Ever since Tapestry’s release in 2019, we have gathered/analyzed tens of thousands of data points and listened to Tapestry fans around the world–including in an extensive thread on BoardGameGeek–in an effort to ensure that every Tapestry civilization is as balanced, fun, and intuitive as it can possibly be, whether they’re in the hands of new or experienced Tapestry players.

The result is this pack of revised, adjusted, rebalanced civilization mats from the core game and first two expansions (31 civ mats, plus 2 slightly revised capital city mats). We’ve also included a comprehensive landmark guide and added complexity ratings to all civilizations.

These final revised civs are substantially different than any previous adjustments, as previous adjustments were only changes to setup. Most of the final adjustments impact the entire gameplay of the civilizations. You can see the final text for these civ mats here.

We’ve packaged this pack in recyclable cardboard, so if you order it by itself, the shipping label will go directly on the packaging. If we run out of this product, we’ll make more, so feel free to wait if you want to combine this with other products.

If we reprint Tapestry and either of the first two expansions later in 2024 or 2025, we will update the civ mats in those products.

FAQ

The revised Heralds say that when you can place a player token, you can place it on an “when played” or “continuous” card (yours or an opponent’s) and gain the benefits of that card. What does it mean to gain the benefits from an opponent’s continuous card or to gain the benefits of your own continuous card?

This gets more complicated than we anticipated, so please use this portion of the ability only on “when played” tapestry cards.

Why weren’t these balanced in the first place, like when Tapestry was released in 2019? Why didn’t you playtest it more?

First, for all but the most experienced Tapestry players, the civs are as balanced as they need to be. It’s only those who know the game really well who start to notice that a few civs are stronger than average and a few are weaker. That’s the case with Scythe too (which really only has 3 combinations out of dozens that end the game just a little too quickly).

Second, we playtest the heck out of all our games. Quantity and sincere, dedicated attempts to balance before release aren’t the issue; it’s a matter of data analysis. Our data analysis process has become significantly more robust and thorough over the years.

Third, there’s simply no comparing a viable number of pre-publication playtests (hundreds) versus the tens of thousands of plays that happen after a game’s release. We put a ton of effort into balancing our games during the development and playtest process–otherwise we wouldn’t release them. But we also try to have the humility to accept that when tens of thousands of people play our games (some many dozens of times), they might discover things we missed, and we want to be open to their feedback and to improving something we thought was final.

  1. Cant wait for the new set…Tapestry is in my top 3 favorite games of all time. Hope to get more content…but if this is all for it congrats on a awesome game

  2. I bought the Revised Civ Pack and was surprised that the Historians were not updated. The integrated Rulebook that came with Fantasies and Futures shows a significant “Civilization Adjustment” on the back cover for the Historians. Is this still valid or should I ignore this and use what is included on the original Historian card?

      1. Thank you so much, Jamey. I found it!!! Somehow it was added to the pile of replaced Civs. It was the only Civ that found itself in the wrong pile. By the way, I love the changes that have been made to this card. Really makes it much stronger, yet more balanced. I’m playing random Civs in solo mode but after every 2 games, one of the 2 Civs is eliminated (depending on final score) and the other goes into the next round of my Single Elimination Tournament. I’m starting my 9th pair of contestants for the overall crown. It’s been a blast so far — even if the luck factor as to which 2 Civs get paired together is relatively high. No problem for me —it’s just for fun and not for any real insight into their relative strengths.

  3. Hi ! Do the Civilisations from Fantasies & Futures Expansion need to be updated too or they won’t need any update ? Thanks in advance for your answer. Regards ;-)

    1. So far the data has not indicated that they need an update; we have no plans to release revised versions for them.

    1. All 5000. We had 2000 people who signed up for the “please make the revised civ pack and let me know when it launches” form, and we took the risk of making another 3000 just in case. And now we’ll make some more to have back in stock in late summer. :)

      1. Sounds like a great success! Congrats! I’ve been scouring the Internet to try to find someone selling/reselling it with no luck. Do you have any idea of any retail stores that might have it? Or online sellers? I don’t want to wait. :D

        1. I’m sorry, but I don’t have that information. This first print run was just for people who came to our webstore (it’s such a niche product that we figured it wouldn’t make sense for distribution/retail). If a retailer specifically reached out to us asking to serve a specific customer who asked them about the pack, we tried to help them out while it was in stock. But at this point with it out of stock, we just ask that you put a back-in-stock request on our webstore. I’m sorry I don’t have a better answer. When our fulfillment center does an inventory count, it is possible they might find a few dozen copies, and the first people we’ll tell are those who requested back-in stock requests, so there’s a glimmer of hope there.

