Custom Insert – Stonemaier Games

Custom Insert

This custom, full-color, foamcore insert for Tapestry is designed and produced by Folded Space to hold all Tapestry content and cards (sleeved or unsleeved) —including the core game and all 3 expansions) — in the core game box. It includes two ways to create the insert, including a method for holding landmark miniatures with third-party base snaps attached.

  • Fits sleeved or unsleeved cards
  • Assembly difficulty: Medium; please send questions to store@foldedspace.com
  • Glue not included (normal white glue will work)
  • Instructions Included: “Dry build” and then glue
  • Construction Time: ~1 hour
  • Includes two variants (unused pieces can be discarded)
    • Important: If you’re assembling v2 (the version that fits base snaps), the base of the tray 4 is used to make 5v2, not the base of 5v1. This is a misprint in the instructions. Revised instructions are available here.
  • See the Folded Space website for more helpful tips
  • Check out this video for assembly instructions. Boxed Meeples also has a helpful video. The Boardgame Mechanics review the insert here, as does Spellenwijs.
  • As packaged, the insert weighs 0.85 kg.

No Tapestry gameplay elements are included in this product.

  1. I built variant 1 of the FS insert. However, after buying Arts & Architecture, I find that the castle is too high for its tray, even though it ‘borrows’ space using a hollow in the underside of the tray above it.

I don’t see anything wrong with my insert, and don’t see how it could be constructed any other way.

Does anyone else have this issue with the castle in their insert?

Like another poster, I have labelled the bottom of each landmark, with colour-coding, to speed up teardowns.

  2. This insert is so great. I don’t sleeve my cards, and I got rid of all the extraneous paper, because the two manuals that came with F&F handle all of that. The insert took the better part of 2 hours to punch, dry-fit, and glue, but afterwards, I could finally fit the base game, all three expansions, and even an extra set of dice into the base box with no lid lift at all. I have put neat labels on the underside of all the buildings and landmarks for easy sorting; in fact, getting the pieces back into their bins is actually quicker than finding all the correct spots in the old plastic trays! I used the v1 version, because I don’t have the building bases, so I didn’t have any trouble with the printed instructions. Overall, I love the way the insert looks and functions, and it’s a big improvement over multiple boxes and So. Many. Plastic bags. Great product!

  3. I accidentally bought the original non-colored version. Will this still fit the base game and all three expansions, or will I need to return? Thanks

    1. That insert isn’t designed to hold everything (it was designed by Folded Space before we revealed the 3rd expansion, unlike the insert I talk about on this page). It will still hold a lot of components, though, as the third expansion doesn’t include any miniatures. You’re probably fine to keep it, but you could also return it if you want.

  4. Once this is back in stock, how much does it cost? And how much does shipping cost? (I could buy it right now from Folded Space’s website, but I might be willing to wait if I can get it cheaper here.)

    1. Julian: The cost will be the same as it is currently listed on our website (for the US, that’s $39). Please make sure to sign up for a back-in-stock request. It looks like you’re in the US, and US shipping for the insert is $10. Champions save 20%, so the total Champion cost is $39.20.

  5. I’m having the exact same issue as Ashley below with the lid lift. The comprehensive rulebooks don’t seem to fit. I tried using the reference pictures on the folded space website as a guide, but they use the original rulebooks. Any ideas? Thank you.

      1. I assembled version 1. I put the trays in the box according to the instructions, but then there are no instructions for the other components. Based on the folded space website, I put the civilization mats and city mats in the corner spaces left by the insert that fit them perfectly. Then I put the main board on top of the trays. Next I put the landmark board and arts track on one side, and the income mats on the other side overlapping them (which I personally don’t like, but that’s what the website shows). All of that fits perfectly right up to the top of the box, but there is no spot for the comprehensive rulebooks. It looks exactly like the reference picture on the folded space site minus the bag. The automa comprehensive rulebook can fit on top with barely noticeable lid lift, but the main comprehensive rulebook is just too thick. I’ve tried rearranging this top layer but haven’t figured it out yet. Thanks for your help!

        1. Thanks! That sounds just like my copy. I put the rulebooks on top, and there is slight lid lift.

  6. Hi Jamey,

Just wondering if SM is offering replacement parts for the insert? I got my order delivered Thursday and when I cracked open the insert to start building today, 3 of my sheets have like a black gunk on them. Not sure what it is but it looks like dried glue that tried getting rubbed off. I’d appreciate any response! Thanks!

