Rules & FAQ

The Tapestry rulebooks and the civilization adjustment guide are available for download. There is also a full rules video by Watch It Played. and a civ/city randomizer app from Corey Hopkins, as well as a landmark name guide and civ complexity chart.

The Arts & Architecture expansion amends a few rules for all games of Tapestry (with or without the expansion):

  • You may not activate the same space on an advancement track more than once during your turn.
  • You may not respond to other players (e.g., tapestry cards) after your final income turn. Your active game is over, but you can passively gain victory points from civilization abilities.
  • The tiebreaker is the player with the tallest landmark in their capital city.

If you have rule questions, please post them in the comments on this page, create a thread on BoardGameGeek, or ask them in the Tapestry Facebook group. You can see an ongoing discussion about civ adjustments here.

Rule Questions

A compilation of rule questions about specific cards and civilizations was originally created by Jay Nabedian.

Are there any common rules mistakes players are making?

This post accounts for some possibilities.

Can you play trap cards after your final income turn?

Good try, but nope! Your game is over after your final income turn.

What does this tile mean?

Congrats! You’ve found the one functional (and embarrassing) misprint in the game. That should be the conquer icon, but it’s missing the black outpost token icon on the red hex. So, that tile is saying that you can perform a conquer action, then score 1 VP for each territory you control.

The tile should look like this (clipped from the punchboard file).

If a space on the advancement track shows more than one benefit, which order can they be taken?

Unless otherwise specified in the reference guide, the benefits can be taken in either order. If a landmark is gained by advancing, place the landmark first (if it matters–usually it does not, and you might as well wait until you’re done with your turn to place it so the game doesn’t pause for too long).

Do the Marriage of State and Espionage tapestry cards create an infinite loop?

Thematically, a particular “marriage of state” can only happen once. So if a copy of Marriage of State ever comes into play (through Espionage or any other civ or tapestry interaction) while another Marriage of State is still active, the copy must choose a different track. This prevents an infinite loop.

What happens if you use a special benefit/ability to play the Technocracy card on top of a “this era” card?

When you play it, if nobody else is in the era, you get the big benefit. Otherwise, get the small benefit.

Shadow Empire Variant for 2 players: What card should we use if a tiebreaker is needed to determine the Shadow Empire’s next favorite track?

In the procedure in the “A Shadow Empire Turn” section, flip the order of steps 1a and 1b (change favorite track, then reshuffle). This means that you’ll use the tiebreaker card from the previous turn.

My level 1 Automa card is the same on both sides. Is something wrong?

Nope! It’s correct. Level 2 is printed on the mat.

If I don’t have room on my capital city mat, can I still gain a landmark or income building?

Yes! You would gain the building and place it next to your capital city mat.

How do the “[x] = 5 points” space tiles work?

These tiles are from the Plans & Ploys expansion! They’re explained in the expansion rulebook. Here’s what it says:

General Questions

Is there a Tapestry big box solution in the works?

We don’t have plans for a big box, as the original Tapestry box is already quite big. Check out the insert designed to fit inside the original box and hold all Tapestry content at this link: Tapestry Custom Insert.

Will the civilizations ever be reprinted with the setup adjustments on them?

While absolutely not required to enjoy Tapestry, we have decided to print new civilizations. Ever since Tapestry’s release in 2019, we have gathered/analyzed tens of thousands of data points and listened to Tapestry fans around the world–including in an extensive thread on BoardGameGeek–in an effort to ensure that every Tapestry civilization is as balanced, fun, and intuitive as it can possibly be, whether they’re in the hands of new or experienced Tapestry players. The result is The Revised, Adjusted, Rebalanced Tapestry Civilization Pack. We’ve also included a comprehensive landmark guide and added complexity ratings to all civilizations. You can sign up for a launch notification here; we anticipate this product will be ready in late 2023.

  1. I was wondering, since civilization seems to be the perfect theme for it, if there will ever be a legacy expansion or version of Tapestry.

    1. I appreciate you asking about that, Peter. We don’t have any future plans for Tapestry–we consider the game complete at this point. :)

  2. Hello there,

Just played our first 2 games and it was really great !

I have a question with the architectes : it says that we score 2 points instead of 1 for each complete row/column with only one type of building.

Let’s consider I have built all my markets so I score 3 times per row/column and I have 3 rows with only one type of building. Does that mean that I will score 3 x 3 x 2 = 18 points (without the Architects, I would have scored 9 points) ?

It seems really powerful, that’s why I’m asking.

Thanks a lot for your help !

  3. Just played our first game and loved it! Question about the science track though, when landing on a spot in the science track, chemistry for example, you do the following: Research to gain the benefit & pay to gain the bonus (if any).

This makes it sound like you MUST pay for the bonus if you land on a spot with a bonus. Do you have to do the bonus option since it doesn’t specify “may”?

  4. Hi! Im playing the isolationnists. What type of land count for the final points? Medows, moutains, desert, sea, forest?
And must the land have to be connected between the tiles or not?
    Thanks!

    1. Isolationists refer to “largest connected land mass of the same terrain type you control”. Grassland, desert, mountains, and forest are all terrain types that are land (sea doesn’t count as a land mass). The terrain must be directly touching the same terrain.

  5. Hi, I’m playing the Futurist civ, and my technology marker is still sitting where it starts on Metallurgy. No one else has reached Metallurgy yet. I reach Academic Research and activate Metallurgy, do I get the landmark?

    Thanks

      1. Sure,
“Gain the benefit & pay to gain the bonus (if any) of your current position on any advancement track.”

I know it doesn’t say landmark, but I thought it might be an omission as the landmark would normally be taken already if your counter is already there.

  6. Can a person acquire more than 1 milestone award? If I am the first to reach the end of an advancement track I get the 15 pts but if I complete another track can I get the 10 or 5 pt award as well?

  7. Hi Jamey! It’s been sometime that the PP expansion is available on BGA. Having fun playing the new civs online! But I’ve come across a situation as follows: In my last era, I gained a new civ by upgrading a tech card to the top. And there was only one civ left in the game since that was a PP civ only game, we only had limited civs. And that one was riverfolk… It gives you nothing but only negative points if you are at the end of your game. So I chose to discard it. But you have to draw new civs after discarding riverfolk… which means you will go into an endless cycle with only one civ being discarded and drawn… In the end, I had to take that riverfolk and lost a dozen of points. Although after all I won that game, but I thought if it is possible I can discard that and do not draw new civs in that situation?

    1. Thanks for sharing this. Even when you’re playing with an expansion, all core game civs should also be included. I’ll report this mistake to BGA.

      1. Thank you for you reply~ I think the PP only option is just a beta test right now. I should’ve known better in that game when the only left civ in the deck is riverfolk and then avoid drawing that in my era 5. But I think maybe it is still reasonable if players can choose only dicard riverfolk with no more new civ drawing.

  8. For the Tapestry card “Pirate Rule,” does “gain the benefit of the Conquer Dice” mean the usual method of picking one or getting both?

  9. In the Tapestry rule pamphlet, it says that a great score is 300.

What is the typical score for a game, maybe the average winning score….if you had to guess?

    1. We collect final scores on the Tapestry leaderboard form, so I can say that out of 11,000 reported scores, the average is 249.

  10. Hi, I don’t understand the extra rules of scenario 3 plans and ploys. Is there no way to advance the military track by the automa, shadow empire and myself?? Or am I interpreting the rules incorrectly?

    1. You are interpreting the rules correctly. In the Utopia scenario, the military track essentially does not exist.
      Have fun,
      David

      1. Thanks! I thought so but the rules also stated that if the automa gains a conqeur action he wil explore instap. Is there a way the automa would gain a conqeur action in this scenario?

        1. Hi Michael. This rule is there to cover every possibility. There’s no conquering in the Utopia scenario.
          Cheers,
          David

  11. Hi,
I’ve reached the end of the exploration track and then upgraded for the first time my Compass technology card. Logic states I should get a space tile (since I can travel in space), but the reference guide states I should gain 3 territory tiles.
What should I get in this case?

    1. Thanks for your question! The icon on the Compass card is a territory tile, so that’s what you gain (even in the real world, we’re still discovering new places on Earth). :)

  12. If a player would gain an additional civilization and there are no civilizations remaining, I assume nothing happens?

  13. I recently played a two player game of Tapestry on Bga. The other player won the game with 538. I have recently scored an all-time high score of 270 points and according to the rule book a 300+ game is exceptional. The other person ended the game with a total of 9 civilisations, which seems outrageous to me… What happened? Do the rules allow for someone to win with 9 civilisations? Is Bga broken?

    1. Definitely not broken, I had a BGA game where something similar happened. They were just extremely lucky in what cards came up, but it does happen. My best ever score was in a 2 player game, and I scored 535 points (only 3 Civs though).

    1. Yes, you can do that. In the spirit of the ability, if there is an active opponent, you should give the token to them.

  14. Does the first player that advances an era has to wait (skip his next turn) for the others to get into that era to keep playing? Or can that player just keep on going when it’s his turn?

    1. There are two types of turns you can take in Tapestry (advance or income), and whenever it’s your turn, you take one of those turns. There is no waiting for other players to catch up to your era; no skipped turns.

  15. Question concerning Tapestry: Plans & Ploys Utilitarians Civilization. Card says “After you gain a landmark on this list, you may place or move 1 of the player tokens on this mat…” Does “place” mean you may choose to add another player token each time you obtain a new landmark, instead of moving a token from one landmark to another? The “place or move” wording is what is confusing me. Thanks for another great expansion to an already wonderful game.

    1. Thanks for your question. “Place” is indicating that you pick up one of the player tokens on the mat to the ability for the landmark; “move” is saying that you can move one of the already placed player tokens to the ability for the landmark.

  16. What happens with the Landmarks placed on the tech cards to upgrade to the square spaces. Can those landmarks be placed on your capital city after you’ve used them to square the tech square upgrade?

  17. A player has reach the end of the exploration track. A science dice roll says to advance on that track again. What happens?

  18. The science dice is rolled. The roll says to advance on a track that has already been maxed out. What happens?

  19. Hello! I reached the last but one space on the the exploration track very quickly thanks to Socialism (the Shadow was there) but I didn’t get the benefits, how can I explore a space hex when I move to the end of the track if I have not obtained them previously? And if I am at the end and I have no space hexes, but thanks to another game effect (the science die, for example) I am allowed to perform the action despite not moving any further?

    1. If you don’t have any space tiles, you can’t gain the “explore a space tile” benefit.

  20. Suppose I topple an opponent’s outpost, then that opponent stands it up again with REVOLUTION (gain one resource OR stand up up to three toppled outposts). Then I topple another outpost. Have I achieved “topple two opponent outposts”?

    1. No, two outposts must be currently toppled to gain that achievement. If it was untoppled, it doesn’t count.

  21. Does the tapestry card “Revision” trigger its effects if you reach a claimed landmark by moving backwards on a track?

i.e. if the move was triggered by either the technology card “Time Travel” or the science track space “Neuroscience”

    1. Can you double-check the name of that tapestry card you’re referencing and include the text of that card in your question? I don’t see a tapestry card named “revision,” but maybe I’m overlooking it? And it’s always helpful to include the exact text of the card so we don’t have to look it up ourselves. Thanks!

  22. Where playing a masterpiece card at the beginning of your income turn, how many times can you play it?? For example 1 resource to move once up the Arts track. If I save 3 resources from the previous Era, can I use it 3 times? Tapestry is my favorite game and was my “gateway game.” Thank you Jamey and team. Expeditions will be hitting my table top soon:)!

  23. I have a misprinted automa card. The level 1 income card has level 1 printed on both sides. How can i get a card with levels 1 and 2?

  24. My memory is fuzzy on this, as it was a situation that came up last weekend. The “Doppelganger” tapestry card seems to say that you put a second cube on a track matching an opponent. In our scenario, a player had 2 cubes on the Arts track. They also had the masterpiece card that scored points for Arts track advancement. We couldn’t figure out if you score one cube or both cubes for points. What is the call on this one?

As a side, thanks for making such an entertaining game! We play multiple times on the weekend and the game still challenges us to score our best and try new things.

    1. Thanks for your question and for exploring Tapestry!. You only score 1 cube for cards/situations like this (the more advanced cube).

  25. The Treasure Hunters can take control of a territory with one of their player markers. Can these territories be subsequently conquered by other players? If so is conquering one of these territories considered a topple for the Tanks space? Is it considered a topple for the topple achievement?

    1. If a territory has two tokens on it, it cannot be conquered by anyone; if it only has one token (of any type), it can be conquered, and it is considered a topple when conquered.

  26. When taking the conquer action is any hex adjacent to one you control available or just the ones that have exploration tiles placed on them?

    1. To conquer, choose a territory that has no more than 1 token on it
and is adjacent to a territory you control. Unexplored hexes aren’t considered territories and thus can’t be conquered (you don’t know what’s there yet).

  27. In a solo game, Once the Automa has had its final income and finished its game, what happens with the Shadow Empire, does it continue playing until the player has finished.

  28. Can Heralds copy the “Entertain the Masses” tapestry card and therefore steal the stadium from someone and place it in their capital city Mat?

    1. No, the landmark is assigned when the first player uses the card. After that, the card wouldn’t have any effect for the Heralds.

  29. Why did Heralds not receive any type of nerf in this latest expansion. The civilization is completely busted.
The games where players have scored over 500 are only done with Heralds. No faction seems to even come close. We have collectively played well over 100 games of tapestry. Every game Heralds is picked, they obliterate everyone. Typically, our group consistently scores anywhere from 275 to 315 regardless of faction, yet when Heralds is picked, it’s a MINIMUM score of 450 (not exaggerated).

This game is very fun, enjoyable and has a very deep layer of strategy, yes there is a very obvious imbalance with tapestry cards, some cards will just inherently make your game much better than everyone else, (Renaissance played as your first tapestry while you set yourself to collect 4 income buildings, compared to cards like coal baron), yet there should be more of a balance with overpowered factions such as Heralds.

      1. That’s a very solid fix for Heralds start of game. I’m curious how it still holds up late game. For what it’s worth, my original thought was to remove a resource from Heralds at the start, almost forcing them to hit income 2 before others limiting the amount of potential tapestry cards they can use their power on, much like spies. Spies is a great civ, and are very balanced with removing resources at the end of income 1. Great changes though 😀

  30. Good evening,
Is there french translation for Tapestry and all expansions ?
    Thank you for your help.
    Best regards.

  31. When should Historians get their civ benefits?
It matters because on BGA, Historians benefits includes “exchange one tapestry for one tech card”.
If I’m a player with historian token, and I come to the tech track II-1/III-1, in which order should we play the game?
    A: I take the building
B: Historian take his/her tech card
C: I take may tech cards or choose to refresh the card from deck
    Is it ABC or ACB?
Or any adjustments on BGA are not official?
But there still exists the order problem maybe.

    1. I think this is worth clarifying, as I could rule either way. In what order does BGA currently do it?

      1. In the game I’m currently playing on BGA, it is after the current player’s whole round then the historian collect the benefit.
But those all happened on the millitary track, I haven’t seen any examples like I mentioned previously in which the order matters.
I think ACB is more reasonable maybe? Historians may not interfere the current player’s round so much. And it would be more efficient in online round-based games. :)

        1. I can definitely see either way, but I lean towards ACB too (with the Historian’s ability triggering right after the opponent gains a landmark but before they gain benefits/bonuses).

  32. In the page of civilization adjustments, it says that some civilizations get to gain resources at the start of the game. Does this mean on their first income turn? Or does it actually mean the very start of the game, and therefore they can advance on one of the tracks even before their first income turn? (I’m guessing it’s the first one, I just want to confirm.)

  33. Hey Jamey.
I was thinking about Civ Advencement – NANOTECHNOLOGY.
in my opinion it is unfair, cuz you have to discard 3 tech cards to earn 10VP. At this moment being on this track so high will surely give you 3x3VP at end scoring. Co Concluding – you only gain 1VP. Comparing this to CHEMISTRY, CARS is strictly unfair. At moment when you reach steps mentioned above, you will probably won’t use 2 tapestry cards or 3 tiles. Discarding it it is not a loss for player.
In my opinion NANOTECHNOLOGY ability could be changes as follows:
If you have 3 tech cards in one row (or the higher row) gain 10 VP – do not discard cards.

    Take a look on that….

    1. Check out our rubber playmat for Tapestry–on the playmat we made it only cost 2 tech cards. :)

  34. I am trying Tapestry solo. I am confused about Level 1. The chart says Income Turn 1: You. The text says “Track icons indicate track advances to be performed in the usual way, as the first event in income turn 1.” What does that mean?

