In this first expansion to Wingspan, we increase the scope of the world to include the regal, beautiful, and varied birds of Europe. These birds feature a variety of new abilities, including a number of birds with round end abilities, abilities that increase interaction between players, and birds that benefit from excess cards/food. Along with the new bonus cards, they’re designed to be shuffled into the original decks of cards (and cards from future expansions).

The European Expansion also includes an additional tray for storing the growing collection of birds (past, present, and future), as well as 15 purple eggs, extra food tokens, and a colorful new scorepad designed for both multi-player and single-player scoring.

FAQ: Rule Questions

How do I play a bird on top of a sideways bird?

Some birds like the European Roller allow you to place the card sideways on your player mat, filling two spots. If you then play a bird like the Common Buzzard on top of a sideways bird, the Common Buzzard would also be placed sideways, completely covering the sideways bird.

For the birds that “count double toward the end-of-round goal, if it qualifies for the goal” – which goals qualify?

These birds count double toward end-of-round bonuses that count birds, not other quantities (e.g. “birds with platform nests” counts, but not “eggs in platform nests”, which counts eggs, nor “total food costs,” which counts food). Remember, unplayed birds do not have an ability, so if this card is in your hand, it does not count double toward the “cards in hand” end-of-round goal.

Can birds whose abilities allow them to be played on top of another bird be played in any habitat?

No. The power allows you to change the cost of the bird, but you still must follow the other rules regarding playing the bird and match the habitat.

FAQ: General Questions

Can I play this expansion without Wingspan?

All expansions require at least some components from the core game.

Do the expansions change the percentages on the core-game bonus card?

Elizabeth designed the expansion so the percentages remain almost exactly the same. We’ll continue doing this for all expansions.

Do the expansions fit in the original box?

The European Expansion components can fit tightly into the original box. The extra components included in the Oceania Expansion will not. A bigger storage option is in the works.

Design Diary

October 7: Rules Rule!

The first Wingspan expansion integrates seamlessly with the original game–you just shuffle in the bird cards, bonus cards, and goal tiles and proceed to play as normal. The explanatory rules are thus very short, with the Appendix taking up the most space in the full document.

Due to how well the expansion integrates with the core game, if you have both, I think you can easily use both when sharing the game with new Wingspanners. At low player counts, you could also play the first game with only the new expansion components (I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it, but there’s nothing mechanically wrong with trying it).

I’ll include the “rules” portion of the rulebook as images here; just click on the link to view the full document.

Tomorrow you’ll start to see reviewers share their thoughts on the Wingspan European Expansion.

October 6: A Few More Birds

I don’t want to spoil too much of the first Wingspan expansion for you, as part of the fun is discovering new birds as you play. But before I post the rulebook tomorrow, I wanted to share a few more abilities Elizabeth created that I thought were particularly interesting. Also, huge thanks to Natalia and Ana for returning to illustrate the birds in this expansion!

October 5: Too Many Eggs?

While strategies in Wingspan can vary vastly from game to game based on which cards you play, the order in which you play them, your bonus cards, and the round-end goals, one commonly discussed approach is to play a lot of birds in your grassland habitat and activate it as much as possible in the final round. If played correctly, this can be even more lucrative than playing a high-value bird in the final round.

Elizabeth and I (Jamey) discussed whether or not this was a problem, and for the most part we decided it wasn’t–as with any strategy, you need to work towards the egg strategy for it to benefit you.

However, we wanted to widen the spectrum of final-round strategies, so Elizabeth designed some birds and goal tiles that direct players towards other options. Some of these options actively discourage players from laying eggs, while others enable players to stock up on cards or food and then convert them to points.

In the game of Wingspan I played on Thursday with the expansion, the impact was so dramatic that the winning player had exactly 1 egg at the end of the game, as did I! I made sure it was a purple egg, though. :)

Here are a few of the birds and new goal tiles that–if chosen and pursued–could steer players away from a heavy egg-laying strategy in the final round:

October 4: Round-End Abilities

While there are a ton of new abilities on the European birds, we wanted to include one new featured mechanism that spanned across a number of birds. This new mechanism is on 20 bird cards via a teal background.

These round-end abilities trigger at the end of each of the 4 rounds in Wingspan. We’ve included a little round-end reminder tile so it’s clear that these abilities trigger before you do anything else at the end of the round (in player order).

Because these abilities trigger at most 4 times per game, Elizabeth designed them to be very powerful. The earlier you play them, the better, but I’ve found that they’re still quite good even if they only trigger once or twice.

I actually just played the Wingspansion last night, and I ended up with two birds with these abilities:

I’ll leave you today with a few images of round-end birds, and there are many more for you to discover when you try out this expansion!

