You are an amateur dracologist in the world of Wyrmspan, a place where dragons of all shapes, sizes, and colors roam the skies. Excavate a hidden labyrinth you recently unearthed on your land and entice these beautiful creatures to roost in the sanctuary of your caves.

During a game of Wyrmspan, you will build a sanctuary for dragons of all shapes and sizes. Your sanctuary begins with 3 excavated spaces—the leftmost space in your Crimson Cavern, your Golden Grotto, and your Amethyst Abyss. Over the course of the game, you will excavate additional spaces in your sanctuary and entice dragons to live there, chaining together powerful abilities and earning the favor of the Dragon Guild.

Wyrmspan is inspired by the mechanisms of Wingspan, though its 16+ unique elements make Wyrmspan a standalone game (not compatible with Wingspan).

Components

Wyrmspan plays up to 5 players, and it is flexible in size for various tables due to 3 smaller central boards (instead of a single big game board). Each player mat is 475x290mm (a little wider than Wingspan). It includes:

  • 2 rulebooks (multiplayer and solo)
  • 1 dragon fact book (32 pages)
  • 5 player mats (cardboard)
  • 5 adventurer meeples and 5 guild tokens
  • 183 dragon cards (148 full-grown dragons and 35 hatchlings; 57x87mm)
  • 75 cave cards (57x57mm)
  • 4 dragon guilds
  • 55 speckled egg tokens
  • 10 double-sided objective tiles
  • 45 shiny cardboard coins
  • 10 quick-start cards (2 cards per player; 57x87mm)
  • 17 Automa solo mode cards (57x87mm)
  • 1 box (296x296x70mm, and it weighs 2.6 kg)
  • 2 containers with lids for eggs and resources
  • 1 scorepad
  • and more!

Natural rubber playmats and metal coin/wooden resource upgrade packs are available on our webstore as optional add-ons, along with a promo realm for Rolling Realms, a custom disc golf disc, and “golden” metal eggs. If a product is out of stock, please enter your email on the webstore product listing and we’ll notify you this summer when the reprint arrives.

Estimated Schedule

  • January 3: announcement and beginning of design diaries (subscribe to updates)
  • January 22: first day for reviewers and content creators to share their thoughts on advance copies of the game
  • January 31: Product launch on the Stonemaier webstore (around 10:00 am Central; slightly earlier for the Australia webstore (9:00 pm AET) for time zone reasons.
    • The exact time you complete your Wyrmspan order on January 31 does not impact the day it will be sent relative to other orders–our fulfillment centers ship in optimized batches. We can’t combine multiple orders placed by the same person, and cancelling a placed order causes logistical issues at our fulfillment centers. So please take your time that day to put exactly everything in your cart that you want before checking out.
  • February/March: Initial orders ship to customers from fulfillment centers in the US, Canada, Europe, and Australia. Champion orders will all most likely ship out by the end of February (our fulfillment centers have a LOT of orders to fulfill), followed by non-Champion orders in March. You will receive a tracking notification when your order ships. You can subscribe to general updates here.
  • March 29, 2024: worldwide retail release

    1. From the Wyrmspan FAQ:

Why is Stonemaier Games releasing Wyrmspan instead of working on the next Wingspan expansion?

They’re entirely independent of each other–different designers, different processes. Nothing about Wyrmspan conflicted with her design process for the next Wingspan expansion, nor did anything about Wyrmspan alter anything about the release schedule for Wingspan expansions. Plus, the previous expansion, Wingspan Asia, just released 1 year ago–it really hasn’t been that long. We typically release expansions every other year for Wingspan, and Elizabeth needs time to work on other projects (like Undergrove).

Wyrmspan does not invalidate or replace Wingspan (or any Wingspan products). They are not the same game.

  1. Cackling Dragonette Says when you tuck a dragon gain guild. I had explored and enticed dragons so the whole row was full. I explored and made it to the tuck up to 2 dragon from your hand behind any dragon. If i tucked 2 cards behind the cackling dragonette do i get 1 or 2 guild?

    1. You get a dragon guild advancement for every card you tuck behind the Cackling Dragonette, so you would get 2 guild in this example. Thanks for playing!

  2. Hi Jamey!
We finally got to play the game after gifting it to my fiance for her birthday. Holding in the cupboard for that long was hard. We had an excellent time saying it (6 times already). I’m impressed at how different it feels to wingspan, whilst being based on the same fundamentals.

We bought the rubber playmats, but they are about 3mm too tall to fit in the box in either orientation. I see you’ve said they should fit, so I’m not sure if we got a small box, or big mat. Any help would be appreciated!

    Keep doing what you do!

    1. Thanks Jack! My playments fit in the upper half of the box, but the box gets tighter the close you get to the bottom of the box. So I would recommend keeping the mats on top of all other components. If that still doesn’t work, you could use a paper cutter to trim a few millimeters from the mat.

  3. Hi There! I’m loving this game. What’s the best place to go to get a deck box for the dragon cards and cave cards?

    1. Thanks Peter! I’m not aware of any deck boxes, but if you post about what you’re looking for in the Wyrmspan Facebook group, people might have some ideas to share. There’s also a thread pinned at the top of that group about third-party accessories.

  4. I’m loving the game, and the artwork is is gorgeous to look at. I hope neoprene game mats will be made in the future.

    1. We have rubber playmats on our webstore! :) They are sold out temporarily in some regions, but if you sign up for a back-in-stock notification, we’ll let you know in a few months when the reprint is ready.

  5. Just played a friends copy of this game, and happy to say that i’m putting it straight on my birthday gift list!!

  6. Absolutely love this game! Highly recommend! I know its new but I hope the game manufacturer comes out with expansion packs for this game.

    1. Thanks Linda! We are currently considering the idea of an expansion for Wyrmspan. What would you like to see in it?

  7. wingspan, scythe, and wyrmspan…. keep it up and i wont even need to look to another company for a game…. scythe is close to taking over my overall favorite game from XIA.

  8. When you get a card that says you can excavate a cave for free… does that mean free from using the silver coin or are the eggs also free?

    1. Thanks for playing Wyrmspan! The language those cards use is to “play a cave for free”. It isn’t an excavate action, so there’s no coin cost. The “free” is saying that you don’t pay the egg cost shown at the top of the column.

  9. It would be so helpful to have the guild board as a mat. The cardboard version quickly warps and spins – very frustrating when trying to keep your cubes in the right spaces.

    1. I hear you! One other option is to cut out the center of the guild board so you can place the tile inside.

  10. I love the game! I only have one complaint. The red and green are quite difficult to tell the difference between for us colour blind folks.

I have the most common colour blindness (red/green) so I can imagine this may be an issue for a big bunch of folks.

    1. Thanks for your observation! Using the Colorblind Pal app, I tried to use versions of these colors that were distinguishable, but I’m sorry we did not accomplish that goal for you. Fortunately, the only place this matters is for the end-of-game scoring cubes, of which there typically aren’t many.

  11. I enjoy the game. I feel like it’s harder to get going. It’s a real struggle for resources, eggs, cards. I ordered the playmat and it’s killing my OCD in the bottom right corner where the 2 eggs are separated on different lines. It’s bigger than the board in the box, so I don’t know what happened at the printer.

  12. The book of lore and backgrounds on the dragons is a great touch. Made the game longer because my group really enjoyed reading about our newly placed dragons.

  13. When packing what receptacle do you recommend putting all the items in? What should go in the, only, two bins? Should the cards really just live in bags? Really, bags for cards?

    1. Here’s what we say in the FAQ (https://stonemaiergames.com/games/wyrmspan/rules-faq/):

What exactly do I gain when using this ability: “Tuck a dragon card from your hand here to gain [any resource] of the cost printed on the tucked dragon.”?

For these dragons, you gain any 1 resource (meat, milk, gem, or gold) in the cost of the tucked dragon card. You do not gain all resources in that cost, as there is only 1 “any resource” icon in the ability description. Coins are not a resource (they’re not one of the colors of the “any resource” icon), so you can’t gain coins or eggs from this ability.

  14. Hi Jamey, I played my first game a few days ago, and it was an excellent experience! My one drawback is the game can run long. We took 3.5 hours to play (gasp). Final turns still have 6 coins/actions to spend (unlike Wingspan), plus if you’re playing well and get the right cards, you can add 1, 2, or even 3+ actions to that last stage. Any unofficial (or official!) recommendations on how to make the game a bit shorter? My thought was, 5 coins/actions per round, straight up. Would that be a good house rule, or have you playtested it to where that’s a bad idea, and if so, what’s a good idea to slightly shorten play time?

