Wingspan is a competitive, medium-weight, card-driven, engine-building board game from designer Elizabeth Hargrave and Stonemaier Games. It is the winner of the prestigious 2019 Kennerspiel des Jahres award.

You are bird enthusiasts—researchers, bird watchers, ornithologists, and collectors—seeking to discover and attract the best birds to your network of wildlife preserves. Each bird extends a chain of powerful combinations in one of your habitats (actions). These habitats focus on several key aspects of growth:

  • Gain food tokens via custom dice in a birdfeeder dice tower
  • Lay eggs using egg miniatures in a variety of colors
  • Draw from hundreds of unique bird cards and play them

The winner is the player with the most points after 4 rounds.

If you enjoy Terraforming Mars and Gizmos, we think this game will take flight at your table. Please join us in the Wingspan Facebook group to discuss the game!

  1. Hi I have ordered Wingspan and it’s expansion just now. Delivery is to India. Btw, I am not able to find this game anywhere in India nor can I get it shipped here.So you cannot imagine how happy I was to see that you ship internationally!! How much time do you anticipate it may take to ship in current situation? I believe most international shipping has resumed… Anyways, counting every day and looking forward to playing this with my family very very soon! Fingers crossed!!

    1. Hi Priyanka! Your pre-order of Wingspan will ship from the US in July when we have it back in stock. International shipments have resumed, but they do seem like they’re taking longer and they’re often unpredictable. So I can’t make an estimate as to how long your shipment may take to arrive. You will get an email with tracking details when it ships so you can keep an eye on your package’s progress.

  2. Hi! I’m looking forward to play Wingspan, the reviews are great and the look of the game gorgeous. Please help me to purchase wisely: what’s the difference between Wingspan and Wingspan Revised Edition? Thanks!
Another question, are there also South American birds, or will there be in a next expansion?

    1. Thanks Carola! I’m not entirely sure where you’re seeing that distinction, as there’s just one Wingspan. However, starting with the August 2019 printing, we started including a “swift-start pack” in the game that helps people learn the rules. So that’s probably what your retailer is referring to in regards to the “Revised Edition” (which isn’t actually a thing). Where did you see that?

Also, while the core game is focused on North America, each expansion will focus on another continent, so we will get to South America someday. :)

  3. Hi! I ordered Wingspan today and am so excited. It says US preorder is July. Does that mean it ships July 1, or how will it work? Will I be notified when it ships?

  4. Hi, I’m really interested in this game but I’m from the UK and would ideally just like to have European birds in it so I can justify this as educational in content as well as through gameplay for my sons! Is there any chance in the future you would make a base set with just the European birds in, like how Ticket to Ride has a Europe version, so we wouldn’t need to buy both the base game and expansion?

    1. Amy: I appreciate you asking, but we like traditional expansions–that is, they expand the game (they don’t replace it). With that method, we don’t have a bunch of redundant components (eggs, tokens, player mats, etc) in each box.

  5. My order said june when I placed the order. Are we looking towards the beginning or the end of june?

    1. It depends on exactly when the freight shipment arrives and how quickly our fulfillment center can get it processed and out the door. To be safe, I would say mid-June, but it could be a earlier.

  6. Wingspan! Probably one our most favorite games. Gameplay flows well, easy to catch on, a great “engine building” type game. We can’t wait for the third expansion later this year, (2020). It’s now time to discovery another Stonemaier game. Any recommendations?

  7. Hello! We can’t resolve the dispute over getting food tokens. If I perform the action of getting food from the feeder, I can take 2 dice and there are 3 dice: 1 mouse and 2 fish, then taking 1 mouse I can reroll dice because there were only the same, because I can take another feed?

    1. Yes! With the normal “gain food” action, each die symbol is completed separately. So you can take a die from the feeder, then before your second choice, re-assess the feeder to see if it’s showing all the same face (and potentially re-roll).

  8. Hello Stonemeier Games.

I really enjoy the games that you make and think that the creativity and look of your games.
Especially Wingspan, and the exspansion. I have seen that you are also publishing wingspan in different languages, for exsample i believe the danish version comes out this fall. And I wondered? Do you have any plans of publishing the expansions in other languages as well?

    Best regards 😊

    1. Jonas: While we only publish English versions of our products, our localization partners are happy to publish localized expansions if they think there is demand for them. So if you tell 999 Games that you want them to continue to make all expansions in Dutch, that will be helpful information for them! :)

      1. Thank you for your Quick answer 🙂
Ill try and figurer out how i can nugde our local publisher to make your expansion(s) in our local language 😊

  9. Hello :-)
I like Wingspan very much, with the Europe Expansion. When you make the Oceania Expansion, please don’t forget the threatened “Kakapo” (live in New Zealand)…
    Kind regards :-)

  10. Hi Guys,

I am living in Shanghai, China and I am trying to buy the game in English. I don’t suppose you could recommend anywhere that stocks it? I have looked on the Chinese version of amazon (Taobao) and they only have the Chinese version.

    Thank you,
    Tom

  11. Hello, I recently purchased your swift promo pack as I purchased the original wingspan which did not include this. I would like to say thank you for the quick delivery of this product which arrived safely around the time you said it would (being in the current situation we are all in and based in the UK this is much appreciated, as is the UK based distribution centre).

I have a question related to the birds which can be turned sideways (new for European expansion). Do these count as 1 bird still even though they cover two slots? This came up when playing a game a having the end round goal total number birds in woodland. One player had a side ways bird so does this mean their maximum is still five if all five slots are filled or just 4 (1 side ways bird and the rest played normally)?

Thanks again and looking forward to seeing future expansions soon :).

    Kind regards
    Paul

  12. We have been playing Wingspan almost daily with our kids 6 and 8 years old who have become not only game experts but birders in the process too! We are out of our score cards and our bird feeder is falling apart. Any chance we can order new ones?

  13. I am a big fan of Wingspan and though this might sound a little pathetic it was one of the highlights of my 2019.

I have recently bought the European Expansion and if you’ll have it, I would like to share a suggestion with you. Though the extra tray and storage boxes are nice I found them to be ultimately not necessary and therefore it felt like a waste of plastic and cardboard (for the bigger box to accommodate everything). To be less wasteful would it be possible for the Oceania Expansion to not come with this and to make the extra tray with lid something that can be bought separately for those who need it? I have no doubts that I will be buying the Oceania expansion but I hope there won’t be even more waste of unnecessary components and overly large boxes to hold said unnecessary components.

This game has such a feeling of nature awareness and I love how proceeds from this new expansion will go to birds affected by the Australian wildfires. It seems like it would only make sense that the game itself doesn’t leave a bigger negative ecological footprint than it needs to.

    Thank you for your time

    1. Thanks Juliet! We’re not including a plastic tray in every expansion–it’ll probably just go in every other expansion so people can properly store their cards (and maybe someday we’ll offer a comprehensive storage solution when we know the final components of every expansion). There won’t be a plastic tray in the Oceania expansion.

In general, the type of plastic we’re the most worried about is the type that people throw away (like shrinkwrap), not the type that people use when they play our games. :)

      1. That’s great to hear, and thank you for the fast reply! I’m also very excited for other expansions. It would fantastic to give people the option in later expansions of buying the tray separately as I think my European expansion tray can hold 2 or 3 more upcoming expansions, and even if the tray came with every other expansion it would still be too much tray (just a thought).

  14. While playing with the European expansion last night, a question came up we could not answer using the rules. One of the end of round powers is (I’m paraphrasing): if you used all four actions during the round, play another bird and pay its normal food and egg costs. If you play a bird that happens to also be a bird with an end of round power, do you use that end of round power immediately or do you have to wait until the end of the next round to use it?

    1. Hi Coleen! Wingspan is the “base game” and must be owned to play the game. The European Expansion is an “expansion” and to use it you must own the base game.

  15. Can you clarify something about delivery. I am in the UK looking to buy a copy, and the game is out of stock (or very pricey to buy). Can you clarify when the distributors will have stock to sell again?

      1. Thanks – your speed of response is impressive! I will definitely shortly be a keen customer of the game. A few comments on this. It is great that this is available. However, it is a bit expensive relative to the price posted by others (who don’t have stock) at £58 delivered cost. That is not prohibitive, but of course I always like to get a good price if I can. Also, payment is in USD which made me concerned it would be shipped in from the US and be liable for extra taxes (VAT and any import duty) – so that could be made clear on the website.