October 3: The Components Leak

You’ve seen the Wingspan European Expansion box–what’s inside of it? Everything shown in this photo:

It might be hard to see exactly what’s here, so I’ll list everything below with some brief explanations:

  • 81 bird cards (all unique, all new): Yes, these are marked with “EE” so you can sort them from the cards in the base game…though you’ll never need to, as they’re intended to all be shuffled together. You *could* play a 1-3 player game with only the European birds if you’d like. All of the new mechanisms in the expansion are integrated into the birds themselves–I’ll showcase them later this week.
  • 15 egg miniatures (purple): You probably won’t need these unless you play Wingspan with 5 players; mainly we just thought it would be fun to include a new egg color in the game. The egg colors don’t mean anything (out of respect for those with colorblindness issues, we don’t plan for the egg colors to ever have mechanical meaning in the game).
  • 5 bonus cards: These just get shuffled in with the original bonus cards. Elizabeth designed the expansion so the percentages on the original bonus cards are still applicable.
  • 4 Automa cards (2 of which are bonus cards): The expansion fully integrates with the solo mode of the base game.
  • 1 custom tray with lid: You need a place to store all of these new birds, right? And birds from future expansions. For this reason, the expansion will not fit into the original game box.
  • 1 scorepad: This new version of the scorepad has a splash of color on it and includes double-sided sheets (multi-player on one side, solo on the other). Other than the solo side, it’s functionally the same as the original scorepad.
  • 1 rulebook: The rules themselves are very short–most of the rulebook is an appendix. Oh, and the paper is the same fancy material we used in the base game.
  • 5 goal tiles: These tiles are to be shuffled into the original goal tiles.
  • 38 food tokens: I haven’t heard of many people running out of food tokens, but since we needed a punchboard in the expansion, we figured we’d maximize the utility of it.
  • 1 reference tile: This is included to remind players of the end-of-round steps…which now include a new step that I’ll discuss tomorrow!
  • 1 box (296x144x80mm; 0.7 kg)

While I don’t mention it on the official components list because they’re not a component we “officially” include (because they’re not necessary, and if they arrive broken, it’s extremely inefficient to ship replacements) are the 2 plastic resource containers shown in the photo.

I look forward to sharing the new mechanisms with you over the next few days!

  1. Love wingspan!
Just opened the European expansion, but the 3 card bird tray isn’t the purple coloured one and the food tokens are squeezed in wrong spots
Has this box been tampered with?

    1. I’m not sure what “squeezed in wrong spots” means, but the tray could be one of our eco-friendly sugarcane pulp trays. Feel free to send a photo and a description of your concerns to contact@stonemaier.com. Tampering isn’t really a thing, but there are some instances of counterfeits.

  2. The teal cards are “end of round”. Are the revisited at the end of EVERY round? Or are they a one time power?

    1. Thanks for playing Wingspan! There are 4 rounds in a game of Wingspan, and yes, end-of-round powers are activated at the end of each round.

  3. Does the bird tray get refilled between players activating their Teal (Round End) powers?

For instance, the round is over, the bird tray is full, and the 1st player now activates their Teal powers. As a result of their Teal power(s), the bird tray now has 0 birds face-up. Are the empty spots refilled prior to the next player activating their Teal powers? It seems like if not, the remaining players would get shafted if their Teal powers require interaction with the bird tray.

    1. After each player completes their teal power, refill the bird tray.
This was incorrect. The tray does not refill after each player completes their teal power.

  4. Hi,
I was wondering, if you have a horizontal bird (which has a white “action”) covering column 1 and 2. And you have different colors actions in the other places in column 1 and 2. Does the bonus card which says: “3 points for each column with 3 different action colors (i.e. teal, white, pink or brown) count for 2 columns? Or just for 1?

I hope my question is clear haha.

    Br,
    Niek

      1. Thanks for your fast reply! We indeed enjoy playing wingspan a lot, and hopefully we will keep enjoying it for a long time to come, the game is amazing, thanks for that.

        Br,
        Niek

  5. I have two questions. 1) Do the teal round-end powers apply to multiple rounds or only the round in which the bird card containing that teal power is played? 2) I suspect this question has already been answered, but I couldn’t easily find the answer. Is there some way to search this site for answers to questions like this? Thanks!

    1. Thanks for playing! Yes, all teal powers activate at the end of each round.

There are a few ways to search for rules questions. One is just to Google it, as the answer might appear on our website or on BoardGameGeek. The other is to ask here or in the Wingspan Facebook group (you’ll get a faster answer on Facebook, but we try to be fast here too). There are also some great rules references found at the following link (Rulepop, Wingsearch, and Wingsplain): https://stonemaiergames.com/games/wingspan/rules/

  6. I have a specific rules question.
“Wood Duck” can be played in the forest and states “WHEN ACTIVATED: draw 2 cards, if you do, discard one card from your hand at the end of your turn.”

“Common Chiffchaff” can also be played in the forest and states “WHEN ACTIVATED: choose between 1-5 birds in this habitat. Tuck 1 from your hand behind each.”

Player 1 has no cards in hand and activates the forest, takes their food and then activates wood duck first, drawing two cards, then activates the chiffchaff tucking both cards. Player 1 ends their turn and has no cards in hand and can no longer discard at the end of their turn due to wood duck.

Is this legal? Or does player 1 have to keep at least one card in hand at the end of turn in order to discard for wood duck?

I’ve tried googling and looking online, however the answers vary and its a bit debated. Can the original game designer clarify this situation?

    1. Kaleb: Thanks for your question, and as the developer of Wingspan, I’m happy to provide the official answer (I don’t want to bother Elizabeth, but she has spoken about this answer in the past).