    1. James: Thanks for playing Wyrmspan! My top answer is to play a few more times before changing the extensively playtested rules of the game. :) Learning games take longer, not just for the rules, but because it’s harder to plan ahead for your turn and longer to execute a full explore turn when you’re learning. My experience is that once players get better at those two aspects of the game, the game speeds up quite a bit. If you’re still seeing games over 2 hours at that point, feel free to experiment with income of 5 coins per round instead of 6 to see how it goes.

    2. I’ll just add from our experience, a big thing that makes games quicker as players have more experience is being able to more quickly assess what they gain from the Explore action. In Wingspan, when you activate a row, you take 1 main action printed on the board, e.g., “Gain 2 cards”. In contrast, in Wyrmspan, you gain multiple smaller benefits, e.g. “Gain 1 resource” and “Gain one Dragon guild advancement, which nets you something variable”. In first plays, people are understandably careful when taking these benefits to get the rules correct, and a common sequence I’ve seen is for someone to take a meat, gain a Dragon guild advancement, realize they are getting another meat, and put the first meat back and take something else, with permission from the table. By the end of the first game, players are usually more aware of what each Explore is getting them, and those actions are significantly quicker.

      1. Thanks for this update. If I pre-ordered through my online retailer, will I still get it in March (i.e. the regular first round of deliveries) as opposed to having to wait that 5 months? In other words, are the retailers getting their allocations on time (end of March is what mine is saying)?

        1. Retailers who secured their order quantities with distributors should have their copies on March 29 (the games are arriving at distributor warehouses with plenty of time, but the distributors manage their own logistics for retailers). So, certain elements of this are out of our control, but as far as we know, yes, March 29. :)

  15. Really enjoying the game! I have a few questions about the Hawkish Firevern dragon card. The ability says “Tuck [dragon card] from your hand here to gain [resource symbol] of the cost printed on the tucked dragon.”
    1. Do you gain only 1 of the resources listed on the cost of the tucked card, or all of them?
    2. If there is a coin in the cost of the tucked card, can a coin be gained?

    1. Thanks Megan! We have a visual example of this on the FAQ page, but I’m happy to answer here as well. The ability only mentions 1 resource, so you gain 1 resource, not all resources in the cost. And coins are not a resource (they’re not one of the colors of the “any resource” icon), so you can’t gain a coin from this ability.

      1. Hi Jamey, loving the game. A follow up question on the Hawkish Firevern. If I play this card in the Grotto and then go exploring through the end of the row, can I then tuck two more cards under it (the end of this row allows me to tuck two cards from my hand under any exploring dragon) and then gain two more resources? To be clear, I am still using the “exploring” power to tuck the two additional cards when I get to the end of the Grotto, and have already “explored” this card earlier in the row.

        1. Thanks Sarah! The Hawkish Firevern’s ability is an “if activated” ability; so it’s only activated when your adventurer meeple is on top of the card (this happens at most once during an Explore action).

  16. Just played my first game of Wyrmspan. While I’m certainly not putting Wingspan away any time soon, I did enjoy his; the dragon theme is great, I liked the mechanics, and the ‘field guide’ is perfect for when my opponent was taking too long to decide on their turn. XD I just have a couple questions that came up during play: first, what happens when you activate a hatchling after it already has three resources cached on it and you gained the benefit? Nothing, or do you continue to cache and benefit for every third item? Second, when you reach the final spot in a fully-excavated Crimson Cavern, can you cache two resources on the same dragon? Thanks!

    1. Thanks, Hazel! For the Hatchlings, the first two abilities are still possible even after you’ve trigged the third ability (which can only be triggered once per game).

Yes, for the Crimson Cavern ability, they can be cached on the same dragon (including a hatchling to trigger its second ability).

      1. Wow, I didn’t expect a reply so quickly! Thanks Jamey for answering!

So, just to check my understanding, then: if someone had a Savanna Dragonet which let them cache milk to gain crystals, If I understand correctly, then, you could continue to cache milk and gain crystals indefinitely, while only advancing two on the Guild one time? (which…actually makes sense, since there can only be one ‘third’ milk). Thanks again!

(seriously, I only discovered your company and Wingspan last month and am amazed by what I found; can’t wait to see what you have in store for the future!)

        1. My pleasure! That’s what we’re here for. Also, in the Wyrmspan Facebook group is really fast (usually faster than me) at answering rules questions.

Your example is exactly correct. And the even better thing about hatchlings is that you can trigger the second ability via other actions/benefits (not just the built-in first ability on that specific dragon).

  17. Where would I go for customer support? My box was missing the purple meeple, a small thing I know, but purple also happens to be my favorite…

    1. We only publish tabletop games, but we’re hoping to license Wyrmspan to Monster Couch, the developer of Wingspan Digital, for a digital version. If they accept, the earliest the game would be available would be mid-2026.

  18. For a few months now, I have been writing reviews and articles for Meeple Mountain. One of the things we offer is Quick Peaks — our hot takes on games we have just been introduced to.

I have just recently been introduced to Wyrmspan — and it is the subject of my portion of the most recent Quick Peaks article: https://www.meeplemountain.com/articles/quick-peaks-february-23-2024/

I like the game. In fact, I have friends coming over this weekend to play a few games of Wyrmspan. But there are some areas where it fell flat for me. See the article for more details.

Who knows, perhaps the expansions will address these issues.

  19. Just got my game and I was so excited! It’s beautiful! But the main issue I’m having is that there are no inserts to organize the cards or everything inside from moving around, there are just little bags. Are you going to offer an insert or something of the sort for later purchase?

    1. Paulina: We included some big bags in Wyrmspan to hold the cards. They’re big enough so that they’re flexible storage solutions for those who sleeve and those who don’t sleeve. We also included two containers with lids to hold the eggs and resource tokens.

We don’t know what the future holds for Wyrmspan in terms of components and expansions, so while there is the possibility of us offering something in the future, it wouldn’t be until those future components are more certain.

  20. Meant to write this early but… work, work, work.
Excited about Wyrmspan (really, all Stonemaier games are awesome, ignore the haters, Red Rising is excellent) but was a bit bummed out the coins and wooden resources sold out so quickly! (I was one meeting too late at work for grabbing them I guess)

Anyway, pre-ordered the game, but was curious if you are planning to restock the coins and resources any time soon?
    Thanks!

    1. Indeed, we’re already reprinting them! They’ll be back in stock late this summer, so please sign up for a back-in-stock notification.

  21. I am loving Wyrmspan! Amazing art and aesthetics and I can see a lot of playability options for future games. I have 3 comments/questions:

    1) I received Wyrmspan and played a 4-player game and 2-player game this past weekend. Everyone really enjoyed it. We watched the How to Play video after reading through about half the instructions. The 4-player took 4 hours and 2 about 2 hours. I think we will be speedier now that we’ve played a bit. I am curious what duration you’d expect for 4 and 2 players moving forward?

    2) When we unboxed, there was one package that included automa cards (I think) and 3 dragon cards, which we left out of the main dragon card pile. When we put the game away, my friend mixed those 3 separate cards in with the rest. I am wondering what those 3 cards were, why they were separate, and if I need to find them and re-separate.

    3) I am also a big fan of your digital versions. I know there are plans to digitize Wyrmspan. I have 2 suggestions:
    a) add a “most difficult” AI setting as the current one is not hard enough. b) add a setting (perhaps not allowed for online play?) to allow the software to choose the best end-of-game strategy, assuming you just want to maximize victory points in the last round without introducing randomness (like a decision to draw cards or something like that). I am a maximizer spend too much time trying to figure out the optimal path).

    1. Thanks for playing Wyrmspan!

      1. Most of my games of Wyrmspan have involved teaching at least 1 other person, and the longest a game has gone is 2.5 hours. I expect that to drop to under 2 hours for non-teaching games (at least those where players think about their turns in advance).

      2. Those are normal dragons to be shuffled in with all other cards. Card decks are packaged based on the card sheets from which they were printed.