    1. Hi John. It means that at the start of your first income turn, for each icon shown, you get to advance on that track. You don’t need to pay to advance and you gain the benefit shown on the space you advance onto.
      Have fun,
      David

  35. Question about HERALDS using the card DICTATORSHIP in his last era.
DICTATORSHIP say “opponents may not advance on that track until after your NEXT TURN”
If HERALDS enters era 5, which is the game END for him, so he will not have his “NEXT TURN”.
So does that mean HERALDS can do that to stop other players from advancing on one specific track forever?
That will be total disaster for other players… But it is what the card says…
How should we deal with such situation?
    Thanks!

    1. Yes, you can use them for solo play. I’m not sure about extra buildings–did your copy come with extras of something? If so, just ignore them and follow the setup directions as usual.

    1. “Can we conquer the territories with cubes such as the cubes of the treasure hunters.”

You can! But only if there’s only 1 token on the territory.

  36. I just got the plots and ploys expansion and needed some clarification on the spies adjustment. It says to start with one less resource, does that mean the spies start with negative one resources at the beginning of the game?

  37. When using Artistic Inspiration which reads “whenever you take a science die action, you may choose the arts track regardless of the results” does the player gain the benefit of the science die action had the “x” under its icon

    1. Ashley: Thanks for your question (and for quoting the text–that’s very helpful). The X icon always applies, meaning that you advance without gaining the benefit.

  38. Will the Arts and Architecture expansion be translated into other languages? We have the base game I’m Czech and wanted to match it. Thank you.

  39. The Historians civilization states that when your opponent with your token gains a landmark you receive the exposed benefits. My opponent was getting the landmark but not placing the landmark and saying that he was not gaining the landmark to prevent me from getting my civilization bonuses. So we were disputing the word gain versus placing. Can you help clarify this? And as a general rule are you obligated to place the landmark on or around your board, no matter what, even if you have room or no room on your board? My opponent would pick up the landmarks and then just put them back to the general supply. Stating, in effect, he wasn’t gaining anything because that was his choice.

    1. George: Your opponent was breaking the rules by not placing the landmarks–when you gain a building, you must place it (and if they somehow have an ability that delays placement, they’ve still gained the landmark, so your Historian benefit would still trigger).

Benefits in Tapestry aren’t optional. The rules state multiple times that when you gain a landmark, you place it (it isn’t “you may place it”).

  40. Question regarding Alien Biology & AI Singularity:

For AI Singularity, I think the rule allows you to move the token to the beginning of a track, but still mark Technology as complete for the 10/5 points for completing a track, AND for scoring 5 VP for Alien Biology each time you roll the Technology symbol. Is this correct?

Assuming it is, if you have the Utilitarians, and the Rubber Works landmark is covered by a player token (which states “whenever you advance on tiers 3 or 4 of the tech track, gain 4 VP), would those points stack during a roll for Alien Biology, giving you 9 VP per roll? One player argued that since you were at the end of a track, you no longer can “advance” so you cannot get those points. If you could clarify, that would be appreciated.

    1. Ken: Thanks for your question. Your first paragraph is correct. As for the second paragraph, I agree what the one player: If you don’t actually advance, you don’t gain the the 4 VP.

  41. In solo, when Automa explores, do they get VP? In the introduction it says “any rule not explicitly overridden here is still in effect, which includes you following the multiplayer rules” (so yes). Then under Income Turns it says “the Automa gains VP before playing a tapestry card and it almost exclusively gains VP during income turns” (so maybe). Then I watched a Dice Tower solo playthrough and they said the Automa doesn’t get VP for exploring (so no). I’m leaning toward yes (Automa gets VP for exploring) but there’s enough reasonable doubt that I needed to ask to know for sure.

    1. The relevant rule is found in the section “What the Bots Never Gain” at the top-left of page 2: “The bots only gain what’s explicitly mentioned in this rulebook”. “this rulebook” being the Automa rulebook.

Since the Automa rules for exploration doesn’t mention the Automa gaining anything, it doesn’t gain VP.

  42. Hey.
I absolutely love this game, either playing or as an onlooker but there was a random disagreement I had with someone who considers themselves quite a rules lawyer for this game.
During the Income step at the end of an Age, I just wanted to clarify: Do you receive resources from exposed symbols on explored tiles you control? Or do you only gain resources based upon exposed symbols on your resource track/Civ ability?

    1. Not from the territory tiles. You only collect those rewards when you furst explore them, and maybe (2/6 chance) when you conquer them.

      1. If I’ve completed the tech track and choose to put the square at the beginning of exploration then play socialism do I move both up the exploration track or just one?

        1. Here’s what we say in the rules on page 4: “This technology track benefit may result in you having multiple player tokens on the same track. Either is eligible for advance turns. When considering the relative position on a track, only look at your most advanced token.”

Due to the word choice of “either”, you’ll just choose one token.

  43. When playing the Spies Civilization, it states “gain the benefit of a territory or space tile in your neighbor’s supply”. Are the supplies a secret other players or common knowledge? If secret, when gaining the benefit, do you look at the supply or gain a random tile benefit?

    1. Territory and space tiles are always kept face-up on the table (the only hidden information in Tapestry are the tapestry cards themselves). In this way, you’re selecting a specific territory or space tile of your choice.

  44. INFORMATION AGE – question about new tapestry in the expansion

    it reads as :
WHEN PLAYED: Invent [tech card], then choose ANY of your [tech card] and [upgrade] or [circle].

the question is : can I choose a card on the first/third row and get the circle benefit?
because the tapestry says ‘ANY of your tech card’.

      1. thanks for your super quick reply!
doing some Chinese translation by myself since haven’t seen any info about the Chinese version of expansions… T_T

  45. I have a question about the ‘Feudalism’ Tapestry card. It states: “When Played: Either gain Resource OR gain 3 Victory Points for each of your landmarks. ” . My question is about the Resource option: does it indicate that you can either take a single resource of choice (regardless of number of landmarks) or take 1 Resource of choice for each of your landmarks?

    1. Thanks for including the text of the card in your question, Neil! That is always quite helpful. :)

The word “OR” in all caps completely separates the two clauses. In that way, Feudalism gives you 1 total resource if you choose that option.

  46. If you complete the exploration track (and gain space tiles) then complete the tech track and choose to restart the exploration track, can you use space tiles you already have in place of normal territory tiles for the explore action?

  47. When you’re creating the civilization adjustments rules, on what basis do you do these? Are there any places they are discussed? Is it possible that you readjust them later on? I find some of them to actually make civilizations worse or more superior than baseline civilization than they are were the adjustments…

E.g. the Treasure Hunters civilization, loose two resources (!!) when starting. That is seriously a heavy impact on a civilization where the you don’t get any more resources during first turn (you won’t get any house either since none of the tracks aids you in getting house during your first turn with only two resources). It doesn’t help with the card that you actually get a resource on your final income turn which is useless. I can see the adjustment requirement if the civilization abilities was from 1-4, but not from 2-5. So this is a card that is in my opinion almost useless with the civilization adjustments.

  48. In your income turn, which one has to be done first; the masterpiece card benefits or your civiliation abillity’s? Both are named “at the begin of your income turn’

    1. The Masterpiece cards trigger at the very beginning, before any of the steps listed on your income mat.

  49. When a player upgrades one of the technologies whose benefit is to earn an advance on a specific track without gaining the benefit or bonus, is this advance mandatory or optional? When advancing due to die roll, it’s always optional, but in these case there’s no random factor.

    1. Benefits are always mandatory (if possible). So the technology’s benefit you’re talking about would be mandatory.

  50. How Alchemists civilisation goes with Cavern capital mat from the expansion? I understand that resource generation is valid, but what about that additional scoring extra rows?

      1. What’s the exact wording as printed on the Architects civ that inspired this question?

      2. I think what you’re referring to is “Whenever you score your capital city, for each complete row/column where all the income buildings are identical (min 1), that row/column is worth 2 VP, not 1 VP.”

The Cavern says, “Completed columns score no points; rows score as indicated on the right.” The Cavern rows score either 2 VP or 3 VP.

Given the intention of Architects to give you +1 VP for rows where income buildings are identical, reaching that goal would increase the Cavern VP to 3, 3, and 4 VP (depending on the row).

  51. Am i understanding the Automa Muses Civ card correct?
Favorite track is based off of a science die roll every income turn.
1.If the favorite is Arts then move once up the arts track, roll the science die and do not collect the benefit or bonus. Otherwise move up the arts track 2x.
2.The player moves 1x up the arts track but not gaining any benefits/bonus.
Am I reading this right? I feel an Automa reference guide for the Civ cards could be handy for quick reference. Love the game, by the way!

    1. The favorite track of the Muses are set randomly during setup but not during the income turns. Instead they follow the normal rules for favorite track handling..

  52. My partner started with Riverfolk, and consequently 28 VP with her Mountain capital city. She played the Plague Tapestry card on her second Income turn. If she had replaced Riverfolk with the new civilization, would she lose the starting 28 VP? Generally speaking, does Plague make you lose any of the starting benefits, in addition to the abilities, of the civilization you are replacing?

    1. No, you don’t lose anything you’ve already gained. Starting with the Riverfolk and the Mountain capital city gains the player 28VP. If you later lose the Riverfolk civ from the Plague Tapestry card, you don’t remove any previously gained benefits.

  53. If you have already reached the end of the tech track and subsequently restarted the tech track and possibly advanced a few more spaces, and then you reach “space shuttle” of the exploration track, do you score the full tech track spaces plus what you have advanced again, or do you just score from where your token is currently on the teach track?

    1. It’s as if you have a token on the 12th spot of the tech track, so 12 is the number you’d use.

    1. We only publish the English versions of our games. But you can contact the Spanish publisher, Maldito Games, about getting the Tapestry rules in Spanish.

  54. About Recyclers, when I upgrade a technology to the third level can i immediately put that same technology on the botton row and score the 5 points?

    1. Moving a tech from the Recycler’s top row to the bottom row takes a separate upgrade action. That means if you upgrade a tech to top row, you must then have a 2nd upgrade available to move it from the top row to the bottom row.

  55. We have a question about when you can use the “Retreat” Tapestry card. A “Trap” was played after a player tried to conquer a territory. That player then used a “Double Cross” to cancel the “Trap.” Then the player with the “Trap” wanted to use a “Retreat.” The confusion occurred because on the “Retreat” it says that “you can’t also play a trap.” Since the “Trap” was cancelled by the “Double Cross” does it still count as being played alongside the “Trap” or is it now allowed to be played? Thank you!

    1. Hi David! When the first trap is played, the conquer action fails. Then the Double Cross causes the Trap to fail. You wouldn’t then have an option of playing Retreat because a Retreat can only be played in response to a conquer action and you’ve already “moved on” from the initial conquer.

      1. It’s funny how it seemed so complicated until you explained it. That makes perfect sense. Thanks Joe!

  56. Is the Influencers’ Trendy track a seperate track from their favorite track (do they maintain both)?

    1. I’m sorry, but I can’t find any civ called the Influencers. I’d recommend taking a photo of what you’re referring to, specifying if it’s from the core game or a specific expansion, and posting the question on BoardGameGeek or the Tapestry Facebook group. Thanks!

  57. Hi Jamey
We had a long debate yesterday concerning the Inventors’ power.
    The card reads as follows:
“You may move a player token from here to any tech card (yours or an opponents’s). That card is instantly upgraded, and ignores top-row prerequisites. If it is an opponent’s tech card, you may gain the benefit after they do (if it’s your card, gain the benefit as normal).
Whenever an opponent’s tech card with your token on it is upgraded to the top row, the opponent gains the benefit and then you gain the tech card, placing it in your bottom row.”
If I place the cube on an opponent’s tech card which is sitting in the middle (circle) row, which is the correct interpretation of this ability?
    a. both players get the benefit, then the owner gets the benefit again, then the Inventor steals the tech.
    b. both players get the benefit, then the Inventor steals the tech.
    c. both players get the benefit and nothing else happens (the second paragraph is only used when the original owner advances a marked tech to the top row).
We decided on (b) but no-one was totally convinced.

    1. Thanks for your question (and for sharing the text in the question! :) You got it right–(b) is correct.

  58. IN the Arts & Architecture rules – Civilization Adjustments, the “Relentless” civilization card is not listed specifically as having an adjustment or in the “no change” list. I assume “no change”?

    1. Relentless and the other new civs aren’t mentioned at all on the adjustment list, as they’re new in Arts & Architecture (and hopefully don’t need adjustments). :)

  59. What happens when you upgrade the Printing Press technology card to the top row during turn 5.

Had this happen and did not know what the current tapestry card was in order to cover, my opponent argued it was from the last played Tapestry card which was from turn 4. Is this correct and if not what is to be done when upgrading this card in turn 5 to the top row.

    1. The Printing Press reads, “Place a tapestry card on top of your current tapestry.”

If you’ve passed into the 5th era, there is no current tapestry card, so the printing press’s square benefit wouldn’t do anything.

    1. Here’s how we define it on page 3 of the expansion rulebook: “Upgrade a tech card. This tech card cannot be upgraded more than once this turn (so if you upgrade it using this ability, you cannot upgrade it again during the “Upgrade 1 tech card” step of your
income turn or via your civilization ability).”

  60. Using the Spies civilisation, can the player steal the landmark gained from the Entertain the Masses tapestry card?

  61. With the Tapestry card National Parks the bonus for placing a building on a territory you control is roll both combat dice and pick one result or pick one dice to roll and get that result?

    1. National Parks (from Arts & Architecture) reads, “This Era: Instead of placing an incoming building or landmark in your capital city, you may place it on a territory you control that only has 1 token. If you do: [roll either conquer die and gain the result]”.

So, just roll 1 die. :)

  62. Hi! I was wondering if the center island counted as a wildcard land type for the purpose of scoring the Isolationist’s continuous landmass ability. Thanks!

  63. Hello. I reached the end of the technology track because of someone else’s tapestry card. Am i eligible for the “Complete any acheivement track” bonus? I ask because this occurred on board game arena and i didnt get it.

    1. Do you remember more details? I can’t really comment without knowing more about which tapestry it was, where your token was, etc. Thanks!

      1. Thanks for the response. It was the Age of Discovery Tapestry card. I was at Nanotechnology. The other player played age of Discovery (via the Heralds civilization ability to make it a bit more confusing). They rolled technology on the science die and my technology cube was pushed into AI singularity. I didnt get the benefit as the tapestry card stated but i also did not get the achievement.

        1. I do think you should have gotten the achievement in this case, though I understand why this situation might result in an edge-case in the game’s coding, unintentionally misinterpreting your completion of the track.

  64. Hi team,

Got to play my first game of Tapestry tonight, and had a blast. Just a quick question on timing from our game. I used my final resource on an advance action to move to a square that allowed me to build an income building, and also had a bonus of some sort. When I built the income building I completed a district on my capital board, giving me a resource immediately. Am I able to use this newly gained resource to pay for the bonus for the advance action?

    Cheers 👍👍

    1. Thanks Robert! Whenever you advance into a new tier (which happens as soon as you pay the cost to advance), you gain the landmark. So you would have the resource in time to pay the bonus cost if you use that landmark to complete a district.

      1. Cheers Jamey,

Does the same apply for just a standard income building, or only for landmarks?

I think the specific space in our game was the “Plastics” tile on the Technology track, allowing me to build a market building. Using that building I was able to finish a district, getting the one resource from that. Can I use that resource to pay for the bonus allowing a tech upgrade, or does the bonus need to be paid before starting resolution of the effects of the space?

        Thanks

        1. Definitely! That follows the order of operations on an Advance turn (see bottom left of page 2 in the rules).

  65. When you build a farm and uncover the 4 points underneath, do you gain those 4 points every income turn or only once when you uncover the icon?

    1. You only gain those points during your income turn (every income turn from then on). You do not gain them (or any of those benefits) when you uncover the icon.

  66. Hi. I have a question about Masterpiece cards that can be used only once, such as “Mime.” When you gain this kind of card, do you have to use it immediately or can you hang onto it until you would like to use it? By the way, Tapestry is our favorite game of all time!! Thank you!

      1. Hi Jamey can you clarify you can choose when your ready to use it? I assume you have to wait until the start of an income phase or via a broadcast?

  67. Hi, I just started playing the game and it’s a lot of fun! But in one of my early games I got the inventors mid-game (age IV), and was disappointed to see that they provide no benefit whatsoever. This seems unbalanced compared to most other civilizations that have special instructions to provide some benefit if you get them mid-game. This wasted a key play for me (playing my Trade Economy Tapestry card) due to dumb luck.