The answer is that what you described this is legal; you don’t need to hold onto a card to meet the condition of the Wood Duck. I’m pretty sure that’s how I’ve heard Elizabeth answer it.

There’s also a wrinkle to this for a few cards (Great Crested Grebe and Wilson’s Storm Petrel) with slightly different text (“Draw 1 card for each empty card slot in this row. At the end of your turn, keep 1 and discard the rest.”) As noted in the appendix, “These cards should be kept separate from the other cards you draw and your bird cards in hand. They cannot be spent during this turn. But to keep the game moving, you can sort through them at the end of your turn and let the next player start their turn.”

  7. Do once between turns birds have power with round end teal birds. If tucking on a round end bird, is that considered between turns?

  8. Hello Stonemaier! We really love playing wingspan at our house, so we quickly expanded the game with all extensions. Our original game is in Danish, and works perfect, so we bought the European expansion in Danish as well. We were quite surprised/disappointed to learn that the translations were severely flawed, and that the wordings from the original translation, had been clumsily changed. It was so annoying that we gave up playing the Danish version, and have now purchased the English version in stead, but we would like it in Danish, in order to play with the kids. Are there any plans to make a new and better translation of the European expansion?

    1. Hi Rikke! Our Danish localization partner, Asmodee Nordics, is aware of their translation mistakes, and they’re working to fix them (feel free to contact them for more information about this). In the meantime, they’re on “probation” with us in that additional translations made by them in new products must be reviewed by third-party dual-language speakers.

      1. If you need help with a Danish review, my husband and I would love to help you out, no charge! (oops said that to fast, we probably will charge you: a Nesting Box! :-D)

      2. Hi!

I’ve read that the Swedish version has the same problem with a really bad translation. I do want the expansion in Swedish but not in the current state. Do you know if there is any plans for a new Swedish version of the European expansion and if that is the case, when?

  9. […] 24:27 – Wingspan European Expantion (Official Link) […]

  10. If you are using the expansion and you have the Geography bonus card can European in you bird name count towards the bonus?

    1. Yes! Page 2 of the English version of the European Expansion rulebook explains the additional words that count for the Cartographer bonus card, including Eurasian, European, Corsican, and Moor.

  11. Please tell me you have the European expansion available for iPad.
Alternatively, please tell me when you will.
    Thank you, Addicted

    1. The digital developer, Monster Couch, released Wingspan European for the iPad several months ago–it’s available now! :)

        1. Once you play it sideways, it remains that way for the rest of the game. I don’t have a sideways bird in front of me right now, but I’m pretty sure they give you the option when played to play them upright or sideways–that’s when you make the choice.

  12. Hi. We are confused by the EE bonus card called “Ethologist”. It says in any one habitat you get 2 points per power color. Does this mean if I have 5 cards, and 4 are brown powers and 1 is a white power, I get 10 points (5 power cards x2)….or do I get 4 points (brown and white x 2)..? Thanks

  13. Hi Jamey! I was just wondering about the new eco friendly versions for the European and Oceania expansions. How are they different from the old ones ? I am prepairing to buy both of them but I would really like to know the difference between versions as I already have the new eco friendly base game. Thank you for this great game!

    1. Bogdan: I’m glad you have the new eco-friendly base game! The impact on the expansions (when applicable) is that the card tray is sugarcane pulp instead of plastic, the eggs are wooden instead of plastic, and the plastic resource containers are sugarcane pulp instead of plastic. Also, all wood and plastic are FSC certified materials.

Here’s an article that shows the differences: https://stonemaiergames.com/are-our-games-eco-friendly-part-3/

    2. When playing a bird with a round end action, due to a round end condition, can I then use that newly played round end action? Say, yellowhammer plays lesser white throat(or any other round end bird).
I know the rules says that I can play round end actions in any order, but I have my doubts whether this combo is intentional?

  14. The Hooded Crow card reads: “Choose one other player. For each action cube on their [specific habitat], tuck 1 card from your hand behind this bird, then draw an equal number of cards.”

Is a player required to tuck cards in order to draw?

  15. Hello there! I have a question about the bonus card ethologist (europe). Do i need all the colours in the row to get points? I mean white, pink, teal and brown in for example water. And do i get 2 points for each colour or each set? (2 for forest, 2 for grass and 2 for water). Hope you understand and thanks for amazing games!

    1. Camilla: For the ethologist, because it says “in any one habitat,” it’s saying that you can choose one habitat (one row) and get 2 points per different color. So if you have 2 brown power cards, 1 white power card, and 1 pink power card in a row (and you choose that row), ignore the other two rows and gain 6 total points for this bonus card.

  16. […] try the Oceana Expansion yet, featuring birds from Australia and NZ. Next week we’ll have the European Expansion to play […]

  17. When you’ve played the Lesser Whitethroat AND the Black Redstart, do their blue powers work simultaneously or one after another? So for example, I have 5 cards in my forest without eggs on them… Do I get to lay 2 eggs on each card (using both the Lesser Whitethroat & Black Redstart at once), or do I use the Lesser Whitethroat first to lay 1 egg on each card, thus filling up the empty cards with eggs, meaning I can no longer use the Black Redstart on those five cards anymore?

I hope this question makes sense. Thank you!