A last question. If I decided to wait until it was with my regular games distributors (like Zatu), how long before they get stocks, as they all seem to be without inventory? Is it shortly to be shipped to them e.g., within a week or two or not? A glimpse into the logistics of the board games business would be appreciated! Jo

        1. The price posted on our webstore is MSRP. It’s clear on the website that it’s shipped from the UK–see the highlighted yellow text in the header at the top of every page.

The earliest distributors would get the game in the UK is July.

      2. Hi Jamey, I have made an order on 8th May. Will I be able to have it by the end of this week? I’m very excited to play with my family this weekend! thanks :)

        1. Hi Chloe! I see your order made on the 8th for delivery to the UK. It should be shipped this week but I can’t guarantee how long shipping will take during these uncertain times. You’ll get a tracking email with more information as soon as it ships.

          1. Hi Joe, Thanks for your prompt reply. I look forward to receiving it and thank you so much for managing our orders during this time. I really appreciate it and am of course a keen supporter of Stonemaier games!

  16. Quick question: the Norther Mockingbird’s and the Grey Catbird’s power says to repeat a brown power. does it have to be a power that was already activated that turn? or can you just activate a brown power of another bird in that habitat?

    1. Check out the “rules questions” above on this page. This is what it says about your question:

When a bird says that I can “repeat” another bird’s ability in the same habitat, how does that work?
Basically, it means that you can re-activate any other “when activated” bird in that habitat. It doesn’t matter if you’ve already activated that bird or not this turn.

      1. Hey, I have a question about that as well. We came across this while playing and couldn’t figure it out from the rule book. I played a bird who could repeat a brown power in the same habitat. The bird whose power I wanted to repeat had the power of adding an egg to every bird in the same column. So the question is, would the repeated power mean I can add eggs to the bird in the column of the bird with the add eggs power, or to the column of the bird with the repeat power?
        Thanks!

        1. The “repeat” birds essentially activate another board in that row. They don’t copy that bird’s power for themselves.

So you’d get to activate the other bird twice, laying eggs in that column twice.

      1. Amy, expand your son’s horizons with birds of the world. The artwork for both editions is fantastic. We can’t wait to see the upcoming “Australian” version later this year!

  17. Hello! I am an passionate

player and I have a few questions about the rules, if I may.
    1. Regarding the card “Repeat a brown power on one other bird in this habitat”. If I would repeat a power such as “Tuck a card behind this bird. If you do, also lay 1 egg in this bird.”, would I tuck the card and place the egg on the repeated card(1st one) or the repeater(2nd one)?
    2. Also regarding the bird “Tuck a card behind this bird. If you do, also lay 1 egg on this bird”. If I don’t have space for the egg, can I still tuck a card?
    3. Can the bird “This bird counts double towards the end-of-round-goal, if it qualifies for the goal.” double in its habitat in order to complete two columns for the end-of-round-goal “filled columns”? (of course, if, on those 2 columns, there are already all birds necessary in the other habitats.

    1. 1. That type of brown power essentially activates another bird. So the mockingbird (as an example) would not be tucking and laying an egg.
      2. Yes, you can tuck a card and not lay an egg if you wish to not lay the egg or if you can’t lay the egg.
      3. That bird only counts double when counting birds. So if you’re counting columns, or tucked cards, or anything other than birds, it doesn’t count double.

  18. Hi there,

I apologise if this question has been answered but I ran into a bit of confusion when scoring for Automa: with the end of round goals, how do you determine if an Automa egg has been placed on a relevant nest? I just counted how many nests could have eggs on them and did it that way.

    1. The Automa’s eggs aren’t collected on bird cards or nests. They are simply collected in a pool to the side and all score for the Automa at the end.

  19. I apologize if this has been asked/answered already but I was teaching Wingspan and at the end I couldn’t find an answer to having the Historian bonus card and the Vaux’s Swift? I assumed based on the flavor text that it SHOULD be scored. Love the game as much as the other two I own so far. Thanks for an excellent game.

  20. On Your page I have found only three translations , in the box You are writing about dozen .
    where are they ?

  21. Hi
I am a huge fan of Wingspan (being a lover of birds, nature and boardgames) and have the main game and European expansion (looking forward to the new expansion, coming this year).

My question is related to the expansion- several birds come with the power to be played horizontally so cover 2 areas of the habitat board, this may be obvious but do these bird count for one or two. This can be applied if the end of round goal is number of birds in a certain habitat (we have been saying it is just 1 point but effectively it is covering two spots so could be 2)?

Thank you for your help and looking forward to your next expansion :).

    Paul

  22. I apologize if this question was already posted. We have a family of 6. Is it possible to purchase a set-up for an additional player?

    1. Hi Cheryl! That’s no an official option right now, but if you have a set of different color cubes and some ingenuity, you might be able to make that happen! :)

      1. Also, you can buy the playmat from our webstore (the Wingspan neoprene playmat). That plus 8 cubes (and patience, as a 6-player game will take longer) is pretty much all you need.

  23. Video suggested I read the Automa book to play alone – thinking I would be teaching others to play. Picked out the sixteen cards specified from the shuffled deck. Goal board is now green side up. Removed the Automubon Society card. Ten Automa cards left. “Only the round section for the current round will be used.” So, card drawn has a single egg in Round 1. Gave Automa an egg. Then I discarded all three face-up cards from the bird tray and took one from the pile and placed it face down. From there on, instructions are beyond my comprehension, like “…will perform the ‘Draw Cards” action and then remove…from the round 3 goal tile…” I am beginning to think that I do not have the intelligence necessary to actually play this game. Looking ahead, I can’t even intuit the objective of the game, let alone the strategy. Worst of all, I won’t be able to teach anyone else to play. Very disappointed as I had mistakenly assumed that a game appropriate for a ten-year-old might be something I could play at seventy-seven. There must be a great number of people out there with skills sufficient to play – 4.1K people like this? I read several current comments that reveal others do indeed get the idea sufficiently to ask questions! Anyway, I will box it up carefully and send it back to you.

    1. Hi Linda! In my opinion, learning the single player game is more difficult than learning the multiplayer game. When I learn a game, I start with the multiplayer version and sometimes I will play multiple hands just to get the feel for it. This can even be fun! I also very often watch a video to gain the context you mention: what you’re trying to do, etc. I’ll link one of my favorite rules videos for Wingspan, but I’d also encourage you to find a playthrough video after this and watch someone else play it for a couple turns. These videos can give you invaluable context for an unfamiliar game.

    2. I feel the same way. Really struggling to learn this. Could it be in the translation of the directions?

      1. The instructions were originally written in English, so it’s not a matter of translation. :) There is certainly a learning curve if you’re new to games like this, but the video above should help. Alternatively, post in the Wingspan group that you’re looking for someone to teach and play Wingspan with you, and I bet you’ll find someone happy to do so.

  24. Hi, I ordered wingspan on the 13th and haven’t got a shipping notification yet! The order confirmation said itd take around 7 days. Are you guys now expecting further delays? Obviously understandable if thats the case! Just checking. We’re so excited to play!

    1. Hi Marcus! We have been experiencing significant delays, but we did mention “7 business days,” which does not include weekends and which also means your order should be shipped very soon. Our fulfillment center is working hard to catch up on orders while still being able to keep their workers safe. If you’d like me to check on your specific order, always feel free to email me at Joe@StonemaierGames.com. Thanks for your patience!

  25. I love Wingspan. It gets the most play out of all my board games. I have a few questions about the rules that came up every so often in the past. Thought I would post them all here at one. Some of these may have been answered before so apologies for repeating in advance if so.

    Questions:
    1) If a bird’s brown power says “Repeat a brown power of another bird in this habitat”, does it matter what the position of birds in the habitat is? Does the bird that is being “repeated” have to be to the right or can you “repeat” any brown power in the habitat even if it hasn’t activated yet?

    2) If a bird’s power says draw a card, that means from face up cards or deck, correct? Only if it specifically says draw from deck you couldn’t draw a face up card?

    3) Normally when you get food from the bird feeder by taking a forest action, you can re-roll the dice in the feeder if there is only one die left or the remaining dice are all the same food type. However, what if you use a bird power (Humming bird for example) that allows you to take a die from the feeder and there is only one die left. Can you re-roll or in this case do you have to take what is there?

    4) Blue Power “This bird counts double for the round end goal”. If the round end goal is most cards in hand at the end of round, would a blue power “This bird counts double” card unplayed in your hand count double in this case?

    1. Matt: Thanks for the easy numbering of your questions! Answers below. Also check out this page for some of these and other questions answered for you: https://stonemaiergames.com/games/wingspan/rules/

      1. “Repeat” in this case just means “activate another bird in this row.” It doesn’t matter if it’s to the left or right of the “repeat” bird.