    1. I think you still get the benefit on your last income turn, so you would get 1 tech upgrade for free. That’s similar to to some other civs such as Leaders.

  68. The Theatre masterpiece card scores on the Arts Track, if you were able to make it to AI Singularity on the Tech track and moved your Player token marker on to the Arts track. Would Theatre score on both markers?

Really digging the A&A expansion! Scoring has really exploded (400 up to 600) in our games (almost always two players). Has the scoring been something you noted? Not a complaint just curiosity.

    1. I’m glad you’re enjoying A&A! Higher scores are definitely a product of giving players more options. When you score a track, only look at your most advanced token. So you wouldn’t score both tokens.

  69. The Costuming masterpiece does it mean pay any 1 resource and advance on the Arts track and gain the benifit/pay to gain bonus?

  70. What is the exact timing of gaining masterpieces benefits? Before civilisations and everything else? Or standard – points when gaining other points and resources when gaining resources from income tracks? Rule book says “at the beginning of the income turns” but this sounds blurry.

    1. Activate masterpieces before anything else in an income turn. Imagine it’s “step 0” and activating civilizations is “step 1.”

Merci. Sébastien.

      1. The latest adjustments apply to any game played with that civilization, not just when playing with the new expansion.

  71. If I want the most current rebalancing information, do I base it off of the Dropbox file called “Tapestry Civilization Adjustments_r10.pdf” from 1-14-22? Is there anything else I should know before starting my first game (besides, the rules, obviously)?

  72. For the Urban Planners, how should I interpret the « if you do, you may place it in your capital city on a future turn »? Does this mean I can decide at any point to place a landmark from this card? Can you place more than one consecutively?

  73. When a card allows you to “gain the benefit” of the card of another player, does that include if there is a kind of detriment to it as well? For example the card that says you can no longer advance on science track but gain points whenever you enter a new advancement era, does the player stealing that benefit (via the Heralds power) also lose the ability to advance on the science track? Or just the “benefit” of earning points when advancing to a new era?

    1. I’m happy to help, but since you have those cards handy, can you type out what they say as part of your question? Thanks!

      1. Ah we’ve packed it away now! :D
        From memory:
Wartime economy makes bonuses that cost a resource free (the example shows the notation :. The costuming masterpiece card uses the same notation to show you can spend a resource to advance on the arts track.

        1. Ah, I see. Costuming shows a cost and a benefit, but it is not a bonus, so it does not apply to wartime economy.

  74. Arts and Architecture mentions a landmark card deck created from the extras. Is there a way for players to draw a new landmark card from that deck during the game?

    1. There’s no standard way of doing so, but I think there’s a tapestry card and a civ that let you do that.

  75. I have a question about a space on the technology track, 9. ELECTRONICS. It reads: In any order, upgrade 1 tech card and gain the circle benefit of 1 tech card in your middle row.

When you advance to this space and upgrade a tech do you get the benefit of that upgrade (circle for middle row and square for top row) AND the circle benefit of a tech in your middle row, i.e. double dipping on the benefit? Or do you upgrade a technology without gaining its benefit and then gain the circle benefit of a technology in your middle row?

    1. Yes, take the benefit of the upgrade like normal. Also gain a circle benefit of your choice (it could be from the same tech you just upgraded or a different tech).

  76. Is there a dutch translation of the Tapestry board game rules (only the main rules and the automa rules)? I have the english version but my friends want to discuss the rules and they don’t speak english. I know there is a dutch version of the game, but I don’t have that version. I found dutch translations of the Scythe game on this website, but not for tapestry.

    1. It’s possible that 999 Games makes the Dutch rules available for download, but that’s up to them. Can you please look on their website?

  77. To advance along the second stage of the art track, you cannot spend two of the same resource, correct? That is how I am interpreting the not equal sign.

  78. Hi, I have A&A ordered and on the way and I was looking at the new components and a few questions regarding the ‘Commercial Center’ tapestry card hit me and my friends.
    1) ‘When you do, gain what was covered.’ – is this one time only for whenever I’ve covered something new, or do previously covered resources count too? (e.g. When I place a second 1×1 income building, do I gain the newly covered resource ONLY, or do I get the new one plus the one covered by my first income building?)

    2) ‘or 3VP per square covered’ – so if I put 4 1×1 income buildings onto the card, do I get 3VP for the first, 6VP for the second, 9VP for the third and finally 12VP?

    3) In the case of putting a 2×2 landmark to cover all 4 squares, are the options A: Get each covered resource once, or B: Get a one time 12VP (3×4)?

Thank you so much for reading and answering to this, Tapestry is my single favorite board game!

    1. The Commercial Center tapestry card says: “Continuous: You may place income buildings and landmarks on this card. When you do, gain what was covered or 3 VP per square covered.

“Continuous” cards are explained more in the rulebook. But to quickly answer your question: do exactly as it says immediately after you place a building. You only gain what you cover with a building when you cover it. You don’t gain the benefits multiple times. That means each square can only be worth 3 VP (if you choose VP instead of what’s covered), with a max of 12 VP for all 4 squares. And yes, if you place a 2×2 landmark, you can either gain the covered icons or gain 3 VP per square covered (which is 12 VP).

      1. But is it “3 VP per square covered with that placement” or “3 VP per square covered now and previously”? As in: if I have already 2 buildings covering 2 squares and I add a third one choosing to gain VP, do I get 9 VP or just 3 for the newly placed building only?

        1. You only gain what you cover with a building when you cover it. You don’t gain the benefits multiple times. You don’t gain benefits or score points for previously placed buildings. When you place a building, only gain what was covered by that building.

    2. If you have a building on top of the tech card plot and you place another building on the tapestry card plot, you’ll either (a) gain 1 tapestry card or (b) gain 3 VP.

If you put a 2×2 landmark to cover all 4 squares, you would either gain each benefit once or you would gain 12 VP (for covering 4 squares at that moment).

  79. Just got A&A and seriously fired up to get it on the table. One question tho?
In the New Tapestry Cards section, it says “When a tapestry card is covered, discard all buildings and landmarks on it.” Does that mean, given a particularly spicy era, I could score the card multiple times? Fully covering, discarding the buildings/landmarks, and covering again?

    1. That’s referring to if you cover it with another tapestry card. If you fill it with buildings, those buildings stay on the card–you can’t fill/score it multiple times.

  80. On Board Game Arena the Com Tower Technology has a square prerequisite which is you or your neighbour must have discovered Houses – Telephone (4). I can’t find either Houses or Telephone as an advancement on their board, did they take the wrong wording on the card? Is their board labelling wrong?

    1. Some of the prerequisites require you or a neighbor to be in or beyond a certain tier of an advancement track, some require that you or a neighbor has uncovered a spot on a row of your income mat. This is one of the latter. Look under the gray income buildings, which are called houses, for a spot marked Telephone.

  81. Hi! I’m having trouble when considering one of the exploration tiles with a small portion of forest in the northwest and a food resouce as an island surrounded by water or as portion of terrain touching the edges rather.

  82. Found a strange interaction, not sure if it’s intended or if I’ve misunderstood how this card and advancement track space work.

    Marriage of State Tapestry card
    Science Track, Academic Research space

My opponent targeted me, selecting science.

I advance to Academic Research and get the building…. then select to replicate the Academic Research Space I just advanced to….

Should the game then allow my opponent to do an action of a space they choose, on any of their advancement tracks, until I terminate this loop and select a different effect to replicate – which they will also get?

The BGA implementation (still in BETA! May not be as intended) allowed this :P

    1. It sounds like that’d be a bad move for you. Because you’re letting your opponent activate a space over and over while you’re simply activating Academic Research for essentially no tangible benefit. So I’m not sure why you’d want to do that.

More broadly, there’s a new clarification (included in the Arts & Architecture rules, but applying to all games of Tapestry) stating “You may not activate the same space on an advancement track more than once during your turn.” So you would not be able to choose to activate Academic Research with the benefit of Academic Research, preventing this loop. It sounds like this rule is not yet a part of the Tapestry implementation on BGA.

      1. Ah, haven’t received my copy of A&A yet but that’s a relief that the clarification is there! That solves this loop that, despite being a bad play for me, could make for some silly games and scores!

        I’ve submitted a bug on BGA :)

  83. Hi, just played our first game with the Arts & Architecture expansion and have a game defining question! Do you score masterpiece cards at game end? If you do I’ve lost to my 7 year old son :-(

      1. Thanks Jamey, I am defeated! We really enjoyed our first play with the new Arts track and a thumbs up for the new European web store as well. Ordered on Thursday and arrived this morning (in the U.K.).

    1. For a deep dive into strategy, I’d recommend posting on Board Game Geek or the Tapestry Facebook group. The Entertainers just gives you a different benefit on each of your income turns–I’d say this is a good civ to give to a beginner, as you don’t need to think about this civ outside of your income turns.

  84. If I advance to Nuclear Bomb (military 10), and I have no Tapestry cards in hand, do I need to play one face down from the top of the deck like I would if this happened during an income turn?

    1. Nuclear Bomb says, “Gain 1 VP per exploration track space you’ve advanced. Also play a tapestry card on top of your current tapestry.”

Yes, you would draw from the top of the deck and place the card face down.
EDIT: I was mistaken. You only place a facedown tapestry card from the deck onto your income mat when you have no cards to play during an income turn. This happens so you can still keep track of which era you’re on. At no other time would you place a facedown card on your income mat. If you have no cards during the Nuclear Bomb benefit, you simply can’t take that part of the benefit.

    1. There are trap-like cards that let you respond to traps in the Plans & Ploys expansion, but no, a Trap does not do anything against another Trap.

      1. I believe the question was this: Once I play a Trap and the opponent plays a card in response, can I play a second Trap?

        1. No, a trap can only be played in response to a normal conquer action. A trap card can’t be played in response to a trap-like card (nor can a trap be played in response to another trap card).

    1. Is there a situation where it’s truly simultaneous? There shouldn’t be. Whenever order matters, unless otherwise indicated, it happens in clockwise order starting with the current player.

  85. Hello there,

i got a question for my received version of Tapestry. I think i got a Version 1.1 (written on the back of the manual). What are the differences between newer versions?

    Thanks for clarification

    Regards
    Andi

  86. Hey,

Playing with Plans and Ploys for the first time, and Spies Civilization adjustment says “when starting the game with the Spies, lose one Resource.” You do not start with any resources, so what does this mean?

    Thanks!

  87. If an opponent plays the Age of Discovery tapestry card, and I am forced to advance (without gaining the benefit) on a track where I land on the landmark space, do I still receive the landmark? Or are landmarks considered benefits?

  88. While a tapstery card tells us “when played” we do the action of card for that era or that phase?could you describe more about this type of card?

  89. two questions:
What happens if you take the exploration action but have no vacant areas near territories you control? i assume you just do nothing.
what happens if you take an action that gives you a specific income building but all 5 of that type are already in your capitol ? again i assume nothing happens?

    1. All icons should be noted on the reference guide for the advancement tracks, along with a few noted in the expansion rulebook. If you can’t find any, just share a photo in the Tapestry Facebook group.

  90. I am looking for clarity on gaining resources from territory tiles.

Step 4 of income states “gain income from all exposed icons for resources, territory tiles…”
The third step of the explore action says “Third, gain the benefit on the territory tile”

Does this mean that when you explore, say, placing a tile with food, you gain one food at that time of exploring, then also I’m the income phase?

Essentially meaning if you explore more early you have continuous income each Era?

I saw many things online saying you gain territory tile benefit only once per game, but the income step 4 confused me.

Thanks in advance! I have a Tapestry/Scythe evening set tonight!

    1. Hi Doles! During income you’ll gain exposed icons on your player mat, which may include icons providing resources, territory tiles, etc. So you don’t gain the icons on territory tiles during income. You’ll only gain those once, as you mention. Happy gaming!

  91. Is it fair to say that “conquer”, “explore”, “invent”, “upgrade” and “research” should be treated like a keyword? Meaning, if you see it in a sentence at any time, assume completion of that keyword as described in the rules? If I see “conquer” on a Tapestry card I’m going to roll dice. If I see “explore” on a Civilization, I’m about to place a tile and gain a resource. Etc….

  92. Hi Jamey (or any other player or admin willing to help me or read this).
I’m a big fan of Tapestry. I happen to be from Belgium and speak mostly french so I apologize if I fail to be clear. I own a french copy of the game and rulebook so perhaps this misunderstanding doesn’t exist in the original version.

    1) I would like to know if you gain X amount of VP each time you place a building or landmark in your capital X(being the amount of completed lines and columns), even if you do not complete a new line or column this way. The reason for my question is the phrase given on the last page of the rulebook under the picture serving as an example which translated back to english would give : “This capital contains 3 completed columns/lines. You then gain 3 VP each time you mark your capital.”. Or can you solely earn those points during your revenue turns or in that one specific military track benefit ?

    2) I believe there is no other rule concerning the first player than him being picked randomly at the start of the game. That being said there are numerous advantages in regards to being the first player which hardly seem to be compensated to the other players. If two player advance on the same track, which has no chance of not happening if you play with 5 players, the first player proceeding on the track would in a game he would playe the same way as his opponent gain:
    -Every achievement (e.g.First completed track)
-Every bonus ressource whilst changing era
    -Every landmark
I’ve agreed amongst player when there is disparity between player level to roll a dice to determine priority of action or let every player play his turn simultaneously and let the fastest player reap the benefits between players of the same level. I still can’t help but think I’ve just misinterpreted one of the rules.

    3) A more practical inquiry. There is no spot for tapestry cards(I believe that’s what you call the green cards?) in the fifth era. While I understand you’re not supposed to be able to play tapestry cards during your final revenue turn, it should in fact be possible through the upgrade of a technology card. Are you still allowed to play your tapestry card ?

    Thank you for your time.

    1. Péka,

First, your message is perfectly clear!

Question 1: You gain points for rows and columns in your capital every time you take an action or income that has the symbol of the city. You do not get the points when you place the building. You might get a resource when you place the building, if you complete a district.

      2. If one player attempts to play identically to another, the second player will miss the landmark in the first age. But after that, the differences in their research and conquer die rolls, and their Tapestry and Technology cards will make sure that they are in different situations. Yes, it is a sad fact that a fifth player cannot pick a unique track to focus on. However, I think it’s unlikely that the first four players will each pick a different track and will stick to it.

      3. If you get to play a Tapestry card during 5th income, it will be in the form of covering your current Tapestry card with another. But by the time you start 5th income, you have no current Tapestry card so it is my firm belief that you simply cannot take that benefit.

    2. Here are the answers to your quesiton. Happy to help!

      1) You only gain points for the rows/columns in your capitol city when you specifically gain that benefit. That mostly happens during your incomes, you’re correct. You can also gain that benefit from other places, like Drone Assassins on the Military track.

      2) The first player is decided randomly. Correct. But there may be many other factors you’re not considering when thinking about the advantages. Check out this thread for a lengthy discussion:
      https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/2265482/first-player

      3) If you gain a benefit that allows you to “play a tapestry card on top of your current tapestry” during your 5th income, you would not be able to take that benefit because you don’t have a current tapestry.

  93. Manifest Destiny – Does it trigger gains twice?
“Conquer a territory adjacent to your capital city territory, then you may gain the benefit of any territory tile you control.”
So do I Conquer, Roll the dice and gain the benefit, and then gain the benefit from a second tile?

    1. So, with Manifest Destiny, you’ll first go through the motions of conquering (roll the dice and gain the benefit), then you’ll choose any territory tile you control (including the one you just conquered) and gain the benefit printed on it.

  94. Hi, I’m new to Tapestry (love it), in our second time playing I was advancing on the Science track, when I reached Chemistry it says “Research to gain the benefit & pay to gain the bonus (if any). You may then discard 2 tapestry cards from hand to gain 5 VP.” If for example I advance on Exploration I’ll gain the benefit, but what happen if I don’t want to take the bonus or if I don’t have the resources to pay for it?, Won’t I be able to advance on that track? I realized that some actions say you “may take the bonus” and others say “pay to gain”.

    1. Thanks Luis! Whenever it says “pay to gain the bonus,” it’s just reminding you that if the space you advance to has a bonus, you have the option of paying to gain it. It’s your choice.

  95. Can I get confirmation on two questions? I think we played them correctly, but I wanted to be sure.
With drone assisins on the military track, I just get the points in my capital city for rows/columns once, correct? The number of revealed matching icons on the income mat don’t matter?
I had an opportunity to copy another player’s position and take that action. One opponent was on the last exploration track space (play a space tile, play another as a bonus for one resource). I couldn’t do this unless I already had space tiles of my own, right?