    1. Yes, any Stonemaier product is eligible for replacement parts–just fill out the form and we’re happy to help.

  7. Has anyone tried the insert with tight fitting card sleeves? It definitely is not working with the standard ultra pro “penny sleeves” and I am trying to decide if I want to invest in the perfect fit sleeves instead

    1. I went with BCW “Inner Sleeves” and they are still too wide. Anyone have a link to a sleeve they have confirmed works inside the insert?

  8. I just finished putting together variant 1 of the insert. After dry fitting all trays before gluing anything it was pretty smooth. When I finished, I only had two issues. First, a very slight lid lift but that’s only because I threw in all the rulebooks, automas, reference etc. By far, the biggest issue I had was trying to identify each landmark and what tray it was destined for. I truly wish there was a landmark glossary that had a picture of each landmark, it’s name, and the track it is for. That would make putting the game away so much easier.

  9. Hi Jamey. Putting the insert together and ran into the issue so I came here to check. I see there are the updated instructions above, but this is still confusing in a vacuum (It says the instructions for Tray 4V2 are incorrect but the instructions don’t even originally contain a Tray 4 V2; the tray legend on page 4 refers to it as Tray 5V2).

I was able to follow the bgg link another user posted and reading all the posts together answered my question. I’d like to recommend you either point to that post or make further edits above to the construction FAQ to further clarify what the issue is, what people should do instead, and identify the pieces. Images were helpful, as well as someone identifying to use the “small” walls instead of the big walls.

    1. Thanks JW! We’re absolutely open to any edits to this page that will help people. I appreciate you researching the BGG link, but that’s a lot of work to ask people to do–I’d rather have everything in one place here.

  10. Wanted to leave some feedback about my experience with the insert. I can’t add pictures or highlight some specific parts, but I will do my best.

    1. This definitely takes more than an hour to assemble (and I’m a Lego/IKEA fiend).

    2. The instructions included in the box are different than those found on the Folded Space site at this page: https://www.foldedspace.net/incoming/tapestry-v2/#cc-m-product-14870439730, specifically at this download link at the bottom of the page: https://www.foldedspace.net/app/download/14870442330/FS-TAPEv2.pdf?t=1678718266. Differences include:

    2.A Page 1, paragraph 2, the in-box version says to take care for Trays 5, 6, & 7, while the online version says Trays 4, 6, & 7.

2.B Page 1, Tray 4 is listed as “Tray 4” on the in-box copy, but Tray 4v1, for Variant 1 in the online copy. The instructions are otherwise the same.

2.C Page 2, Tray 5v1 Variant 1 and Tray 5v2 for Variant 2 are listed as such in the in-box copy, but 5v2 Variant 2 is listed as 4v2 Variant 2 and 5V1 is listed as 5 in the online copy.

2.D Page 4, final diagrams and Tray Legends – due to the aforementioned changes with trays 4/5/5v1/5v2 etc., the diagrams and legend of the online copy do not match what is on the in-box copy. I only built variant 1, so I don’t think I ran into anything critically incorrect here, but it is disjointing when you’re trying to use the various copies to follow along better and they’re different.

    3. Page 1, paragraph 3-5 says to be sure you’re building it properly because of the color images, and to check online to make sure you’re doing it right. When you go online, there’s only images of the inserts from one angle, and no color version of the instructions. It’s somewhat helpful, but I still struggled here and there.

    4. The instructions for Tray 9 and 10 are especially difficult. You use sheets 2 and 8 for both, but there is overlap in the pieces used, and they have different art on them, so it is not clear which one you’re supposed to use for tray 9 and which you’re supposed to use for tray 10. Knowing Tapestry and the iconography, I was able to figure it out, but it still took me a few minutes to double check and make sure I had it right. Very confusing.

    5. I’m a little annoyed that the instructions do not include how to put everything into the box. The whole point of this thing is to organize your game, yet beyond the building instructions, you are left having to figure out on your own how to put everything in the box; from the inserts you just built to the manuals, to the board, to all the other paper copy… It’s very frustrating that you spent a big chunk of time putting this together and then at the end of it you have … more investigative work to do.