    1. I’m sorry it sold out; it took around 35 days to do so. We’re making more, and it will be available in late summer.

    1. We’re working on a reprint, which typically takes 6 months. So late summer 2024. Please make sure to sign up for a back-in-stock notification on our webstore.

  4. Hi,
Some civs like the Architects say specifically “When starting the game with the Architects …”.
Other civs (like the Riverfolk and many others), have a sentence like “Start with …”.
My understanding was that the latter (Riverfolk) indicates something that you apply as soon as you receive this civ, while the former (Architects) is only applicable when you start the game with this civ. Is this assumption correct?
    – In case of the Riverfolk you would e.g. gain the 5VP per impassable plot if you receive the civ in the middle of the game?
    – In case of the Architects you would not place player tokens per opponent if you receive the civ in the middle of the game?

    1. Thanks Tristan! You’re correct that some civs “Start with” give you a benefit when you gain that civ, while others specify that the benefit happens only if you start the game with the civ.

    1. I wouldn’t say anyone needs it. But there is no overlap between this and any content in Fantasies & Futures. These final revised civs are substantially different than any previous adjustments, as previous adjustments were only changes to setup. Most of the final adjustments impact the entire gameplay of the civilizations.

  5. Jamey, My revised Civ cards arrived this week and everything looks great! I am very happy with the final product. I enjoyed following this revision process on BGG and am continually amazed by how well you communicate with and welcome feedback from the customers. Your games have certainly accomplished your mission to bring joy to tabletops. I did notice that the Alchemists Civ seems a bit different/more powerful than in the Google docs.

Did this decision have the intended purpose to boost the ability or simply make it more understandable? Do you think this adjustment could make Alchemists the new most powerful Civ?

    1. Thanks Reese! We did make some adjustments during the final stages of the process based on clarity and fun, though the core intention was always balance: We think all revised civs are closely balanced against each other.

  6. Is there a print and play version of this? It seems only fitting after buying a +$100 game and expansions that I can print off the corrected version.

    1. You can print the revised text from the Google Sheet linked on the above page, but we aren’t just giving away civs for free–the art wasn’t free to commission, they weren’t free to design, they weren’t free to redesign and adjust, and they weren’t free to print and package. Plus, this pack is entirely optional. The original civs work just fine.

      1. That’s whack to be honest.

-You state the revised text doesn’t 100% reflect the final revisions, so I won’t be getting the adjusted civs, that my playthroughs literally helped to adjust.

-Not free to design. Cool I already paid for the designs on my original purchases.

-The art wasn’t free to commission. Do the civs all have new art? If they do, cool I don’t need it, just the proper wording to print off please. If it’s the same art, then I already paid for it.

-Not free to redesign and correct your original errors. That’s understandable but it sounds like a your fault thing, not the consumers fault.

-Not free to print and package. That’s fine, I would print and package it myself, hence the print and play request.

I appreciate you coming in here and answering questions and all, but I still don’t understand the decision to not let us see the rewording of the civs without sending you 20 bucks after already having given you $200 for unfinished games.

        1. You can see the rewording of the civs. It’s in the revised text. You make a fair point that it isn’t 100% final; I will personally update the text in the Google Sheet to be updated so it reflects the final text (like everything else I mentioned, my time also isn’t free, but I won’t send you an invoice for that).

  7. Has anyone else had their civ pack show up with warped cards? The whole stack of civ cards has a slight bow in the middle so they won’t sit flat. I’ve tried gently bending them in the opposite direction and putting them under a stack of books for a few days with no luck.

I don’t mind buying them again if this is just a fluke, but I don’t want to spend the money if another copy will end up the same. Not a huge deal, but I didn’t have this issue with the civ cards that came in the base game.

    1. Mark: I think it might be to how we packaged the civ mats? We weren’t expecting that to happen, but we’ve heard it from a few people, so I don’t think buying another copy will solve it. However, you can bend them pretty aggressively the other way–they won’t break.

  8. I was playing a game of Tapestry with the revised Civ pack and my opponent gained “The Chosen” mid game. We couldn’t work out what is meant by hidden and public achievements.

My guess would be that the public achievements are the 3 printed on the board (i.e. topple 2 outposts, reach the end of a track, control the middle island) and the 6 hidden are the ones on the Civilization itself.