    1. 1. You get the points for rows/columns once. The revealed icons on the income mat don’t apply for Drone Assassins.

      2. Correct, you don’t have any space tiles, so it wouldn’t do much good to copy that benefit. :)

  96. Hello! Thank you for the game, I enjoyed it so much. But I have a question: last game I took architect mat in the middle of the game. Then i wanted to swap positions of two income buildings. I had 2 completed districts with one income building each. If i swapped them would i get 4 resources (couse i will have completed district with one similar income building to get bonuses fro architect’s mat)?

    1. No, when you gain the Architects in the middle of the game, the building swaps do not allow you to complete districts a second time. You can only complete each individual district one time.

  97. Hey, this maybe a stupid question but…
If someone plays the dictatorship card and stops people from advancing on the track but someone else plays a socialism card.
Could they advance on the track or does the dictatorship card rule over all?

    1. Dictatorship prevents movement on one particular track. Socialism (played after Dictatorship) does not remove that restriction.

    2. I’m happy to help, but it’s really helpful if you share the text on those cards. Can you please do that?

    1. No, if you gain an income building, you must place it on your capital city mat unless there are no available spaces.

  98. Loving the game, played well over 30times, just now I believe I have found an infinite loop, I may have missed something though, Tapestry loop
    Civ :Recyclers,
    tec cards: lithium ion battery,
    Science track: academic research,
    Tec track: nanotechnology.
As far as I can work out is I end up with an infinite loop with the ability to upgrade my tec cards. Its difficult to explain, so if you have the tec card lithium ion battery you have the ability to repeat a space that you are on, and if you are on the tec track nanotechnology you can upgrade a tec card and do the ability for one of your tec cards in the square row. Then if you have extra tec cards and you are the civ Recyclers, they can upgrade tec cards from the top to the bottom row and get 5 points.
Hope you can understand this and maybe I have over looked something.
    Thanks
    Paul

    1. Check the reference guide: It says that you can only use the battery once per turn, preventing this loop. :)

      1. Ah yes thanks, I have stopped reading that a while ago, maybe should check on it again.
        Thanks

    1. “At the beginning of your income turns (2-5), you may move a player token from here to any “when played” tapestry card (yours or an opponent’s). Gain the benefits of that card. Each tapestry may have at most 1 token.”

They can copy any visible card doesn’t have a player token already on it. If a player has managed to cover a tapestry card with another card, you can only copy the top card.

  99. Hi Jamey,

First of all i do have to say that we absolutely adore all of your games! The great amount of effort and precision that’s been put into it all and the extraordinary quality of the components keeps us hooked for every new game release.

Our most recent addition to the collection is Tapestry….just played it for the first time and darn do we love it :-) After getting the bits and bytes of the rules and reference guide puzzled together we (in scythe terms) “encountered” 2 situations along the first play that we couldn’t quiete get ahold of.

First being the exploration track. When i got the “Trains” i gained 2 territory tiles and had to explore (place) one on the board. However, i was not able to place this one tile directly adjecent to the territory on which i had my two “capital city” outposts since all spaces were already filled up. How to act in the situation that i cannot place a territory tile directly adjecent to a territory i control?

Second question related to the “trade economy” tapestry card, which lets you choose one of the rewards an opponent has a player token on. I was playing this tapestry card on the income mat in the 4th income round. On the technology track i was occupying the 3rd space called “stone tools” and my opponent was on the 12th “AI singularity”. In this situation i get the “all resources” benefit but do i need to remove my own token on the 3rd space of the track and placing it at the start of each of the 4 advancement tracks or did i had to leave my player token on the 3rd space and adding/placing another out of my personal reserve token beneath the income board resulting in a second token on either of the advancement tracks?

    Thanks

    1. Thanks Michael! I’m glad you’re enjoying our games, and I’m happy to answer these questions.

When you explore, you place a tile next to a territory you control. So if you’ve already explored the 3 open territories next to your capital city territory, you need to use a turn to move up the military track to conquer one of those territories, which will open up some new eligible territories for exploration. Without that, you would not be able to gain an explore benefit.

That’s an interesting (and opportunistic) edge case. In that case, you would not remove any advancement token–you would just place an unused player token at the beginning of a track.

Correction, the AI Singularity effect says to “Remove your player token from the technology track and place it on the starting space of any track.” This situation is no exception. You’d remove your token from Stone Tools and place it at the beginning of one of the 4 tracks.

      1. Thanks for your prompt response Jamey. Truly appreciate the effort you take for people to enjoy the games as designed to. Keep up the amazing work and looking forward to all the “codename” projects for upcoming years.

        V/R from the Netherlands :-)

  100. Dear Jamey,
the Tapestry card “Colonialism” says: “Choose a territory tile you control and gain each of the following ressources based on its land terrains ….”. Do we interpret the rule correctly that the territories printed on the board are just TERRITORIES but not territory TILES? This would make some difference here!

By the way: We have played more than 70 games in about a 100 days now and are still addicted to your game, still craving for more (factions, tech cards, landmarks in special forms ….). Are you planning to publish a second expansion?

Thank you for spending your time to answer players’ questions, this is not just very helpful, it even makes you somehow present at the table when we are playing your game (“Dad, you have to ask Jamey about this!”)
    Yours
    Günter

    1. Thanks, Günter! That’s a lot of games of Tapestry! :) Yes, we’re working on a new expansion now.

And yes, we’re specifically referring to tiles for that card, not territories printed on the board.

  101. Hey Jamey, we just got the Plots and Ploys expansion for Tapestry, which we love, but we noticed there are only 5 new landmark cards are there supposed to be 7 in the box?

    1. 5 is correct! The other 2 landmarks are associated with (1) a tapestry card and (2) a space tile.

  102. Just bought this and love it! Had a question that’s eating at me that I haven’t found an answer to anywhere. If I gain an income building but I’ve already picked up the 5 of a type from my income mat. Do I just gain another from the pool of unused or do you just not gain another of a type after 5?

    Thanks!

  103. Dear Jamey!

We had a very lively discussion about the tapestry card “Dark Ages” today. Maybe you could help us interpret it?
The card says: “Regress once on 3 different advancement tracks, if possible, then advance 3 times on the remaining track. Do not gain any benefits or bonuses”.
The player who used the card had not advanced in one track at all, but this was not the track she wanted to advance on now, and we had different opinions of what “if possible” means:

    a) that the player chooses the track he wants to advance on and only regresses on the other 3 tracks “if possible”. in our situation it was only possible to regress on two of the tracks, which is what the player did.

    b) that the player can only play the card, if there are 3 tracks to regress on

    c) if the player has only 3 tracks to regress on, he has to choose the 4th track (where he cannot regress) to advance on and is not free to pick one of the other 3.

Thank you for thinking this over!
    Yours,
    Günter

    1. Thanks for sharing this! I appreciate you typing out the card text here. :) I think (a) is the most interesting and fun, so I would choose it.

  104. Hi! Thanks for designing so many fantastic games! I have a couple of questions for you regarding multiple civs.

The first pertains to the interactions between two particular civs. In our most recent game, I started with the Treasure Hunters (each income turn, place a cube on an empty adjacent territory with specific terrain type to gain control of that tile as well as ‘treasure’ specific to each terrain type). Roughly mid-game, I reached the end of the military track and received a second civ – Traders. Since traders also place cubes on the map but those cubes give a benefit to the owner if the territory is later conquered by an opponent, we weren’t certain if that benefit should now extend to *all* of my cubes, or just the ones that came from my traders mat. We ended up ruling the second way and found some tokens to indicate which spaces were discovered by traders rather than treasure hunters, but I wanted to confirm if we played that correctly or if we should have done something differently.

My second question is: can you ever decline a civ that you are gaining mid-game? In the same game as mentioned above, I eventually reached the space on the science track that allows you to retake an action. I opted to repeat my final position on the military track, and gained the Futurists. Gaining that civ actually massively hurt my game, as it advanced me past several spaces on the exploration track that I was counting on taking. I know that I could have chosen not to gain a civ at all, and I know that gaining the futurists doesn’t allow you to pick and choose which tracks you advance on. My question is: if I opted to gain a random civilization and discovered it was the futurists, could I have simply declined to take that ‘benefit’? Obviously I know I couldn’t just swap it for a different civ because that would be unfair, but give how massively it damaged my last several turns, I feel like it would be fair to at least skip it and take no civ at all rather than gaining one that was nothing but detrimental.

    1. Thanks Jenny! I appreciate the questions. That is an interesting combination between Treasure Hunters and Traders. Given the ubiquity of player tokens, it’s a close call, but the Traders seems to look specifically at territories you gained control of via the Traders itself, so I think you played correctly.

All benefits in Tapestry are mandatory, so it’s not optional to gain a civ as a benefit (there’s a note about this on page 4 of the rules). That said, the intent of the “mandatory” rule is to close some loopholes, and you’re not trying to find a loophole here, so I think it’s fair play for you to decline the civ.

      1. Thanks so much for your prompt response! Your involvement in the gaming community is a huge part of what makes your games great, IMHO. Looking forward to the next one!

  105. Hi, I was playing the single player Automa version, and the Automa bot’s favourite track changed. I was wondering if this also triggered a change in the civilisation of Automa, as this isn’t explicitly mentioned in the rules. I can think of reasons both for and against such a change. I mainly ask this because I have the tabletopia DLC of Tapestry, and it won’t let me change the Automa civilisation if such a change were necessary. Thanks!

  106. Can AI Singularity action be repeated ? Like I finish the track and remove my cube from that spot. And there is posibility to repeat actions, like on science track and tech card,.. Can it be repeated or not? Thanks!

    1. No, without a cube on that action, you can’t use other actions to repeat it. That’s actually why we have you remove your cube–it would be too powerful otherwise! :)

  107. Hi Jamey, I have a question about the Tapestry Card Olympic Host. Can you spent more than 1 worker to get more points or just 1 worker for 10 points?

    Thank you

  108. I have about 25-30 games with P&P expansion. We feel like everything seems balanced over there except 1 tapestry card “Engineering”. It seems like double the effect of what we think is the most powerfull card from base game (the one where you gain benefit from middle row but WITHOUT advancing the card). Do you think it will be balanced one day?

    1. Daniel: It really helps if you share the card text on questions like this, as I don’t have these cards memorized. Let’s see…Engineering says, “THIS ERA: Whenever you invent a tech card, immediately upgrade it to the middle row and gain the circle benefit.” I hunted down the other card you were referring to, Industrialism, which says, “THIS ERA: Whenever you invent a tech card, gain the circle benefit on it. The card remains in the bottom row for now.”

I don’t think Engineering is strictly better than Industrialism. Sure, Engineering gets you closer to the top-row benefit, but you still have to meet the condition for upgrading to the top row. I would almost argue that Industrialism is better, as you could end up getting the circle benefits twice on all of your tech cards, which could provide a huge boost for your engine.

However, I respect your opinion, and if Engineering is diminishing the fun for you, just remove it from your tapestry card deck.

      1. Hey Jamey,
I have a question about Engineering, as it says “upgrade and gain the O benefit” is this meant to be gaining the O benefit twice? 1 x for the upgrade and 1 x for the “gain O benefit”

          1. Thought so, thank you very much for the quick response! GREAT GAME and expansion by the way! Have played it over 100 times and enjoyed every game…even the ones where I score terribly haha!

  109. Question – if the same player reaches the end of 2 tracks do they get both the 15 point bonus for being the first to reach the end of a track and the 10 point bonus for reaching the end of the second track? Or is it the second person?

  110. Question regarding obtaining additional civilizations during the game. Let’s talk specifically about Aliens (they start with 4 space tiles) – if you gain them during the game, do you gain those space tiles as well? Or in other words – if you gain any civilization during the game, do you trigger their “start with XYZ” effect or just skip it?

  111. Dear Jamey,
we love playing Tapestry a lot and it sometimes even makes us forget the cov-19 lockdown. Today an interesting question turned up: The Heralds played “Espionage” as their second tapestry card. At the beginning of their income turn the Heralds can re-use a “When played” card. So they should be able to use “Espionage” again and copy any other Tapestry card (on an income mat). THEN they play their ordinary 3rd Tapestry card. This would result in them using two Tapestry cards at the same time. Strange but possible, if we have interpreted the rules correctly. Have we?

    1. Thanks Guenter! That is a valid play, though you’ll completely resolve the the Herald’s ability before moving on to the standard “play a tapestry card” portion of their income turn.

  112. I’m considering purchasing Tapestry, but I know there have been some rule and faction changes since the original release that can be found on this site. Are these changes already, or planned to be, included in an updated version of this game? If so, which version should I look for, if not, is there a plan to update it? Please note, I have not played the game yet.

    1. Thanks for considering Tapestry, Aaron! There haven’t been any rule changes to Tapestry, and all printed versions of Tapestry are the same with no plans (or need) to make an updated version. There are a few factions that have small starting boosts or nerfs, but they’re subject to change over time based on data we collect for various civ combinations. That will remain a “living” part of the game with very occasional updates that can be printed on a single piece of paper. Those updates are also included in the Plans & Ploys expansion.

  113. Hi. My question is about the Mystic civilization. On my final income turn, I upgraded a tech card and gained a building that completed a district which met my prediction for completing 3 districts. Should I have gained the 10 point bonus or did I have to have my prediction completed by the first step of the income round?

    1. June: You’re fine! The mystics don’t have a “per income turn” ability, so you would look at their ability at the end of the game as you’ve done. You get the bonus. :)

  114. Hi! We have played a lot of regular Tapestry, which we have enjoyed tremendously, and just purchased the Plans and Ploys expansion. We were curious about the Designer’s Note in the rule book on “New Space Tiles,” which cites a lack of ongoing benefits for the inclusion of the new space tiles. We are curious about why Exploration’s final benefits were amended because of this lack, but Science’s — which also do not confer ongoing benefits, as Joe Aubrey confirmed in these FAQ comments — weren’t. Part of our curiosity stems from finding that the space exploration tiles are always beneficial, even if only marginally, while Alien Biology can be risky. (We know that the note includes an extra reason, that space in particular seems as though it ought to confer ongoing benefits, but we were wondering why alien biology ought not also.) Thank you!

    1. Ash: Thanks for your question. Just to clarify, nothing was actually amended. We just added a few space tiles that provide ongoing benefits. However, I learned through playtesting Tapestry that ongoing benefits without distinct reminders (like on “this era” tapestry cards) were easily lost and forgotten among the variety of things players are paying attention to. It sounds like you’re asking why the Science track doesn’t give players ongoing benefits, though all tracks actually do provide ongoing benefits via income buildings.

Alien Biology does add a small amount of risk, but generally you’re getting good stuff from it: You’re either getting points or you’re advance on tracks for free.

  115. Jamey, on my to 365 plays of Tapestry -right on track now :-P- and got the Chosen during the game. In the november 2019 update they had the text that they couldn’t be gained during the game. In the rulebook of Plans and Ploys this notion is absent…..Could you help me out?

  116. I have a question. There is this condition where the turn become so complicated that I can’t even comprehend whats going on. So here’s the condition. What happen if I got nanotechnology (2 from last tech advancement), and then I upgrade a lithium battery and coincidentally I also have a token in Academic research (science advancement 7th space).

Would you please kindly explain it thoroughly. Thank you in advance.

    1. Thanks for your question! Let’s break this down:

You gain Nanotechnology, which (in any order) lets you upgrade a tech card and gain the square benefit of any tech card in your top row. You upgrade the lithium-ion battery tech card to the top row, which right away gives you a benefit that you can use at most once on a turn (as noted by the reference guide): gain the benefit and pay to gain the bonus of your current position on any track. So you could then choose to gain the Nanotechnology benefit again on another tech card and activate the top-row benefit on another tech card. Using the battery to activate Academic Research won’t really do anything, as the benefit is identical to Lithium-ion battery.

My guess is that you didn’t see the note on the reference guide about only using the lithium-ion top-row benefit at most once per turn. Once you know that, it should be clear, as there isn’t a string of activations that could happen if that ability could be activated multiple times.

  117. The mystics card has you select the number of complete districts you think you’ll have. What’s a complete district?

    1. Grant: A district is a 3×3 section of your capital city. A district is complete when each of the 9 squares in that district are covered by a building (or an impassable red dot).

  118. Hello I don’t necessarily have a question but I was wondering what the max points you can have? I got a whopping score of 518 I had the architects and got all my buildings out by my third income turn. I also had 29 rows and Collums which was the game ender. Thanks

    1. That’s quite impressive! There isn’t necessarily a points maximum, but I’d encourage you to revisit the rulebook, as I’m not aware of a way that you could get all of your buildings out by the third income turn.