      3. There are hopes that Monster Couch will choose to make Wyrmspan Digital, but no decision has been made yet.

        1. Hi Peter. The Automa team did not track play time during playtesting, so I cannot give you an average. However, against Automa you play a standard 2-player game where Automa’s turns only take seconds. In solo play it all depends on how long you spend contemplating your moves, but my plays are roughly 40 minutes.
          Have fun,
          David

  22. Just got my wyrmspan today and I’m so excited to play. Reading the Dragon fact book makes me wish for a more fleshed out official book. I’d be the first in line for that.

    1. With such a large first printing, I (Jamey) thought that the size of the numbers greatly diminished the meaning of having a numbered first copy (e.g., would having number 85,891 out of 100,000 actually feel special?). We plan to still individually number other new games in the future at smaller print run sizes, and perhaps if we have another huge first printing someday we’ll at least put “first printing” on the box to celebrate those who were here with us to get the product off the ground.

You can find answers to this and more in the FAQ if you’re curious. :) https://stonemaiergames.com/games/wyrmspan/rules-faq/

  23. Friends and I played Wyrmspan twice this past weekend and absolutely loved it! The dragon guilds, cave excavations, and coin-based turns add new layers of gameplay that are really interesting compared to Wingspan. The dragon facts are fun, the artwork is gorgeous, and we were blown away by the fact that all the cave card artwork matches if you put them in numerical order, giving a stunning multi-colored panorama. That was a discovery that had us so excited to lay them out after the game and see how they looked. The upgraded resources were also great; the metal coins in particular have a fantastic feel and sound to them. Congrats on launching another excellent game! I foresee my friends and I coming back to this many times in the future.

    1. Thanks for playing a few times already! I’m glad you’re having fun with it, and you’re keen to notice that about the cave art. :)

  24. Hi your probably getting alot of these but for uk/Europe how much time would you expect us to wait before chasing absent shipping notifications?

The delivery method for my order was champion/free if that alters the eta at all.
This isn’t a complaint, I was just curious.

    1. Thanks for your order, Chris. Here’s the update we sent on Monday to you and all others who haven’t received their orders yet (it’s probably in your spam folder–I confirmed that your email is on the list): http://tinyurl.com/5fykpz32

If you’re a Champion and haven’t received a shipping notification by the end of next week, please let us know.

  25. Quite disappointed with the luck of a high quality organizer in the box like I’ve come accustomed to from Stonemaier. First world problem that I’ll just have to solve by spending more money but my expectations during unboxing were let down.

    1. We included 2 containers with lids in Wyrmspan (along with plastic bags for cards) instead of an insert–the containers hold components that would otherwise roll around on the table or be cumbersome to setup/cleanup. As for why there isn’t a card tray, we’ve left the game flexible for those who have different preferences in terms of how they sleeve or store their cards. Also, without a tray, there’s flexible space in the box for expansions if we choose to make them someday.

We understand that people are accustomed to Wingspan including a card tray, but Wingspan’s card tray has actually been the source of many different types of customer frustrations over the years (it was too much plastic for some, but for others it was too cheap-looking when we spent more to change it from plastic to sugarcane pulp; it’s designed to hold sleeved cards but it doesn’t actually satisfy everyone who sleeves cards). It would seem that it’s a lose-lose situation: People are disappointed if we include a card tray or if we don’t include a card tray, so we went with the option that added less plastic to the world, especially since there will surely be independent third-party solutions for those who want them. Conversely, the large bags we include in Wyrmspan are versatile and multi-purpose; plus, you have to shuffle the cards during setup either way. Also, included in the Wyrmspan is a card mat (for dragon and cave cards); this removes the need for the card tray lid found in Wingspan.

    1. I’m really sorry to hear that, Mark! I’m assuming you also contacted our customer service with a more secure address for a reshipment so we can help you in ways we can’t help on a public forum?

      1. Thank you Jamey.
        I have emailed.
Totally understand that this has nothing to do with the Stonemaier team.

        Regards,
        Mark

  26. My four boardgame friends and I played out first game last sunday. We were all very excited and had a great time! The game progression balance felt really good once you got used to the turn mechanics. Two of us filled our tableau out with dragons as well, something that I have only seen happen once in wingspan, so we were pretty chuffed. I loved the artwork and the dragon facts were highly entertaining!
The myriad of ways you could build your 3 explore engines was a great brain puzzle task too.
We had one question though, when an “on-play” ability allows first yourself (who played the card) to gain 1 to 2 of either of the card types, then the rest of the players can take 1 card too, we made the assumption that the card display was refreshed after every player made their selection. Is this action correct?

    1. Thanks for playing! You only ever refresh the card display at the end of a turn. So for the type of ability you describe, there will be some empty spaces on the card display board. Unless otherwise indicated, you can always draw from the top of the deck instead.

  27. O how wonderful does this game look! I just can’t wait to get my hands on a copy once it’s available in our country. I’ll have have to keep myself busy with Wingspan while I’m waiting. Well done for bringing out this game, it looks great!

  28. So in the game where at the end of your turn it says you can have a max of 9 coins, is that counting coins you’ve already played?
Example: I had 8 coins at the start of the third round, my first action was to play a dragon, that dragon gave me 2 additional coins when played. Would I have only been able to get 1 of those, since that would have been my 9th total coin; or would I have gotten to keep both, since I had 7 in my hand yet to play, giving my hand 9 coins?

    1. Just like resources and cards, the coin limit is only looking at unspent coins in your supply (spent coins are only on your mat to ensure you pay the correct cost for explore actions; those coins clear at end of round).

        1. If you start your turn with 8 coins, you spend 1 coin on your turn and you gain 2 coins, that puts you at 9 total coins at the end of your turn, which does not cause you to discard any coins.

          1. Thanks Jamey, we’re huge fans of Stonemaier, and Wyrmspan has been awesome!

Side note, are you going to be at Origins in Columbus, OH in June?

  29. So, there is zero storage structure for this game, I was at least expecting a similar storage ideology to wingspan that at least has somewhere to put the fantastic dragon cards. Jamie, I’m a bit curious if this was a cost consideration or what because it’s a bit disappointing when you had a system nailed for wingspan that worked beautifully for boxing this game up

    1. Sure, check out this question and answer in the FAQ; it is not true that there is zero storage structure in Wyrmspan.

What storage solutions are provided in Wyrmspan?

    1. 57x87mm is a common sleeve size (it’s the same card size as Wingspan); most sleeve makers have them. If you’re looking for the square 57x57mm sleeves, I’ve heard that Mayday may have them; if not, you can cut 57x87mm sleeves down to 57x57mm.

  30. The rulebook’s back flap includes a recommended link for those interested in watching a “how-to-play” video, but the link goes to a “how-to-play” for viticulture, not wingspan. Just a heads up to the good folks @ Stonemaier.

  31. I’ve now played both of Connie Vogelmann’s games, and they are great. She knows how to design a fun game. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for her future designs 🙂

  32. I just received my order of Wyrmspan, and I’m thrilled to begin playing. I’m not normally one to complain. However, I have ordered the last 3 launch games (Expeditions, Apiary and now Wyrmspan), and the exclusion of a game organizer with the launch of Wyrmspan is incredibly disappointing. I mean, at least a card organizer, i.e. base Wingspan would have been appreciated. The way this stands now, the cards are going to be all over the box, let alone other components of the game. I know there are extra bags, but the packaging of Expeditions and Apiary were high quality and what has come to be expected from Stonemaier. I’m not mad, just bummed.

    1. “The way this stands now, the cards are going to be all over the box, let alone other components of the game.”

Just a quick clarification about this: We included a few big bags to hold the cards, along with two trays with lids to hold the the eggs and resources. None of those components will be “all over the box.”

      From the FAQ:

What storage solutions are provided in Wyrmspan?

We included 2 trays with lids in Wyrmspan (along with plastic bags for cards) instead of an insert–the trays hold components that would otherwise roll around on the table or be cumbersome to setup/cleanup. As for why there isn’t a card tray/insert, we’ve left the game flexible for those who have different preferences in terms of how they sleeve or store their cards, and it also means there’s a flexible space in the box for expansions if we choose to make them someday.

  33. Ordered at launch. Looking forward to getting the game. Do you know when it will ship. Located in the east coast US and a Champion member. Thank you.

    1. Thanks for your order! Champion orders will all most likely ship out by the end of February (our fulfillment center has a LOT of orders to fulfill), followed by non-Champion orders in March. You will receive a tracking notification when your order ships. You can subscribe to general updates here: http://eepurl.com/iEYmAw

  34. I said I was done buying games… Then not even two days later this game is shown to me.

You did this on purpose. 😁

    1. No, not even close. There are another 10,000+ Champion orders to ship in the US before we get to non-Champion orders. You should receive your tracking notification in early March.