    1. Olivia: I don’t have those cards in front of me, but generally you can choose the order in which cards activate if they have end-of-round or once-between-turns abilities. You’ll activate them one at a time.

      1. To further this explanation and attempt to interpret, you must fully activate and complete the blue powers one at a time. So short answer, no you cannot lay 2 eggs on both of them, using both blue powers.

In your case, the lesser whitethroat and black redstart do the same thing, so this is a great example: End of round, select a row with no eggs, and lay one on each bird.

Lets say end of round comes and only your forest has no eggs in it. Lets say lesser whitethroat goes first. Lay an egg on each forest bird. Once that is done, now black redstart would attempt to activate, however you no longer have any rows with no eggs, so it is not able to activate.

        Hope that helps!

  18. Hi, in the online version of the game on Steam, the mute swan counts as a bird with a tucking power and Eleonora’s falcon also counts for the falconer bonus card. But the cards I have at home from the physical game do not have those symbols. Is it a mistake? Do they count or no? And if not, why not? I’m asking because this has generated some confusion amongst the players I regularly play with…

  19. Hello do the Teal end of round powers activate after every round or just the end of the round they are played in? Thanks

  20. Are teal (end of round) powers optional? Can a player refuse to take an action of her teal power eg. lay an egg per Black Redstart, when the end of round goal is “birds with no eggs”.

  21. Hello, we couldn’t find any clarification for this one goal, the birds with tucked cards end of round goal. As it has the symbol for flocking, do all birds need to have the flocking symbol to qualify or do the predator birds that can tuck cards also qualify for this goal? We couldn’t find any information on this and it’s caused a bit of friction as I view the entire goal including the symbol for flocking need to be met.

    1. Michael: Thanks for your question. The flocking symbol is synonymous with tucked cards, so it’s looking for any bird that has at least 1 card tucked under it.

      1. So if it is tucked for any reason, including the predatory birds that tuck cards, or if another flocking bird tucks cards under another bird, such as what the Mute Swan does? I just saw the flocking symbol on the end of round goal and took it literally as birds needed that symbol to be included.

        1. Yes, the meaning of this goal tile is that you count each of your birds with at least 1 tucked card. The powers on those birds is completely irrelevant to this goal tile.

  22. Thanks for the quick response! Another question: Birds with teal powers that count double towards end-of-round goals e.g. Greylag Goose, Eurasian Green Woodpecker – does one count their food cost twice for the “Food Cost of Played Birds” goal? Appendix states that eggs on the bird don’t double for this goal, but not sure about food.

My take would be birds are counted twice for the following goals:
    – Birds in X habitat
    – Birds in one row
    – Birds with X nest type (with egg)
    – Birds with no eggs
    – Birds with Brown powers / White & No Powers
    – Birds with tucked cards
    – Birds worth >4 / ≤3 points
    – Birds with beak pointing L/R

And aren’t doubled for the following:
    – Food cost of played birds (including subsets i.e invertebrate, fruit+seed, fish+rodent)
    – Eggs in X habitat
    – Sets of 3 eggs in each habitat

    Is this correct? Thanks!

  23. The Coal Tit’s ability states “…At any time you may spend seeds cached on this card”.
The Eurasian Nutcracker’s ability is: “Choose 1-5 birds in your woodlands. Cache 1 seed from your supply on each.

Does the seed cached on the Coal Tit count as being “in your supply” / can I use it for the Nutcracker’s ability? Thanks!

    1. (the Bird Powers section in the Appendix states the seed can’t be used in this manner for end-of-round powers, but doesn’t specify re brown powers a la the nutcracker. I’m presuming it’s the same, but thought I’d check)

  24. In the European Expansion, does the turquoise power {end of round action} happen before or after the general End of Round Goals?

    1. Before. You can see this on the End of Round reference tile (the first step is “Round end bird powers”). :)

  25. Hello, thank you for a great game & great customer service! For the European expansion, we were wondering if 5 is the maximum # of birds that can be in a habitat? Specifically:
    1) Can sideways birds be used in the 5th column to make 6 columns?
    2) can “count double toward the end-of-round goal” teal birds be used in a full habitat to count 6 birds in a row?

    1. Thanks for your questions. You’re limited to 5 columns, so you could not play a sideways bird over the 5th bird in a column. But yes, for the purposes of the goals, a teal bird could make it seem like you have more than 5 birds.

  26. […] is the long-awaited first expansion to Wingspan by Stonemaier Games. The Wingspan: European Expansion adds over 80 European bird cards, new coloured eggs and some special new bird […]

    1. This is a letter from my 11yo son David who is a crazy bird enthusiast in East Africa…
I am here to tell you Wingspan is my favorite game ever and to ask you to make an East African or African expansion. I would also recommend adding reptiles as a possible new food source. If you do add reptiles you could replace the side of the dice with the seeds/invertebrates with reptiles, or you could use a die with more than six sides.
I am also happy to send suggestions for birds if your interested.
      Thanks for the great game!

      1. Thank you, Stephanie and David! Our plan is to make expansions for every continent, including Africa. I like your idea about reptiles!