  119. Hey there, it’s our first time playing Tapestry and we’re not clear about the rules. The Tapestry cards (so the green ones) can only be played during the income phase? Thx

    1. That’s correct! There are some benefits that may allow you to lay down a Tapestry card on top of another, but those are the exception. Check out this rules video if you haven’t already. It may help you get a handle on the rules: https://youtu.be/J5FzMpkbasM

  120. Hi,

I used the Dictator tapestry card, which does not allow others to advance on that track until my next turn. Would a science die or anything else override this? Thanks!

  121. Hi

If i advanced on a track with a space containing a bonus and advancing caused me to be out of resources and as a result of the main benefit i gained a resource. Can I use this resource to pay for the bonus or do I need to have the resource beforehand to pay for the bonus

    1. Hi Khalid! You have the option of taking the bonus after taking the benefit. So yes, you can acquire the resource from the benefit and then spend it on the bonus.

  122. In regards to Shadow Empire I have 2 questions:
    1. Can you marriage of state the SE?
    2. Does the SE count for prerequisites in Tech cards?

    1. Just read marriage of state and it’s pointless as SE does gain benefits, so just the 2nd question please and thank you

      1. Yes, the Shadow Empire counts for prerequisites. The rules say the SE counts as your opponent and neighbor in situations where those designations matter.

  123. Regarding Academic Research, are you forced to pay for the bonus, if available, and you have the ability to pay for it? Or can you decide to just take the benefit, and not pay for the bonus if you do not want it, or you want to save your resources for another item?

  124. hi meaby my question its alreafy answer. what happend if you gain the “alien civilization” in the mid of game?

    1. Just like any other civ, you follow the instructions starting with the word “Start”. So, in this case, this civ starts with 4 face-up space tiles in your supply.

  125. And also one more question – I played tapestry cards which says that opponents cannot use trap cards on me. Do those new trap-like cards from Plans & Ploys count as trap cards as well? Rulebook says using them prevent someone from getting middle island achievement but does not specify that particular situation.

    1. For the Pillage & Plunder tapestry card, it say “Traps cannot be played against you.” So this only prevents traps from being played against you, not any other card with a different name.

    2. Hi

If i advanced on a track with a space containing a bonus and advancing caused me to be out of resources. However, due to the main benefit i gained a resource. Can I use this resource to pay for the bonus or do I need to have the resource beforehand to pay for the bonus

  126. Hello,

If I am maxed out on one track and then get this track result on research die – what is the outcome? Just bad luck and move on or reroll the die?

    Cheers
    Daniel

    1. Hi Daniel! If you’ve already reached the last space of track, you can’t advance that track any more. And you don’t get to reroll.

  127. Hello,

I’m sorry if this has been asked already. I couldn’t find an answer.

For Space Shuttle, Computers, and Nuclear Bomb, do you score points based on how far you’ve advanced, or by your current position? These aren’t always these same. For example, if you’ve advanced to the 10th space on a track, but then regressed to the 9th spot, would you score 10 or 9 points?

    1. If you’ve previously taken the benefit of AI Singularity, as the Reference Guide says, “This track still counts as complete.” So you’ll score for having advanced all the steps on the Technology track.

      1. We saw the AI Singularity rule. Our group wasn’t sure if regression on the other tracks was ruled differently. Thanks.

  128. Scenario: Craftsmen (Player A) uses Alliance tapestry Card to pick the Inventors (Player B) and then the Inventors income and use their civ ability to upgrade the Traders (Player C) tech card. Does Player A receive the benefit via Alliance, or player C upgrading a tech card via player B’s Civ ability?

(i hope that makes sense haha)

Also are you guys going to re-jig the Civ adjustments with the new Civ’s being introduced?

    1. Yes, in this specific situation, player C would take the benefit of the tech card, then player B, then player A. The Inventors would upgrade the Traders’ tech card, causing the Traders to get the benefit, allowing the Inventors to gain the benefit after that. Since the Inventors upgraded that tech card, the Crafstmen would gain the benefit of their Alliance, taking the tech card benefit after the Inventors.

        1. Joe works for Stonemaier Games–his answers represent the rulebook. Every edge case and example aren’t in the rulebook, but if you have a rules question, we can answer it (or point to where that rule is mentioned in the rulebook).

  129. When you have the militarism tapestry card and you place an outpost, do you roll the conquer dice? Or is conquering a separate action from placing an outpost and gaining control?

      1. On one of the space exploration hexes, there is a red hexagon. Does this mean ‘place an outpost without conquering,’ similarly to the militarism tapestry card?

        Thank you for your response.

  130. When played “Alliance” Tapestry card, “Whenever they upgrade a Tech card, you gain the benefit after they do.” If the Tech card has the Landmark as the benefit, I assume gain the benefit doesn’t apply since there’s only one Landmark? So I get nothing that time. Right?

  131. If the Aliens are neighbors with the Spies, and spies income and use the “Copy a benefit from the supply tiles (space or exploration)” and they take the Military = 5VP, does this effect work the entire game, or only while it is in the supply of the Aliens?

    1. The Spies only gain the benefit of a space tile (or territory tile) “in a neighbor’s supply.” As soon as the neighbor has played the tile (which for the Aliens means placing it on their civilization mat) then the tile is no longer in their supply and is no longer any benefit to the Spies.

  132. Hi there. Great game! I have a question regarding landmarks. In the rules it states that landmarks are to be aligned with the grid of the capital board. Does this mean the landmark can cross over district lines or must the landmark fit within the District Square? I understand that a landmark can extend off the edge of the grid, just after clarification inside the capital city. Thanks Paul.

    1. Yes, landmarks can cross over district lines. That line is in the rules to prevent players from, say, placing a landmark diagonally (ignoring the grid lines entirely).

  133. When playing with the nomad,…

if you put a house on a empty tile do you still get to roll the black and red dice like if you put an outpost on that tile ?

  134. Hi! We love Tapestry but just came across an upsetting (for my husband) scenario. I played Age of Discovery and rolled technology which required him to move to the last space on that track without gaining the bonus. Is that it? Is there anyway he can gain that bonus, or is it a great block on my part (ha!)?

  135. What counts as a new tier? Does regressing into a previous tier (from III to II) count as entering a new tier? Or is that tier not new because you have already been through it?

    1. If you’re asking about the Futurists and gaining landmarks, the rules say you gain the landmark by advancing into a new tier. You can’t gain a landmark by regressing.

      1. I was asking about Theocracy. It says entering a NEW tier grants you vp. Does regressing count in this case? Basically regressing then advancing (IV to III), then (III to IV). Would that grant 4 vp, for example?

        1. You can advance or regress into a new tier to get the benefit as long as Theocracy is active (during “this era”).

          1. So if I understand correctly, a new tier isn’t one that you have been through already, but rather a change in tiers that occurs. Or else regressing into a NEW era would not be possible.

  136. A small question regarding the Treasure Hunters: they place a token on a just-placed exploration tile, stating that it isn’t a conquer (no rolling dice) but you still control it.

But can you still play a trap if someone attacks the token? It seems strange that the treasure hunters can lay a trap, but reading the rules they don’t seem to require an outpost for playing a trap-card. We ruled you could, but just wanted clarification as it did create a bit of a discussion.

  137. If your starting civ is heralds and you play the capitalism card on maker of fire, do you gain the benefit of 2VP per yellow? (Capitalism says effect is during income and heralds have you play the tapestry card AFTER income)

    1. With Capitalism played on Maker of Fire after the Herald’s first income turn, they could not gain the benefit of Capitalism’s “This Era: When you gain income, gain 2 points…” because the income has already happened.

  138. I have the expansion and receive the Aliens during the game, which say to “start with 4 face-up space tiles…” – do I still get these as it doesn’t say “start of the game” like some other civs, or are they simply useless if you gain then during the game and isn’t near the end of the Explore track?

    1. That wording is used because it applies whether the Aliens are your starting civ or if you gain them during the game. So yes, you gain those 4 tiles even if you gain the Aliens in the middle of the game.

      1. Perfect, thank you. We’re playing the first game with the expansion, three players, and it’s glorious! Such small additions, so great an effect.

    1. No, Revolution does not mention “conquer” and a Trap card can only be discarded when an opponent tries to conquer your territory.

      1. Thank you, that is what I thought. I was overruled by my opponents, though, because the net result (me taking control of the territory) was the same as if I had conquered it.

  139. I have a question. I was playing with the Futurists. I reached the Tier 3 and took the building. So, with the tier 2 building avaliable (where I started, but get no building), my friend played “Socialism” and reached me. The question is: does he get the tier 2 building as he advances through the board?

  140. Hello. I have a question: If I reach the end of the Technology Track (AI Singularity) and restart my player marker in the same Technology Track, and then advance 8 more steps this track. Then I upgrade the Watch invention to the square level to score points for how further i have progressed the Technology Track. Do I score the 12 steps plus the 8 more that I restarted in that track or do I just score 8 points that I scored after the restart in that track? PS: (The reference sheet for AI Singularity does say that the track still counts as completed).
Thanks and sorry for my english, not my native language.

  141. Hello. First of all, love the game. I do have a question though: The tapestry card ‘Exploitation’; what are the victory points that it is referring to? I can’t seem to find a link between exploring ie. placing tiles, gaining resources and being awarded points automatically, in any other context.

  142. With the Inventors civilization, what happens if I place my token on another player’s fully upgraded, top row invention?

    1. According to the Inventor’s Civilization mat, nothing happens. It can’t be upgraded, and since it’s already been upgraded to the top row, you don’t take the card.

  143. Hi! Thanks Stonemaier Games for such a great game! I have a question: can I perform a conquer action when I am out of outpost? ( just to receive a dice bonus)

  144. I have a question when a player receives a new random civilization. Does the new civilization the player received replace the starting civilization or is it simply another possible bonus that the player can use along with their original civ? In other words, does the player have to choose one of two civ bonuses or do they get both for the remainder of the game?

      1. Thank you for such a quick follow-up. I’m just play-testing the game myself, so I can introduce it to my gaming group tomorrow night.

  145. Hello,
The link to rulebooks and adjustments seems to be broken. It will be great if you could please check on it. Many thanks.

      1. Hi Jamey,

Many thanks for your reply. I was first getting the following message in Chrome:

  146. Hello! Looking for help, played a game last night and gained Futurist mid game and it made me lose.

So I was just about to move in to the final place for both Tech and Science (IV) and gained futurist and it made me skip all those actions (without gaining benefits or bonuses) and then I literally couldn’t do anything else and had to end my turn. (As only resources I had where the men and bags of gold, so gaining 1 mushroom and Star meant nothing)

Is this civilisation meant to “you may advance 4 spots” or is it something that it’s just bad luck/ bad planning on my behalf, as I think gaining something shouldn’t be an ultimate downfall.

    1. Hi Mitchell! Gaining another civilization is a very wild part of the game. I’m sorry it didn’t work out for you this time.

      1. Okay….we will just have a homebrew rule as that’s dumb one thing can cause you to loose.

  147. Hi I started as the futurists and I was wondering, while I am still in my first era do I really have to wait two more income turns to advance an era or are my requirements lowered?

    1. Cooper: When it’s your turn as the Futurists, you’ll take it just like any other player. I think you might be confusing “era” and “tier”. You move into a new era when you use your turn to take income (instead of an advancement turn when you advance on a track). The Futurists begin the game in Tier II of each advancement track, which is completely unrelated to eras. When it’s your first advancement turn, simply choose an advancement track, pay the 2-resource cost, and advance on that track to gain the benefit.

      1. Hi I’d like to know when using Futuristic civilization if I have to skip 4 spaces every development track when moving into a new era?

        1. Nope, only when you gain that civ (which is usually at the beginning of the game).

          1. Just one more question please. If I receive a new civ during the game, am I able to use both civ abilities ? I mean the civ I received at the beggining (on which during my income turns I have some benefits to obtain) and the new one? By the way, thank you for your prompt answer, it’s the first game of yours I bought, and me and my family are enjoying so much, greetings from Brazil!

  148. Having an alliance (tapestry) with someone, can they force you to play a tapestry over it by upgrading the printing press. Or can you choose not to play a tapestry over it?

    1. If you had an Alliance with the owner of the Printing Press, and it was upgraded to its square benefit, then you would be forced to take this benefit (benefits are mandatory).

  149. I just witnessed a final score of 572 in a 3-player-game. Has anyone ever witnessed such numbers before?

  150. Hi,
In our game group, we are enjoying Tapestry very much.
    I have 2 rules questions:
    – If you reach the AI Singularity track and have to remove your player token, is it also allowed to place on the starting track of the Technology track, or does it have to be a different track?
    – Another question is on the Nomads civilization. We do not understand the last line: “You still gain victory points for buildings (e.g. house points) whether they’re on the map or in your capital city”. I think the houses you place on your map do not gain points don’t they?

    Thanks a lot
    Michel from Belgium

    1. 1. With the AI Singularity benefit you can move the cube back to the start of the Technology track.

      2. That sentence says when you place income buildings on the map, the [wreath inside building] effect still counts them, even though the Reference Sheet describes that effect as “Gain 1VP for each house in your capitol city.”

  151. Hi, when I advanced into Nuclear Bomb I played the dictatorship tapestry card over my current one, I then chose to advance on the military track (drone assassin) do I still gain the Nuclear Bomb’s bonus track building or is it lost? Or is it treated like the science die?

    Thank you

    1. As soon as you advance into the new tier, before taking that space’s benefit or bonus (in this case, Nuclear Bomb), take the Landmark and place it on your mat. Everything else happens after that, so you definitely gain the Landmark.

    2. I have a similar question, and you may have referenced it when you mentioned the science die: When you advance on a track you must take the benefit (first) and then you may pay for the bonus (afterward). This sequence seems important because the benefit can occasionally give you the resource you need to gain the bonus. But what happens if taking the benefit causes your token to advance off of that space, as rolling the Science die on ‘Chemistry’ (Science #5), or upgrading the tech card ‘clocks’ while on nanotechnology (Tech #11) might do? Do you still have the option of paying for the benefit before your resolve the space onto which you’ve moved?

      1. For instances like the benefit of Chemistry, the sequence of play becomes “nested.” Take the benefit of Chemistry by rolling the science die, take the benefit of the new space (and then the bonus), then go back to the bonus of Chemistry.

  152. My friends and I absolutely love this game but have disputed what the cubes signify when utilizing the Trader’s Civ card. A. When played, do the cubes represent an outpost, thus allowing you to roll the conquer die and count them towards your conquered territories when you do your income turns? B. When played for the section “empty space gives you points per surrounding enemy controlled hex” does this mean control it, or can someone conquer it since you were just getting the VP points for the surrounding conquered tiles?

    1. Placing the Trader’s cube is not a conquer action so you don’t get to roll the conquer dice. The Trader’s cube placed on an empty terrority does not mean that the Traders control that territory. Follow the directions if someone conquers it (you get the unselected conquer die from your opponent’s roll) and remember that a territory with two tokens on it cannot be conquered.

  153. Hi,
I have 2 questions about the game.

After I earned the “conquer the middle island” achievement (or any other ach.) do I get the 10 points every time I make an income turn?

And the second: I was in a situation where my capital city was fullfilled but I was still earning income buildings. Am I allowed to place an income building next to my capital city or in that case I can’t get any more income building?

    Thank you in advance!

    1. Hi Bertalan! The Achievements, including the Conquer Middle Island Achievement, are only a one-time bonus.

In the rare case that you have no place to place a building in your Capitol City, you can place a building off to the side of the mat, yes.

      1. Thank you for the reply!
May I ask one more question,

If I upgrade a tech card, is the circle or the square reward mandatory? Or can I just upgrade the tech card and not do what it says?

(For example I have only one tech card and in my income turn i have to upgrade a tech card and it says advance on a track without getting the reward and the bonus, but i don’t want to advance. Can I choose to upgrade but not advance?)

  154. Hi,
We reached a situation which we didn’t understand completely.
    1) Player 1 did the income turn and played the Dictatorship Tapestry card and chose a track ( say tech.) .
    2) Just after the player 1 income turn, player 2 does the income turn and uses the Tapestry card Oil Magnet.
Now, will player 2 be allowed to move on Tech. Track or not is my doubt.
    Thank ,you.