    1. I really appreciate this feedback, Ty! I’ll incorporate it into this page and will share it with Folded Space.

    1. I wanted to try that, but I don’t think it’s possible for this insert. However, I would recommend not gluing anything until all compartments are assembled, as it’s only then that you’ll know for sure if you got it right. :)

  11. Do you have an estimate for when the insert will be available again in the US? I’d like to order some of the expansions as well but am holding off until the insert is back in stock to save on shipping. Thanks

  12. I am very happy with my Folded Space insert for Tapestry!

I did the version 1 build, and everything fits perfectly. (I did not include the older rulebooks, since the newest expansion includes comprehensive rulebooks, but I did keep the older reference guide sheets. The new comprehensive rulebooks include all of this information too. But I think the separate sheets are a nice thing to have to give to new players.) The packed box can be stored vertically (on any edge) and even flipped upside down, and everything stays in place. No more plastic baggies or plastic tray lids to pry off, and everything is back in one box.

    I am a happy civ-builder!

    1. I had some lid lift, is this normal. I kept reference guides and comprehensive rulebooks only. Happy with the insert 😊 just wanted to know if this was normal?

      1. I don’t have that in my copy. Are you storing the city and civ mats above the insert or above the board/rules?

        1. Above the insert in the space for them. Everything is good until after the main board. I feel like I’m not getting the income mats/landmark mat and art track right

  13. I have just started to build the insert, and I already am lost… I am not sure on which the “interior” side and exterior. Are arts supposed to go inside the trays, so you can know were to put them back after playing, or are they supposed to go on the outside, so you can see what’s inside during play?

    1. When I assembled my copy, I put them on the inside. I think questions are best sent to Folded Space, Alberto–they created the insert and are the best equipped to help.

  14. I do want an insert. I have all the expansions including my order for Fantasies and Futures. I generally go for wooden ones; I just prefer the look and feel. I’m wary of foam inserts. Please reassure me that this one will hold up and do the trick. Please reassure that all the buildings fit nicely.

    1. I can only speak from my experience with the insert, but it is my impression that it will hold up well and that all buildings fit nicely.

  15. Since I don’t have the snap base for the buildings yet. I am battling myself to build variant #2 in case I buy a snap base. What if I didn’t? Then I would be bummed I didn’t build variant #1 instead.

PROBLEM: For those who bought FS-TAPEv2 Insert and built variant #1. Later on, bought the snap base. What to do? Still have some pieces to complete variant #2, but missing a few pieces due to Variant #1 build. What to do? Buy another kit? No Way, Jose.

(I would strongly suggest save those unused pieces if building variant #1 since the kit isn’t cheap)

SOLUTION: Maybe ask Folded Space to create a conversion kit from variant #1 build to #2. Instead of buying another whole kit, just need a few pieces from variant #1 build and leftover from FS-TAPEv2 to complete variant #2. That would save some money, I think?

    1. I agree Steve. As far I can (roughly) tell there are just two pieces that would need to be printed twice for you to make both variants from the remaining pieces. I’ve built variant one, but I am still torn. Would have been nice for Folded Space to have charged 1/8 more (the cost of one sheet) and allowed you to build both.

    1. “This custom, full-color, foamcore insert for Tapestry is designed and produced by Folded Space to hold all Tapestry content and cards (sleeved or unsleeved)”

    2. Mayday sleeves don’t fit properly. All of the cards fit in the tray but they stick out of the top of the tray a tiny bit, so putting anything heavy on top of them (like the board) may bend the sides of the sleeves. A 90-100 micron sleeve that’s slightly less wide would fit. I’m not sure which brand to recommend.

    1. We’ll gather back-in-stock requests over the next few days and will make more. The lead time for manufacturing with Folded Space isn’t long.

  16. Is this insert meant to hold everything in the original Tapestry box? Will pictures be available? Thank you.

    1. Yes, it holds everything: “This custom, full-color, foamcore insert for Tapestry is designed and produced by Folded Space to hold all Tapestry content and cards (sleeved or unsleeved) —including the core game and all 3 expansions) — in the core game box.”

I’ll take some photos and will post them in a few minutes here.

      1. Did you post pictures? I’m very interested in how the buildings fit. All willy nilly or is there a set plan?

        1. Yes, they’re in the sidebar of this page (if you’re on mobile, use a computer instead and you will see them). They are not wily nilly–each section is marked for specific landmarks.