  27. Hi. When playing a card on top of another one that has food on it. Should I discard the food as well like I do with the eggs? Thanks

    1. Yes, I believe that’s always correct. But if you’d like me to double-check, please mention which bird power you’re referencing. Thanks!

  28. Hey, what if I have a common blackbird covering two slots in my forest area another forest area bird to the right of my common blackbird and I decide to play my eurasian hobby by tucking my common blackbird? Do I put my eurasian hobby horizontally? Does it go to the most left available slot and does the third forest bird move all the way to the left?

  29. Hi there, question regarding some pink powered birds. If I’m playing a two player game with someone, and I have played the Snow Bunting (tuck a card when another player ticks a card) and my opponent has played the European Goldfinch (same ability). If on my opponents turn she tucks, and I activate my snow bunting, does that mean that her European Goldfinch is also activated?

    1. Your own pink powers can only activate on other players’ turns. So you can’t activate your Snow Bunting on your turn.

  30. When is the European Expansion gonna be available on Steam? I’m not talking about the Tabletopia version. I have the other version on Steam (there’s two versions). I see the version for Tabletopia was released. Really looking forward to it being released in the other format.

  32. Hi
We’ve been playing wingspan for some time and purchased the European expansion.
with the new teal bird powers ( end of round powers.)
Do the powers activate only at the end of the round they were played in
or at the end of each round in the game ?
    Thanks Paul

  33. Hi,

I have just purchased the Oceana expansion and thought that combing this with the base game would be two many birds (I wouldn’t see the Oceana birds as much as I would like) so I bought the European expansion as well. I plan to play with these two expansions to keep the total birds in the deck similar to what was provided in the base game.

I have one concern about playing with these two expansions together. The cards that allow you to steal another players food from their supply and then they get a new food from the bird feeder seem very powerful when nectar is included in the game (especially when there is no nectar available in the bird feeder). I was considering allowing the player who got their food stolen to choose between, taking a new food type from the bird feeder (as the card suggests), or replacing the stolen food with the same food from the supply. Would this work? I don’t like changing rules to games but if the designer says it’s ok then the change feels fine.

Alternatively, could you provide a list of birds from the base game that could be used to replace the stealing birds while maintaining the balance with bonus cards and food powers etc in the European expansion?

Or Is there a list of base game birds that can be used that half’s the amount of base game birds while maintaining balance?

    Thanks in advance 🙂

    1. Josh: Thanks for your question! You’re welcome to discuss potential house rules in the Wingspan Facebook group. We’re happy with the rules as printed–that’s why we printed them that way. :)

        1. We have played Wingspan with the European Expansion and Oceana expansion combined. It has taken wingspan from a game we really like to a game we really love.

You were right, no house rules were needed at all.

Thanks for a great game 🙂

  34. Does this expansion work with the swedish edition of Wingspan?
Is there a plan of releasing this expansion in swedish?

  36. If one has played multiple birds with the round-end power to play another bird if all of the actions have been taken and the bird cost can be paid, can multiple birds be played in a single round-end, being triggered by the same single condition?

    1. Yes, if you have multiple round-end powers allowing you to play one bird each, then you can play multiple birds.

  37. I really do enjoy the base game, but will this expansion and the upcoming expansion be available in Danish like the base game. Keep up the good work 👍

    1. Hi Nikolaj! We only publish the English versions of our games. It’s up to Asmodee Nordics to announce the Danish-language expansions. :)

  38. I think I am playing the Automa wrong with using both the old and new set of End-of-Round Goal cards? Did I make it harder? Am I supposed to use one set?

    1. The new End-of-Round Goal Cards from the expansion list the new goals provided in that expansion. So you’re supposed to use the new and old ones according to the goals you have during that game. It sounds like you’ve been playing correctly. :)

    2. Joe is correct. They are designed to be mixed up and it shouldn’t make it harder or easier.
In case it helps, keep in mind that you don’t need to win all the End-of-Round goals to beat Automa.
      Have fun,
      David

  39. Hi! Just curious if you plan on releasing just the end of round goals from this expansion. I will be purchasing the oceania expansion when it releases but cant afford both oceania and europe. But I really love what the end of round goals offer in europe expansion.
Probably expecting a no, but seeing you guys do replacement pieces is there a way I could buy them?

  40. Love the game – bought the European expansion live and loving it. I’ve used the code to purchase Wingspan digitally on Steam but, disappointingly, it is missing the European Expansion. Any plans on introducing it? I’d happily fork out something reasonable for it!

    1. Hi Damien! Monster Couch publishes Wingspan Digital, and they’ll release the European Expansion after they’ve finished releasing Wingspan Digital on more platforms.

  41. Hi I have the Wingspan game. Can you use the European bird cards and play the game without shuffling them into the deck of the other bird card? Thanks

  42. Would the “T’RUMP’eter Swan” Bird count towards the bonus card “Anatomist” because it has the word ‘rump’ in it.?

    1. Following the rules strictly, only the words listed on the Anatomist card count. But you’re free to make your own house rules. :)

  43. Hi, Can you mix wingspan swedish version (upcomning) with this expansion in english? Are they compatible with each other? Will there be a swedish version of this expansion?