    1. Dictatorship prevents any other player from advancing on the chosen track. Player 1 chose the Tech track. Player 2 takes income and plays Oil Magnate. Player 2 would be unwise to choose the Tech track because no one but Player 1 can advance on that track. Player 2 should probably choose a different track. :)

  155. I started advancing on the science track after completely maxing out the exploration track. By rolling the science die, I got the exploration symbol. How do you handle that? Obviously I can’t advance, but it happened AGAIN when I took the chemistry action and rolled the science and was able to receive the benefit. In both situations I just took 5 victory points instead of doing anything, since that what you do if you max out the science track. Is this correct?

Love the game, and thanks for the help!

    1. Science die advances are optional in the best situations, and your situation just happens to be an unfortunate one. If you roll the science die and get a result you’ve already maxed out, you can’t advance and you take no other benefits. The 5 VPs are ONLY for the last space of the Science track.

      1. Hi, greetings from Brasil. My family is loving the game. We’re fans of SM. Euphoria, Scythe and now Tapestry are among the games we like the most. I have a question about landmarks and Futurists. I started in a spot with a landmark, but I didnt take it, as stated. Then I advanced one space. Later, in the science track I gained the rigth to move backwards one space in that track and reached that landmark again. Could I take it? Or can I take the LM only when I go beyond the tier division? Tks a lot!

        1. You only take the landmark when you enter a new tier (and if the landarmark hasn’t already been taken). So moving backwards in the same tier would not gain you the landmark. :)

  156. I am thinking of purchasing. I see it can be a game for one player, which on occasion would be great. But does that mean there is actually not a winner and non-winners when you play in a group ie is it about everyone just trying to establish their own story?

    1. Hi Kathleen! This is a competitive game, which means there is a winner after every game. In the solo game you play against an automated player we call an “Automa.”

  157. If the Herald is in the last income fees and uses it on dictatorship to stop movement on a track does that stop the movement on the track for the rest of the players for the rest of the game?

  158. Hi,
When using the Terraforming Tapestry card and placing a landmark over multiple impassable tiles (red dots) at one time, do you get 5 x VPs for each of the red dots covered, or only a total of 5 VP as it is a single building being used?
    Thanks.

  159. Is there an error on the automata income cards? I have 1 card with level 3 on one side and level 4 on the other, the other card says level 1 on both sides.

        1. Achievements are the three goals printed on the game board (be the first to reach the end of a track, conquer the center island, etc).

  160. I have a question about the “Terraforming” Tapestry card. If I use it to refill a full district by covering an impassable tile will I get the bonus for filling the district.

    1. The sections of your capitol city with dots already count as covered, so if Terraforming allows you to cover them, you don’t gain anything. So no, you can’t gain a bonus a second time in this way.

  161. Hello
I picked up Tapestry a few months ago after really enjoying Scythe. I have found Tapestry to be one of my favourite games since getting it as I always enjoyed old school RTS games.
My one issue is that my game board is quite warped. I have tried compressing it under weight for extended periods but it warps again quite quickly when taken out. Any advice on how to keep it flat?
Thanks and looking forward to your future games!

      1. Hi Joe. Thank you so much for your reply!
I’ll give it another month or so and if there’s no change I’ll fill out the replacement form.

        Thanks again!

  162. I landed on the technology track’s 9th tile (up arrow, circle). I had Lithium Ion Battery and Assembly Line in the circle row. I used the arrow first, to move the lithium ion batter up to the square row, triggering the “gain the benefit of where you are currently located on the board” ability”. Would that “gain the benefit” ability resolve next, or would the “circle” (the second half of the tile i landed on) resolve first before lithium ion’s ability? Or would it be my choice in what order those things happened?

    1. It’s not usually this hard to track, but you have to completely finish each step of the benefit before starting another one. So you upgraded a tech (arrow), take the benefit of that upgrade, then come back to the circle benefit. That middle step ends up being a fully upgraded Lithium-Ion Battery, so would you have to finish that before you come back to the circle benefit of the original action.

  163. Question for solo option:
“3. If the icon (toppled outpost) is on the tiebreaker card and the conquered terrain isn’t the middle island, place one of the Shadow Empire’s outposts toppled on the territory.”
This means that if tautoma first takes the middle island – it always puts ONLY its outpost?

  164. We just played this morning Tapestry for the first time. We are very pleased again with the game design of Jamey (we like Viticulture with Tuscany, Scythe and Charterstone and played this games, in particular Viticulture, countless times).
I have a simple question cause I don’t find a description for that little thing in the rulebook: We were wondering what happens with the outpost of the attacking player in case the conquer action fails. Will it still remain on the board, maybe topped, and is than no longer available for a further conquer action (cause the outposts are limited) or is it to return to the attackers supply?

    1. The only way for it to fail would be if your opponent has a trap card.

If that’s the case, the trap card tells you to topple the attacking piece instead of yours being toppled. The attacker still gets to roll the dice and get the ensuing result, and the defender gets a resource of their choice.

      Hope this helps.

      1. Yes, it helps. Of course the only way is using the trap card and it can’t be returned. Now I have a follow-up question respectively remark: Is it right that the toppled outpost counts for the defender as one of the two toppled outposts needed for the corresponding achievement (topple two opponent outposts)? That would imply the conquer action towards a territory with an opponents outpost should be more risky and maybe less atrractive.

          1. Yes, that counts as toppling an opponent’s outpost. I tried to phrase it in such a way to give players several options for toppling (not just conquering).

  165. When you are first to enter a new era and play the guilds card, what come first? The reward of first in new era or guilds card features?

    1. If you’re the first of your neighbors to enter a new era, before you play a tapestry card, gain the bonus resources. So you would have the resources before you play the Guilds card.

  166. Also in one of the gameplay videos from bbg they say you get 2 points for every row or column with the same buildings instead of one I cant find this in the rules is this true

    1. That sounds like the Architects civilization. Read the description on their civilization mat for more info. They get 2 points for every filled row or column where all the income buildings are identical, instead of getting 1 point simply for a filled row or column.

  167. Ok since I’m new to the game what exactly does the futurists do bc I’m confused on what it means after you advance all 4 tracks

    1. Hi Matthew! As it says on the Futurists civilization mat, you advance all four tracks exactly 4 spaces. Do not gain benefits, bonuses, or landmarks. Also, gain 1 of each resource.

If any of that doesn’t make sense, go ahead and ask specific questions and I’ll do my best to answer them. Also there’a great Facebook group that can answer questions at all times of day here:
      https://www.facebook.com/groups/tapestryboardgame/

      1. Ok I get it now I was confused about the end of track being the limit I wasnt adding the fact that could happen if you acquire it in the middle of the game sorry lol

      2. Hi Joe,

With the Arts and Architecture there now are 5 tracks, is it still the same, you advance on all tracks?

        Kind regards
        Willy

        1. That’s correct. The Futurists say “Advance on each track exactly 4 spaces.” The arts track is included in that statement.

      1. So if i progress in tier 1 at the military track and im already in certain spot on exploration track, i can use the batteries each time i pay the cost to advance on military track and collect stuff on the exploration track throught batteries feature?

        Sorry if asking obvius

        1. No, you only gain that benefit from the batteries once (when you upgrade the tech card to the top row). The note about only using it once per turn is because there are some ways in the game to repeat abilities, and this particular ability is too powerful if you repeat it more than once in the same turn. But most likely you will only be able to use it once during the entire game (at the moment you upgrade the batteries tech card to the top row).

          1. But if i upgrade it in income turn, use it, and move my token to nanotech in advance turn, can i use the ability of batteries 2nd time after the income turn because those are seperate from eachother

  168. I see you guys are about halfway done with the Tapestry Expansion. Any idea whichever a replacement space tile, the one with missing conquer tower, will be included or not? Just curious — if you do, will we know beforehand?

  169. hi,i have a question about a tech card that allow player to replace a “current tapestry” card.
For example if inventors enter a third era and use their ability to upgrade a tech card that gives benefit: replace a current tapestry card,do they replace 2nd era tapestry card because they don’t have a tapestry card in their current third era slot?

    1. You can only play/replace tapestry cards in your current era, so in that case, you would play the card in your era 3 slot.

      1. I was playing yesterday and I reach the space exploring on the exploring track, and I got the space tile that allow you to play a tapestry card on top of the current one. My question is I still was at makers of fires era, can I then play the tapestry card on top of that one? Also when you reach the IV era in the war track and still on the fires makers can you play it on top? If not what you can do?

        1. There’s no way you should be getting space tiles during the first era. You can only advance a few times at most on the exploration track before you’re forced to pass into the second era.

          1. I was using the solitarist every time I explore I got a resource plus the science and completing sections on my capital city, I got plenty resources. That’s why I got this question

          2. I agree with Josh, I don’t think it’s possible to explore space in your first era. But if somehow you were the get the effect of “play a tapestry card on top of your current Tapestry” in your first era, then “maker of fire” would count as your current tapestry and you would play a card on top of that.

  170. I noticed that the board is bend in a way that it lifts each 1/4 of the board from center, making playing unpleasant, is there any way i can receive another board by mail? I can send the board with bumbs to prove my words and not just trying to trick me another one.

    1. Hi Petri! That’s why we have the replacement parts page. But I can’t promise a new board will solve the problem. What often happens after opening cardboard is it will acclimate to your local humidity and sometimes warp. Usually time will allow it to warp back, but if waiting doesn’t fix it, you can lay it flat and put it under something very heavy for a few days. The last option is to put it in an oven at a very low temperature for a short amount of time. If you’re still experiencing troubles, go ahead and fill out that replacement parts form. Thanks!

  171. On the Level cards,(2) I have one card, which on both sides are Level 1. Is there a Level 2. because the second card, reads Level 3-4.

  172. This comment dont belong here, but i post it any way. I just finshed playing my first Tapestry game, and have to say, it was epic!
In the last advance turn before the 5th income turn i was 1 step away from getting the teknology track last space. I had 3 resource 1 bag 1 food and 1 culture, I had a tile with bag, but didnt had a chance to put in the map.

By paying one resource in military and one in sience track i was able to put 2 buildings in to my capital city, completing 1 district i choose the bag and reached the end of tekno track.
Coz i was playing the mystics and had choose 7 tekno cards and 1 finished track, by the 4 resource i got from the last space from tekno track i buy my self the 2 tekno card from the 1 tier of that track coz it was what i choose to advance from begining and by those i score 20VP and it was enought to get me by my friend.

Thanks wor this awesome game! Cant wait the next game session, have a nice day ya all! Bye

  173. In the rules there are in Income section this: 3. Gain 1VP for each tech card next to your income mat. Is this an typo, coz the rule book says to put them next to capital city mat?

    1. Yes, it’s a typo. It should say capital city mat. It’s referring to each tech card you have.

  174. Domino effect on the conquer map and imbalance of rewards on the civilization tracks.

This weekend we played this game for the first time with some experienced board gamers and let’s just say the impression of the game is mixed.

It looks great, but many rules seem to prevent getting into a flow and we also found that certain aspects of the game do not really get to flourish like we hoped to.

First problem we noted was the domino effect on the conquer map. When 2 players meet each other on the map, the first player who then attacks the other can simply overrun the other player in the turns to come. There is no option to defend, nor to reconquer the tile. The only stop is the home base because it already contains 2 pieces,
    Are we playing this wrong?

We also noted that 2 of the 3 bonuses (first to conquer 2 players and first to reach the central island) basically favours those roles who favour combat/exploration above science/tech. It would be more in balance is there would also be bonuses for e.g. the first to have 5 tech cards and first to upgrade a tech card to level 3,

We also noticed that the home town gets populated extremely slow and the rewards are minimal compared to e.g. conquering. Even a role like Architect hardly brings any added points. The rewards are minimal.

In our game, we just managed to complete 1 or 2 tracks and 2 other tracks still on sector I. Max 50% of the all the houses on the home city. Most of us only reached about 3 rows and 3 cols max for scoring. The first 3 era’s you are even lucky to score at all in the home town, seems a miss,

We had a sense that the amount of goods you get is just slightly too little to get in a flow and make some decent play. We just reached 200 points. Seems little with the board indicating 400 can be reached. We are used to various games with “limited resource” having you to make choices but we found that here you just have to extend so much on that 1 resource important for your 1 track of interrest, that it’s nearly impossible to explore all tracks. And because there are so many points in exploration/combat, the tech tracks and especially thr science track gets underused.

We also wondered why there is no technology-level requirement for the space tiles. How can you go to space without having invested in technology? Putting a requirement like level III tech required would force everybody to also spend more time on the tech track. Something similar between the conquer track and science track could be done, like last field on conquer requires level III science?

Regarding the manual, a picture of the tableau with the buildings would help. Now it is quite a puzzle to figure out which is which. Perhaps some color coding or numbering on the bottom side of the foot could help too.

The game looks beautiful but we felt It has serious imbalance issues, even without the effect of the roles. Finally, we thought that some of the compensation of the roles seemed quite massive, e.g. 10 or 15 VP per opponent for a start? With 4 players that is a massive amount of VP to catch up by the others?
As final comment we felt that the game limits growing too much, mostly due to the extreme lack of resource, but also e.g. that many of the science dice don’t give you any reward of tile advancing on. And you really don’t want to skip a tech tile without reward nor the other tracks.

    1. Eliza, not to be rude, but I dont think your “team” fully grasped this game based on your break down. Play it a few more times and you might get other thoughts. I’ve played about 6 times now and each time I’ve rolled with a different strategy, and each time I have scored over 200 points (best so far was 279).

I have gone with games where I barely filled my Capital, less the houses on the income matt, and games where I had all 16 of 18 rows/columns filled.

The thing I like best about the game is the variety. The fact that you cant do it all, and you will fail if you try to do it all.

The bonuses are balanced, I’ve won games ignoring them (first to topple etc) and lost games where I got all 3 for their max VPs as I was first to do them.

Just my two cents, but if you’ve only played once and you tried to do it all, then I feel you were playing all wrong with this masterpiece of a game.

      1. Agree that it doesn’t quite sound like you have the rules down completely right.

“When 2 players meet each other on the map, the first player who then attacks the other can simply overrun the other player in the turns to come. There is no option to defend, nor to reconquer the tile.“
You can defend by adding a second outpost to your tile with an existing outpost, no?

        1. Sebastian, no? The rules state that a player can not post a 2nd outpost on a tile he/she already controls.

          1. You’re right. (I think I was thinking of the isolationist. Should have checked before replying, my bad.)
Well, such ‘overrun’ hasn’t happened in any of my games, and I guess avoiding it would need to be part of any conquest strategy.

      2. Joshua,

There may be a lot of variety, but in our view the game has imbalance issues and lack of reward issues. Indeed, you can play different strategies, most likely driven by your civilization role, but some roles are significantly more rewarding than others.

Taking again the Architect as an example, since your home town will unlikely generate anything before era 3, the reward for that role comes in late and is rather poor. The role addendum sort of tries to fix that by giving the player a head start of many VP but this is not rewarding. It just feels kind of cheating when you get 40 VP as Architect or even 60 VP for the “Chosen ones”, ahead of others when playing with 5 people. This massive points fixing is a clear indication that certain strategies, linked to to those roles, are weak in concept.

I myself have played the game now twice. First time with lesser experienced boardgamers and 2nd time with seasoned boardgamers. We noticed the domino effect on the conquer map also the first time and the home town really seemed to grow slow and late. With the seasoned group, we felt the same and tried to analyze where the perceived shortcomings were.

All I can do is provide our feedback.

  175. Question: The Heralds are only supposed to be able to use their ability to replicate when-played abilities, but the Espionage card is a when-played card that allows you to copy any this-era card in play. Can you copy an espionage card and use it to gain the benefits of a this-era card?

  176. What happens if you play a Dictator card, and use the advancement to learn the nuclear bomb? You would cover the dictator card, which the rules say nullifies the covered card, but Dictator is a when‐played card, so it technically took effect already. Will the Dictator card still prevent military advancement until that player’s next turn?

    1. If you cover the Dictator card, it’s ongoing ability of “Opponents may not advance on that track until after your next turn” is nullified. As Nuclear Bomb is explained on the reference sheet, “only the new card is active.”

      1. Thank you so much! It was really important to the game, and the strategy for my whole game hinged on that answer. I really appreciate the timely reply.

  177. “Unless otherwise specified in the reference guide, the benefits can be taken in either order.”

This should be specified on the reference guide somewhere. As many of the actions specify “In any order,…”, it stands to reason actions that don’t state that must be followed in order. I don’t remember the exact scenario I encountered, but I believe it was the Nuclear Bomb. I scored by exploration track, then played a tapestry which was going to result in me advancing more on the exploration track. It was not clear that I could play the tapestry first if I wanted.