      2. You can draw a card from the tray or the deck unless is specifies “from the deck.” Then the choice is limited to the deck.

      3. You can reroll whenever you’re taking food from the feeder for any reason, assuming all the dice show the same face.

      4. That Round-End (blue) power only applies when it’s played, just like all other powers. So it won’t count double in your hand.

  26. I hate to sound like a cheap-skate with this question during this crisis, but with the expected Switch console release I figured it’s worth a shot. We bought the board game (LOVE LOVE LOVE IT) and received a coupon for 30% off of the Steam version of the game. We don’t use Steam much, if at all, so haven’t used it. The Steam version (not the Tabletop DLC version) is also not yet released, so that also affects using the coupon as well. I digress, if we don’t want to purchase the Steam version when it’s released and instead want to purchase the Switch version when available, is it possible to trade-in the Steam coupon we have for a Switch code/coupon for % off the Switch version? Thanks so much for such a great game!

  27. Couple more games and a couple more rule questions…
    1. Do birds that can nest anywhere (star nest) count toward bonus cards totals for birds with specific nests (e.g. ground nests)?
    2. If yes, if you have multiple bonus cards for birds with nests, e.g. you have both enclosure builder and platform builder, can you count star nests towards both bonus cards?
    3. In solo automata game, when the automata action is play a bird, if no birds match bonus card, do you still discard all cards from bird tray?

    Thanks!

    1. Star nest count as any nest, and yes, they can count for multiple bonus cards or goals. For the Automa, you only pick up the cards that meet the requirement, so “if NO birds meet the requirement, draw 1 face-down bird card
and place it face-down in the Automa’s supply,” and so you don’t pick up any of the face-up cards.

    1. After you gain the core benefit from the action, you’ll start with your rightmost bird in the chosen habitat, activate it (if applicable, and if you want). Then move to the bird on the left, and so on until there are no more birds to activate.

  28. Played once and love it already!

Question on scoring round goal… if the round goal is number of birds in a specific habitat, do you count only face up cards or cards tucked as well?

    Thanks!

  29. Jamey,
my wife and i are loving Wingspan during our social distancing. Please settle a household debate for us.
When using a card such as Clarke’s Grebe which reads Draw 1 card, if you do discard 1 card from your hand at the end of your turn. However you’re other cards played in the wetlands have abilities that result in you having tucked all of your cards therefore leaving none to discard. Is this acceptable? Or must you leave on card in your hand so that you may discard?

    1. Your order will ship from our UK fulfillment center, so even with the current slower-than-normal shipping time, it shouldn’t take too long. We’re currently estimating up to 7 business days to ship an order and you’ll get a tracking email as soon as it does ship.

  30. Hi. Just wanted to know if Wingspan is available to buy right now and how much time it will take to recieve it within USA at this time. Thank you.

    1. Nothing extreme, but our fulfillment centers are operating at a limited capacity. Their target is to ship each order within 5 business days (as noted on our webstore), but some orders are taking slightly longer than that.

  31. Hi all,

I was given the game as a gift yesterday and it is stunning! The art is truly spot on and the game mechanics are riveting. Well done!

My only disappointment was that my game did not include a set of blue action cubes. As I have a large game group, this loss is sorely missed.

Would you send me a replacement? The game was fresh out of the box.

    Best regards,

    Benjamin

    1. Thanks Benjamin! Packing mistakes happen sometimes in mass production, but if you fill out our replacement parts form, we’ll send you the missing tokens right away: https://stonemaiergames.com/about/replacement-parts/

You’re lucky to be able to play with a large group in this time of social distancing! If you need to play a 5-player game in the next few days before the replacements arrive, any cubes from any game can provide a temporary substitute.

  32. If a bird power says draw a card, but does not specifically say from the deck, can you take one from the 3 facing up? I’m thinking like the Robin, “tuck a card, draw a card.”

Whereas other cards specify it must be from the deck.

  33. Hi Jamey! I am from Lithuania(eastern Europe). If I ordered Wingspan right now, how much do you think it would take for the game to arrive? Because other re-sellers take aaaages. And when would the European expansion be available? Thanks in advance!!

    1. It would ship from the UK if you order from our webstore, so it would probably take around 7 days to arrive. And yes, the European Expansion is at that same fulfillment center.

  34. Hello 2020 now and the 2nd edition is mostly sold out worldwide. I could pick up an English edition on ebay for about £100. Is there any new on a 3rd edition to stave off the hunger for this great game?

      1. It’s good to know you have a UK fulfilment centre, but your website is priced in dollars. Does this count as an import for orders from the UK? If not how do we place our order in £ Sterling?

  35. This might have been answered earlier, just wondering if the percentages of birds remains the same with the expansion added to the core game. Thank you. Love the game :)

    1. I hope so!!! I love those green parrot-like birds. Oceania will be an instant buy if the Kakapo is included!!! :)

  36. Why are there only a few cards with gray corners in the top right and bottom left? I have to know! It’s bugging me to death!

    1. Hi! I am no Joe or Jamey, but I think I can answer this one! There are a small number of cards that come with the swift-start promo pack. These cards are distinct and so can be added to the base game and the European Expansion without issue.

These cards come with the little grey corners so that they can be separated from the main game’s cards if you ever want to use them (along with the instructions provided in the promo pack) to teach someone how the game is played.

If I am off anywhere, I am sure Joe or Jamey will correct me. :)

    2. David is right! They’re easy to distinguish so you can pull them out at any time and teach the game with the four playing guides that came with the Swift-Start Pack. :)

  37. Hello – will SG be releasing new Wingspan neoprene player mats with larger slots for sleeved cards? If so, when are they estimated to be avail.? Thank you!

  38. Little confused – if I buy from this page today, will it get sent to me in the next few days, or will I be waiting till May-July?

    1. Oops, just read the comments below and answered my own question! Also while I’m at it, I just want to say that I appreciate your candor Jamey with all thats been going on lately (both with the virus and with Asmodee), and it definitely makes me want to support your business. Knowing that I’m buying from a company that has integrity and does the right thing is really reassuring. Gonna buy Wingspan today (cause my wife will play it with me) and Scythe if/when my free government money comes in haha. My wife and I are resident physicians in the pacific northwest, and with everything thats been going on we have less and less time to see each other, and we worry about each other’s health every day, but when we have a couple hours at home together away from the trenches, we play board games to help us get our minds off of all this madness. Thanks to you and Miss Hargrave for bringing this game to the world! Really appreciate it.

  39. Jamey,

I live in St. Louis, can I come by the fulfillment center to pick up a copy of Wingspan? I feel justified that getting this game is “essential business” for my family.

  40. Hi! Wingspan is a favorite of mine. I have played quite a few games since getting it, and I will be writing my review of it over at BGG soon. However, there is a review that just went up ( https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/2395082/it-great ). The review is quite positive.

The reviewer does bring up an interesting point about the way eggs are scored in the game.

This is a point I think is quite valid (I say so in a comment under that review). So I wanted to post this here for two reasons:

    1. I think it is a good review.
    2. I was hoping that you might give some insight.

What I mean by #2 here is this: we have another expansion coming out for this game at some point: Oceana. I am really looking forward to this product! What I was hoping to find out is a bit more about what we can expect to see in that expansion. Obviously, I am guessing it will have more birds (with perhaps a new mechanic or two), more bonuses, and more goals. But will it include anything like alternate rules, variant scoring, or anything to that effect?

In the context of the review: will anything be in the Oceana expansion that could address the issue this reviewer has with the egg scoring?

Anyway… love the game! Keep up the good work.

    1. Thanks for sharing, David! I’ll take a look. However, we will not be discussing the Oceania expansion for quite some time. I will say, though, that we were aware after the launch of the core game that people who have played a number of grassland birds are heavily incentivized to just lay eggs in the final round. We addressed this in a number of ways in the European expansion, which is currently available.

      1. “Thanks for sharing, David! I’ll take a look.” — you are most welcome!

“…we will not be discussing the Oceania expansion for quite some time…” — fair enough.

“…We addressed this in a number of ways in the European expansion…” — Yep; have that one! And the Broken Token organizer… and the Broken Token wooden dice tower… and ten of the Meeple Source bird action token sets… and… well, you get the idea. :)

  41. Rule Clarification Q, regarding “Ecologist” Bonus Card.

Ecologist Bonus card says “Birds in your habitat with the fewest birds” 2VP per bird. In the Appendix, the clarification notes “Count the number of birds you played, in the habitat where you played the fewest birds. If you have two habitats tied for fewest birds, you may still score this bonus. For example, if all of your habitats have 3 birds in them, your habitat with the fewest birds has 3 birds in it”.