    1. Yes, it’s the same game, just in different languages. As for a Swedish version of the expansion, that’s up to our partner in Sweden to decide and reveal. :)

      1. Ok i thought it would be some issue with bonus cards that involves bird names if you mix different languages.

What company is your partner in Sweden? :)

  44. A fantastic game! It is a pity that there is no hoopoe (Upupa epops) in the Wingspan European Expansion. But other birds are also fascinating!

  45. Hi! I got the Romanian version of the base game – my language – and I have to say I was very impressed, great job! Will there be any translations for the European and Oceania expansions into Romanian as well? I would like to play with my young daughter, it’s a great way of teaching about birds, and I think it would be a pitty not to be able to have the birds from our region or other parts of the world. Cheers!

    1. Andrei: I hope so! That’s up to our Romanian publishing partner, so make sure to tell them that you want Romanian expansions. :)

  46. Hey Jamey, my family and I absolutely love Wingspan! During this quarantine we’ve been playing it almost daily.

My family and I have an ongoing (friendly) debate that occurs when the bird “European Goldfish” is played. This is a bird with a pink power that reads, “Once Between Turns: When another player a card for any reason, tuck one card from the deck behind this card”

We understand the ‘once between turns’ part meaning when everyone is playing their cubes and taking their turn.
Where the debate occurs is when we are in the “Round End” phase activating the blue powers. The question we have is, If someone has played the bird, European Goldfish, do they get to tuck a card when another player tucks because of their blue power? In other words they are tucking with their pink power because someone else tucked using their blue power.

Some people say yes because it’s in between turns in the since that it’s after the last players turn and right before the first players turn, but me and some others say no because it’s an entirely different phase of the game. It’s no longer in between turns because the turns are over, it’s now the end of the round.

Will you help us with the correct answer. Are they allowed to tuck or not?

    Thank you so much!

    1. Here’s what the rulebook says about Round End (Teal) powers: “Round end powers do NOT activate “once between turns” (pink) powers.”

So no, tucking during the Round End phase would not activate a pink power. Think of it this way: pink powers are activated during other players’ turns, and the Round End phase is no one’s turn.

  47. when we played eurasion magpie(exp card(
it said, we can cache 1 food from the supply on any of your birds. is it mean we gain 1 food depend on our birds card are on our hand or birds are in the player mat?

        1. As mentioned in the Appendix for the Eurasian Magpie: “These powers can be used to cache food on birds that otherwise do not have caching powers.”

  48. Hi Jamey,

Me and my parents love playing Wingspan!
In one of our last games we got into an arguement about the pink ability of the Oriole (when another player takes the ‘gain food’ action, gain either one invertebrate or one fruit from the bird feeder at the end of their turn):

I got the Oriole on my board.

After my dad finished his ‘gain food’ action, I tossed all five dice again (every dice was the same before). But after that the dice still didn’t match with the ability of my Oriole. So I didn’t get any food out of the birdfeeder and my dads’ turn was over.

After that (same round) my mom also gained food. Now there’s my question:
Am I allowed to try another time activating the pink ability of my Oriole?

My Opinion: Since I didn’t actually gain food once between turns, I did not activate the pink ability the first time. Even though I tossed the dice trying to activate it at my dad’s turn right before.

Thank you very much! Any guidance would be helpful!

    Greetings from Germany!

    Alex

    1. That’s a question I haven’t seen asked before, Alex! But I’m afraid I can’t rule in your favor. Choosing to reroll the dice is choosing to activate the Oriole’s pink power, and that can only be done once between turns.

  49. Hi Jamey, is there any chance of a condensed version of the expansion? Of the components listed is there a way to just get the:
    -81 bird cards
    -5 bonus cards
    -5 goal tiles
We haven’t played single player in our house, have never come close to running out of eggs or food and already have the tray + lid. I’d be happy to pay the exact same price but feel as though the 3 necessary components could fit neatly in a small deck. If not, I will most likely still buy this just thought I’d check. Cheers

    1. I appreciate you asking, Matt, but that’s not an option we offer. We won’t be including a tray in every expansion, so it will become particularly helpful for storage when we release the Oceania expansion.

  50. Hi Jamey,

I’m sure there is a very good reason for this, but after a quick google nothing has come up… How come the expansion box is slightly taller than the base game box? The expansion fits perfectly into the base game box anyway, so I merely ask out of curiosity.

Also, in your recent video about games that play remotely you didn’t give a shout out to Wingspan? I know you don’t pick Stonemaier games for the top 10 but I was listening out for an honourable mention. We just played Wingspan with friends this evening over FaceTime and it worked brilliantly! :-)

    1. Benjamin: That was the height we determined was necessary to fit everything into the expansion box. As for playing Wingspan and our other games remotely, I applaud people who are doing it, but it doesn’t meet several of the guidelines I outlined in my video.

      1. Hi Jamey, very true, the player interaction when using the green side of the goal board is a great part of Wingspan, but naturally requires being able to see everyone’s boards. We used the blue side of the goal board so that it was less necessary to know what other players were doing. We shared the same goal tiles and food dice. We just did our own bonus and bird cards, but because there are so many different bonus and bird cards in the game we didn’t have any crossover.
Thanks for all the suggestions in your video btw, we tried Quacks at the weekend and it worked really well.