    1. In Europe, the freight shipment will arrive at the end of this week, and Champion shipments will be sent in the second half of February, followed by non-Champion orders in March.

      1. Hi I was just wondering whether you know whether the freight shipments had arrived at the distribution center OK? (for uk/Europe)

        1. They’re due to arrive over the weekend and be processed early next week. We’re still on track for the estimate: Champion shipout begins next week and will probably take 2 weeks, followed by non-Champion orders.

  35. When watching the Dized tutorial, I noticed that while talking about players go in a clockwise order, their graphics show counter-clockwise. I reported it to them.

    1. Retailers are allowed to sell the game now; they’re just not allowed to provide the game for customers until March 29.

  36. Any news on your shipment arriving to distribution centers in Europe? Last I heard was it was delayed by a week.

    1. There’s no delay or change in the original status of the freight shipment arriving late next week. When your order ships I’m February or March, you’ll get a tracking number.

  37. Played our first 3 player game last night with my wife and 9 year old son. Had a lot of fun, my wife and I tied for points but I won the tie breaker. Next time we will try 4 player with our daughter as well.

  38. Hi, I was wondering about the Dutch translation of the game. It seems that the excavation area’s are translated as follows:

    Carmine Cavern – Karmijnhol
    Golden Grotto – Gouden Spelonk
    Amethyst Abyss – Amethystkloof

And I don’t know why? The English term are obviously purposefully chosen beautiful alliterations, the kind of detail that adds mystical, fantasy atmosphere to the game. The Dutch versions? Not so much. ‘Hol’ is rather crude (not really rude, but crude enough to elicit a dirty grin from most teenagers ;), ‘spelonk’ is technically correct but an little bit an archaic expression from biblical times. ‘Amthystkloof’ is fine, but not really inspiring. Why not options like these:

    Karmijnen Krypt
    Karmozijn Krater
    Karmozijn Kloof
    Gouden Grot
    Gouden Groeve
    Amethysten Afgrond

Depending on whether the theme is colour or gemstone, you’d also have options like Schitterende Spelonk, Robijnen Ravijn, Diamanten Diepte etcetera.

Maybe for another game or the next version a comparable leven of detail could be done also for the translation? I mean, I’m by no means a poet, just a native speaker. And yeah, I could just buy the English version, but I’d love to play with my kids and they aren’t fluent enough in English by virtue of being in primary and middle school.

  39. Shoutout to your Canadian warehouse/fulfillment team — already received my Wyrmspan order! Outstanding turnaround!

  40. The artwork for these dragons is truly exceptional. Where did you find the artist? Was she recommended or were you already aware of her? The imagination to create so many different dragons blows my mind. Also, who came up with the dragon facts for the book?

    1. I first saw Clementine’s take on some classic superheroes somewhere online 7 or 8 years ago, and I made a note that I wanted to work with her someday. Connie wrote the dragon facts. :)

  41. Hi Jamey, would you mind sharing how many Upgraded Components you had that sold out early yesterday on launch day?

I did go elsewhere to purchase everything, but was bummed because I had Champion and other purchase plans, but never expected the components to be sold out on day one.

And thank you, I always appreciate your transparency :)

    1. I’ve been looking and can only find Swan 57 x 57 sleeves but sadly costs a lot of money to get them in the UK. Readily available in the USA.

        1. Mayday and sleeve kings don’t do that size. Closest is 70×70 but I think those who want them can just cut the sleeves to size.

          1. Interesting. I thought someone had mentioned that Mayday offers 57x57mm and 60x60mm sleeves. Perhaps I misunderstood.

    1. Nevermind. Dave already helped me out.

Very impressed with the team and the customer service. Thanks for all you guys do.

    1. Hi everyone! So excited for this!!! I’m a fan from Argentina, and I’d like to know when the worldwide shipping is going to be available. Congratulations and thanks in advance!

      1. All of our shipping options are those that are currently available. For shipping from our US store, we recommend using a forwarding address in the US.

  42. I was gonna order Wyrmspan today but I realized that you printed plenty of copies so I’m sure I can wait for my FLGS to stock it. I can’t afford the ($17) shipping …even with a Champion subscription I will still save 5 bucks. I’m really itching to play but I can wait. Not a complaint, btw.

    1. “February/March: Initial orders ship to customers from fulfillment centers in the US, Canada, Europe, and Australia. Champion shipments in each region will ship first, followed by all others until everything has shipped.
March 29, 2024: worldwide retail release”

  43. Hey! When will this be on the Europe store to buy? I can’t see any mention of it anywhere, not even if I search for it

    1. Based on Jamey’s reply to another question, it looks like about 1.5 hours from when you posted! I know there is some slight confusion for people, as the webstore for the Australia region opens slightly earlier than the others, to prevent people in that region from having to wake up in the middle of the night.

        1. Good morning,
a question if I order from the Europe store and I am French, will my version be in French or English?

  44. Hi, if I become a Stonemaier Champion, how much additional discount will be placed on the already visible launch price?

  45. Is there a discount code for Australians. For people who have subscribed to the mailing list. We haven’t recieved a email today?

  46. Hi do you know how many rubber mats, sets of dice and tokens would need to be added to basket to upgrade everything in the box on a 1 to 1 ratio?

    1. It’s a 5-player game, so you would need 5 mats. One upgrade pack will upgrade the cardboard coins and tokens. There are no dice.

      1. Thank you for your response 😄
I have no idea why I typed dice when I thought I typed coins 😂

The game looks really good. I hope it’ll prove to be just as popular as wingspan.

  47. Waiting, patiently here in Australia! Good Morning ! take my money !!!! Oh wait 9pm tonight….. 11 hours and ten minutes to GO !

  48. This might be a silly question but is there any chance I could get my copy earlier than March 29, if I were to go to St Louis to pick it up? I am HYPED and every time I look at the cards, I get all Veruca Salt about it.

    1. Thanks Sun! We have a local pickup option on our webstore (pick up from our fulfillment partner, Miniature Market in Cave Springs, just outside St. Louis). Local pickup orders should be available within a week or so of January 31.

Also, just to clarity, all webstore orders will be shipped before March 29–that’s the retail release date. Our fulfillment centers will start shipping orders in early February.

      1. Oh! 11am I’ll have an office meeting… I’d have to secretly order online under the conference table… (^_<)

    1. Hi Jamey!
What size are the dragon coins? I think I want extras when ordering to supplement other games as well. Wurmspans coins (and game art especially) look amazing!
      Best regards
      Andreas

  49. I was able to play Wyrmspan over the weekend at Whose Turn Is It Anyway? I loved it. The art is beautiful (I bought some already from the artist) and I’m ready for the pre-order on 31Jan. Much appreciation to Jake (from Guildhall) and Josh for bringing their advanced copies, and Josh for including the upgrades in his.

I expect this to be another big hit for Stonemaier!

    1. Thanks so much, April! I’m glad you enjoyed your first play of Wyrmspan, and I hope many more are to follow. :)

      1. I read a little more about your announcement day (and negative comments when comparing Wyrmspan to Wingspan).

I will admit my first thought on seeing it wasn’t positive. I love Wingspan, and hated the idea of a ‘knock-off’ of one of my favorite games. I was convinced to play it (and played it multiple times in four days), and clearly you can see from my above comment, I loved it! It’s definitely not a ‘knock-off’ or a reskin. It’s a different game, with enough similarities to draw in Wingspan fanatics and enough differences to attract some dedicated Wingspan haters (my husband and step-daughter included).

And definitely there will be many more plays in my future. I’ve even convinced my husband to play it with me 2-player, and he doesn’t play against me often. I’m hoping my copy will arrive before I leave for Atlanta Game Fest in late February. :)

  50. When pre ordering can you order other Stonemier game titles at the same time or would it be better to order them seperatly?

    1. Definitely! Everything listed on our webstores is available at your region’s fulfillment center and can be shipped together to save on shipping costs. :)

  51. How will i be able to purchase this game? Sorry if a silly question. My wife and i are pretty new to gaming and both exited about this one.
    Thank you

  52. Quick question: the eggs in Wyrmspan will be plastic or made out of wood (like newer Wingspan eggs)? And they’ll be the same material for non-english versions?

        1. You know, I’m not sure what the language is in this world, but dragons are the birds of this world–they don’t speak a human language.