    1. For the example you provided, a specific order wasn’t stated on the reference guide, so per the rulebook, you could gain those benefits in any order. That’s the default–we don’t need to repeat it over and over on the reference guide.

  178. If you get a futurist during the game, it’s too powerful for every track to go four levels. In that case, you will receive four levels of benefits for all tracks.

  179. Do you get the landmark even if you advanced to that space by means where it says you dont get the effect or bonuses? I.e. You’re in the last spot of level 1 on exploration. You move up to the first spot on science, roll the science die and it comes up exploration. This moves you into the first spot on level 2, with the lighthouse landmark. Do you get this, or not because it says you dont get effects or bonuses?

    1. You always get the landmark if you’re the first person to reach that tier. An effect has to specifically mention that you do not gain the landmark for that to happen (like the Futurists). Gaining the landmark is neither a benefit nor a bonus. So yes, you would gain the landmark.

  180. Can the Isolationists conquer the center island with their special ability, thus making it so no one else can conquer it for the bonus 5 points for being second?

    1. That is correct. Isolationists may use their special ability to place a second token on the middle island if they’re the first ones there, “preventing that territory from being conquered in the future.”

  181. I was on the “Space Shuttle” space of the Exploration track, and had to roll the science die but without benefits. I got the exploration track, which moved me onto the “Instellar Travel” space, without getting the space tiles.

If I then advance to the “Warpgates” space by playing two food, what benefit do I get? I didn’t pick up space tiles in the previous step, so how can I place them? Thanks.

    1. If you don’t have any space tiles to place, you can’t explore them with later steps. But remember, all advancements with the Science die are optional. So you can roll the die then choose not to advance without the benefit. :)

      1. Ah. Thanks Joe – I’d forgotten that I don’t have to take the advancement which comes from the science die. That solves the problem!

Loving the game, by the way. Third play now, and a first win for me.

  182. There are four places for Tapestry cards on our income mats But we shouldn’t play Tapestry cards in final income turn and we don’t have Tapestry cards to be able to play in first income turn (we earn our first tapesty card in the forth stage of income but we can play it on 2nd stage of income)so do we have to only play three tapastry cards on each income mat or we start our game with a tapestrt cards?

    1. Hi Lili! You are correct that you start the game with an Income Turn which will give you your first Tapestry card in hand. Then everyone will play Advance Turns until they’d like to take another Income Turn, during which they’ll place their first Tapestry card in the space after Maker of Fire on your player mat. The game will continue until you have filled all the Tapestry card slots and you then you take your final income turn. Does that make sense?

I often watch rules videos for new games when I’m learning them. I recommend this video to get the gist of how to play Tapestry: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5FzMpkbasM

  183. When a player draws space tiles, do they keep them face up so that they know what the benefit will be when they play one, or are they kept face down until played?

Since the space on the exploration track initially has you draw three and play one, I wasn’t sure if the intent was that the exploration benefit is a surprise.

  184. Based on the red dots in my Capitol city and landmarks already built there’s no space to build a new landmark. Can I build over a red dot or do I not get to build another landmark?

If I can build a landmark over a red dot, can I do that at any point even if there are other viable placements available?

      1. Thanks Jamey! My wife and I love your work. Scythe, Charterstone and now Tapestry are some of our all time favorite games.

  185. Hey question, if we roll the science die (with benefits) and choose not to progress forward (or can’t). Do we still get to take the benefit/action of the space we are on. (I.e.End of track)
    Thanks.

    1. No, you only gain the benefit if (a) there’s no X on the research icon and (b) you choose to advance.

  186. We have enjoyed playing the game a few times now. We still have one mental block that I’m hoping you can help clear up. We are all perplexed that tapestry cards & technology cards do not provide benefit for the remainder of the game. I was hoping you could give some context why it was decided that they would only be one time or only during a specific era. I am aware that you get VP credit for the count of cards but logically it seems like you would continue to gain benefit from your history (tapestry card) or invented technology (tech cards) on a reoccurring basis during the game. I’m sure that was an intentional design consideration. Can you help us get past this mental block?

    1. The reason I designed them that way is that they’re meant to reflect important events and periods in your civilization’s history. Like, consider Age of Steam. That was a specific period of history that only impacted period, as civilizations then moved on to other things than steam power.

As for technology cards, you’re right that certain technologies are used across long periods of time. However, we found in playtesting Tapestry that if we gave players ongoing abilities to remember, they simply forgot to use them time and time again.

  187. In a combat. If the player defend himself with a trap card.

Can i get over it if I have also a trap card too?

      1. C’mon Jamey – that would be an awesome addition to the rules (“trace buster, buster”). We just had the argument that this rule existed, only to find out that it only existed in our very active imaginations. Feel free to make it reality though :D

        (ps. love the game!)

  188. Hi Jamey,

Thank you for making such wonderful games. My friends and I were playing Tapestry last night and came upon an interesting situation. I had already finished my final income turn and was one space away from completing the technology track. My husband, just starting his final round, played Age of Discovery tapestry card, and potentially could have advanced me to the end of the track. Turns out he didn’t, but if he did, would I have gained the end of track achievement? Or is my game completely over, and I can’t gain any achievements?

    Thanks and Merry Christmas!

    1. Jenny: Thanks for your question. Since your game has ended, you cannot gain anything else (from other players or from yourself). So your token wouldn’t move at all.

      1. What about civ abilities like the Historians? If you could not gain points after income round five, there would not be any point in uncovering the last square on your player board. Is there something that I am missing?

        1. Here’s what the rules say about civilization passive abilities at the end of the game: “If other players still have turns after your game has
ended, you may still gain victory points from passive civilization
abilities, but you cannot gain anything else.”

          1. Hi Joe, say you’re playing against the inventors, you’ve done your final income, but they upgrade one of your tech cards that would net you VP (be it direct VP or per space on a track VP, etc), do you collect these VP?

          2. Tech card effects are not classified as “passive civilization abilities,” so you can’t gain anything from an upgraded tech after your game has ended.

    1. Benefits on the advancement tracks are mandatory (see note about this at the bottom of page 2 in the rulebook).

      1. Thank you! I appreciate the reply. Everybody I have shared the game with so far has enjoyed it a great deal.

  189. Hello, I have a question: If I use the science dice without benefits/bonus to move to a place with a Landmark and I’m the first, I’ll win the landmark for being the first there or I’ll lose it because of I moved there with the dice without benefits?

      1. With Futurist do you gain all 4 landmarks at the start of the game when the tokens are move the spot 4 of each advancement track?

  190. Another one :-) In Solo Play with Historians, can i gives a token to the Shadow Empire ? If no, Can I Benefit the Historians’ Capacity When the Shadow Empire Gains a Landmark? (Because it gives the Landmark to Automa). Thank you

    1. Here’s what the Historians civ ability says:

“Whenever any opponent with your token gains a landmark, gain all of these exposed benefits.”

Here’s what the Automa rulebook says about the Automa/SE gaining landmarks:

“If either bot gains a landmark, place it in the [landmark icon] box on the Automa’s income mat.”

Note that the Historians rule says “gain” while the Automa/SE rule distinguishes between the Automa and the SE gaining landmarks. Thus, when the SE gains a landmark the Automa doesn’t gain it. The SE is kind enough, though, to loan the landmark to the Automa for income turn scoring .

So, if you have given a token only to the Automa, then the Historians ability is not triggered when the SE gains a landmark.

If you want the Historians ability to trigger when the SE gains a landmark you must give the SE a token.

Hope this clears it up, if not let me know.

      1. Ok it’s clear, I’ll put a token on a corner of the table for SE, and we’ll say it’s his board :-) thx again !

      1. I had the same question. Maybe in a further update of the adjustment sheet you could write ‘opponent’ instead of ‘player’? That would make it much clearer at least for me.:)

        1. ..Just saw that for the ‘The Chosen’ it already reads ‘opponent’, only for the architects its still ‘players’. So I really think it makes sense to Change that.:)

  191. Hi. One questions: If I roll 4x dice (at the end of Science) and first dice is “Science”, what should I do with my token? Is the token out of track? When second dice is also “Science” I can get second time 5 points for crossing the border?

    1. The token doesn’t move, and you gain 5 VP instead. Do that once per die (treat each die separately but consecutively).

        1. Hi, love the game. Just had one small confusion with the rules.

The income phase turn states you MUST play a tapestry card, but it seems to be possible to reach the income stage with no tapestry cards as the invasion section doesn’t restrict the defender from dropping a Trap if it’s the only card they hold.

We’ve so far simply house ruled you draw a blind tapestry card off the top and immediately put it into play if you must play one and have none, but I thought I’d see if there was an official ruling on it.

          1. Karl: Thanks for your question! It’s actually noted on page 2 of the rules: “In the rare case that you do not have a tapestry card in hand, place the top card of the tapestry deck face down on your income mat.”

      1. A related question on reaching the end of a track and tokens “pushed off the track”:
In addition to the last field of the science track, there are other situations that trigger the roll of the science die, other fields on the science track, and, I believe, various other situations that may lead to a token being advanced. What happens if a token is already at the end of the respective track so that advancing it would “push it off the track”? Does the owner of that token always gain 5 VPs? If so does the token remain in its position on the last field of the respective track and can the 5VPs be gained more than once?

        1. Alien Biology is a one-time action, not an ongoing effect. You can only gain the 5VP during that specific advancement action.

          1. But irrespective of “Alien Biology”, what happens if my token is at the end of the, say, Exploration track, I get to roll the science die, and it shows “Exploration” ?

          2. You cannot advance beyond the last step in the track. If that happened, the science die effect would be forfeit (no rerolls).

  192. Thanks for another great game! Two quick questions: 1. If a benefit moves me to another space, can I still take the bonus under it? 2. If I move to a space in a way that doesn’t allow me to gain the benefit/bonus, do I still gain the landmark on it? Thanks a lot!

  193. When you reach the end of the Technology track and remove your token to some other track, for the purposes of the The Chosen civilization, do they now become the leader on that track if they were second and then get to score it during income?

      1. So does this Phantom Token count for track scoring such as “Eachh space of Technology track” even if you have already gone off the track with Singularity???

By the way, this is now my wife’s and my favorite game. We have played it every day for the past few weeks and your beautiful creation is helping us get through our isolation during this troubling time in the world.

Also I just got our highest score ever with Heralds at a whopping 402 points!!! (412 if scoring Tech track position counts even after I have advanced beyond the tech track. ;)

        Thanks for the great game.

        1. I’m glad you’re enjoying Tapestry, Adam!

Yes, if you score for each technology space you’ve advanced, you will count the whole track because “this track still counts as completed” after advancing to AI Singularity.

    1. Also. When the Automa removes its token from the end of the tech track, does it still score that track as 12 X ? Or does it not?

      1. @Mike, the Automa does not remove it’s token from the end of the track. The Automa only gets the benefits that are in the table on page 3 and the icons on space 12 of the tech track are not in the table and so the Automa gets nothing.

  194. When playing “Marriage of State,”
    1. Does it affect every advancement on the specified track, or is it a one time effect?
    2. If the benefit is a choice between two (for us, science roll or science building), does the player with “MoS” have to take the same benefit or his choice? If the same (here science roll), does the player have take the same roll, or would he get another roll?

    1. 1. It’s a “this era” ability, so it’s for every advancement.
      2. The benefit is as stated (i.e., roll the science die), so the MoS gains the full benefit (they don’t copy the exact choice/result of the other player).

      1. We have played 3 times this weekend and two had this card and we played as you suggest and it totally skewed the game (because it was played for the final run for the end of track each time and so it is obvious what to pick and unless that person abandons their entire game strategy there is no defence). We are considering removing the card or making it was time as it is too powerful

        1. Same for us. Yesterday I played the MoS card in the last era and chose a player on the science track. He could have either decided to abandon his whole strategy and to loose completely or to go on. As he decided to go on I almost overtook the other players on the score track. We have now decided to remove this card from the game as this happened before.
Nevertheless, we really like this game and we will test how it works without this special card.

  195. Greetings from NZ. Played first game last night and really enjoyed it. We have a timing question. If you gain a new civilisation during phase 1 of income turn, can you trigger the new civs “at start of income phase” ability? The player had the Leaders civilisation.

  196. When toppling outposts and gaining the achievment, is it necessary to currently have two outposts toppled, or to have two outposts toppled at one point in the game? A player used revolution to reverse some of his toppled outposts, and a second player lost his one toppled outpost; however, the second player later toppled again, never having more than one toppled outpost at a time. Should that player gain the achievment?

  197. I noticed that when setting up the Automa game, there are a list of civilizations that are to be removed first. Would you recommend that these same civilizations be removed when playing a 2-player human game, or is there something that is unique about the Automa that makes these civilizations unplayable? Thanks :)

  198. Just received the game last night and have my first game planned for tonight! I have a question after going through the rules a few times. On the back side of the reference guide, the top row square benefit for Lithium-Ion Battery has the caveat “Use at most 1x/turn.” No other card has this same caveat. How would this be used more than the one time when it is upgraded?

    1. There are some abilities on the board and cards that let you repeat abilities, and this particular ability can lead to some overpowered loops if used more than once per turn.

  199. When you advance into a new tier, do you have to place the landmark before taking the benefit (and/or bonus)? An asap answer would be nice, but i know its late on your side of the globe

    1. Here’s a quote from Jamey on BGG:
“You gain the landmark first, as it happens as soon as your token advances to the new tier. Usually it doesn’t matter–I wait until the end of my turn to place it so I don’t slow down other players–but sometimes it might.”
      https://boardgamegeek.com/article/32963481#32963481

There’s a great community on Facebook in the Tapestry group if you ever need quick answers. :)

  200. I bought the Dutch version of Tapestry today! I have been really looking forward to getting my hands on this game. It looks amazing. Is there any reason why the image on the back of the maps and the civilization cards is printed upside down?

    1. There is no reason, though it doesn’t matter, as the backside of the mats are on the table when you play–you can’t see them.

  201. I just bought the game in Spanish today.
I thought that the misprint on a space tile wouldn’t be on the different languages editions but It seems I was wrong.

    1. The Alchemist’s power reads: “Each time the final results of this ability would push you off the end of a track, gain 5 points.” So if you roll technology and don’t bust, you may move the cube that is no longer at the end of the track. In other words you don’t gain 5 points because the cube would not be in a position to move “off the end of a track.”

  202. Hey Jamey,

Wasn’t sure if you were going to do Tabletopia stuff anymore? Will this see Tabletopia? I’m disabled, and can not leave the house, so I use Tabletopia to play your games overseas with other disabled folks. We have a large (for us anyway) gaming group through facebook.

We have your Wingspan DLC and it gets a tonne of play.

Even if you aren’t planning on doing that anymore, thanks for providing us with hundreds of hours of amazing content.

  203. Another Isolationists question: on their final income turn, do they have to have conquest towers on each section of their largest landmass?

    1. No, but if they don’t have an outpost on a territory, they cannot count that territory for their special scoring.

      1. I may not have phrased the question correctly. If they have outposts on 2 of the sectors, but the land mass covers 3 sectors, does it count for three sectors in their special scoring?

          1. You control 2 of those territories, so you would use 2 as your number for the VP chart.

  204. Sequence question: when isolationists conquer neighbor, does their cube placement prevent the trap action, or does the trap action preempt the cube placement?

    1. The Isolationists only place cubes on empty territories they conquer, so trap cards cannot be played against them when they do this.

  205. The neighbour symbol: you as a first when entering new era (big bloke in the middle). But the small ones (prerequisites): any one of your neighbours? Both? And/or yourself?

  206. When playing with the Nomads, placing a building on an empty territory adjacent to one you control gives you control of that territory.
When you consequently take a conquer action: do you get to place an outpost on a territory adjacent to one of your buildings?! (Rules clearly state you may place an outpost adjacent to a territory you control) Seems like too big of an advantage…

    1. By the way: thanks for yet another brilliant addition to the Stonemaier family! As much as we love Scythe, with its expansions and its campaign, we like Wingspan and an occasional between2cities and are we in love with the latest prodigy! Many thanks :)

  207. Beautiful game, guys, but tricky situation today.

In one turn, I advanced to AI Singularity on the Tech track, then moved that cube to the military track. In the next turn, I advance to Alien Biology. I roll Technology on the science die. Do I gain 5 VP? Alien Bio says “would push you off the track”; AI singularity says the track counts as complete, but since I don’t have a marker there it lacks the potential to be pushed off.

    1. @Jamey Stegmaier – Would you care to comment on this? I too am wondering about this case?

      1. I’m so sorry, Andrew! I missed this comment (Robert, thanks for bringing it to light). You would indeed gain 5 VP in this situation (since there’s no token to move on the tech track).