  51. Hello Jamey, My wife and I have been playing even more WINGSPAN while being self-quarantined. In one game we ran into two situations with the European Expansion bird “Eurasian Green Woodpecker” (Blue Power – Round End: This bird counts double toward the end-of-round goal, if it qualifies for the goal.).

    1) Our first round end-of-round goal was “Bird Cards in Hand”. Our interpretation was this bird cannot count as double for this goal since it wouldn’t “qualify” (i.e., it cannot be “in hand” and have been played). The Blue Power is only applicable once that bird is played on the mat. Is this interpretation correct?

    2) Our fourth round end-of-round goal was “Birds with Cavity Nest with at least one Egg”. Our interpretation was the Eurasian Green Woodpecker would count as two birds with a cavity nest since it had at least one egg on it. The OTHER POWERS (Page 10 of the European Expansion Rule Book) for the Eurasian Green Woodpecker states “Eggs on these cards are not doubled, if the goal is counting the number of eggs.” In our case we were counting the number of BIRDS with a cavity nest with an egg. Is this interpretation correct?

Thank you. Any guidance you provide will be appreciated.

    Stan

    1. 1. That’s correct! No power has effect until it’s played.

      2. Correct! It’s counting the bird, so it counts as two for that end round goal.

  52. Question about Aotuma rules in Wingspan European Expansion,
I can’t find the relevant rule description.

  53. On behalf of my BF, who LOVES the bird and was very bummed not to find it in the European expansion… Why is the common pheasant (phasianus colchicus) absent? :)
Apart from that, we absolutely adore everything Wingspan, and can’t wait to see more expansions coming our way.

    1. The common pheasant’s original range extended across Asia and only barely overlapped with Europe: The common pheasant populations further west into Europe have been introduced by humans. It stands to reason that they’d be more likely to show up in an Asian expansion than a European one anyway. Judging by the bird selections we’ve seen so far, such a well-known species probably has a good chance of being included. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_pheasant#/media/File:Phasianus_colchicus_map.svg

  54. Question about teal powers – do they activate
e y round after the bird is played, or only the 1st round end after it is played?

    1. Teal powers activate only at the end of each round (not each turn–there are 4 total rounds in the game, as shown on the goal board).

  55. Hi Jamie, My 8-year-old loves this game and studies these cards intensely. He’s memorized many of the cards and noticed a few mistakes on the expansion cards: Mute Swan (no flocking power symbol), Greater Flamingo (colored brown rather than blue), and possibly Common Swift and House Sparrow (rulebook indicates should be “any food” rather than the specific food indicated?). We were curious if new cards would be issued through the website. Thanks!

    1. Your son is correct about Mute Swan, but the others are correct as printed. The appendix uses examples to explain concepts–it doesn’t use the exact text of every card. And no, a replacement card for the Mute Swan isn’t necessary.

  56. Plz clarify the difference (for brown powers to cache food) between “the supply” vs “your supply”. Specifically the Eurasian Nutcracker states ….”cache 1 grain from YOUR supply”….
One player thinks the grain should be taken from food tokens in that player’s hand. Another player thinks they should come out of the general supply of food tokens. Which is correct?
Tks much and we’re loving the European Expansion!

    1. Hi Janis! “Your supply” is the food you have personally gathered. “The supply” is the general supply. The Eurasian Nutcracker’s seeds do come from your supply as written, not the general supply.

  57. Is a new expansion planned covering birds of Australia, or Australia plus New Zealand, or even Oceania as a whole?

    1. Each expansion will cover the birds of an entire continent, so there will be an expansion that covers Oceania at some point.

  58. How do birds that are played on top of other birds (Common Buzzard) interact with birds that are played sideways Common Blackbird)? Does the top bird count as covering both spaces, as if it were played sideways?

  59. Absolutely love it that your preorder system flows so smoothly. I have never had any trouble getting online with your servers and getting my order in. Even when ordering in the first 10-15 minutes of going LIVE when servers are usually swamped with people trying to order. Thanks for making such great games and helping to produce and promote games by others like Elizabeth Hargrave. Your game design abilities and the way that you run your company are things that other designers and game manufacturers/distributors should strive to be like.

  60. Is there a specific time that pre-orders will open? I’ve been checking back every 15 minutes since 7am EST!

  61. Question: Will Stonemaier Champions receive the game any earlier than Nov 22nd when pre-ordering on the 6th? I’m trying to decide what the difference/benefit is between ordering direct from Stonemaier versus ordering from Amazon Prime.

    Excited to play!

    1. We’ll ship out our orders starting on the 6th and Champion orders will go out first. Assuming no problems arise, you should get the expansion before the 22nd. :)

  62. I know I am probably very late, but I’d really love if you could include an additional player board in the box. With the additional bird cards, egg and resource tokens, I believe the game can easily handle six players, rather than five.

    1. You could purchase one of the play mats to accommodate another player. However, this would likely make the game last longer than most would be interested in for this weight of a game. Of course, if that is not an issue for your group the play mat would be an easy option for you.

      1. Thank you for your answer. Do you have any recommendations where can I get a player mat in the UK or Germany? Nothing came up from my search, which is why I ask. I don’t live in either country, but I use a freight forwarding service that maintains shipping locations in both countries. A French retailer would also do fine.