  9. The new Entertainers call for you to trigger their power on income turns 1-4 instead of 2-5 like the old ones. As far as I can tell that’s the only change? Is that correct?

  10. Is there any update on when this is shipping in the US? I ordered it on day 1 and it still hasn’t shipped. This is very disappointing.

    1. We’ve sent an update about this a week ago, and the status is the same. Weather in St. Louis has been really bad, impacting our fulfillment center in ways we could not have foreseen. They have told us they’re going to get everything shipped by the end of this week. I appreciate your order 3 weeks ago, and the fulfillment center is doing their best despite very bad, icy conditions. I have empathy for the workers there who are struggling to even get to the warehouse.

  11. About the desert and wetlands capital mats: are they supposed to replace the old ones in any kind of game? Should I recycle the old ones?

    1. The civs and capital cities in this pack do indeed replace the originals; you can remove/recycle them.

  12. Is there a typo on the new Entertainers civilization? It says on your income turns (1-4) get the effect but the FAQ says it is income turns 2-5. Which is correct?

    1. We have more on the way–please sign up for a back-in-stock notification and you’ll hear from us soon.

  13. Regarding the Alchemists: when selecting the Black conquer die, do you get both the resource and the bonus listed on the bottom of the mat? If so, what do you get for the ? Side as that usually indicates the reward on the tile that is being conquered. Since you’re not conquering. Territory what would you get? Thanks!

  14. Hi, I was hoping to buy this. I was just wondering why it is more expensive in the UK and if it’s an error or another reason? £16 is around $20 atm I think

    1. It’s the same price; the difference is that VAT is legally required to be in the listed price in Europe (sales tax is added at checkout in the US).

  15. Hello and thank you for your work.

I just wanted to ask if there will be a distribution center or shipping from any EU country ,as i live in Greece and I have ordered lots of stuff for Tapestry directly form your site, and it gets really costy to pay for delivery and customs from the UK distribution center.

Are there any chances that the civ pack will be available in any EU country besides UK?

    Thanks

    1. Pavlos: We ship from the UK throughout Europe DDP (delivery duties prepaid). Spiral Galaxy is our only fulfillment center in Europe.

  16. Is there a chance to extend the launch price of the revised tapestry civs to still be valid when Wyrmspan is also available for order? Would be nice to order both in one go and only to pay delivery once :-)

    1. It’s absolutely fine if you want to do that–there are enough copies of the pack available to wait until then, and you’ll still save money on shipping. At most, the difference will be +$4.

  17. I hope there will be a German version, and if it is settled that Feuerland won’t make one, the English version is still available… I have asked Feuerland about a translation and haven’t got an answer yet.

    1. Ok Feuerland says that want to make a translation but they don’t have all the necessary information so cannot say when it will happen…

      1. There is one civilization (Urban Planners) that requires content from other expansions (landmark cards and their associated landmarks).

  18. Great! Both for the adjustments and how you’re packing them. Just to know, the civs introduced in FF aren’t going to get revised? Like, this is the definitive set of civilizations or later we’ll get a new “promo” or whatever to fix those last ones?
Hope that won’t happen to finally have the whole Tapestry updated and as balanced as possible.

    1. We’re happy with the balance of the Fantasies & Futures civs–there’s no plans to change them.

      1. What is the difference between this update pack and what was updated already in the Fantasies and Futures Expansion??

        1. These are changes that impact ongoing gameplay, including some civs that are completely redesigned. Previous adjustments only impacted setup.

          1. Thx Jamie. So I assume we can ignore the adjustments at the back of the Fantasies and Futures rule book if we have the new Adjusted Civ pack?

  19. I see the complexity ratings are listen on the civilisation mats. Will there be any indication of the complexity ratings for the fantasies and futures civilisations, given that these aren’t being reprinted?

  20. Do you intend to also update the digital implementations, such as Board Game Arena? Or has that already happened?

    1. We’re open to putting our games on Board Game Arena around 3 years after they’re released. In the meantime, we’re hoping to work with Monster Couch (the Wingspan Digital developer).

  21. Hi Jamey, can you confirm that the revisions to the tapestry civs go further that what has already been adjusted and FAQ’ed in the various expansions in the last few years? Thanks!

    1. Yes, these are substantially different, as previous adjustments were only changes to setup. Most of the final adjustments impact the entire gameplay of the civilizations.