    1. The cards are 57x87mm and 57x57mm, so they should fit into sleeved designed for those cards sizes. Thanks!

    2. I just posted this on a comment the other day, but on the sleeves for the square cards, Swan Sleeves makes a 57x57mm and 60x60mm. I got a pack of each in anticipation for the release. Not sure which will fit best.

  53. Is it correct that Wyrmspan will come without an insert ? Are you planning something for that in the future or should we look for alternative solutions? If that is case, are you cooperating currently with any of the third party producers for inserts (like Folded Space or e-Raptor) ?

    1. Wyrmspan comes with 2 plastic containers with lids to hold food tokens and eggs, along with plastic bags to hold cards. No insert, and we currently have no future plans for Wyrmspan (other than reprints of the game if it sells well). It’s quite possible that third-party accessory companies will make a custom insert, but that’s for them to do completely independently of us if they wish.

  54. Ok, I can do this…5 days to go…each morning I’m one day closer to the Wyrmspan launch…I’m so excited. 😄

  55. Hi Jamey!
I was wondering (and I apologize if this is too early) if you were considering s GeekUp Bit set for the Wyrmspan food tokens? Thank you for your time,a 😊

    1. Hi Nick! We have no connection to third-party accessory creators; as long as they follow our guidelines, they’re welcome to make bits and pieces. :)

  56. Greetings and Salutations
What time (with time zone) does the Jan 31st order become available in Australia? So I can set my alarm clock.
    Thank you.
    Cheryl

    1. Because you’re so far ahead of us in St Louis, it will launch in the late evening Sydney time, around 9:30 at night on your January 31.

      1. No 3 am alarm. That’s brilliant. Thank you for your kindness. ❤️
I can order it after I feed the brush tail possum and the Woylie. 👍

  57. Hi Jamey. When this was announced I have to admit it did not peak my interest. I watched a couple of reviews last night and now I’m all in! I do have a couple of questions that you may have already answered in the comments.

Will the box fit sleeved cards? Does this include the cave cards (if you can get sleeves to fit them). Are the cave cards the same thickness as the dragon cards?

You mentioned on a recent YouTube video that you had been working on a big project for a couple of years, is this that big project? Also, do you plan a similar release schedule for future content line you have done with wingspan or do you just see this as an entirely standalone project, no expansions?

I also watched your design diary and wanted to thank you for doing your best to make your games as eco friendly as possible.

    1. The only organizational components in the box are two lidded plastic containers (for resources and eggs) and plastic bags (for cards). So yes, it fits sleeved cards, and all cards are made from the same cardstock.

All of our projects are big. :)

We don’t have a future plan for Wyrmspan. We’re very excited about it, but we’re taking it one day at a time–we’ll talk about that internally after the release.

      Thanks for your questions!

      1. I just saw your video with Alex that answered a few of my questions. Great interview. Looking forward to an unboxing video too. I’ll be on the webstore on the 31st ready to order everything. Thanks Jamey.

        1. My friends and I love Wingspan! Can’t wait to order Wyrmspan. When we found out there was a companion app for Wingspan to hear the bird noises, we lost our minds! Any idea if something like that is in the works foe Wyrmspan??

          1. We like the Wingspan app too, though it’s unrelated to Stonemaier Games. Perhaps someone will make an unofficial dragon-sound app for Wyrmspan!

    2. On the sleeves for the square cards, Swan Sleeves makes a 57x57mm and 60x60mm. I got a pack of each in anticipation for the release. Not sure which will fit best.

  58. Can’t wait for this launch! Was wondering if all the dragons will be SM originals, or if there will be depictions of famous or literary dragons such as Smaug or Toothless (just to name a few…)?

        1. The exact price will go live on our webstore next week (they’re still subject to change, hence why we don’t reveal them in advance); for now, see comparable products on our webstore for price estimates.

  59. I am beyond excited to see this game come out. I love dragons and playing Wingspan, so the too together is a dream come true for me!!!! Thanks for making this a reality.

  60. Can you add some clarity regarding playmat storage? Will the rubber mats fit in the box? If so, is that instead of, or in addition to the standard mats? I am hoping they will fit in the box, especially since there is no need for a dice tower.

    1. In terms of their height, they are designed to fit into the box. Beyond that, it depends on how many you have and how you store them (folded or rolled up); there will be some box lift after around 2 playmats.

  61. You need to have Monster Couch advertise this on Steam and whatever other platforms its on. I plan to purchase the physical game. I would have seen a notification on Steam, but a friend had to notify me. It feels like a cheap way to advertise and advertisements can mean sales.

  62. Is there going to be a decent amount of copies available on launch (Jan 31st) or should I set an alarm for the morning? I think my heart would break if I miss out lol. My game group loves wingspan but we are all obsessed with dragons and we are dying to have this added to our selection ASAP! Btw I am a huge advocate for all of the games I have played by Stonemaier. I have a new goal to eventually have the entire Stonemaier collection.. keep doing what you are doing, your games are stunning in every way.

    1. We’ve allocated around 20,000 copies for our webstore and around 80,000 for retailers, so we’re hoping that covers demand for a while. :)

  63. Hello, I would like to know if this game will be released in French. I really hope so. too excited to play it

  64. I like the play of Wingspan, but the bird theme always fell short for me. But a revised version with dragons seems perfect to me.

  65. I’m very excited, wingspan is much loved at our weekly table but its owed by two members of our group already. I absolutely love Dragons and the art for Wyrmspan looks incredible. this game is definitely joining my collection

  66. how many wooden token/metal coin upgrade packs will it take to full substitute/replace the equivalent pieces in the base game?(such as how it’ll take 5 rubber mats to replace/supplement the main boards or in wingspan it takes multiple golden egg orders to fully replace the regular eggs).

  67. I confess I was more inclined to ignore Wyrmspan. To be honest, it seems to present itself as derivative of the excellent Wingspan. But I am now much more interested, for two reasons:

1 – It is a rare instance of a game created by a team of women in the main creative positions: designer and artist. I have been trying to include games in my collection by more diverse creative teams.

2 – I have been trying to focus my collection on games that have a clear message (eg., Bloc by Bloc, Freedom), have grounds on good research (Pax Pamir 2nd edition, Wingspan), and games with an artistic appeal from its art and/or graphical design (Scythe, The Gallerist).

I read Clementine’s designer diary and boy she sold the game to me. I love watercolor, and the thought process behind the card creation left me filled with awe.

I am still not sure on whether I’ll get Wyrmspan, but I definitely wish you guys a lot of succes.

    1. Thanks Alberto! I appreciate you digging deeper into the game to make an informed purchase (or not, either way! :) ).

    1. They will each have their own listing on our webstore. You can add them to an order or buy just those components.

  68. Are the dragon cards all original creations? Or were any of them inspired by Lord of the Rings, Skyrim, Eragon, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, etc? Will there be a diary entry/YouTube video that dives deeper into some of the cards?

    1. All original creations. That would have been awesome, but I imagine the licensing for something like that would be incredibly costly if not impossible to achieve.

      From the FAQ page:

Will my favorite fictional dragon appear in Wyrmspan?

We love that you love dragons, and I hope you share them with us! But no, Wyrmspan is its own world, so while Clementine and Connie were inspired by dragons from cultures, mythologies, and lore from our world, famous fictional dragons don’t appear in Wyrmspan.

  69. So excited for this, I’ve got wingspan with a couple of expansions! Will there be an online version of wyrmspan as well?

    1. We’re hoping that Wingspan Digital developer Monster Couch will make a digital version of Wyrmspan, and in a few years we’re hoping to have a Board Game Arena implementation too. Wyrmspan will also be on Tabletopia in a few months.

    1. Indeed, Stonemaier Champions always get a 20% discount on their entire order, and their orders are shipped before non-Champion orders.

  70. Are any other distributors like AGD, PHD or ACD, going to be carrying the game as well, or is it available only through this website?

  71. I love wingspan and have 2 expansions. Is this going to have multiple expansions or will this be a one off game? I would like this to be the latter since it is a bit more complex. The one issue I have with Wingspan is there are so many birds which is good and bad. Good because of the variety in gameplay and bad due to the shuffling time and not getting consistency in card play. I’m one who likes getting the ravens and with all the expansions, certain cards don’t come up as often.
    Thanks

    1. You can see all projects we have in the works on this chart (there’s no Wyrmspan expansion on it): https://stonemaiergames.com/e-newsletter/

There are currently no Wyrmspan expansions in the works or planned. We’ll wait to see how the public response is before internally discussing the future of the game.