Our question is: If you have NO birds in your Wetlands habitat, 5 birds in your Forest, and 4 in your Grassland, does this bonus score 8 VPs (for 4×2 birds PLAYED in your Grassland) or 0 VP since there are no birds in your Wetland??

The discussion (which is not hypothetical, this occurred in a game) is around the following line of the clarification: “Count the number of birds you played, in the habitat where you played the fewest birds.” In the scenario above, the habitat where the fewest birds were PLAYED was the 4 in the Grassland. The Wetland was not PLAYED.

Thanks in advance for the clarification!

    1. In this context, a habitat with zero birds would be the habitat with the fewest birds, and so would score zero points for the Ecologist.

  42. Ordered Wingspan Monday night and Tuesday by lunch it had already shipped out and it’s supposed to arrive Friday just in time for the weekend quarantine!

Thanks SM games for being so efficient even in a time like this.

    1. Our fulfillment center is doing a surprisingly good job under the circumstances. Thanks for the appreciation! Stay safe!

  43. Do you have Wingspan in stock right now? With current parameters how long does it take to ship to Washington state?

    1. Yes, we only sell products on our webstore that we currently have in stock. With current parameters, a US order placed today will probably ship out of our St. Louis warehouse in 4 business days. Then there’s transit time (3-7 days).

  44. Hi Jamey,

With the shutdown announced for St. Louis starting today, will any more Wingspan orders from last week be sent out until the shutdown is over? I order a game for my friend’s twin 10 year-olds birthdays and want to know if I should start thinking about a back up present instead.

    Thanks,
    Alex

    1. Alex: Yes, we’ve updated our webstore to read, “Order fulfillment is slower than normal. If a full state-wide lockdown is imposed, orders will be fulfilled after it is lifted.”

In other words, our fulfillment center continues to operate, just within certain guidelines that make it much slower than normal.

  45. Hey!
Just wanted to say thanks for a great game – and also a game which actually works to play virtually. Siblings and I bought a copy for my mum for Mother’s Day, and as We’re currently all avoiding each other in this Covid-19 world, We attempted to make it virtual across 2 locations which was surprisingly easy!
We had one camera on the dice tower as shared info and it took a little longer as we all had to say what we were doing a lot more. Bird cards wise, we adapted it slightly, but it worked well :)
Looking forward to the Oceanian expansion!

    1. My group has been playing virtually via Zoom across 4 locations (3 states). One site (a group of 2) is pulling bird cards for everyone and the face up deck – and we’re finding them in our decks (in advance, we’re organizing the birds by power type, and then by VPs – the bird is called, “brown power, 3 points, yellow-bellied sapsucker”. This same group is also controlling the dice tower (with a camera on it so we can all see). We’re all tracking everyone’s plays on our boards. Sure we all know everyone’s bird card hand, but it’s still been fun (and pretty competitive still). It is adding to the play time for sure though (about 3 hours to play a 5 player game).

  46. Hi Jamey, I have another rule clarification question – this one specifically related to the following three bird cards: Gray Catbird; Northern Mockingbird; & Hooded Merganser.

My question is related to the “Repeat” aspect of these birds power and where the card is played on the player mat. Do these birds only trigger repeat powers to birds that are played to the right of them? (i.e. something that has already been activated in that turn?) Or can they “repeat” an action that hasn’t been activated yet in a given turn by a card that is played to the left of them? i.e. Can they repeat any brown action (for Catbird and Mockingbird) or predator action (for Merganser) in the given habitat no matter where it is placed on the mat in relation to them?

    Thanks!

  47. Hi! First of all I love this game! But I had a terrible accident with the dice and I can’t use them anymore. Is there a way to buy o ly the dice? Please help me! I love the game and I already have the expansion but I can’t play now!

  48. Hi Jamey, my husband and I love Wingspan, in fact we play it so often we have run out of score sheets. Is there anywhere I can buy another please, I’m in the UK?

    Thanks,
    Mel

  49. Question about Dice Tower in between rounds:
From the rules, it is clear to reset the 3 exposed bird cards between rounds. However, should the Dice Tower ALSO be reset? Our group has been resetting it, which seems to make sense, but the rules do not seem to say it should be reset. Thanks for the clarification!

        1. I’m not sure what you mean by “the exposed one,” but you’re right. You never reset the birdfeeder between rounds. It is only reset by taking all the food or rerolling the dice (if you’re about to take food and they’re all showing the same face).

  50. Australia has many pollen eating birds. Would love to see a new food type appear in the upcoming Australasian expansion – “pollen” or “nectar” perhaps, with a new dice or two to match

  51. Jamey – as Wingspan adds more expansions/card decks, are there any plans for some type of Larger deluxe storage box, organizer, etc.? Awesome game! Thank you

  52. Thank you Jamey, So all new reprints will be STM910?

Another question for the future is if you will have localisation for the Scandinavian languages?

    1. John: Wingspan was STM900 for six or so printings until last September, then we added the swift-start pack and it became STM910 from then on (six or so printings since then).

As for Scandanavian languages, yes, I expect that by the end of 2020.

      1. Then there must be some old prints left on Amazon. But I will go for the 910. Thank you Jamey for sorting this out.

  53. On Amazon.co.uk there is two versions, STM910 and STM900, the latter being more expensive. What is the difference? It says that STM910 is the second edition with mixed colors? But its cheaper? And STM910 is in stock but not STM900.

Sorry for the many questions but I am having a hard time to understand how the lead time could be six months (i ordered Jan 4th from a retailer in Sweden and now it says May or even July). So therefore I am looking into other options …

  54. I played this game for the first time at Christmas and just bought myself a copy of my very own. I am so impressed by the quality of the game as a whole. From the little bird house with the wooden dice (I love them!!!) to the cute little eggs, this game has it all. The eggs look like Cadbury eggs or those candied almonds that you get at weddings. They are so real looking that my sister-in-law tried to eat one (thankfully we stopped her before she got her teeth on them). The packaging is so thoughtfully laid out and so beautifully made. The carefully crafted box that houses the cards, the game boards, the tokens…all lovely. The artwork on the cards is also beautiful. This game is truly beautiful and worth every penny I just paid for it. Also, I understand why it takes so long to make it. I have played several Stonemeier games (mainly Scythe and Viticulture), and this one by far is the most beautiful. Great accomplishment here.

  55. We would like to get Wingspan as a gift for our daughter-in-law in Washington DC. If we order it now, do you have a sense of when it will arrive? Thanks!

    1. Hi Steve! I wasn’t around when Mariposas was brought to Jamey, but I can promise you there are no hard feelings between Elizabeth and us. We applaud her successes wherever she may find them! And we have many more expansions with her to release for Wingspan! We can’t publish every game and it’s very common for designers to seek different publishers for different games.

  56. Is there anywhere yet to purchase replacement bird decks? At the rate that my wife and I are playing, our cards are going to be worn out in no time. Thanks.

    1. There’s no where to purchase replacement decks except inside another copy of Wingspan. I don’t personally use them, but some gamers use card sleeves to protect their cards (and then replace the sleeves if those get worn out).

  57. I played this game with five friends for the first time last night (1/26/20) and it was very enjoyable. I loved the bit about turkey vultures “projectile vomiting” so this became the first Wingspan card I ever played! Perhaps it is a bit taboo to mention non-aves species, but it would be cool to see a few bats added in a future expansion. Lastly, given that birds descended from theropod dinosaurs, naturally, you should have a dinosaur themed expansion… Perhaps, dare I say, to build some kind of Jurassic Park.

  58. My wife and I are big fans of this game. My wife purchased it as a wedding gift and waited over 6 months before she could get it. We love the birds and spending time in the outdoors. I’ve been bird watching for a very long time and this games is perfect. I do have a question. There is a European expansion, but will there be others? I used to live in New Zealand and would love to see a New Zealand expansion; the birds there are amazing and incredibly unique.

  60. Hi, are there any plans to use UK distributors for the promo pack? UK retailers are stocking the new version with it included, but not separately. I’m guessing UK shipping on a £5 pack from you direct isn’t going to be very efficient…

  61. This sounds counter-intuitive, but I cannot find any list of birds in the game with their images. A sort of guide book. I understand the cards have these details, but not all cards are open and I would like a list which I can show my children before, during or after the game. A list with a couple of unique points, if not all the game stats. Is a pdf list possible?

