound, but would love to see a hardcover as well.
this may be a silly question, apologies, but is there any chance this book will fit in the legendary box outfitted with the complete broken token inserts and all available content❓taking out the original rules to make space would be the obvious move.
if it will not fit in the legendary box, a folio style sleeve printed with scythe art would be an interesting option to keep the book intact during storage/downtime, transporting/moving and or sticky kid fingers playing with my scythe game🤣🤣…god i love my boy‼️😎

    1. Jonathan: I don’t have the Broken Token insert, so I don’t know, but I don’t think it should take up any more vertical space than all of the other rulebooks.

  68. Wow! It looks like there’s a lot of interest in this. What’s the betting Jamie underestimates the print run and it sells out almost immediately? Not that that has ever happened before… 😉

    1. Yes, we’ll offer a free low-res black and white PDF so people can easily search through it.

  69. I would like the spiral-bound. I know the book is 136 pages thick, but I wonder how wide the book will be. Very wide books are difficult to handle at the table, at least for me.

  70. No hi-res full color pdf option? That’s really the only version I would want. Accessible from my phone at anytime, and searchable.

    1. The file is massive–the low-res black and white version serves that purpose much better.

  71. Hi Jamie! I think this book will really add to the Scythe experience, but I didn’t vote in the poll above and I’ll tell you why.

As an international customer (Canada), my concerns are always shipping costs, the horrific CAD to USD conversion rates, and availability in my market. I’d like to order a physical book, but it may cost too much for too little once everything is converted and shipped.

I tend to use digital rules for a lot of my games, and a low-res black-and-white version doesn’t sound that exciting to me. (But I do appreciate that it will be free!)

My preferred version would be high-res full-colour digital (with index!), but I understand the risks to your business that come with that offering.

If I did buy a physical version someday, I have concerns with both options:

First, in my experience, coil books tend to degrade even faster than regular books, and heaven forbid you get a tear. I’m worried about the book deteriorating too quickly; particularly if I’m playing different expansions here and there and need to flip back and forth often.

Second, a hardcover book sounds like a good idea for a collector’s item, but I think it would be very difficult to use in play unless the cover and pages lay perfectly flat. Nothing’s worse than that “page bubble” you get when you’re near the front or back of an open book.

All that aside, though: very excited to see this kind of content come out. Thanks for keeping things fresh in the industry :)

    1. Ty: We ship all of our products to Canadian customers from a fulfillment center in Toronto.

      1. Right, but still sold and shipped in US dollars, right? Depending on shipping costs, ~$40 CAD is just too much for a rulebook.

        1. That’s certainly true. We’re trying to offer a fair price, but I understand that exchange rates make that a better deal for some and a worse deal for others.

  72. Hardcovers are nice collector pieces, but it would just sit on the shelf. The point of having all of this reference material in one place is for actual play, so spiral is a practical choice that I appreciate.

  73. I am also in the “want a hardcover, but will but the spiral-bound right now, just in case the hardcover doesn’t happen” crew.

  74. I’d buy one spiral bound. Came here from the June 2020 email update. Is there supposed to be a poll somewhere besides the comments?

  75. I’ll add my voice to the “I’d buy both” camp – especially if it is going to be a small print run and the existence of a hardcover isn’t assured, I want to be sure I have at least something, though I’d prefer the hardcover. If I do end up with both, I’d put the spiral in the box for use in play and put the hardcover on the shelf for the beauty shot. :)

  76. Jus to echo — I will get the spiral bound version (SB); that was my vote. If a hard cover version (HC) is made available in the future, I will be getting that.

The issue is this: If both were available right now, I would likely only get the HC. However, I have no idea if the HC will happen, so I will get the SB on the chance that the HC never happens.

It is a tough position to be in, as someone who loves Scythe and this company. :) But it is a tough I can deal with and respect. :)

  77. I’ll buy the spiral option now with no indication of a hardbound, but would likely buy, and prefer, that too.

  78. The poll doesn’t give me enough options. I would buy TWO copies of the Spiralbound rulebook, definitely. In addition, I would buy a hardcover version if it’s offered in the future.

  79. I would go with the spiralbound, as that would work better while playing (lay flat, flip through quickly). Will definitely buy that as soon as available!

  80. I already learned a little tid bit I wasn’t aware of in the first sample picture. I’m sold! I also think that 1 condensed book will fit better into the Legendary Box then having multiple sheets and books.

  81. I would buy a hardcover in addition to the spiralbound. Thanks to the dedicated gamers who undertook this colossal work!

  82. I think the spiral bound version would be easier to flip the pages. Hardback are lovely, but you can never seem to open them fully without breaking the spine

  83. I voted that I would buy the spiral bound notebook, however, I would very much prefer it to come to retail so that I can support my friendly local game store.

  84. Hi Jamey,

Very excited by this, would be extremely interested! Any plans to translate it in French??

    Best from France ;-)

    Julien