    1. While we can’t ship directly to Brazil, you can ship to a forwarding address in the US (see services like Shipito).

  22. Are there any differences in this Civ pack that aren’t already mentioned in the revised rules in the back of the expansion rulebooks or online?

    1. Yes, fairly significant differences. Those previous adjustments were made so you didn’t need to remember anything during the game (just setup differences). The final revisions are more substantial.

  23. Do we know if this will be sold through distributors also, or is this only available through your website? Thx!

    1. For the first print run, we just plan to sell through our webstore (though we offer local pickup now from Miniature Market in St. Louis).

  24. I see that arts and architecture is sold out. Are there plans to restock it? Also, in regard to the revised civ pack (i think i read it somewhere but i can’t find it again), what is the estimated fulfillment date for orders in the US

    1. Yes, we’re reprinting Arts & Architecture, and we should have it back on our webstore in 6 months. If you buy the revised civ pack today, it will ship in mid-January.

  25. Excited for this. Question on the Alchemists, since that’s the one I can read. If I keep the black dice with the question mark hex, I assume I pick a territory that I already own and gain the benefit on that tile. Is that the correct interpretation?

      1. Thanks for the reply! It’s more about the iconography at the bottom for the black dice reward. If I roll and keep the black dice and it’s a food, I get a food resource plus an explore action. If it’s a culture, I get a culture resource plus a conquer action, etc. So typically, the question mark on the black dice gets me the benefit on the territory tile that I just conquered. So if I roll question mark, do I just select a territory I already control and gain that benefit plus a resource of my choice?

Or am I interpreting it wrong? Where if I roll a food, I only get to explore, or only conquer if I rolled a culture? Just the one corresponding benefit instead of both.

  26. Very excited for these revised civs! The revised Alchemists is much more useful than the original!

  27. I only just became aware of this, so too late to ask I’m sure, but…

Is there any chance of an updated solo player mat for Arts & Architecture to use instead of having to put a little tile on the old one?

    1. Dan: I appreciate you asking about this, but we’ve already printed the revised civ pack, so no additions or changes can be made to it.

    1. We don’t do exclusives, though the first printing of the revised civ pack is designed and printed in quantities specifically for our webstore. If we sell out and hear that there’s enough demand from retailers to do a second printing, we can consider that later in 2024.

  28. I am so excited for this!! I have played hundreds of hours of Tapestry, with all 3 expansions. Civ balancing is a hot topic in my game group – this will bring peace to the table and will hopefully reduce the squabbling lol :) huge fan of this game, thanks for you continual dedication to improving this game – it is a masterpiece in my eyes!

  29. Civ release date on the progress chart shows Q4 2023, but the Revised Civ web page says Early 2024. Which is correct?

  30. Hi!
We love the base game and what the arts and architecture expansion added to the experience – fantastic job!! 🥳❤️ We don’t own the plans and ploys expansion but I guess the updated civs from that expansion can be added anyway? They are all independent of cards and other features from the plans and ploys expansion, right? Thank you ❤️

  31. I heard on your live stream this morning that you do not expect this revised civ pack to be available in 2023 as previously stated. Can you disclose why? We are eagerly looking forward to its release to revitalize those older civs.

    1. Well, it isn’t due to ship out of China until mid-October, and freight shipping during this season can take anywhere from 6-10 weeks. We release new products at the beginning of the month and only if the product has arrived at all 4 of our fulfillment centers.

      1. I see, so a logistical issue and not because the civs needed further refinement? Thanks for the revisions, my friends and I have over 100 Tapestry plays under our belt. It’s by far our favorite board game!

        1. The final files were sent to the printer 4 months ago; refinement ended at that moment. :) Thanks for playing!

  32. Glad to see this is happening and thank you for the effort you have put in to fix the imbalances. I would just ask that you please make this as affordable as possible. The cost of the game and expansions were already fairly high. And now we will be looking to pay even more.

    1. Absolutely. My calculation for the price of this product is simply that we don’t lose money on it (including when Champions buy it at a 20% discount).

  33. I see 31 rebalanced civs for base, plans and arts, but none for fantasies. Is this because fantasies does not need to be rebalanced, or are the fantasies civs included in this pack as well?

    1. Fantasies & Futures was just released, and we haven’t seen any indication that rebalancing is needed for its civs. They are not included in the pack; we currently consider those civs final as printed.