    1. At the back of the rulebook are credits. In the credits are listed resources used by Stonemaier Games for Wingspan, including: allaboutbirds.org, the Audubon Guide to North American Birds, the Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Eastern North America and Western North America (core game) and Birds of the World Alive (www.hbw.com) and the Collins Bird Guide (European expansion).

      1. Thanks Oliver, but I was looking at a compiled list specific to this game with images. It’s of course possible to source each one, but it won’t have the images used in the game, and it’s like redoing the effort when lists are out there, but without images.

      1. Thanks Jamey. I did check all the lists on BGG before posting here. None of them have images, and rightly so, as it might need your approval. Looking forward to have a guide based on the images you have used in the game. Thanks for the prompt response.

  62. Seeing a post that says Stonemaier will donate a dollar for every email in support it receives for Oceana expansion. The link looked suspicious to me so came here to see if I could find it. I may have missed it, but I’m wondering if it’s legit. Post is in the Dice Tower facebook stuff.

  63. I love this game. Been playing it for a while and just bought the European expansion. My only comment would be that it’s a shame the eggs and the card box are plastic. For a game like this with a focus on nature, it seems odd to add unnecessary plastic. The card box could have been cardboard (e.g. similar to the bird feeder), or omitted (it’s not needed, really). The eggs could have been cardboard tokens or wooden. Otherwise, it’s just the perfect chillout game.

    1. Our environmental focus is on disposable plastic (the type of plastic that ends up in the ocean and landfills), not gameplay-focused plastic that remains in the game and is used every time you play.

    2. In response to LordScree’s thoughts on components, there needs to be a tactile pleasure to a game which I do not believe carboard eggs would provide.

Wooden eggs would have been preferable, but would they have been practical? The method for making flat wooden “Meeple” is well known and understood, but they could not have been truely egg-shaped without considerable further expense. Sorry, but I don’t see a practical alternative to plastic eggs. The game costs too much already and the wooden eggs would just push it all further and further away from my aching wallet.

Card box? Well I like having those, and on balance I agree true card could have been used for it.

  64. Been loving this game for a few months, my SO and I play all the damn time. We always go at least 6 rounds when it’s just us- any thoughts on creating an expansion pack that would give 6-8 rounds of play? 4 never feels like enough to us-by the end of round 4 we’re just getting going! We usually have to play cards to the right of our mat to go past 6. It works we’ve made our own set of rules for the addition rounds- paying 3 eggs and food cost to play past the mat, etc..

Also curious if anyone else has these feelings on a 4 round, 2player game?

    Thanks!
    XanaduWoo

    1. That’s not how the game rules work, but anyone can do whatever house rules he wants… For me, rules are rules and I assume the game is balanced in this way…

  65. Got to play this at PAX Unplugged and I fell in love. Only minor complaint is that there are 4 trays for 5 resources. Super minor, but here we are.

  66. The game is amazing; however, I was surprised not to see birds of the American continent such as the toucan, condor de los andes, quetzal, cockatoo, macaw, etc.

    saludos desde Guadalajara, México.

  67. Hi, when you get a “tuck behind” card, can you tuck multiple birds behind, or just activate that once and have only one card behind?

    1. Just like all abilities, each time you activate it, you activate it exactly once. But you can activate abilities multiple times over the course of the game, so you can end up with many tucked cards under a bird like that by the end of the game.

  68. We received wingspan as a gift. We have 10 bird cards with gray corners in the upper right corner and lower left corner. We can’t find them anywhere in the game rules or description. Can anyone tell us how these cards are used.

    1. Yes, those are the birds that were packaged with the swift-start guides. As noted on those guides, the birds can be used to help players learn the game, and they can also be shuffled into the big deck of bird cards.

  69. In my Wingspan box there were several clear plastic “bubble” containers that are two-piece snap together containers. They are not referenced anywhere. What are they for?

    Thanks,

    Chris

  70. Hello
Do you plan to add components for additional (more than 5) players (cubes, mats) in some future xpansion? It would be great.
The woulden dice are great. They look great and are consitent with the nature theme of the game. But why do you put the cards in a plastic box? Plastic is certainly not consistent with the nature theme. It would be enough tu make some carboard barriers in the game box to store the cards. IMO it would look nicer and leave more space in the box for expansions components.
Nevetheless I love the game. Plastic box is the only negative feature.

    1. Maciek: We will consider adding a 6th player at some point, but it will require special rules that need testing, as currently the game would be too long with that player count.

We put cards in a plastic box because that’s how the cards are organized and displayed during the game.

  71. Can we get a rough estimate on when the Wingspan Steam version for PC will be available? I love playing wingspan but for those times my friends/family are busy, would be a nice alternative to scratch that Wingspan itch. :)

  72. Any idea when this will be back in stock? The store says early December. Its early December! :P My boyfriend wants this for Xmas..

  73. My family and I were playing with the European Expansion last night and we have a question about the European Green Woodpecker. That bird has the end of round ability where it counts twice. So if the end of round goal is to have the most cards in hand does that bird count as two cards even though it has not been played and still in your hand?

  74. Curious, once you sell all of current Wingspan Neoprene Player Mat (5% too small), will you continue sell with the corrected size prints in the future?

  75. I was bummed about the Wingspan Neoprene Player Mat — printed 5% too small. I noticed the picture of the mat — it’s quality seems the “cheap” kind. The first playmat I bought was Scythe’s — it’s pretty thick (heavy weight) and edges are stitched. I didn’t know what’s better playmat that time. Until I bought a few playmat for a different game — that is when I learned the true quality of playmat. Others were so thin and edges are not stitched which looks like Wingspan’s playmat. I guess those are standard playmat out there. Jamey, I hope you will consider to use the same company who made Scythe Playmat — thicker playmat (heavy weight) and stitched edges are better! I would prefer “quality” over “cheapness.” Now, I know only buy thick playmat and stitched edges like Scythe’s one. Maybe you should make that standard for SM’s games — thicker (heavy weight) and stitched playmat.

      1. Really? I see… what about the thick version? Did that take up the space in the box as well? I assume you will always use the thick & stitched version when it comes “large space” like Scythe’s game board?

    1. Thank you for your question, Sam! I think one of the amazing things about Wingspan is how it can bring bird aficionados and board gamers together, allowing both groups a glimpse into the other world. :)

  76. Hello,
I am a huge fan of your games.
Can you please tell me when we can have the Greek’s rules translation?
Thank you very much for creating so wonderful board games!!!
Please keep it in this way!!

  77. Hi Jamey,

Above you said, “If you have the first or second printing of the game (i.e., you received your game in April 2019 or earlier), you can get an update pack here.”

How can we tell what printing of the game we have to know if we need the update pack and/or the swift-start promo pack? I see the description of how to tell on the Shopify page, but I don’t have the game with me and am not sure I want to look through all the cards checking for the misspelled “betweeen”. Do ALL of the pink-ability cards have the misspelling?

We got our copy of the game at an event in Alton, IL back in June that had to be moved from the Audubon Center at Riverlands. Can you tell from that what printing we have?

    Thanks,
    Kevin

    1. Kevin: Thanks for your question. There’s a visual guide on the FAQ (also on this website), but if you were at that event, you have the 3rd printing, which has the corrected cards but not the swift-start guide.

      1. Where can I find the replacement parts form? We just bought this game on Friday and we got two sets of green action cubes and no yellow action cubes.

  78. Hello, I saw the new “With Swift Start Pack” version. Are you going to sell those 10 promo cards separately? Regards.

  79. Any idea when we will get an announcement for the Wingspan expansion? Will there be N opportunity to buy before release, as with Tapestry? Love Wingspan and can’t wait for the expansion.

  80. I have been hearing about this game. i would love to have a copy of the same. I am in India, unfortunately, games done reach here fast and when it reaches its damn expensive. Would be grateful if you could help me out.

  81. Thanks a lot for this great game; it is my current favorite. Congrats also on the spiel win; well deserved.

I’d like to leave some feedback about the game and my hopes for future expansions:

    1. The coupling between the cards is a little loose for my taste. Each card is generally evaluated based on its stand alone value. I rarely see myself building combos or a real purposed engine, my engine just gets stronger in a general sense as I play “good” cards.

    2. The cards that foster or depend on player interactivity are few and weak (more so at lower player counts). In most games, the brown cards outweigh the pink cards by a mile and the brown cards that give things to all players could be considered disadvantageous to play at all.

The good news is, Wingspan is still a great game and both of these issues can be addressed by introducing more cards, I also freely admit that the above issues are based on my personal tastes and not outright “problems”.