        Thanks a lot in advance,
        Zhivko

        1. Zhivko: Our fulfillment center is in the UK, and we’ll be offering the player mats for sale in just a few hours.

  63. I don’t want a box. How about selling this for less and just putting the cards inside a playing card deck. Why should I pay for all the extra stuff that isn’t necessary to the actual expansion?

  64. Hi! I’m so excited for this expansion and eagerly awaiting the opening of the pre-order. Will the swift-start promo pack of cards also be available for purchase? (not the neoprene mats)

    1. Yes! I’m happy to say the Swift Start promo will be available at the same time as the European Expansion. :)

      -Joe at Stonemaier

  65. Can I add the Wingspan Update Pack together with the European Expansion (on Nov 6th) without any delivery delays? I live in Europe by the way.

  66. Hi Jamey, in your newsletter, you mention that preorders for the expansion will begin on November 6 at 9:30am CDT. Won’t we be switching to CST by then? Can you clarify, so that we’ll calculate our local times appropriately? Thanks!

    1. Indeed, that was just a typo. It will be at 9:30am Central (local St. Louis time). Thanks for checking!

      -Joe at Stonemaier

  67. Glad to see a European Portuguese version from Diver. Thinking of swap my English version, to support this amazing initiative.

Hope to see the expansion translated too.
    An amazing game. Congratulations.

    1. Just contact divercentro, who release the main game in Portugal, and they not promise the release! If so, only in 2020, depending on sales of wingspan. So I think I am gonna buy the English version instead.

  68. Hello Jamey,

My wife and I are looking forward to the European Expansion of Wingspan. We think this great game will be even better. Based on our initial review of the additional rules and Appendix, we have a question on one of the End-of-Round Goal Tiles:

Food Cost of Played Birds – Count the food cost on your birds, remembering to count only 1 food for birds that have a choice in their food cost.

We think there are two different categories of “choices” in relation to food costs. For example: Would the “count only 1 food for birds that have a choice” apply to birds with a ” / ” in their food cost (like the SONG SPARROW: INVERTEBRATE / SEED / FRUIT), birds with a “WILD symbol” in their food cost (like the FISH CROW: FISH + WILD) or both types of bird food costs?

In this example, we thought the SONG SPARROW would count as “1” when counting the food costs for this End-of-Round Goal Tile, and the FISH CROW would count as “2”.

    Thank you.

    1. Stan: Thanks for your comment. That goal tile’s clarification is referring to the “/” in food costs. You’re correct about Song Sparrow counting as 1 and Fish Crow counting as 2.

  69. We actually did run out of seeds tokens recently in a four-player game when multiple players were caching lots of them on their birds. I can imagine it’s quite rare, but it’s good we’ll have more!

  70. i’m curious if there will be czech translation. base game translation already have and it!s great!

  71. Hi, so, just to be clear, does the neoprene mat will ship from regional fulfillment during the preorder period (like the swift-start promo pack), and if it’s the case, witch one ?

It seem like a must have to me, but I would like to avoid custom fees and as the preorder is past the brexit deadline, also avoid UK fulfillment center.

    1. Yes, it will be available at all regional fulfillment centers (US, Canada, Europe, and Australia). Brexit will not impact it.

  72. Would it be playable with just the expansion cards, or would it throw off the bonus card % or something ? I usually play either solo or 2 player, so card quantity should not be an issue.

    1. Each expansion will focus on a different continent, so I think you’ll see tropical birds appear in a number of expansions. There’s a flamingo in the base game!

      1. Unfortunately there is no Flamingo in the basegame I have purchased … Should there always be? Is there a possibility to get hold this bird, would love to add it to the basegame!

        1. There are lots of birds not in the game you purchased–there are just too many birds! :) I’m sure the flamingo will appear in a future expansion.

  73. Is there a specific order you have to activate end of round abilities, or is it in an order of player choice? e.g. If I had a bird with a predator ability in hand would I be able to use the Lesser Whitethroat to play it before activating the Griffon Vulture reguardless of where they were on my player mat, or is there something specific in layout they’d need to be to combo them in that way?

  74. As one of the people who occasionally runs out of food tokens (usually in 4-5 player games when someone has a bird who piles lots of grain on its card) the extra tokens are much appreciated :)

  75. Any chance there will be some kind of discount if buying the new version of Wingspan along with the European bird expansion – something less than $85?

  76. I am so delighted that the expansion is coming out! Is it possible that game and expansion could be made in Serbian? Thanks!

  77. It will be really good to have some familiar birds besides all those alien American critters

  78. Does the expansion add any new rules/mechanics or is it just additional cards? I have pre-ordered the expansion either way at my FLGS, as I’m ok getting it a few weeks later (too busy playing Tapestry at the moment!)

    1. It adds very few new rules, making it really easy to combine the expansion with the base game. However, there are quite a few new mechanisms on the bird cards.

      1. Hey Stephen, thanks for the question! Here’s a quote from Jamey when someone recently asked the same question:
“We might sell them separately in 2020–we’ll see! :)”

        -Joe at Stonemaier

    1. Stonemaier only sells English versions of our games. If you’d like the French version, please contact Matagot.