      1. Ah thanks for the clarification.

And btw, i just want to say that one of the best things that y’all do, is to incorporate feedback and update the games based on new data. A great example of this was also seen in viticulture. I think that most game designers neglect this (probably due to $),, but it is totally reasonable that no amount of play testing can provide the same information as 1,000,000’s of people playing over and over. Just want to say thanks for that.

        1. Thanks Nick! Viticulture was a good early lesson, and I appreciate the opportunity to make smaller adjustments (like in Tapestry) rather than make entirely new editions like with Viticulture. :)

    1. We only publish English-language products, but feel free to check with our partner in your language to see what they’re willing to share (or just to tell them you want it). 999 Games is our Dutch partner.

  34. Just gotta say I appreciate this so much – Playtesting can’t catch everything, and it is awesome to see the approach Stonemaier has with listening and providing a thoughtful update for their game and the people that want it.

  35. So glad to hear that you’re going to publish this pack. Will Feuerland in Germany sell them in German as well?
Thanks for Tapestry and all your efforts, Jamey!

  36. Can’t wait for this – I’m planning on buying it along with 3 at the same time. Any chance that will be on sale again around the same time this releases, as a promotion maybe? I kinda want to buy it now to save a few bucks, but paying shipping now and then again on the final civ pack would just eat the savings.

    1. Typically we offer the entire brand for sale when we have a new product for the brand, so I think it’s likely there will be a 10% discount on all Tapestry products when the revised pack is available later this year or early 2024.

    1. We’re making it cost-effective to best serve Tapestry fans. We announce prices for our products when they go live on our webstore, as they’re subject to change until then; until then, the only information about about the product is as provided on the above page.

  37. Will the revised civs be included in future printings of the base and expansion games? I don’t currently own Tapestry, and I’m trying to decide if it makes sense to wait until the revised civs come out if they will be included in the main game box. Thanks!

    1. Thanks for asking! We don’t plan to reprint the base game or the expansions, as we have plenty of inventory of them. If there is renewed interest in the game over time, maybe in a few years we might consider reprinting them, at which point we would probably update the civs. But the civs in the core game and expansions function perfectly fine–we wouldn’t have reprinted them the last few times if they weren’t fun and functional. :)

    1. Some civs just don’t work for solo mode due to their nature, so that will remain the case in the revised civs.

  38. Just wondering if there is a ballpark on when the revised pack will be released. I know you have much better data gathering now but I assume you’d still want to hear back from other players on the FF Civs as well just to make double sure no adjustments need to be made for them too, right?

Like would it be about a year from now? 6 months? What are y’all thinkin?

    Thanks! :)

    1. We’re pretty confident about the FF civs, but we’ll give them a little time to get to the table in case we missed anything. I’m hoping to go to print later in April, which would be a late 2023/early 2024 release.

  39. Is Tapestry going to be considered a completed game after the revised civs are printed? I’m also curious how heavily the civs are going to be edited, whether it’s just the point and resource adjustments or whether they’ll be changing more significantly.

    1. You can see the in-progress adjustments here: https://bit.ly/3URyOTn In most cases, the changes are much more involved than a resource or a few points.

With the complete rulebook being printed in Fantasies & Futures and the complete insert being officially authorized, Tapestry is indeed considered complete.

      1. To confirm, does that mean the adjustments and balances mentioned in the new complete rulebook will be handled by these reprints/adjustment civ cards? And we’ll need to make sure when playing with these new cards we don’t adjust on top of them based on what the book says?

        1. Thanks for your question. The complete rulebook is included in Fantasies & Futures–it’s already printed, so it won’t be changed. When playing with the Tapestry revised civ pack, you will ignore all previous adjustments, as all adjustments are built into these final revised civs.

    1. I think there is a very good chance the revised pack will include all civs from the core game and the first 2 expansions.

      1. “a very good chance” could mean not all 16 Civs Mats will be reprint to replace those from the first printing core game with backside picture printed upside down — whichever they are revised, adjusted, rebalanced or not?

        1. While the back side of the mats isn’t a reason for us to reprint the mats, currently all 16 original civs at least have a small gameplay-related reason to be reprinted, so the plan is to include all 16 revised, original civs in the adjustment pack.

      1. Pretty excited about this as I love tapestry.

One question do you have any plans to do a rebalance or change to any of the tapestry cards?

        1. Thanks! We have a few notes about those cards in the full rulebook in Fantasies & Futures, but we’re not changing the tapestry cards themselves.