My hope for Wingspan’s future is that each set of expansion cards has a distinctly different feel. It would be amazing if, for example, an African set were released that has a lot of interactivity and even “take that” mechanics; there are %75 pink cards in this set. Next comes the European birds that have a high degree of co-operation were people are giving each other resources all game long. Then, hopefully these Continental sets, each having it’s own flavor, could be played together or separately allowing me to tune the game to the feel that I want.

Thanks again for a great experience.. I’ve gotten so much value out of the base game already, that whatever you do with the expansions will be an automatic purchase for me anyway.

  82. The fact that there is so much price gouging because of the forced demand really questions my fesire to buy this game. I have played it, its fun but im tired of forced demand…
Just make enough for us all to buy… you know there is a demand

      1. Shawn, you need to remember this is a business and cash is king. It takes money to print games, in China or anywhere else. Likely most of the money needs to come up front and even though Wingspan and Scythe are selling great, there are still bills to pay and they likely only have enough money for X games. Hopefully their per game cost is reduced a little as the design is now set, but you still need to front the money and get it back after the games are delivered.
Also, last year at GenCon, Coolstuff had many games of Great Western Trail and they all sold. This year they also had many games of Great Western Trail and they took many back with them. At some point, nearly everyone who wants Wingspan will have bought it and I’m sure Stonemaier doesn’t want pallets of the game sitting around.
My point is that Supply and Demand is a tricky thing. Right now the demand is very high, but they don’t want to oversupply either.

        1. Well said Greg!

I believe my wife might enjoy Wingspan, but my budget for new games is very tightly constrained. If a UK or Western Europe edition were made available I would consider the purchase. I do not have the funds to consider buying the US set then an expansion set.

I don’t argue about the value for the money, I don’t have the money.

  83. Which vendors will have Wingspan’s expansion available? I know you haven’t announced a date yet, but I’m checking sites religiously. We want it so badly. I just need to know where to look.

    1. Hi – I just purchased a copy at the standard $55 plus shipping from The Audubon Shop in CT. This is a small birding store that is not part of the board game scene, so I don’t think anyone realizes they have some copies available. Feel free to give them a call: 888-505-9056

    1. Thanks for asking! We already consider Wingspan to be a deluxe game, so we’re just making the one version, and people can buy special tokens if they’d like from third-party companies like Meeplesource and Top Shelf Gamer.

  84. When will it be available to purchase again? Was going to order from your site and it says it is sold out again.

  85. Hi just found out about the game and it sounds perfect for my 22 year old birder daughter-with each new printing is the same wonderful quality that everyone is talking about going to be same?

        1. When I went to the Meeplesource website, it said they were out of stock. :-(
However, I went straight to the booth the first day of GenCon and was able to get a copy. I did have Elizabeth sign the rules.
I also bought the special first player token from Meeplesource and had both Elizabeth and Natalia sign that.

  86. We’re going to play our first game with an internationally known ornithologist this weekend! Will those of us with first edition be able to purchase “error correction” pieces once the bugs are ironed out? Thanks.

    1. Currently there’s only one edition, but there are a number of printings. In the first two printings, there were a few typos, and we offer the update pack on our webstore (it’s $0.01). However, for the printings that have been available over the last few months, there are no typos.

  87. […] Wingspan is a breathtaking “engine” building game where you and up to five friends compete to coax flocks of birds into nature reserves. You’ll spend turns luring unique bird cards into one of 3 biomes, or playing each of the biome’s special ability—get food, lay eggs, or gather more birds. Each time you play a biome, your birds have a chance to use special abilities, often times creating long, clever chains of well-laid actions. […]

  88. […] Wingspan is a tableau building card game that, like most games of this type, is classified as a board game. The bird-watching theme and attractive packaging led me to get a copy and play it for the first time recently. I enjoyed the game and will play it again in a few days. This first play session was with one other player who, like me, had not played this game before. […]

  89. Hi Jamey,

We are a party of 6 very fond of SM Games (from Viticulture to Scythe and many more). We love the mechanics and the aesthetics. I am myself very much interested in ‘cuteness’ of games, and that leads me to buy the upgrades on mats, dice, resource tokens and coins. They have just gave me Wingspan as birthday present in the Spanish version from Maldito Games. I do not know if there is any difference with the materials but I have to say that I don´t particularly like the thick paper goal mat. I would have expected that mat to be the at least the same cardboard material as the players mats. Have you got plans to offer an upgrade for that mat? It seems to me that it won´t last long.

Thank you and please keep releasing such good and beautiful boardgames.

    Carmen.

    1. Carmen: Thanks for your question. We chose the goal mat paper stock specifically to ensure that it would not warp. A smaller board like that at 1.5mm (same as player mats) would have been prone to warping.

  90. […] Wingspan is a competitive, medium-weight, card-driven, engine-building board game from Stonemaier Games. You are bird enthusiasts—researchers, bird watchers, ornithologists, and collectors—seeking to discover and attract the best birds to your network of wildlife preserves. Each bird extends a chain of powerful combinations in one of your habitats (actions). These habitats focus on several key aspects of growth: gain food tokens via custom dice in a birdfeeder dice tower, lay eggs using egg miniatures in a variety of colors, draw from hundreds of unique bird cards and play them. Finally, the winner is the player with the most points after 4 rounds. […]

  91. Just played it for the first time tonight. I lost, but I can hardly wait to play again. It’s a really good game.

  92. A question arose when we were playing this evening. Can a player use one of the “Once Between Turns” effects after your last turn in the final round if someone after you does something that would normally trigger it? Technically it isn’t “Between” your turns, but the implication is that you get an effect “on another player’s turn.”

  93. Going to the beach in a couple of weeks – perfect time to take a board game…I’ve been waiting for a rerelease of this game for months. Why is it taking so long?
So I need to call around and see if anyone has it? Because on Amazon it is still over $100

  94. So my local game store was told by their distributors that Wingspan should be in their hands in June. What’s the veracity of this claim?

    1. They’re referring to the third printing of Wingspan, which we shipped to distributors 3 weeks ago, and I’ve already seen it show up in stores. That’s the “June” printing (there is no other June printing).

  95. Can’t help but feel like there are similarities between how the Xbox 360 was released and how Wingspan was released.

  96. We are trying to get started but are stuck. The Overview says “pay the bird’s food and egg cost” but we can’t figure out how the eggs are distributed, The Setup has us getting five food tokens, then discarding as many as the number of bird cards we want to keep. However, I don’t see how we get the eggs for the first action.

Seems like a great game but we are unable to get started.

    1. You only have to pay eggs if you’re playing a bird in columns 2-5 (see the very top of the player mat). You must play birds in the far left of each habitat, and the first column has no egg cost above it, so you don’t need to worry about the egg cost at the beginning of the game. After you’ve played a bird, you can take the “Lay eggs” action to lay eggs on your birds.

  97. Wow, I own a one-man, international birding guide company, I give talks about birding to the Texas Master Naturalists classes ans well as to the local schools and organizations. I’d love if you could send me a copy of your game so I can review it and promote it. I grew up playing a now obsolete game “Gone Birding” and it was instrumental to getting me where I am today. I’d be honored to help the kids of today do the same with your game. My website is http://www.huthavian.com; please check me out and consider letting me review your game! Thank you!

  98. I was just wondering if it’s known how many (or what percent) of the preorders will be completed with the second printing? I know it was previously said that it would go into the 3rd printing to cover them all, just wasn’t sure how likely it was to get one from this shipment. I’m just trying to figure out how much finger crossing I need to be doing next week…or if I need to just plan on waiting until next month. Thanks!

  99. Hey Jamey,

Just wondering if the copies of the game that were being air-freighted for impatient gamers like me were on schedule and if I should expect my copy this week?!?!?! (sorry, very excited).

    Thanks,
    Justin

  100. […] Wingspan is the newest hotness from Stonemaier Games, from up-and-coming designer Elizabeth Hargrave. Highly anticipated since its announcement in January, this game hit the market and sold out before it even reached store shelves. Wingspan even attracted the attention of The New York Times, an organization that usually doesn’t look twice at this hobby. Something about this game has everyone’s attention, but what is it exactly? […]

  101. So here are the facts:
Air freight compared to ocean freight; 60 cents per lb. versus $2 per lb. at most.
Which would be a cost to you of $5 for air freight AT MOST. the cost of ocean freight to you, ($1.50), was obviously factored into your MSRP of $55 (most retailers sold it for way less).
Why not just add on $3.50 at most. this smells of extortion. Never a clever business model long term.