One of the fun challenges in Wingspan is finding the best way to use each bird–have fun! :)

  72. I am BEYOND excited for this. Will buy on release. Hope this means we might get even more Wingspan spinoff games in the future – one based on aviation would be outstanding too! (could have the rows be General Aviation, Military, Commercial)

  73. Just to be sure: you mention retail release and for the Netherlands it is 999 Games. It says ‘dutch’ does this mean they only release a Dutch version? So if I want the English version I schuld order with you and of the month instead of waiting for 999 Games to sell the game? Thanks! Aniek

    1. 999 Games will sell the Dutch version of Wyrmspan; Stonemaier Games will sell the English version. If you want the English version, you can buy it on our webstore starting on January 31 (or from retailers who choose to carry the game in late March).

    1. The eggs are the same size and composition as in Wingspan, but all of the colors are different, and all Wyrmspan eggs are speckled (7 different color combinations selected specifically for dragons).

    1. Here’s what we say on the above page:

      Estimated Schedule
January 3: announcement and beginning of design diaries (subscribe to updates)
January 22: first day for reviewers and content creators to share their thoughts on the game
January 31: product launch on the Stonemaier webstore (followed by shipping throughout February)
      late March: worldwide retail release

    1. Yes, this is noted on the above page: “Natural rubber playmats and metal coin/wooden resource upgrade packs will be available on our webstore on launch day (January 31) as optional add-ons, along with a promo realm for Rolling Realms and a custom disc golf disc.”

    1. Hi

Me and my wife are so looking forward to this new game to add to our collection. Can you tell us if a deluxe version be available.

Can you also tell me if this will be made available sooner to Champion’s.

      Thanks 😊

      1. Thanks! I think you’ll find some helpful information on this page (the same page where you’re commenting), where we say, “Natural rubber playmats and metal coin/wooden resource upgrade packs will be available on our webstore on launch day (January 31) as optional add-ons, along with a promo realm for Rolling Realms and a custom disc golf disc.”

  74. I love Wingspan, one of the best things about is I can play it with almost everyone and everyone loves it, too! Wyrmspan is a guaranteed purchase (and I say this in the awareness that I pledged to only buy 5 new board games this year (down from 30+)), it’s not only the theme, but also HOW you implemented the theme with the gorgeous art and clever mechanical twists. Everything about this game makes me want it.
I will get the German localization, though, a few months later.
    Greetings,
    Alex

  75. To the best of your knowledge, do you think Wyrmspan will run a similar number of expansions as Wingspan, and eventually a big (nesting) box?

    1. That’s a fair question, and I’ll answer honestly: To the best of the knowledge I have about Wyrmspan, we currently have nothing else for the game in the works, but I could see that changing if the game brings joy to a lot of people and those people want more dragons, cave cards, guilds, and objectives. Ideally, though, we’ll manage to fit anything else we release–if that happens–into the original game box.

      1. This is what i was wondering about, thank you for the clarification! If there are expansions i hope they’ll fit into the same box, i love wingspan but hated that everything was scattered till the nesting box and even that doesn’t feel like a good solution to it.

        1. Champion orders will indeed ship before non-Champion orders, but Wyrmspan goes live on our webstore for everyone on January 31 (we can’t limit who does or doesn’t see a product once it’s live on our webstore).

      2. You can never have too many dragons! I’m already dreaming up expansion titles: Scales and Tails, Fire and Frost, Sand and Sea.

    1. We’ve already made the first print run of everything, so the quantities are finite. We made a lot, though (100,000 copies of the game), but if we run out, we’ll make more.

  76. Found out about this after watching ShelfCutter’s latest video and to see that it’s actually just about to be released is fantastic. It seems such an obvious direction to go in (now that someone’s had the idea) :) This is going to be a huge game for you guys – good luck with it.

  77. Can’t wait for this have probably played wingspan over 200 times this last year. Looking forward to a first release

    1. That’s awesome! Thanks for diving so deep into Wingspan, and I hope you’ll enjoy Wyrmspan too. :)

  78. I own a lot of SM games, and I am always impressed with the quality and customer service—amazing company! Do we know an approximate time this will be launched on Jan 31? Thanks for all you do, and Happy New Year!!

  79. What’s the age range for this game? My 11 year old board game fan is crazy about dragons, wyrms, drakes and wyverns.

    1. We’re putting 14+ on the box, but younger board game fans should have no problem playing and enjoying Wyrmspan. :)

      1. Sounds like a good blog article. Ages on boxes Vs ages that can play and enjoy and why they’re different.

    2. my daughter is 12 but LOVES Wingspan and dragons so I’m planning to buy this game for her. 1) She already knows Wingspan. The similarities will help and 2) It’s dragons. We’ll find a way to make it work.

  80. As an avid lover of Wingspan, I am beyond excited to see this new concept come out! I love anything and everything dragon related, so I cannot wait to play this!

    1. So far, we’ve only focused on creating this game. There are no expansions planned or in the works–we have not looked into the future yet.

    1. Indeed, there are many types of dragons in Wyrmspan, including wyverns, wyrms, drakes, river dragons, and others. They are inspired by culture, mythology, and lore from around the world.

  81. What are the odds this new father who also happens to be a broke graduate student and board game enthusiast might be shipped a copy of this game for free as a belated Christmas present? Much love to the game devs and Stonemaier team for yet another excellent publication!

  82. Thank you guys so much for the awesome work ya’ll put in! I did have ine question: Is there a point in the foreseeable future that this would be available on steam?

  83. I just wanted to say that this being designed by Connie Vogelmann and developed by Elizabeth Hargrave is great.

Wingspan was a fantastic design but it wasn’t quite a purchase for me. Apiary is amazing and in my collection (as is the Fox Experiment from Hargrave) so I’m going to grab a copy of this. As a simple retheme I wouldn’t get Wyrmspan, but with those two working on a second take on the design, I’m sold.

    1. Thanks Nate! I appreciate your kind words for both of these incredible designers. I feel very lucky to work with them.

    1. We hope to work with Wingspan Digital developer Monster Couch in the future to create a digital version of Wyrmspan. :)

  84. I live in Brazil, on January 31st will I be able to buy the game on your website in the Brazilian Portuguese version and receive it here in Brazil through your partner Grok or will I have to wait for them to announce the launch here? If I have to wait for the official launch here in Brazil, will it be the same retail version or will there be exclusive premium components on your website on January 31st?

    1. There’s only one version of Wyrmspan; the rubber playmat and metal coin/wooden resource pack are add-ons. As for specific questions about how and when Grok will release the game, please ask Grok–that’s their inforamtion to share.

        1. There will be, though I don’t want to confuse people by mixing them in with the other photos on the main Wyrmspan page.

          1. Thanks. Will you have pics posted soon as an add-on before Jan 31st? I’m very curious on what the add-ons will look like.

          2. I will! I have it planned for a design diary post, and then of course the photos will be on the webstore on January 31 too.

  85. mmm… no dice on the component list :( just an awesome re-theme would have been fine, Wingspan gets a CRAZY amount of stink eyes just because: birds?!?
Appreciate the effort of adding something new and trying to elevate the game but just hope it won’t backfire, because in my opinion the only thing that needed fixing on Wingspan was the theme. Best of luck.

    1. Correct, as noted in the FAQ: “No dice (you’re either always gaining a specific resource or your choice of the 4 resources). The food dice are often a nice element of variability and player interaction in Wingspan, but we found it just a little too frustrating in Wyrmspan if all resources weren’t consistently available.”

    2. You are, of course, entitled to your opinion. But I think birds was a great theme! I have loved reading the information on every card. Great stuff.

      1. Totally agree, my husband and I are 27 and 30 (so young) and we’ve been into birds for a couple of years; solely because of Wingspan.

      2. @Jamey understood, thank you for your time.

@K. David It isn’t so much my opinion but the looks on peoples faces when I mention birds while trying to briefly explain what the game is like, then I have to go: trust me lets sit down and play. That kinda pushed me away from suggesting it more.
My choice of words could have been better, “fixing” is way too harsh. Let’s just say it’s a fenomenal game that may be slightly tied down by the theme because it caters to a smaller audience. And if you happen to be on that audiance or become part of it because of the game, great! You got the best of both worlds.

