A Shift in Responsibility at Stonemaier Games – Stonemaier Games

A Shift in Responsibility at Stonemaier Games

I have a confession that I’ve been hesitant to reveal to the Stonemaier Games community, our shareholders, and even my coworkers: For quite some time, I’ve been working two full-time jobs.

It feels good to finally get that off my chest. In addition to the 65 hours a week I spend on Stonemaier Games, I spend the other 103 hours as a personal assistant for a pair of high-powered executives, Biddy and Walter.

I’ve tried to balance and prioritize these jobs, but the time has come for me to step down as the president of Stonemaier Games and focus on the persistent, varied, and often contradictory needs of my bosses. This is effective immediately as of today, April 1, 2021.

Years ago I had to make the difficult decision to quit my secure full-time job to take a risk with Stonemaier Games, the company I co-founded. That was my choice. I’d like to say that today’s decision was up to me, but in truth, Biddy and Walter have mandated that they have my undivided attention 24/7.

My new responsibilities include:

  • chin scratches
  • providing meals
  • belly rubs (even when it’s a trap)
  • moving chairs into sunlight as the sun moves
  • having one-sided conversations
  • chaperoning visits onto the patio
  • providing treats
  • opening cardboard boxes
  • looking at vague things that are important to them but unknown to me
  • head pets
  • providing catnip
  • opening the front door
  • closing the front door
  • tummy time
  • extracting toys from under the couch
  • scooping the litter box
  • hiding from thunder
  • refocusing my Instagram account solely on cat photos
  • running up and down the hallway with a ribbon

What does this change mean for Stonemaier Games? The good news is that the company is in good hands with Joe and Alex, who are also assisted by my co-founder Alan, part-time Automa extraordinaire Morten, and graphic designer Christine. The bad news is that literally all of them also have feline bosses, so it’s quite possible they will all soon encounter similar shifts in priorities.

I’m getting the signal that I need to sign off from this device and provide snacks for Walter and Biddy. I’m forever grateful for the joy we’ve shared through Stonemaier Games. Happy April Fools Day!

  1. I can totally understand your situation. But do take care of your health, and I recommend you try to negotiate more time off from your bosses. Biddy appears the most approachable! :)

  2. I like the logo redesign, but it feels like the company should be renamed “Stonemeower” as well. ;) Best of luck Jamey!

  3. Hahaha! Brilliant!! My high pawed executives are Gandalf the Grey and Isildur :) I can relate to everything you listed but with the nuance that I simply have to open anything they are on the opposite side of, be it windows or doors and I swear that they even teleport sometimes when I am sure they were put out in the garden at night, they find themselves indoors in the morning by their food bowl !

  4. If I’m doing the math right here, you spend 65h on Stonemaier Games and 103h for your feline bosses, which leave a whole 0h left for Megan. You should at least ask your feline bosses a few hours a day to spend time with her…. or maybe it’s actually their great plan to keep you only for themselves!

Thanks for the laugh and have a great day!

  5. That furry pile on the blanket in the big picture near the bottom reminds me of those “Find the Hidden ________ in the Picture” puzzles, a favorite extra in my comic books as a kid. Thank you oodles for providing the opportunity for me to establish that my expertise in this world-rocking sport has not waned. I see a Biddy (or is it a Walter?) and the head of a moose (or is it a cow?)

  6. The perfect April Fool’s, as, let’s face it, anyone with a cat knows just how true all this is. Not difficult to see why the Egyptian’s worshipped the cat…we are here simply for their convenience.

  7. Well, I am surprised they let you do you company hobby for so long. They have been very tolerant! Good luck with your new focus – the only one that really matters. Meow!

  8. I think they are cross with you that you did not publish Calico but went for Wingspan instead.

  9. Oh man, it sounds like Walter and Biddy run a pretty tight ship. Best of luck, and I hope they don’t overwork you too much.

  10. Congrats on your new career path :) Happy to hear you taking such a risk and focusing on such a valuable role.

    1. Thanks! I’m excited to see the opportunities it brings, though Biddy and Walter have been abundantly clear that there’s no room for vertical movement within the organization.

      1. This could literally be the number 1 reply and it’ll still be underrated. No room for vertical movement. lol.