    1. Leah: Which carrier are you using? We got quotes from two freight companies, and at 126 units per pallet, the cost varied between $19 per unit and $11 per unit (the cost dropped if we shipped at least 4 pallets). Each unit weighs 2.4 kg. Ocean freight is not factored into MSRP–our MSRP is purely a 5x multiplier on manufacturing cost.

Extortion is a strong (and entirely inaccurate) word to throw around, so please check your facts. I definitely have.

  102. So I would like to order Wingspan through Stonemaier games online but the only option I have is to be added to the list. I would really love to buy the game so I ordered on Amazon just so I could secure one. However, the price is $104.00 and they are not expecting the game to be delivered to me until October 2019.

I am glad Elizabeth has created and produced such a beautiful and fun game.

Is there a way I can order through Stonemaier and receive Wingspan before October 2019? Just wondering…
    Thank you
    Mary

  103. I know there are tons of possible worthy expansion zones, but I’d like to put in a pitch for a Hawaiian avifauna expansion! We often feel left out of stuff. :)

  104. Received Wingspan yesterday. Awesome game, seduced the whole family, and good French translation too. Only one drawback : we live in France and most of the birds are American species (even though a few are worldwide). Would have loved to be able to play with the European species we are used to. Do you think an add-on will be available one day ?

  105. First play yesterday, with 4 players.
Overall comments were very positive. They game plays very smooth, with a clear ruleset.
This one is definitely a keeper. I am already looking forward for the expansions.

  106. Hi I have pre ordered through my LGS and would love to see a bird pack expansions for other country’s birds ie Europe South America, and Australia

      1. I actually expect Expansions to broaden the gameplay a bit more over just adding birds. My concerns with birds packs are:

        1. Cards should fit into the tray.
        2. Expand the gameplay over “bland” expansion types which just adds a little bit more of the same.
        3. Diferent possible scorings.
        4. Additional mechanics, given that the base game is pretty simple.

        1. Thanks for sharing your expectations! I have mentioned that each expansion will feature birds from a different continent, but i haven’t said that’s the only component that will be in those expansions. This isn’t our first rodeo, Hector–look at the wide variety of expansions we’ve made for our other games. :)

          1. Good news ! If expansions isn’t JUST about getting new Birds’ cards (which is already cool), then I’d suggest you could think of ways to get more interactions between players.

          2. “more interactions” is literally in the description on the bottom of the box of the first expansion. :)

Didn’t get it… ? Do you mean a 1st expansion has already been released ? Or are talking about the main game box ?

          3. Yipikay hey :-D
            Any more infos ?
Date of release, which continent, how to pre-order, etc… ???

          4. Had to try ;-) Great news anyway, can’t wait to know more about it, and hoping you chose European Birds ;-)

  107. […] Engine building games are games where cards are activated. When the cards are activated you perform some action or gain some sort of resource. In some cases, the activated action on your card may benefit the other players. In most cases, you start at the right most card and work your way left. I’ve found that it takes me a couple of plays to figure out the best way to maximize my engine building. There are some engine building aspects to Terraforming Mars. The most recent game to hit our table that is a fantastic example of an engine building game is Wingspan. […]

  108. Heya Jamey, we played this for the first time the other night.and this is now one of my favorite games I have ever played! Even though we were unable to finish the game because the store was closing, It has been quite some time when I played a game for the first time that left me with such an Amazing and Intriguing first impression!!!

Growing up in the late 70’s early 80’s, I used to collect those little pocket sized illustrated books, my favorite being Birds of North America. Wingspan to me is like a board game translation of that book:)

I finally found a site that have preorders available for the March 8th release, so I hope to get my copy next month. Either that, or I hope there will be copies at BGGC Spring here in DFW I can pick up;)

I can’t wait to play this with my Wife and Stepdaughter and once again, such an amazing game from Stonemaier Games:)

    1. Thanks, Baylor! I’m glad you had such a good time playing Wingspan. I’m familiar with those books you mentioned–I had one myself when I was growing up in the 80s. :)

While it’s quite possible retailers won’t have enough copies to satisfy demand for the March 8 release, we’re making plenty more that will arrive in early April and May.

  109. I almost canceled my preorder because of a change in my financial situation. Then I saw Rahdo’s review and decided to keep the order. I’m so glad I did because it is so freakin’ fun! I loved it and so did my gaming buddy and her 11yo boy. He caught on faster than we did. Amazing game! Kudos to Elizabeth and the team.

  110. Jamie,

Great game! My wife and I have played it three times since receiving it two days ago.

I haven’t yet seen anyone mention it, but their are some typos on cards. The word “between” on at least some pink abilities and there was at least one bird card where “bird” is spelled “brid”.

It doesn’t dimish the game for us.

    Thank you!

  111. Got to play this today and it was a lot of fun! I look forward to playing it regularly and purchasing it when it becomes available. Great game :)

  112. Hi
Just played Wingspan for the first time – fantastic, beautiful game.
I noticed a few typos on the cards eg. brids rather than birds on the Oologist bonus card. Is there anywhere I can report these typos to so that they can be corrected for second edition? (I think I found 4 in our first game).
By the way I love the attention to detail – the graphics are stunning.

    Thanks Jamey

    Paul

    1. Paul: Thanks for your question. There actually isn’t a second edition of Wingspan (new editions are when publishers completely revamp art and/or mechanisms). We’re just fixing a few minor typos for subsequent printings. At this point we’ve found all the types–see the comprehensive list here: https://boardgamegeek.com/article/31024026

If you spot any typos in the rulebook or Appendix, please first check the digital files, as we’ve probably caught those errors too. :) Otherwise you can compile the errors you find (if any) and comment here with them.

      1. Hi Jamey – thanks for your quick reply! My apologies – I should have read the BGG post first! Can’t wait to play Wingspan again this afternoon. Looking forward to further new releases from SM (I must still purchase Viticulture yet) – definitely the best game producer.
        Many thanks
        Paul

    1. Hey Jamey, very excited about this game, and somehow missed the original release. I have pre-ordered through an online retailer, and came across your open letter on facebook. I hope I misunderstood a little. Will the retailers be able to meet demands on March 8th? Or would I be better off cancelling and looking into another option? You mentioned that they have over promised, but I was unsure if this was for this release or the first round.

      1. Brett: I’m sure that retailers have accepted orders that they cannot fill right away, but I’m also sure they’ll fill them as soon as possible (it won’t be too long until they have more copies). So I would not recommend cancelling your order, as you’ll lose your place in line with them if you do.

  113. Just played today with a coworker during lunch today, we were both quite surprised at how much we enjoyed it. Huge fan of everything you release, yet this game left us stricken by it. I think the best way to describe it is that the game flows naturally. Turns, Actions, and Rules almost do all the heavy lifting on their own. I wouldn’t hesitate to break this game out among ANY group. Bravo!

  114. Thank you for producing yet another fantastic, high quality game! My wife and I received it today and played three times in one sitting. Your attention to detail in components and gameplay really shines. We love Wingspan!

  115. Buenas.

  116. I accidentally fell in love with birding when I was in college, and have since seen (and sought out) many of the birds in this game. So I obviously had to have it. The fact that it’s getting good reviews is even more exciting! Thanks for taking a chance on an interesting and different theme. Too bad there isn’t more enthusiasm for our avian friends! I can’t wait for my copy to arrive.

  117. even though I would probably pay less when this gets to UK retail I decided to get this direct. Great to support the developer and with the bonus of getting it at least a month early.

Can’t wait for this. Love TM but hadn’t heard of this until New Years Eve. Wish I hadn’t bought some other games for Christmas now! after watching #Rhado and #slickerdrips playthroughs and #dicetower reviews I think this is all I am going to want to play for a while. We

  118. Preordered yesterday….literally throwing the $$ at my screen, lol…..super looking fwd to this, congrats on a great launch!

  119. Is the plan to start shipping Champion preorders today? Unless I read it wrong in the update from a couple days ago.

  120. Ciao Jamey, season’s greetings from Rome! I will be a day one backer, and with that said…I love to have my cards nice and sleeved and by watching your unboxing video, one doubt arose: will the tray be able to fit all the cards once sleeved? …it does not seem so :(
    cheers.

  121. Will we see any review videos of Wingspan before the Jan. 2nd release? I’ve heard in multiple places that Rahdo is saying good things, but he isn’t publishing his video yet. I’m looking forward to his perspective on a 2-player play through.

  122. Sorry if this may show up twice because the comment didn’t show up on the page after I posted.

I’m not a Stonemaier Champion and I was wondering if I preordered how long would it take to ship and deliver? My birthday is Feb 2 and I’m having a big game day weekend to celebrate and this game fits up my alley and the people I play with. If it could get to me before then I would easily preorder but if not then I’ll just have to pass and wait for retail. Looks beautiful, great theme, nice to see a female designer as well!