  86. Are WE able to know in witch langage the game will be available ?
For example, I am French, but such a game would be nice to offer to my friends whom love the WINGSPAN game. But some of them don’t speak English.
So I am asking : Will it be a French version of the game available in march ?

    1. As for the specific release dates for each localized version of Wyrmspan, that’s information for that partner to reveal when they’re ready. As for who the partners are, they’re listed on the above page:

“Localization Partners: There are 11 localization partners for this game, including Grok Games (Portuguese – Brazil), Surfin’ Meeple (Chinese), Mindok (Czech), Matagot (French), Feuerland (German), Ghenos (Italian), 999 Games (Dutch), Divercentro (Portuguese), Troy Games (Turkish), and Maldito (Spanish). These partners will announce their participation and other details at their discretion.”

    1. Wingspan Asia just came out a year ago, and Wingspan expansions typically release every two years. Elizabeth is actively working on the next expansion. :)

      1. Really? it feels like Wingspan Asia has been out longer than that somehow! My daughter asked for and got it for her birthday (Grandparents have Wingspan that we play there but she wanted a version to have at home). But–she’s loved Dragons since she got some stuffed ones at 4 years old and so my hardest decision will be to decide whether to wait for her birthday in AUGUST to gift this one or find a way to sneak it in before then. — and we would have gotten it even if just a simple reskin. I LOVE the dice/dice tower in Wingspan. But I love the differences you describe Wyrmspan and they do feel very thematic. My daughter is going to have an entire nursery of hatchlings I can see. We may even need to house rule having separate hatchling and dragon card piles so she can choose to explicitly draw hatchling cards if wanted.

  87. is it a typo or are the cave cards smaller than all the other card types from both wyrmspan and wingspan. want to order my sleeves for the game ahead of time.

    1. I would like to thank you for making my birthday shopping for the wife easier. Our body is ready for dragons and laying eggs. May this be a great success for future expansions <3

  88. Hello, I couldn’t find in this article where the game will be made, if it is in EU or outside of it, especially china. Can you tell me ? Thank you

    1. Wyrmspan has already been made, and it was manufactured by a Canadian company that primarily uses factories in China. Our webstore orders will ship to customers from fulfillment centers in the US, Canada, Europe, and Australia.

      1. Thank you for the quick answer, so fast i didn’t see it :)
For personal reasons games made in China are a big drawback to me so i may sit this one out. I know that there are very good reasons to make games in China but to me there are also very good reasons not to buy them when it’s the case. I hope there are more ways in the future to get games made in EU or worst case, USA/Canada.
This game promises to be really good and that’s a shame :/
        Thank you for your time

        1. I appreciate you standing up for what you believe in! For me, I’m far, far more interested in companies than I am countries (in most cases). For example, Panda treats its employees and its clients really well. That’s more important to me than the nationality of Panda’s employees or where they’re located; after all, there are plenty of businesses in the US, Canada, and EU that don’t treat their employees well. Plus, even though everyone has the right to judge other countries for their shortcomings, it isn’t as if any of our own governments are innocent either. There is no perfect person, company, or country. I’m proud to work with Panda–a Canadian company with employees around the world–and that isn’t at all a shame to me.

  89. Super excited for this! Wingspan is my family’s favorite game and we play every time we get together.

Any idea how quickly shipping will start in February? My brother is coming to visit from out of state in mid-February, and I’d love to gift this to him. Really hoping he doesn’t find out about this before then and I can surprise him.

    1. Tom: Fulfillment for Stonemaier Champions will begin right away and will take a few weeks (we expect quite a few orders), followed by non-Champion orders. We can’t guarantee any specific delivery times, just that the games will be in stock before we start accepting orders and that shipments will go out as fast as our fulfillment center can ship them.

  90. We love Wingspan, but our Eldest’s partner has a severe aversion to birds in any form, so we can’t bring out Wingspan for gaming with him.

Dragons on the other hand “Winner Winner Chicken Dinner” we’re in on release

    1. Adding to the above comment that we know this isn’t exactly the same as Wingspan, but we own Apiary, Scythe, Red Rising, and Viticulture as well as having played Tapestry, and between Two Cities, all from the Stonemaier group of games that we enjoy, so yer, we’re in.

    1. Here’s what we say on the page above: “Natural rubber playmats and metal coin/wooden resource upgrade packs will be available on our webstore on launch day (January 31) as optional add-ons, along with a promo realm for Rolling Realms and a custom disc golf disc.”

We’re hoping to work with Monster Couch (the Wingspan Digital developer) on a digital version of Wyrmspan.

  91. You got me all excited when I saw the rulebook link now saying two rulebooks and is now said multiplayer and solo. I thought the solo rulebook had quietly been posted as I was pretty sure that yesterday it just said rulebook.

  92. Thank you for your position not to do translations in ruzzian. Countries like ruzzia that are the cause of genocide of other peoples have no right to the culture of democracy and the west. It still won’t fix them, all they understand is power.

  93. When we would get the Polish version please? Game is not language independent and we got Polish Wingspan so why not this one, please?

  94. Looks great, love the theme and design (as always). I’m a bit cautious about adding extra complexity to the core Wingspan design as I love how simple it is but I’m happy to wait and see how it plays when the previews release.

I am curious though, I know it’s mentioned that it isn’t mechanically compatible with Wingspan but a lot of the components seem similar (eggs and seems to be same size of cards/player boards). So would Wyrmspan fit well into the Nesting Box or would it get in the way of planned Wingspan expansions? Alternatively, is Wyrmspan (or stand-alone Wingspan games like this) something that we might see more of in the future?

    1. The Nesting Box is designed to hold all Wingspan components, but Wyrmspan isn’t a Wingspan component–it’s a separate game (it doesn’t go in the Wingspan Nesting Box).

  95. Pour le jeu en français il faut attendre l’annonce de Matagot? Ou ça sera aussi pour le 31 janvier?

  96. This looks like a super game! Unfortunately, in my imaginary world dragons are not mammals and cannot drink milk (nor can bearded dragons from the real world). It probably won’t take too long for me to turn the milk tokens into potions. Any chance to get a non-milk version of the rulebook?

  97. Stonemeier games make me so happy…this is keeping me awake, trying to see as much as I can! So exciting…

    1. You will! Here’s how we say it on the above page: “Natural rubber playmats and metal coin/wooden resource upgrade packs will be available on our webstore on launch day as optional add-ons, along with a promo realm for Rolling Realms and a custom disc golf disc.”

  98. Do you have any plans to digitize this game in the future? I absolutely love the digital version of Wingspan since it lets me play on my own (with AI) anywhere and I don’t have to go through the hassle of setting it up — I would love to see the same developers (Monster Couch) do a Wyrmspan adaptation!

    1. Me too! We shared the files with Monster Couch a while ago in the hopes they will be our digital partner for Wyrmspan.

  99. I’m literally counting the days – we play Wingspan nightly at home, but DRAGONS? Way to level up; we can’t wait!!

  100. Nice to see that you are including both Eastern and Western styled dragons in the artwork. Now we must wait.

  101. Birds are neat and all, but dragons are awesome! Hopefully, the same can be said about the games :-) I do think Wingspan is neat, so we’re halfway there :-)

  102. Fantastic Piece!
Good to know that there are localized versions…
    uh…mmm?
There will not be a Japanese localized version available? Sad…

    1. That isn’t necessarily true; it’s just that Arclight hasn’t announced it. Feel free to ask them (or tell them you want it)! :)

  103. Congratulations on designing the ONE board game I am willing to purchase before playing the (multiple) unplayed games sitting on my shelf. DRAGONS ARE MY WEAKNESS, second only to birds.

  104. Greetings!
This looks fantastic, my wife and I can’t wait…
I might have missed it though, but do you have a MSRP for this yet?
    Thanks!

    1. Yes, it’s standard for us to offer new products at a discount for a few days upon launch. Also, in addition to that discount, all Champions get a 20% discount.

  105. I love high fantasy so the theme of this is right up my alley but I must admit I’m a little hesitant to dive right in and pre-order this one. I’ll have keep an eye on it as more information and reviews become available before making that call. I’m just worried that it’s going to be a bit too close to wingspan to justify having both in my collection. Especially after I just invested in the nesting box last year and fully plan to buy all the wingspan content as it’s made.