  208. Just finished playing our first game! Found an interesting combo that I want to know if we are understanding correctly. On my last income turn I advanced the Printing Press tech card to the top square, that allowed me to play a tapestry card. The tapestry card I had was Dictatorship. Because this is my last turn of the game, is everyone else locked out of the track I chose to use for the rest of the game since I don’t have a “next turn”?

    1. That would lock everyone out of that track until your next hypothetical turn, but then they could proceed as normal.

  209. With the missing Conquer icon on the space tile, is there a file or image of the icon I can download in order to make my own transfer? The Etsy option is great, but shipped to Australia it’s almost $7.

  210. Here is a situation that happened to me. I had the same amount of Landmarks as another player. I took an Advanced Action from “Anti-Aircraft Defense” into “Nuclear Bomb” on the Military Track.
Does the adding of the new Landmark happen simultaneously with “Gaining Explore VP” and “Playing another Tapestry Card” actions?
If it’s simultaneously would I be able to put the new Landmark down on my Capital City and then do the “Playing another Tapestry Card” action to get the 12VP on the “Age of Wonders” Tapestry Card?

      1. On this: Can you pick what order to take those Benefits?
Can I play a tapestry card, then get my exploration points?

  211. INVENTORS civilization—If they put their token on a middle-row tech card and thereby upgrade it to the top row, do they then immediately take it? Or only when the owning player does an upgrade to the top row?

      1. Is there ever a situation where inventors promote another player’s tech from middle to top level by placing a cube and get the top row benefit? Does promotion from middle to top by any means always result in the card changing owners or do inventors sometimes get only the top benefit instead of the card?

        1. “Is there ever a situation where inventors promote another player’s tech from middle to top level by placing a cube and get the top row benefit?”

          Definitely! They can do that.

“Does promotion from middle to top by any means always result in the card changing owners or do inventors sometimes get only the top benefit instead of the card?”

          Yes, always.

          1. Clarification questions on “Inventors”:

If a tech card that currently belongs to another player gets upgraded from middle to top row because of “Inventors”, first the original owner of the card gains the benefit, then the player who played “Inventors” gets the benefit, and then the player who played “Inventors” gets the tech card (now with their token on it) and places it into its bottom tech row. Correct?

Also, if the top row benefit is a landmark, this landmark only gets awarded once, i.e., to the original owner of the tech card if the card was in their middle row before “Inventors” was played. Correct?

  212. On the Lithium Ion Battery, how often can the square benefit be used? The Ref says once per turn. Is that supposed to be once per Era?

The same icon appears on “Academic Research” on the science track, but the Ref says that is a one-time benefit.

    1. It’s once per turn (following the normal game rules of when you gain the square benefit). Basically, if you find a loophole that lets you activate that square ability and then activate it again on the same turn, you can’t do that. In the vast majority of cases, you will gain the square benefit once per game.

      1. I understand that one can only use the square ability of the Lithium-Ion Battery once per turn.
But would it be possible to use Nanotechnology -> 1st upgrade Eyeglasses, score the victory pints for Tech cards, and 2nd score all Tech cards a 2nd time through the second ability of Nanotechnologies: ‘gain a square Tech benefit of one Tech card, i.e. Eyeglasses’?
The reason I think the second case is possible because it gets score a max. of 2 times, where as with the Lithium-Ion Battery there exist the possibilities of an endless loop.

  213. If a player advances on the exploration track, the benefit is place a tile but the player has no unexplored hexes adjacent to a territory they control do they not place a tile?

  214. >>> it makes no mention of replacing the civ cards with the solo civ cards

Step 1 in the Automa rulebook setup section is this: “Choose a color for the Automa. Give it the following components and nothing else:”

Note the words “nothing else”. Since the normal civ mats are not mentioned in the list that follows, the Automa does not get one. Step 1d states that the Automa gets an Automa civ card.

    >>> and whether the Shadow Empire receives a civ card.

This is covered in step 2 of the setup procedure: “Choose a color for the Shadow Empire. Give it the following components and nothing else:”

The list that follows lists neither a normal or an Automa civ and so the Shadow Empire doesn’t get either.

    >>> if the solo civ card mentions a favorite track, does that supercede the prescribed science die roll?

The science die roll determines what Automa civ card the Automa gets. See step 1d. The science die roll and the favorite track will be the same.

    >>> During turn 1, I’m assuming the Automa takes its income turn, but does it flip decision cards that end up doing nothing (beyond marking the passage of time)?

The Automa does take the first income turn.

The Automa doesn’t draw cards during its income turns except if tiebreaking is needed in which case the deck is reshuffled before the advancement turns begin and so there’s no passage of time in the form of card draws.

I hope this clears things up.

    1. Thanks for the quick reply, Morten. It does. I missed the clause about the Automa Civ card. However, the rules do state under “A Bot Turn” #2 that the Automa draws cards, which could then trigger an “Income Turn” which apparently is a turn within a turn? It would be helpful if the rules clearly explicated that no decision cards are drawn in the first Automa income turn.

Despite this, I will say you guys did a great job with the solo play! Allowed me to get all my f***ups out of the way before I teach my friends how to play!

      1. First, thank you for your kind words. I appreciate them.

Second, let me explain how the rulebook is intended to be read for the first bot turn.

For human players you there’s a rule stating that you don’t go through the normal turn procedure in your first turn (bottom of page 1), instead you jump straight to the section on income turns.

Since this rule is not explicitly overridden in the Automa rules it’s still in effect as described in this rule in the first column of the Automa rulebook: “Any rule not explicitly overridden here is still in effect”.

We could have added a rule stating that the Automa goes straight to income, but that would have been a copy-paste of the same rule in the core rulebook and if we start copying rules from the core rulebook we should copy all of them (or players might come to think that since some rules are copied, those that are not are not in effect), which would mean that the Automa rulebook would contain the full core game rulebook. That’s something we don’t want to do for various reasons.

If the bots did start by following the normal turn procedure instead of jumping straight to income the consequence would be that they’d take at least 3 advancement turns before taking their first income turn.

I hope this explanation makes sense.

  215. 2 solo mode questions: (1) The rulebook mentions it is played exactly the same way as a 3 player mode, with only the exceptions listed in the solo rulebook. However, it makes no mention of replacing the civ cards with the solo civ cards and whether the Shadow Empire receives a civ card. I’m left to assume only the Automa receives a solo only civ card. Side question, if the solo civ card mentions a favorite track, does that supercede the prescribed science die roll? (2) During turn 1, I’m assuming the Automa takes its income turn, but does it flip decision cards that end up doing nothing (beyond marking the passage of time)?

    1. Do such underlying cards still count as 1 when counting tapestry cards in hand and in play for scoring for VP?

  216. Question on the “Espionage” card… *POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT*

If someone else has played a tapestry on top of another tapestry, is the tapestry card underneath valid as a choice for Espionage?

  217. If you reach the end of a track on the main board are you allowed to pay the cost to reactivate the last ability once more or do you just have one less option to make?

  218. This must be obvious to everyone except me, but on some Technology cards that provide a landmark (e.g. Barn), there is a specific resource shown with a “neighbor” requirement symbol. What is the actual requirement condition necessary before being able to upgrade the card and gain the landmark?

    1. Just got this from the Tapestry FB group so answering my own question. “Breeding” is under one of the red income buildings on your income mat. So, you or one of your immediate neighbors have to have that uncovered for the prerequisite”.

  219. Hey there Jamey, great job on Tapestry, really been enjoying playing it!
Just had a question on the first benefit of the 2nd Tier of the Military Track, “Standing Army”. It says, “Gain 1 worker and gain 1 VP per territory tile in your supply.” So if I have 5 territory tiles in my supply, does that mean I’d gain 5 workers and 5 VP, or does it mean gain 1 worker and 5 VP? Thanks!

    1. Thanks Jeremiah! Because the word “gain” is repeated, they’re two separate clauses: (a) Gain 1 worker and (b) gain 1 VP per territory tile in your supply.

      1. Player order. So if it’s your turn and your action caused it, you get it. Otherwise clockwise order from whoever took the action that caused it. So player to the right of the two ties people, as s/he is first player to the left of the one who’s turn caused the tie.

  220. Interesting situation arose during recent play. I played dictatorship during my income phase and locked the technology track. The next player was in era 4, only had coin resource available, and was tier 2 or above on all tracks. We decided that if unable to play an advancement turn you must take an income turn which prematurely ended his game. Was this correct?

    1. Michael: It’s a weird situation, but you’re right–if you can’t take an advancement turn, you must take an income turn.

  221. Hey Jamey, When does an “era” end for purposes of collecting a tapestry’s “this era” bonus? When you declare a new income turn or when the new tapestry is played? The timing can effect how a civilization bonus gets counted.

      1. There is a technology card “Play new tapestry card” when you do this action: if the card below is an “this era” card will this card get inactive the same way as on the miltary track? It’s not explicitly stated for the technology card.

        1. Maikel: If you play a “this era” tapestry card, you play it on top of your current tapestry card (which, if it has a “this era” ability, is no longer in effect). You’ll only look at the top tapestry card if you ever stack multiples due to something like this tech card.

  222. I’ve played it against the Automa twice so far, and, boy, can they be brutal! I’ve lost both games, although the second one I got a bit closer. Love the components (textured boards?? More please!), the feel of the miniatures, the capital city “mini-game”, how varied the civilizations are, and, of course, Automa’s Factory work :) Can’t wait to try it with other players, but I can see myself playing this over and over for a long time to come. Thank you again for an incredible design.

  223. Got mine yesterday and I gotta say, the components are top-notch! Can’t wait to get it to the table tonight! Great job SM Games, keep up the fantastic work!

  224. I think I found another misprint, possibly. On my copy of the tapestry Exploitation, it says “If you don’t, gain {victory wreath with no inner symbol}”. Is there supposed to be a number of victory points, or a symbol inside the wreath?

    1. It says, “If you do, don’t gain [VP].” It’s correct. It’s just saying you don’t gain VP if you exploit.

      1. Whar points you would usually get by placing an exploration tile on the board ? I mean, which exactly points do I not get by exploiting ? Conquiring die? Income building points when scoring ?

        1. If you don’t “exploit” then you gain the normal points for placing a territory tile. This is explained on Page 3 of the instructions under “Exploration.” Basically 1VP per side of the tile with at least 1 aligned terrain.

  225. If you have all of a type of income building already in your city and you do an action that would gain you one more of that same type do you get the 10 VP that is uncovered on the income mat or no?

    1. No, you just don’t gain anything. And you don’t gain stuff under buildings when you gain them–you only gain that stuff during income turns.

    1. It shouldn’t ever happen simultaneously, as even if more than one player advances at the same time, it happens clockwise (starting with the current player).

  226. I have a question about a tapestry card named Mercantilism. I don’t know if there are other similar tapestry cards but it reads. “This Era: when you gain income, you may convert mushrooms to any other resource. For each mushroom you convert gain 2 vp.” Does this mean that when you play this tapestry card you have to do this in the same income turn or in the next income turn?

      1. Follow-up on the Mercantilism card. If I play it and already have a food, can I concert that existing food to something else or does the card imply that I can only convert the food that I collect during this income turn?
(E.g. I am the first player to play my second income turn, so I collected one resource; in this case, food. I then play Mercantilism. Can I concert that food to gold?)

        1. Emily: Mercantilism says, “This Era: When you gain income, you may convert food to any other resource. For each food you convert, gain 2 VP.”

This is only referring to food that you gain from income, not food you already have.

  227. Probably a long stretch, but here goes: any possibility of making the PNG or vector file for the icon available for download? I could laser engrave it to my token that way :)

  228. Can one explore a hex, when no unexplored territory is available next to a controlled area. If yes, what are the restrictions, i.e. does one again the benefit of the exploration tile and/or the associated victory points with placing the tile?

    1. It is possible to gain a benefit which one is unable to complete (as in your example). In these cases you do not gain the benefit. In your example if you gained the benefit to explore but are unable to (by there being no unexplored hexes adjacent to a hex you control), then you do not explore.

  229. I just finished reading the rules and think the game is amazing!! Players must advance their civilization within four income actions(other than the first income action). In other words, it means that you must use your resources efficiently after every income. Maybe it will come out unexpected results from some cards, but I think how to plan under the condition is the spirit of the game.

  230. Question on the player marker miscount: I see 65 cubes listed on the back-of-the-box image that was posted here, was that updated? I count 17 cubes per player in the setup image, is that what’s incorrect then?

    1. Matt, yes it looks like the setup image shows 17 cubes. That image is incorrect. The correct count is 13 per player as Jamey stated.

    1. We actually just publish games in English, but we have localization partners who publish them in their local languages.

      1. Thanks for the response. I’m just wondering whether there is a Korean publisher working on localization. If there isn’t any, I will just buy an English version.

  231. I respect everyone’s opinion. I myself have OCD issues in other areas. However, I find that minor, and sometimes even major mistakes in a first printing add character to my experience as a collector. These unique differences are proof that I have something special, or one of a kind. I have the first print of Wingspan. I didn’t get the replacement cards. I have sleeves, so I simply printed the replacements. I’m proud of those cards. Having a first edition is a way of showing support and appreciation for a company that has already put out good products. For every view or opinion there is a counter or opposite view. Again, I respect people’s opinions. That said, I get real satisfaction from being able to enjoy the little imperfections in life. I find that these things that may bug, irritate, and annoy some, can be quite beautiful when looked at from a different perspective. Tapestry is beautiful.

    1. I agree, Jesse. I kind of like the idea of this being a unique benefit icon used only for this particular space tile. Distinguishes it thematically from ‘earthly’ Conquer actions!

    2. @ Jesse

I hear what you’re saying, but I’d hardly call 1 out of 25,000 copies with the same misprint “one-of-a-kind” .

I’m really not to concerned about it, nothing a Sharpie won’t fix.

    1. Given the nature of the icon and how rarely it’ll even show up in the game, there won’t be replacements. You can leave it as is or draw the icon on it.

      1. Not sure if this got sent, so take two…

        1. I just love your comment. I’m I correct that reading “between the lines” you are just saying “nothing is perfect and there a bigger issues to be more concerned about” ?

      2. I’ll just ask my slightly more artistic spouse to replicate the icon with a marker or do some kind of a heat transfer trick. No problem at all, excited to get the game! :)

    2. If I have played Theocracy and a player plays Age of Discovery and rolls Science, does Theocracy stop me advancing on the Science track?

        1. It means that the first printing of Tapestry–which will be sold directly and through retail–has a slightly “off” icon on 1 rarely used tile. And of course, whenever we are aware of a typo or mistake in a game, we fix it if we print more.

          1. I received my copy of Tapestry yesterday in Germany. It’s a beautiful game! I also had a look at the misprint. It’s really just a very tiny error and doesn’t affect gameplay at all. You can easily remember that the conquer icon is missing. No problem at all :-)

I read somewhere that there might by an expansion for Tapestry one day. Would it be possible to include a corrected version then for us first edition owners?

          2. Marco: Thanks for your question. Yes, if we have a punchboard in the expansion and if there’s room for a corrected space tile, I would include it. :)

        2. I’m finding that the included instructions are one of the worst I’ve encountered for any game with this many moving parts. Any plan in place to bolster the documentation. I’ve been studying the gameplay on YouTube for two days and I still don’t feel up to speed.

          1. It is not a complicated game, Jeremy. My group played a “learning game” after I read the rules one time. We quickly figured it out. I think maybe you are getting too worked up about something that just isn’t the case in reality. Don’t worry about and just play. You’ll figure it out fast. The rules may be lacking a one or two points but “worst” ever? Not by a long shot.

          2. That’s a hilarious statement. While we’ve struggled with figuring out all the moving parts like “control”, it’s right there in the text in red and I missed it. There’s so much to do and so many mini strategies though, I don’t know if there’s a PDF FAQ we can print out, Jamie?

          3. Any plans for expansions to this amazing game?
I am in love with it, like I am Scythe, but want more from it like I did Scythe after playing it a handful of times. Seems like there might be some room to add things?? In any event this game is amazing!

        1. There’s one space tile that is slightly incorrect. See the “rule questions” section of the FAQ on this page.

    1. For purposes of the “Tanks” space on the military track, must you successfully topple to get the benefts from both conquer dice? Or do you get both benefits even if your opponent lays a trap?

    2. On the Warships card there is a conquer icon. Are you also allowed to roll the dice, or is that just the case when moving on the military trail?

      1. Whenenver you see the conquer icon, that means the conquer action. Follow all the steps of the conquer action unless told otherwise. So yes, you’ll roll the dice as normal.