    1. Why wouldn’t you just sign up to be a Champion? It’s like the cost of shipping so it equals out. Plus we get other bonuses. It’s a no brainer.

  123. I’m hoping to preorder but I’m not a SM champion. How long would it take to ship and deliver? My birthday is Feb 2 and I’m planning on doing a big board game weekend and this is up my alley and the people I play with. So if I was able to get it before then I would easily preorder.

  124. Hello Jamey
The game looks great and the theme is one that is being explore much. I am not a bird follower but I will get the game for sure. Just the artwork and the eggs makes me want to have it.
    Great work!

  125. Hey Jamie,
    This looks totally amazing :)
Do you think there is a Chance for a German Version? Maybe Essen 19? :D
    Greetings from Cologne :)

      1. I just checked their website. Looks like a late March release. I will have to go to my local game store here in Stuttgart and make sure they order it for me. I have a German friend whose parents will LOVE this game! I have two English copies on pre-order. (:

  126. Super excited to pick this one up to play with my wife and boys! Very unique theme, appropriate play time, and fun mechanics. Thanks, per usual, Jamey, for putting out such high-quality games, both in design and components. SM proudly lines our game shelf.

  127. I think if we take into account that My Little Scythe has a $50 price tag, with all it’s miniatures, game trays, a decent number of cards, as well as a good deal of quality plastic and card board components; I think it’s safe to say that Wingspan won’t cost more than that. I’d be surprised if it we’re more, but I’ll be budgeting $60 so I have a bit of a cushion .

  128. Hey Jamey, can you tell me the size of the cards so I can have sleeves ready to go? They look standard but just want to be sure. Thanks so much!

  129. Already a SM Champion and will be placing my pre-order day 1 ….. very excited, since TM is my most fav game, this is gonna be awesome. Jamey, if you can, mind listing some of the more rare birds that will be in the game ? (And also, does the rarity in real life make them more powerful with better abilities and powers in the game ? ) Just curious :)

  130. I know you’ve posted that pre-orders will be available Jan. 2nd. At the top of this page it says “Notify me when available: in January from Stonemaier; in March from retailers.” Does this mean only pre-orders in Jan., and shipping in March? How much earlier do Stonemaier Champions generally receive their purchases?

    1. Kenny: It means that it’s available from Stonemaier in January, but if you want to wait to get it from a retailer, you won’t get it until March. Stonemaier Champions will start seeing their orders ship within a few days.

      1. Sweet, I just might have to become a Champion! I love what you do, Jamie. You’re attention to customer service is the best I’ve ever come across in the industry!

          1. Not just this board game industry, but in any industry I’ve ever been a part of.

I’m a manager in a completely separate field and I use you as an example.

I don’t know if all of these comments are Jamey or wage worker disguised as Jamey, but it doesn’t even matter, the consistency, courtesy, and quality are top notch.

            Great Work

      1. Jamey, is the game language independent? The english is No problem for me but might be for my wife. I have already ordered earlier today but now i see that 999 games might be translating the game.

  131. Shipping one game to Australia is expensive. Would you consider offering a discount for a box of games (I not sure how many Wingspan units fit in a box but whatever makes sense from a logistics point of view … 4 … 6 units?) so that we can organise a group buy, share the cost of one shipment and land the game for a reasonable cost per unit.

    1. While we don’t offer bulk discounts, the shipping cost per unit inherently goes down when you order more than one copy. Also, we make our games available through retailers worldwide in case you want to save on shipping directly from us.

      1. Please do make an Australian version of the game high on your list, it would be a hit worldwide because we are known for our quirky and gorgeous birds! Thanks, Jane

  132. Very interested by the theme alone! Will there be Australian parrots in the game? Orange-bellied and swift parrots, maybe? :)

      1. Thanks for your quick response Jamey. I understand that as there are only 170 birds that focusing on one area of the world would make sense.
I would prefer a game that had predominately birds from the UK and understand that to publish different versions would likely increase production cost and be unfeasible.
I’ll keep following to see how the game develops and look forward to seeing regional expansions.

        1. Thanks Karl! While I don’t think we’ll do an expansion that focuses on a single country, I think we’ll continue with the method of focusing on one continent at a time. In the end, we’ll never cover all the birds, unfortunately–there are so many! :)

          1. Looks good, do you know yet if you will do versions say a European version or an African version where you buy the game with birds from that continent, or will you need to buy the American version and then buy an expansion to get say European or African birds?

          2. Another UK potential customer here…
It would be possible to have a core game which was unplayable without a continent explansion pack, though this would be rather strange practice.
It would also be possible to sell a European edition in Europe with just the European birds in it. You may have heard that there is a huge market for tabletop games in Germany, so if you can produce one set with a multilanguage set of rulebooks and you should be fine.

          1. Avid Antipodean bird photographer and board gamer here. Agree with Miz, be great to have a Pacific/SE Asian/Oceania version. Huge demand for this game DownUnder…I had to wait until this week (1st week in August) to get this. Can’t wait to try it out with my game buddies. The game looks great and very well produced. The bird feeder is easy to set up and it doesn’t look like it will be over used. The wooden dice are not a problem for me as this is a primarily card and token based game. The different variations of goal cards and variations of starting bird and bonus cards mean that almost every game will be unique, with different strategies. Also a huge fan of Planetarium – what can I say, I’m a science geek!!!

  133. As a birdwatcher, I think this looks very intriguing. The artwork looks great! But so much is still unknown about the gameplay…

        1. I was able to finally attain a copy of Wingspan about a month ago and I will say it is worth the $55 price tag. The dice bird house is an artistic feature and I think will hold up better than other games (see Everdell) with similar artistic features. The replayability of the game is excellent; I have played against the Automa about 20+ times and continue to try and beat the “hard” Automa (finally scored 98 to Automa’s 99 yesterday!). The eggs, cards, and instruction manuals are off great quality as well.

        2. It is well worth the sticker price. My family adores this game – adult children 20-somethings. It’s rather easy to pick up, but complex enough to be able to try various strategies for different outcomes. It is never the same game twice. We look forward to adding expansion packs.

      1. Interesting that you have chosen the material as theme appropriate. For many a gamer dice aren’t about a thematic experience but they bring a tactile experience. Often wooden dice lack the heft of other materials and the click-clacking sound when rolled or knocked together. Think of Azul with cardboard chits instead of those tiles, just not the same experience, and arguably would be a worse game in that case. Not saying that this would be the case with Wingspan, I don’t know enough about it, but trying to give a balance to the comment.

        1. What you have done there though is remove theme, not add it. A more similar comparison wold be how much cooler Azul would be with real ceramic tiles, or if Azul: Sintra or Sagrada had glass tiles/dice.

          1. You miss the point. My comment was not about theme but tactility. In my view wooden dice remove a tactile element, so the comparison was fair

        2. The wooden dice is an excellent choice in my opinion. This isn’t a dice rolling game primarily, so I don’t see the problem with the “tactile experience”.

        3. One of the first things I commented on when unboxing was how nice these dice are. Stonemaier games are known for their high quality parts for a reason. I do thing it’d be nice to have the option to purchase a affordable, higher quality bird house dice tower of some sort though. The one it comes with is fine. But having other options are nice.

    1. I was actually excited to see the wooden dice. Admittedly, I grew up with my grandfather and father being wood workers, so maybe I have a bias due to that. I loved the wooden Charterstone dice too.

      1. I actually really like wooden dice too! Hahaha! Probably because of Legends of Andor for me. But yeah, love all the components here! (Plus the meeple source wooden tokens! Woot!)

    1. My family and I just played with the European expansion and we have a question. The European Green Woodpecker has the end of round power that doubles for end of round goals. So if the end of round goal is cards in hand… Does the European Green Woodpecker count as two cards in hand even though it has not been played? Thanks.

      1. When you do add another expansion, please consider Oceania as the next continent. Australia and New Zealand have the most amazing birds!

        1. Hi Preston! I don’t know when Amazon will have Wingspan back in stock. We sell to distributors who then sell to retailers (like Amazon and your local stores). I do know we’ll have more in stock at our store this month. Feel free to sign up to be notified when it’s back in stock at the Wingspan page on our store.

          1. Hi Joe,
Is the game still going to be in stock this month or is it really going to be May or July? Why is there such a long lead time and the game in such scarce supply? I hate to buy it from people who just jack up the price because you can’t get it anywhere else. I love this game and would like to buy it for myself and as gifts.
            Thank you,
            Kerry