    1. Wingspan is independent of Wyrmspan. Elizabeth is currently working on the next expansion for Wingspan.

  106. Jamey, my wife and I are immensely in love with Wingspan. I am personally a huge fan of anything involving dragons.

You could not possibly announce a game more personally tailored to get me HYPED.

Take my money right now, please I beg you 🙏🏻

  107. Will there be dragon facts/lore on the bottom of each card, like the bird facts on the bottom of each bird in wingspan? I love those

    1. Dragon facts are found in a field-guide style book, not on the cards themselves. We found that by separating this text from the cards, we made the dragon cards more vision-friendly (plus, the 32-page full-color book is a fun addition).

  108. My group and I love Wingspan. We have everything for it, and will continue to get more Wingspan products as long as Stonemaier continues to produce them.

That said… this one is a bit of a head-scratcher to me.

Generally speaking, a base game for Stonemaier is something truly unique. Apiary, for example, was something where just the theme and the concept blew me away; Tapestry remains a gorgeous, unique take on civilization games; Euphoria, Scythe, Viticulture, and so on.

Recently, Stonemaier returned to the Scythe universe; this was odd at first, but I like the interesting and unique look at that setting the game brings.

And now we have a game where the box states that it is a Wingspan game. My gut reaction was that I was not all that interested in a re-skinned version of Wingspan. But I kept reading… This looks unique enough to be its own thing — standing on its own, as it were. I sincerely hope that is right.

Jamey — you are a smart guy. I trust you know what you are doing. And I trust that this is different and interesting enough to be a hit on its own. I mean, I am a fan of your games, your company, and of you — so I will be getting a copy, no doubt.

    Good luck with everything!

    1. You are correct that Wyrmspan is not a reskin of Wingspan, far from it. I’m glad you kept reading. :)

  109. As is so often the case, it’s clearly a no-brainer! Very nice shot the dragon/wingspan crossover, great idea 🥰. Is the gameplay a little more expert, or on the same level as its big sister?

    1. We look forward to working again with our localization partners in Russia after Russia stops invading Ukraine–hopefully that will happen soon.

  110. Will this have player interaction? That’s the only thing missing from wingspan for me. Hoping this fixes that!

    1. Wingspan actually has quite a bit of interaction: The dice you choose from the dice tower (and when you choose to reroll them), the bird cards you choose (if you take a face up card, you’re taking it away from your opponents), the end-of-round goals (when playing on the green side of the goal mat), and quite a few bird cards that result in other players gaining food, drawing cards, etc.

An easy test for player interaction is to ask yourself, “Could all actions be taken simultaneously, scaled to any player count?” If the answer is no, there’s at least some player interaction in the game.

What I think you’re asking for–and what most people seem to mean when they ask for “more player interaction”–is more *direct conflict*. That simply isn’t what Wingspan is about; it is, after all, a game about managing a bird sanctuary. :)

For Wyrmspan, in terms of player interaction, we pursued a similar vibe to Wingspan in that there are reasons to pay attention to other players, but you’re never attacking or intentionally hurting other players. Imagine a world where dragons of all shapes and sizes are just as common as birds—hopefully our first thought wouldn’t be to use them as vehicles of war.

There are still areas of tension in Wyrmspan, though. The special guild benefits are limited, and they scale by player count (one side of the guild tile is for 2-3 player; the other for 4-5 players). The end-of-round goals are always relative to other players (though ties are friendly). There’s also the tension of claiming available cave and dragon cards before an opponent. And Wyrmspan includes my favorite type of interaction—positive player interaction—via a number of dragon and cave cards that benefit all players.

      1. You said a good metric for if a game is interactive is if everybody can take their turn simultaneously then the game isn’t interactive… I think a way more useful metric to measure it is can you leave the table until it’s your turn and then still take the best turn available to you.

This is very much how most games of Wingspan are played. I wasn’t asking to make the dragons battle each other or kill my opponents… I was hoping for something where you can lure dragons away from an opponents board by being more appealing or having more shiny… just something that makes it feel a little more competitively engaging since this isn’t a co-op game and then only card effects that have anything to do with opponents help them out. Rolling the dice to get food just doesn’t scratch the interaction itch I’m looking for.

I’m sorry if my question upset you originally. I own quite a few of your companies games, currently I’m in love with Apiary. Scythe is a games I’ve played probably 30-40 times over the years. I’m always interested when I see your logo and new stuff coming from you guys… I honestly meant no disrespect towards you, was just hoping this would be less of a group solitaire experience than Wingspan is (There is nothing wrong with a game that is designed like Wingspan, and it having very little interaction, it’s just not my favorite style of game and I’m not really excited to play it.. was hoping this would be a different experience since it seems really cool!)

        1. No worries! I get that there are different types of player interaction that people prefer. And you can lure dragons away from other players in Wyrmspan–it’s just that you do so from the dragon display, not after someone has put in the time and effort to play the dragon onto their player mat.

  111. The best news I’ve received today… Great way to start the year knowing that a great board game is coming
Thank you very much for this announcement. I’ll look forward to it when it gets into my hands 💚🐉🐲

  112. Oh wow! I really wanna give this a shot! Absolutely love dragons, and love wingspans mechanic

    1. Here’s what we say on the above page: “Natural rubber playmats and coin/resource upgrade packs will be available on our webstore on launch day as optional add-ons, along with a promo realm for Rolling Realms and a custom disc golf disc.”

  113. Hello!
First off congrats on this new game can’t wait to read the manual! Quick question here will there be different versions regarding the material meaning paper or plastic? I just noticed Amazon is selling both versions for Wingspan.
    Cheers

    1. Ana: There’s just one current version of Wingspan, and it includes sugarcane pulp trays and containers, along with wooden eggs. There’s just one version of Wyrmspan, and it includes mostly cardboard and wood components, along with 2 plastic trays for eggs and resources.

        1. Here’s what we say on the above page: “Natural rubber playmats and metal coin/wooden resource upgrade packs will be available on our webstore on launch day as optional add-ons, along with a promo realm for Rolling Realms and a custom disc golf disc.”

So yes, but only as add-ons.

  114. I wonder, is there a digital version coming in the future, too? With Wingspan, it’s great for when I can’t get more players. This game looks amazing, and I’m sure I’ll end up getting it.

  115. I agree with so many commenters here. No game before has sparked this much immediate excitement for me. I’m so glad you announced this so close to the release date – can’t wait to get this to the table.

  116. Looks beautiful! :)
Are there any simultaneous actions to reduce downtime like in “Earth”? (Which is basically a plant-based Wingspan variant with improved mechanics.) Downtime in Wingspan could be an issue with larger player counts…
I’ll probably buy it anyway, because dragons…. :D

    1. Due to the level of player interaction in Wyrmspan (gaining cave and dragon cards, positive player interaction powers, and the dragon guild), simultaneous play isn’t possible, but we tried to keep turns a bit snappier than in Wingspan.

  117. Years ago, when wingspan was first being teased, someone was guessing it would be dragon themed and that always stuck with me, how amazing it would be with that theme. I’m so excited for this! This is an instant buy for me.

  118. I’ve never been automatically this excited for a board game before, this will be mine as soon as I can possible get it. Thanks for making this!

    1. I think there are general Stonemaier emails, and then there are game-specific updates/emails. I think the Jan 3 email is the former.

  119. I’m gonna stick with my birds <3

But the game store I work at has enough fantasy-geared folks I've literally heard the dragon-Wingspan request before. So this'll be popular

    1. We put 14+ on the box, but if you have some younger but experienced gamers in the house (especially if they know Wingspan), they can play at younger ages.

    1. Matagot will be offering a French version in the future; you can ask them about their launch date.

  120. I cant wait to see the play through and video reviews to see what everyone thinks. I love Wingspan and I think im gonna love Wyrmspan too!!

    1. I also quite enjoy your releasing games with different takes on mechanics – like Between two cities/castles, Scythe/My Little Scythe, the entire concept of Rolling Realms, and now Wingspan/Wyrmspan.

  121. Having an issue signing up for Launch Notification: Recipient “” has too many recent signup requests

    1. Same: “Recipient “” has too many recent signup requests” – though for all I know my email IS in the system and the error is, um, erroneous. Or there is some broader issue. Hope all’s well before long!

  122. I’m torn on this. Dragons + SM seemed like an instant buy for me. The seeming retheme of Wingspan has me worried due to only playing SM games solo and not feeling cards cycle through enough in Wingspan for solo. I hope the Automa has a much different mechanic than Wingspan.
